Troubling Event!On the morning of my mothers 93rd birthday, 12/28/20, her furnace stop working. I called the company that had installed it, Penning, nine years earlier. As it was a Sunday, I knew there would be an extra fee($179.00).I agreed and scheduled the next available time slot.The tech arrived around 3pm. After a brief inspection, a new starting fan was needed. Then the sales pitch for the Platinum Plan. After choosing the cheapest Plan, the tech could not the find part in his van. Also, he would not go to his shop for it. This left me dumbfounded.He instead suggested I call his office on Monday morning first thing at 9am when they open to try and reschedule for the next available appointment. Make sure you call promptly at 9am for best chance at getting an appointment. What!?.. Wait...what?I was not happy at all.The next morning, when I talked to owner, he stood by his $179.00 charge. By the end of conversation, I was told to take my business elsewhere. I did!I called Vredevoogd. They arrived early the same day, had the part on their van, and fixed the problem. That tech said his companys shop has parts for equipment they install. He also checked the rest of the furnace for any other possible issues.Vredevoogd is the BEST!πŸ˜ƒPenning is.......not😞

Levi provided fantastic customer service. Was professional, courteous and knowledgeable. Arrived on time and had us back with water in no time. It was a weekend evening and he couldn’t do a new install that night (didn’t want to disturb the neighbors drilling an exhaust port through the side of the house) but was able to get back here first thing Monday morning. Had the job done by early afternoon. He was even able to tackle an extra mainline service job all in one appointment. Couldn’t ask for better service! Thanks Levi!

My A/C unit went out at the worst possible time, Pennings really came through for me. They were able to visit same day, quickly evaluate and repair on the spot. Darrel was the technician and was very knowledgeable and friendly. You can easily tell he loves his work and helping people. He gave me updates as he was working on it and also cleaned the unit and shared with me some details I wouldnt have noticed. I was not pressured with needless upsells and the value was appropriate, never felt I needed to bid out. I feel like I can trust this company with my future A/C and plumbing needs. Im extremely happy.

Our water heater burst on a Saturday afternoon so we had to shut off water to the house. We were very happy that a service tech was going to be able to come over same day. Levi was very professional, friendly, responsive. He presented us with pricing options and explained them in detail. We selected the gold package and we are very happy with our new system. Replaced the pressure sensing system on my furnace.Offered me 4 price plans with the platinum being recommended if I could afford it: $1200 plus paid in advance. Band aid being the cheapest plan.The tech took 44 minutes to install the new parts that he had brought into the house in a small plastic bag.This raised the question of what I had paid for aside from the repair, the follow up they would do in a year and two years replacement guarantee which was included in the platinum plan.Asked Penning multiple times to send me the labor and parts cost which they have refused to do.I have made a complain to the Better Business Bureau ( case # 37097992 )regarding this lack of transparency.After much delay they responding to the BBB complaint by again refusing to itemize what I purchased and then lying about talking with me directly, inferring that I was trying to get the platinum plan at the band aid price.The issue is having enough information to make an informed decision on what plan to purchase.I would not have purchased the platinum plan if I had known that most of the cost was for insurance rather then quality of repair.There unwillingness to provide me the specifics of what I purchased speaks to their lack of transparency and the real possibility that they are profiting from a deceptive practice.

I had a broken pipe behind the wall of a shower and because there werent any shut-off valves in front of the shower, I had to shut off the water to the entire house. Id never used Penning before, but they came up in a Google search as highly rated, so gave them a call. Frank came out and immediately installed shut-off valves so that we could get the water back on, and then he gave me an estimate for the full job to be done at a later time when it could fit his schedule. I had a couple days to review the estimate, and since it looked to be a fairly quick job, I felt it was too high, so I called Frank to discussed it and he and I came to a new estimate, which he got approved from management. He came out a few days later and finished the job perfectly and quickly. Frank is the best and if the rest of the plumbing professionals are like him, I can definitely recommend them, but dont be afraid to talk through the estimate if you think its too high. Theyre willing to work with you to make it right.

