So, I’m a gym rat…but half a dozen functional training 1on1’s with Mike totally refocused me. One session of bodyweight squats highlighted the weakness and instability of my hips…quads be damned. He is also enthusiastic, charismatic and a joy to train with.
Mike is a passionate about doing kettlebell workouts correctly (correct form, not hurting your back). Its a great community of people and they motivate you to a higher level of fitness. After spending years of running and lifting weights, learning how to kettlebells correctly has transformed my body and made my exercise routine more efficient. Im much stronger and leaner!
Great community of people working out together. Mike and John are very knowledgeable and the best! I’ve gotten in great shape and daily pain I used to have is now gone. People of all backgrounds and ages come together to improve themselves as a group!
The trainers at CrossFit Koncepts are top notch. The focus is on longevity and remaining injury free. Great community of highly skilled box-mates where everyone looks out for each other. Many long term members and some families train here.It is impossible to convey how knowledgeable Mike Krivka is about how to train for strength, mobility, and resilience.
Awesome gym and instructors. If you ever wanted to get stronger and increase your mobility then this is the place to go. Best place to learn how to use Kettlebells to incorporate into your work out programming
Crossfit Koncepts offers outstanding training that focuses on proper technique and workouts that can challenge at any level. The owner, Mike Krivka, will challenge your fitness level, whether a beginner or longtime fitness buff. Workouts are carefully planned and thought out, providing a variety of movements and strength building techniques, and accommodating different levels of fitness. Modifications are always provided when needed, taking into consideration the particular needs of the athlete. Mike is the best trainer out there by far, knowledgeable about fitness, proper form, always emphasizing how to challenge yourself while avoiding injury, teaching how to train smart, providing an avenue to keep yourself fit for life. To top that off, he is personable and fun, and cares deeply about the health and welfare of his athletes. You cannot go wrong here - this gym is a win-win!
Great gym, great people, amazing leader!!!! Where are the other 5 stars to give this a 10???When I moved to Maryland I visited several gyms to find one that fit my needs both for working out and for my personality. Some were ok but none fit What I was looking for which was to learn correct movement....until I found CrossFit and Mike Krivka. I had lived in Colorado, Iowa and Maryland at that point and no where did I find an instructor who took the time to work with me one on one to ensure I knew the correct way to use kettlebells and barbells the way Mike did. Even though I moved away after a year the friendships I had built and the trust I have in Mike and others he has taught to help run this facility have kept me tied to them from afar. I can call or text Mike and he will watch my technique on video if I feel I have lost touch with my form without judgment. He is always willing to post great videos to help me and many others who can’t be there in person. I have made friends and and an instructor for life!!!!
This gym is AWESOME!! I started coming here about 7 years ago. I am a hairstylist in the area so I’m on my feet a lot. When I started at Crossfit Koncepts I couldn’t bend over to pick up a comb off the floor. Now I am doing very deep squats. I have had personal training under both the owner (Mike Krivka) and a trainer (John Kalil) at the gym. You will have a very difficult time finding anyone better than them. In my opinion these two guys have saved my life!!WARNING: They are perfectionist!! They are more concerned about your technique than how fast you are. I love kettlebells……I have never felt better!!!
Mike is fun but knowledgeable about kettlebells and more. Proper form and consistency is key!
Not your typical Crossfit gym. Here you will find people who want to make sure you do it correctly, dont get hurt and feel like you belong.
Known Mike for about 30 years now God father to my Son. Always gives great classes and info and you can learn alot from him and he brings in TOP TALENT for people to learn from the best in the business
This is definitely not your typical CrossFit gym...its BETTER, by far! Ive trained here most of the past 10 years, with some time off to work out in a traditional crossfit gym. The focus here is on kettlebells and body weight movements, mostly. Mike is one of the best kettlebell trainers in the world, with years of KB training experience plus many more years of martial arts training on top of that. Over time, Mike has gradually shifted the focus to everyone training smartly, training for longevity. If you are pushed so hard that you are too sore to work out for a few days, or if you end up injured, well thats not really a productive program. Mike is constantly learning, studying, working to improve the training protocols to help us all get/stay fit for the long term, without injury. He WILL tell you to use less weight, or a slightly easier protocol, if he sees that is what YOU need on that particular day. Hell also push you to improve something in every single workout - a better time, more poundage moved, more rounds completed - something! He is a stickler for solid technique and makes sure you are using good/correct form - again, its all about longevity, and avoiding injury. I love it here, and highly recommend trying it out.
