I stayed at one of their apartments a couple years ago. We showed up and the apartment we rented was filthy. We talked to one of the cleaners who worked on our place because he is one of our friends and he admitted that they don’t do anything. We took our smoke alarms out because if you cooked anything, they would go off. Maintenance shows up one day asking where the alarms are. We showed him where we kept them and explained that they didn’t work properly, yet he charged us for it. They also took the 2nd floor sink drain plug for no reason and charged us for it. We asked for repairs on our dryer vent, they came in and DUCT TAPED it. One time i paid my rent in cash, the guy at the counter was so dumb he couldn’t count my cash correctly and overcharged me $40. I called and called and it took days to get my money back. This business will refuse to answer your phone calls, but the second you leave a bad review, they will immediately reply. Isn’t that convenient? Never in my life have I worked with a lazier, more incompetent business. You’re better off just sleeping in a dumpster than renting from this god awful place
They are the company “apartments downtown” but they’ve changed their name. However they’ve not changed their name on the website. Their phone also still answers to Apartments downtown. Theyre still Apartments Downtown. Also known as Lucus LTD.Do not rent from them. I had consistently bad experiences with them and they kept my damage deposit because of this wording in the contract “all water damage regardless of the source is the responsibility of the tenant “ and “all water damage originating in your apartment is the responsibility of there tenant”Basically if an upstairs apartment leaked into a downstairs apartment, both apartments paid full cost.It rained indoors almost every day.Do not rent from Apartments Downtown. Even if they’ve changed their name.Heres my original review from back when they were apartments DowntownTheir lease had some very questionable looking terms in it, the worst and most memorable being how they handle water damage. Any water damage in your apartment you must pay for in full, regardless of source. Any water damage whos origin was your apartment you must also pay for. When water washed from a higher apartment into a lower one, both residents paid in full.Needless to say, it rained indoors regularly in my apartment, doing so four times in one particularly bad month. This was because the upstairs neighbors toilet was broken. It also happened whenever they spilled water on the floor, or whenever they stepped out of their shower while wet.Needless to say I got barely any damage deposit back. Other highlights include someone urinating against my wall and it never being fixed, my porch lamp being punched out by drunks. My window getting shattered and replaced with a wood board on the middle of winter, it took more than a month to get a replacement.I also lived with a lot of wildlife. An apocalypse of flies got in somehow while I was asleep with the AC on and the windows and doors closed. A snake got in every night somehow, and slithered out the front door when I opened it every morning. A giant spider lived in my closet. The free internet included in my rent was absolutely terrible. The service was provided by some fly by night wifi company called something monkey. Its not that it was slow, the speed was fine when it was working. But it was down more often than not. I complained about it every year, and every year they promised to change providers. Took three years for them to switch to Comcast. Once they switched out worked fine. Comcasts legendarily bad customer service was miles above the monkey people. The price climbed nearly every year. By the time I moved out I was paying more than 900 dollars a month, and that was not including parking. Parking is a scam, the attached lot is almost impossible to get into or out of in snow. Very unpleasant.Still, they fixed my broken porch light promptly, the maintenance man would show up immediately when I reported a ceiling rain, and when my AC unit randomly died, twice, I got a new one within a day.Its really close to a lot of important things. You can basically bike everywhere in Iowa city from here. There is great food nearby and its only three blocks from the library. (My Apartment was 509 south Lynn st.)I also liked the independence of my first place.Edit: I barely got more than $10 back of my damage deposit, and never got an itemized damages bill back, which I had requested. I suspect they charged me for the water damage caused by it raining indoors regularly. My upstairs neighbor was a perpetual indoor rain machine.