I cannot believe how amazing Brad is at his job! Hes kind and personable, explains everything in a way thats easy for someone who isnt familiar with plumbing to understand, and he got the work done SO quickly.He came to my house to check out a toilet that was clogging constantly. He diagnosed it and explained that they have a catalogue of toilets and he could install it the same day! He diagnosed the problem, talked me through my options, went to get the toilet, and installed it all within about two hours or so!If you can request Brad for your service, I highly recommend you do that! He even installed our bidet attachment! :)GREAT service!

They replaced the main sewer line under our house... yes jackhammered up a trench in the basement floor, tore out the rusted cast iron pipe (old house) and replaced it with PVC. This was 6 years ago.Recently the line backed up through the floor drain. We had the line cleared and then viewed with a camera which showed a sag in the new PVC line in the section they replaced. How could this be I asked... shouldn’t an underground PVC sewer line with no moving parts last for decades?Over the next month they failed to respond to phone messages, failed to reply to an e-mail inquiry, and finally after I sent a lengthy e-mail laying out the series of events and asked for answers, sent a brief reply (with an attitude, if it’s possible for e-mails to have an attitude) stating they warranty their work for 1 year. Since this is beyond 1 year I am welcome to engage their services again to replace their replacement.Lousy work, even lousier customer service, and oh by the way... they’re among the higher priced plumbers in town. Save yourself the headache of dealing with these people... go somewhere else.

This company was out before for a repair estimate, shame on me for forgetting about their 4 tier estimate gouging system.4 foot piece of copper pipe, 2 shut offs......guess how much? $200? $300? How about $900 plus for an exposed supply line to a water heater. I could get basic for $400 plus.Rang me up for $59 dollars for the pleasure.......I am not sure if i am more annoyed I forgot how i knew them or the overprice given. Felt like i was buying a car in 80s getting the rustproofing upcharge. System would not allow for zero stars.....

*Service Professors were amazingly professional, timely and great on communication. Don’t waste your money here. We had spent thousands of dollars with Penning. In hindsight, we realized they had to return for every large job to fix something. Specifically, when we had our furnace replaced, they had forgotten to tighten the gas line and almost killed our family. Still we were willing to see humans make mistakes and move forward. So when we called to replace our AC unit (a $6300 job) we figured we’d at least get professional service. Not only did they stand up for appointments, when we called to find out what was going on and when we could expect to get a service person out to bid the job, we were told we weren’t a priority and despite scheduling time to come to the house TWO WEEKS in a row, the scheduled could TRY to get someone out. She made me feel like I was a burden and they don’t value their customers time.

Found we had a leak in our pump from the furnace and humidifier. I called and was told it could be looked at after a tech completes the job they were on ahead of us. I got a call about an hour later from the tech. He came right over. We had Penning replace our A/C condenser on May 28, 2010. Unfortunately, on May 25, 2020 the fan stopped rotating. Since it was Memorial Day, we waited and called Penning on Tues (May 26) morning. My husband was told a technician would be out on Wed (May 27), Thurs (May 28) at the latest. It was urgent that we had this taken care of ASAP since the 10 year parts warranty was going to expire on May 28, 2020. I called Wed morning to see if they had an estimated time they would be here on Wed or Thurs and was told there was no way anyone would come and look at it on Wed or Thurs and that in fact they were booking 2 weeks out. They didnt even offer an after hours service call. I called around to some other heating and cooling companies and found more than 1 that was willing to come out within a matter of hours. Needless to say I went with one of those companies and will continue to use that company for any needs going forward. You would think a company such as Penning would value previous customers, I guess not...….

Had a tech come out to look at our gas fireplace. He said he wasn’t the one who typically works on fireplaces but he was in contact with the guy that does. Long story short, he guessed it was the thermopile, and it didn’t fix it. Had a guy out from another company, he said the thermopile was not working and replaced it, after replacing it the fireplace lit right up. I mean it took him 5 minutes. So I called penning and said that the thermopile they put in was faulty. They refuse to give me a refund even on the part. I get that I have to pay the service fee and all that but if you installed a faulty product you should at the very least reimburse me for it. Just unprofessional all around.

