Clean and organized with friendly staff. All pets have their shots and they go out of their way to help special needs pets find the right home.I really like how diligent they are with referrals. It would be easy to just give pets away to the first person who asks, but they work really hard to make sure its the right home and minimize the risk of a person getting in over their head then trying to return the pet. This is my beautiful Dog Ella, who we adopted almost 7 years ago.

I checked out Petfinders and found my next medical companion dog I could just tell by her eyes her name was Ella I was in love I filled out the application and everything. Something happened where I live with a tenant wish I was moving out anyway but it was not right to bring her in and not to give her the happiness and love I know I could give her at this time. It absolutely killed me to let that application go if anybody checks out Cape and look for Ella take care of her

I adopted my best friend from here 3 years ago, a Catahoula from Houston. It was pre-covid so i dont know how or if anything has changed but at the time this was extremely easy and stress free. Dog is still in excellent health and I was surprised he already knew so many commands! Thank you cape ann animal aid, you changed my life and his.

I adopted my dog from here early on in the pandemic and they did a wonderful job. I found him online, put in an application and he was in my home the same week. We met him on zoom before processing the adoption, which was a nice way to see his personality. When we got him, it was clear that he had been given love, training and was well cared for over there. Plus, they provided such a wonderful care package with him including food, toys, and a crate.

Outstanding service. I filled out numerous applications at other shelters who never responded to my applications. Cape Ann Animal Aid on the other hand responded to my requests to adopt a cat on two separate occasions very promptly. They introduced me to the cats via Zoom interviews immediately and I was able to pick up the cats the SAME day. I cannot recommend them highly enough!!!

We adopted our sweet Millie from Cape Ann Animal Aid 4 years ago and could n’t be happier with the process. We walked in, saw her and fell in love right away. We spent half an hour out in the meeting yard with our other pups to see how they got along, which went great, and before we knew it, we were headed home with my little furry sole mate! The best thing CAAA offers is a chance to meet the dogs before you adopt. Just don’t wait too long because they don’t last long!

Didnt find the pup for us here but the process for visiting potential dog matches is very straightforward and pleasant. The volunteers are great and honest. We gave a heads up call about bringing our dog to meet a specific dog and just had to bring proof of vaccinations. We got in at open and were promptly lead to meet the dog we were interested in. We got to go on a walk, some unleashed play, and a small trip to the beach to see his personality in different situations. Unfortunately we didnt think he would be a good fit for us but I definitely recommend coming here if youre looking for a dog and want to meet them in person.

Unfortunately, theres nothing available to rate below 1 star. Id driven my sister there because she wanted to adopt a cat named Marilyn. The drive took 3 hours. Shed been in contact with them since 10 a.m. that morning and was making arrangements with them to adopt the cat. They knew we were traveling a distance to get there as she was calling them to let them know we were encountering heavy traffic. We got there at 4:55 p.m. What they neglected to tell her was they stop taking applications at 4:30 p.m. and the required paperwork she needed to bring. At that time, they informed her to come back the next day to stand in line at the door...that maybe the cat would be available when it was her turn. She was prepared to leave a deposit but was refused. My sister has been a pet owner for 35+ years. Its awful she was treated this way by the rude and unprofessional staff.

Im a severely disabled resident who attempted to surrender my 13 year old cat to Cape Ann Animal Aid as I can no longer take care of him. And in addition he howls a lot and the neighbors have been complaining. The animal aid said they wouldnt take him as he didnt fit their narrative and that they felt they couldnt find him a home. This is a hypocrisy as this outfit constantly brings in dogs from around the world to Gloucester (from Istanbul, Puerto Rico and other places) and charge astronomical fees for adoption. This place charges $450 to adopt a puppy under one year old, and $375 for a dog over one year old. In comparison, in Los Angeles you can adopt a dog for $125 which includes all the same services (spay-neuter, microchip, shots, etc). This so called shelter is more concerned with money then helping with the animals and residents here in Gloucester. An animal shelter is just that. A place for animals to temporarily go (and hopefully be adopted) that have been surrendered, strayed, or rescued. My cat wasnt applying for a job, he needed a place to go. This shelter is more concerned with providing vanity dogs for people with money. My cat needs a home asap and they refused him and in turn me, a disabled person. The city needs to provide some oversight into this organization as they do a disservice to the community.

I recommend this shelter to anyone looking to get a pet. The shelter its self is extremely clean and well organized and who you see (for available pets) is who is there. The staff is excellent, they let you take your time to make sure the pet you are meeting is the one for you. We got our dog there and she is the most wonderful dog I could imagine joining our family. It is a first come first serve place and if you see a pet on the website, its there, but the minute someone starts the adoption process the pet is removed, so if you see someone you like you need to get there ASAP. Its a really fantastic shelter. They dont make you jump through hoops to adopt. There arent any home visits, they just require that your entire household comes to ensure the pet will get along with everyone and that you bring any dogs you already have to ensure they get along too.

I ♡♡♡♡ THIS PLACE!! I volunteered here in Gloucester for a little while and Im actually hoping to get the opportunity to go back there. Everyone was very nice and helpful, but the dogs were of course the best part of the time I spent there. I always left there later because I was out walking or playing with one of the dogs, who I must mention are the sweetest, cutest animals!Ive never felt so much love than from them at the end of my shift. No matter how I would be feeling before I walked through the doors it was def alll great by the end. These animals just wanted attention and to be loved. They had a bad life starting out, and I really do believe that they alll deserve the best from then on!*only talked about the dogs because thats what I had signed up for in the beginning to work with and learn more about. But the cats and kittens were just as cute an sweet as ever, I had to sneak into that side when i got a second :) if anyone is looking for an animal this is the best shelter or at least one of the best shelters Ive ever seen and also heard about.I cant tell you how much I recommend going down there, even if you just want to play with a dog or cat.... they love the attention! :) ♡♡

First of all, let me say it was clear the staff was very clear about wanting to provide quality care to their animal clients. Unfortunately, the system broke down in our case. We believe the dog we adopted, named Jake and changed to Moesy, was not properly evaluated. Possibly an honest mistake but still a potentially dangerous one. The dog seemed very mellow and submissive. We got him home and for the first few days he was a sweetheart. Then without warning he changed. He became more aggressive finally culminating with an attack on me. The result was two bites; one on the hand which did not break the skin and a second bite on the upper arm that bled pretty strong though was not really serious. End result was having to return Moesy. He was not my first dog. He would have been my eighth so I am pretty familiar with raising a dog. We paid $375.00 for Jake/Moesy. I feel the shelter should have offered at least a partial rebate on the dog since what happened was the result of a poor decision to place the dog for adoption without a multi day evaluation. Regardless we hope better care will be taken next time around.Jim Higgins