Ive trained with Mike Krivka and John Kalil for nearly 10 years. Crossfit Koncepts, from the quality of instruction to the clientele and overall community atmosphere, is one of the best training environments you are likely to ever encounter. Whether youre in peak physical condition or just beginning your fitness journey, all are welcome here.Whereas many gyms leave you to your own devices when conducting workouts, Mike and John will actively work with you before, during and after the days workout. This is also the reason why the injury rate is virtually nonexistent among clients; proper form and technique are constantly reinforced through direct instruction and demonstration.Overall, Crossfit Koncepts is a relatively small, tight knit, and welcoming community with top caliber instructors. I strongly encourage anyone who wishes to get stronger and move better to stop in; your present and future self will thank you for it.
There is no better Kettlebell Teacher on the East coast than Mike Krivka. If you want to learn this powerful correctly and effectively Mike is the guy. This gym is is a crossfit but also a gym of Movement and proper technique. I encourage you to check it out.
Crossfit Koncepts has been a part of my life for the past 12+ years. As a former college athlete who still competes, these unique workouts keep me motivated and have helped me learn about functional movement. The atmosphere is nothing like a typical crossfit gym. We are taught to scale workouts up or down based on our abilities, injuries, etc and never pushed with the harder, faster, heavier mentality. If you want to learn the correct way to use a kettlebells and can handle a little cursing, check this place out!
I’ve been a member for 11 years now and couldn’t be happier. I tried a number of different gyms or workout methods over the years and this is the one that stuck. The combination of strength training and cardio from two incredible trainers, plus the variety of the WODs keeps me challenged every workout.
CrossFit Koncepts is a fantastic community of supportive and likeminded individuals led by a training director (Mike Krivka) who believes passionately in sharing his considerable knowledge and skill to make you a smarter, stronger and more confident physical version of yourself. If you value your health and mental wellbeing, want elite level coaching and to have fun at the same time then this is the only option you should be considering.
I’ve been working out at Crossfit Koncepts for over nine years, and can honestly say this place has changed my life. The focus is not on personal records or the fastest time, but training to improve your mobility, flexibility, and strength, achieved mostly through the use of kettlebells and bodyweight exercises. While the workouts are challenging, they can be scaled to any level, and there is nothing that will make you feel more badass than swinging around a heavy kettlebell!. No matter how good (or bad) my day is, I always walk out feeling better than I did when I walked in, thanks to the great community, created by one of the world’s finest kettlebell instructors, Mike Krivka. There is no one you will find locally who is more knowledgeable about fitness, or more dedicated to continuous improvement. Crossfit Koncepts is definitely worth serious consideration for your fitness needs.
Have been going here for a little over a year and this place is awesome. The owner Mike is a fantastic trainer and has tonnes of experience to go along with it. Have lost more weight here than I have ever managed on my own and at the same time have improved my strength and conditioning . Both John and Mike are great trainers and are determined to improve your form, technique and strength for longevity rather than focusing on numbers alone.
Best Training on the East Coast. Mike Krivka is Amazing. If you are looking to get in shape or to learn amazing skills, highly recommend this place.
Some of our friends go here and love it.
Mike Krivka and the CrossFit Koncepts Team provide the areas BEST strength and conditioning training available. Sound principals, unmatched technique and a fun, friendly, but challenging atmosphere. Two Thumbs up!
Koncepts is the Holy Grail of the modern garage gym, offering high quality and experienced training in a great facility. It offers a more considered approach to the CrossFit brand than many other gyms bearing the name, and uniquely features kettlebells as its preferred tool of strength and conditioning. The barbells, boxes, etc. are present and feature frequently of course, but Mike has decades of experience with the kettlebell (and various martial arts) and a seemingly infinite pool of knowledge regarding their use.The workouts have a great atmosphere and there is a real community feel to the place. You will be made welcome and allowed to learn and integrate at your own pace. Unlike many places the coaching never stops and youll feel like you are always learning new skills and improving. Mike will find what specifically works for you and make sure that you understand how to get better - you wont just have the same cue yelled at you over and over again with the expectation that youll get it the hundredth time.Having suffered through the darker side of the typical CrossFit gym, I can safely say that Koncepts provides a welcoming, sincere, and experienced environment that is focused on making people stronger and healthier safely. This is the only gym I will ever need, and if I ever leave the area I might have to find a way to take it with me...
This place helped me get back my athleticism. Thanks John!