Well, I got completely taken. Charged nearly, if not double to going rate to replace a circuit board in our furnace- $1100. I unfortunately did not know better until after I had authorized the work. Adam was always on time, took care to leave our house as tidy as he found it, and fixed our leak quickly. We needed to get a new kitchen faucet, as well as pipes, and he listened to my concerns that our portable dishwasher needed to be able to connect to the new faucet. He took the connection and tried it on the various faucets before he selected the one he installed. No more leak, better faucet, great connection with our dishwasher. What a relief!

Our job should have been quick and easy. However, it required the city to come turn our water off. Right from the get go, Brad was very friendly and pleasant. When the city worker arrived, he looked around for a couple of minutes, then said he wouldn’t be able to get the water shut off, and they would have to schedule for a different day. We were leaving the next day for vacation, and I was very worried we would come home to a flooded basement, but I was going to take the city worker at his word. Thank goodness Brad was there! He advised me to call the city and advise them of the situation. I’m so glad I did! The woman I spoke with at the city advised me that our situation was considered an emergency, and she would dispatch an after hours crew, as it was getting close to 5pm. Long story short, Brad spent almost 4 hours at our house, mostly sitting in his van in the 80 degree heat, waiting for the city crew. He advocated for me with the city workers, as I did not understand exactly what was going on. Once the water was turned off, Brad was finished with our repair in 15 minutes. He went above and beyond in every possible way. It was some of the best, friendliest service we’ve ever received. I am so glad we went with Penning for our repair, and I am especially glad we got Brad as our tech! I would absolutely, 100% recommend this company.

I was having an issue with my AC unit not producing cold air, they told me I need a full AC unit renovation, which involved recharging the coolant, along with replacing a few parts and some cleaning of the condenser unit. It cost over $1000 but I was told my unit would be good for the next 5-10 years, and the service included a free checkup next year.I waited a month and the AC didnt see to improve, since the services were rendered, I one afternoon I noticed a high pitch whining sound from my outside unit and noticed the coolant line was frozen over, there was also a ring of ice at the point the line enters the furnace. I read online that I should turn off my AC and run the fan for the next 24-48 hours to melt the ice, and to also schedule a follow up vist with an HVAC specialist. It was noted that the issues could have been caused by user error, running the unit at a low temperature for too long, along with a few other issues that likely should have been resolved during the complete system renovation.Currently I am waiting for follow up service, but the office workers I talked too on the phone have shifted from telling me to expect someone on Thursday or Friday, to me calling Friday at noon to be told I may not even see a technician today. I am continuing to wait for follow up services, in the hope that I will get some sort of discount rate due to the potential lapses during the last visit, if that is not the case I will work with a different company. Since the initial service didnt seem to resolve my AC issue and seemed to be a $1000 waste of money, I would not currently recommend the service, at least not HVAC related. Granted experiences likely differ depending on the technician you work with.

They fixed gas lines that service professor refused to fixed. I have 4 stars instead of 5 because they doubled the price when another person was called on the job to feed tube through my flooring. That seemed excessive but I needed the job done after dealing with leaks for so long. It was about $1600 to fix a leaky line in my crawl space but it’s done and done right now.

Penning did a good job of reaching out to us and arranging an estimate for replacing our hot water heater. Their tech Adam was professional and provided a detailed estimate with a variety of options. We, however, did not go wit’s them nor can we recommend the company to others based on their lowest priced option being over $500 dollars higher than what we ended up paying with another licensed company. In addition, despite explaining exactly what we wanted and sending pictures to them in advance of the space and old water heater, they were not able to provide a ball park estimate on the phone. We ended up having to pay $60 for Adam to show up and give us the estimate that the other company provided at no charge.

Then we had to keep calling them to find out if/when they were going to come back out to repair/ replace. This happened several times as they had to keep ordering stuff. I was told that I needed another part so it was ordered and was told that they would let me know the amount after they received the invoice. When they were already told by the manufacturer that it was free. Then I was charged another $200 plus dollars to put in this free part.. Prices are a little extreme.

We needed to have new drain tile installed in our basement. Prior to this, we needed a bathtub and toilet removed from a bathroom and our hot water heater disconnected and moved away from the wall. I called Penning and they assigned Brad to the project. He arrived at the scheduled time and performed the work as quoted.After the drain tile was installed, Brad returned to reconnect the hot water heater. Because the bathtub had broken when removing it, due to the installation methods of another plumbing company, Brad had recommended what style of tub and walls to purchase and where. This he installed and it looks great.Penning and Brad provided excellent service. They communicated each step of the way. They recommended other needed repairs, not to run the cost higher, but because a main valve needed replaced and the old tub faucet and cartridge were bad. Our technician, Brad was very pleasant and helpful. However that is the only positive I can say. We have been customers of Penning for several years and are getting tired of the price gouging we have experienced. We simply needed a garbage disposal replaced and first of all they could give me no pricing over the phone and told me β€œwe can pay a lot or a little for a new disposal.” They willNot even tell you the pricing options over the phone because they know we would never have them come out if they gave us the prices they showed us today. The β€œband-aid” option which was to simply replace the same model we had, which retails at Home Depot for $130, was $433 with no guarantee. The job took about 30 minutes from start to finish. The next option was over $633 with a few extras such a β€œleak test” and 6 month warranty. There platinum options was over $1000 for a garbage disposal!!!! I feel sick that I paid what I did for a job that probably should be $250 at most with parts and labor. I will not be calling Penning in the future for any work because they definitely have mastered the art of price gouging customers. I understand that companies need to make money but whatever happened to fair and honest pricing based on true costs of part and labor? When I called the office for an explanation I was simply told β€œsorry” I was also asked what I was expecting to pay. When I said the same exact disposal retailed for $134 at Home Depot all I got was β€œoh, ok”. Would love an explanation how they come to their pricing. Last week we had problems with our toilet. We called Penning Plumbing and they were out to our home within two hours. Our technician was Frank A. who had helped us out one other time. I dontknow who I like more, Frank or Penning. Heres why I like Penning Plumbing, they try and get your problem addressed on the same day. They stand behind their work, and their prices are reasonable, and if you are a repeat customer you get a discount card which is much appreciated! Now onto Frank our technician. This man respected our home. He addressed the problem and fixed it. The man is meticulous, and he gave us options on what to purchase. Through his suggestions, the option we chose suited our needs and we are very happy. Pennings man Daryl did a good job, kept me informed and took care to clean up when finished. I would recommend to get a quote from them if you have any boiler work that needs to be done. We called them to come out and a leak with our bathroom sink. When plumber got here he told us that our bathroom was cracked and needed to be replaced. So Monday morning he came back to replace the bathroom sink for $ 750 to us. On Thursday morning I noticed that the bathroom sink was leaking still called Penning again and told that the bathroom sink was still leaking. The plumber showed up Thursday afternoon and said that that the connections wont tightened enough. Well guess what we still have problem with our bathroom sink leaking so we basically spent $750 dollars for no reason because we still have the same problem that we started before we spent $750 on a bathroom sink that didnt to be replaced. We had used Penning Plumbing for plumbing needs for many but we never ever use them again for our plumbing needs. Since John Penning the original company owner passed away the quality of your repair services have gone down.

We used Penning Plumbing to replace our leaky hot water heater. We called them, because Godwin Plumbing couldn’t come for a week. I waited to do my review until after my wood floor was fixed, that the tech damaged taking out the old water heater. And they better pay him!! Do not use them, their prices are outrageous, $800 more than their competitors and they make you pay for the house call on top of the bill. We were desperate, and now we know why they could do the job right away. If you scroll down in the reviews, you will see the same story. I wish I would have done my homework!