Ive been training with Mike Krivka and John Kalil at CK for the past four years. Every session with them begins with roughly 20-30 minutes of warm-up exercises, mobility work and the practice of the movements to be used in the WOD. Not only does this allow for continual improvement in skill but is also largely responsible for the near total absence of workout-related injuries among clients. Considering that, as Mike reminds us, that the typical training lifespan of the average crossfitter is roughly 7 months (due to injury, poor technique leading to injury, etc.), I can attest that Mike and John are the real deal when it comes to training. Coaching does not stop once the warm ups are over; youll find it all throughout the WOD and after it, as well, during cool-down exercises; this can only help you in achieving your fitness goals.Safety, proper form and mobility improvements are the order of the day at CK. Even the most innocuous sounding bits of advice from Mike and John can wind up translating into significant strength and movement gains. In the end, its about how well can we function, not how much we can lift or how fast can we run. Make no mistake, however, you will get stronger and faster working out at CK adhering to Mikes and Johns instruction. Listen to what they have to say and give it your all in putting the work into your training.Dont be afraid to scale portions of or the whole WOD; not only is scaling encouraged for those still growing accustomed to the exercises, it simply makes sense. Theres no point risking injury on an exercise for which youre not physically ready. On the flip side, youre also encouraged to challenge yourself if certain exercises have become too easy during workouts. Mike and John have a host of modifications that can make that too easy exercise much more difficult. There are no fire breathers at CK and youre only competing against yourself. The environment is welcoming and has ended up becoming like a second home for me. In closing, I can say this with certainty: Mike and John are superb instructors and you wont be disappointed when training with them.
This gym uses kettlebells as their primary tool for workouts. I never used a kettlebell in my life. I used to weightlift at a gym spending 2-3 hours isolating muscles. With kettlebells and with the knowledge that the trainers have here, I get to workout my entire body in 1 hour. Kettlebells are hard to learn. It requires a lot of practice. Mike Krivka is very well known in the kettlebell community as one of the best. He concentrates in the actual teaching and concepts behind every movement. Doing as many reps as possible in a set time is not the main goal. The fast reps and strength will come naturally after you learn the technique. Overall I am very happy with this gym.
I started crossfit in New Jersey and when I moved to Maryland I found Koncepts. I was a member here for 4 months. If you are looking for more in-depth kettle bell training, Mike/Koncepts is the only place you should go to. He is extremely knowledgeable and knows kettle bell details inside and out. However, If you have been a member of a REAL Crossfit gym, and are looking for another strict Crossfit gym, this is not the place for you.The trainers do the workouts with you 90% of the time so they are not completely focused on you (which is what you are paying them for) and they are focused on their own workouts. Mike also has a tendency to bad-mouth the other trainer, John which can create an uncomfortable atmosphere. Both trainers are extremely different and while both are knowledgeable, I got hurt twice while John was watching me. After I was being complimented on my form, I pinch my SI nerve in my back and had muscle spasms going through my left hamstring. Clearly, I wasnt doing something right to be injured so badly, yet I was being told good job.Unlike most Crossfit gyms, you can come and go as you please. People will show up 15-30 minutes late for class (to the point where they completely miss all instructions) and just jump in the workout, even though they have already disrupted the group without any repercussions. The classes never start on time, so if you show up at least 10 minutes before the workout (like most real Crossfits require) you are wasting your time. If you show up 10 minutes after class starts that is when everyone is getting together. The classes tend to be overcrowded since there are no online sign ups or cutoff limits. Also, unlike most Crossfit gyms, no one pushes you here. Mike will push and push you to use heavier weights BUT they dont push you to do your workout non-stop or faster. NEVER in my life have I heard take a break so many times, and I dont think I ever heard anyone say LETS GO ever at that gym. When you have people telling you its okay to stop, have water, breathe, etc. it ruins your motivation.Because of this gym, I not only gained too much weight (not all muscle) but I also lost my love and motivation for crossfit. Now, for me personally, I need a more cardio intensive workout. I need to be doing more than just throwing around a kettle bell. I need sprints, ball slams, wall balls, etc. to get a better workout. No one knows my body better than I do, especially since I lost 40lbs before joining my first crossfit. Of course, you can bring diet into question but I do eat healthy and I tend to stick around the 1500 calorie range daily- including workouts (which is normal for my body).Lastly, the owner, Mike, doesnt understand the difference between personal and business. I left the gym after my 4 months, I told him that I gained weight that I wasnt happy with and that these workouts werent working for me because they werent enough cardio mixed with them. He found out that I joined another Crossfit gym, called me and yelled at me, then he also decided to post about me on Facebook for the rest of the members to see. The maturity level of him astounds me and God only knows what he said about me in the actual class.Bottom line, dont waste your time here. If you have done crossfit before, you wont feel like this is a realgym. If you have never done crossfit before, I guess you wouldnt know the difference but dont brag about being a Crossfitter cause this doesnt count.
Nice people