Woke up the morning with my furnace fan howling. I called Penning and the person who answered, Lavon, was terrific. She answered my questions and kept me informed about when my technician could get here so I didnt have to wonder. Jeff S was the Service Pro, and did a great job! He was courteous and also answered my questions. He presented me with all of my options but didnt oversell. He fixed it quickly, and I feel very comfortable with the work that he did, and will definitely call Penning when it is time (this year) to buy a new furnace. Great job!

Cant give an estimate over the phone - but happily charge $60 for a service call.Called several plumbing service providers to gather estimates on a water heater install. Without exception - every provider aside from Penning gathered info like tank size, capacity, etc. then provided an estimate. Not a quote... just an estimate. Penning didnt even ask for any information - just tried to push to get a $60 service call (to provide an estimate... not to provide any service).Rip-off. Call around.

Had a representative come out to connect my gas range. Quoted me $225 to connect it with the parts i supplied...absolutely ridiculous. Literally a 10 minute job that i just wanted to make sure was done correctly. Paid the $60 trip fee and declined service. Will never use or recommend Penning.

Hot water heater installation today.Excellent service, on time, available on short notice for a leaking hot water heater. Professional, thorough, very clean.Expensive. New 50 gal heater, flood pan, two ball valves, reconnected recirculating pump.$1399.99 including tax.Last time I had that heater replaced (2009) it was a little less than $700.I suspect that it was a bit high even allowing for inflation, but I liked the service, and paying a premium was worth it to have the problem solved expertly within a couple hours of my call.Would be 5 stars if not for the price.

I had a Penning Plumber visit my home today to give me an estimate on a kitchen sink repair and new faucet unit provided by me for installation. His quote was comparable to purchasing a very good quality set of tires all around your vehicle including mounting! The plumber that ended up doing the job charged half the amount wanted by Penning. I got a great learning session costing me a $59.00 travel charge. I was always instructed by my parents to say nothing if you havent got something good to say, so I will leave you with this little bit of advise..............call another plumbing company instead.

I had a new water heater installed that was converted to a power exhaust instead of the natural draft out of the chimney. The work that was performed was excellent and havent had any issues. They were courteous and brought in carpet liners to not track in the mud along with shoe covers. I docked one star because I thought the price was a little high, but thats the price you pay for not doing it yourself. I would recommend Penning to anyone who needs work done, and as long as they were not looking for the cheapest option.

Didnt guide me on packages properly.Very disappointing....Another time they quoted me $350 for simple Sink blockage. I decided not to pursue with the work and paid $65 visiting fee. I have to say, with all the 5 star ratings I am curious as to how many patrons actually know industry standard pricing for master plumbers? This company charges 2.5 to 3 TIMES the normal industry standard rates. They came out for an estimate and that cost $59. Must be the only way they stay in business because to cut a brass piece off and install 2 shut off valves ...Estimate at $800 dollars. They stated 4 hours for work which I questioned as to the simplicity of the work. If you average the work out it came to about $225-250 dollars an hour. Industry is $80 an hour and $120 for emergency on weekends and after hours. I of course turned them down and explained I wouldnt recommend! Ridiculous prices. Dont care what warranty they provide as their work should be sufficient enough because if it fails due to their workmanship they are legally responsible anyway (Contract law 101). Additionally dont care of the high priced vans they drive and the newest technology they use...its plumbing.

I was charged (actually double charged) for a diagnostic that was never completed. I came home to soaked carpet because they didnt tighten the one valve they did check. Had to fix it myself. They tried to sell me a new water heater that I didnt need. After 5+ requests reaching out, the owner could not be bothered to even respond. I called Godwin and they corrected the issue quickly and professionally. Buyer beware. This is not a company you want to deal with!

The quality of work work was good. The issue I have is the cost. I was charged $372 to replace a $20 part that took the plumber an hour and 45 minutes to perform. The service tech pleasant and was knowledgeable but charging people about $175/hour is ridiculous. I didnt know the cost until my toilet was taken apart, had I know the cost before hand I would have never had him start. But since it was dismantled I was forced to have him finish the work. They did waive the additional $60 diagnostic fee though. I wont use them ever again and from now on I will get a quote with a reasonable hourly rate before they begin the work.
