Good quality food. However, the German potato salad is warm, not cold like every other potato salad Ive had. Im assuming its supposed to be this way, but I prefer mine cold. I think cold would have been a better compliment to the hot meats we had.Place gets really busy so prepare to wait and come early. There are 2 parking lots available which get full, but should be adequate for a full house.
Food reminds me of nursing home food. Beef was funky on the Haus Saurbraten. The noodle dish tastes like barbeque sauce. Sauerkraut-bratwurst Balls were good but there was little to no pork in it.Heres the description from the menu for the balls:A German Tradition! Sauerkraut and Schmidt’s own Bratwurst combination coated with crispy breading served with creamy mustard sauce. There was no bratwurst in those fried bratwurst balls. I liked them anyways but it the description was misleading.I did order dinner menu items around 1pm so if thats an issue, Ill try again ordering dinner items at dinner time instead.**edited and added menu items.
Schmidt’s in German village is a must if you’re in Columbus. Leave your calorie counter at home Old world food and Full Body beers, good wines full bar . Apple Strudel and Bavarian Cream Puffs Oh My’. Walk in and step back in time . Looking for a banquet room they have serval . The staff was extremely nice and friendly.
Absolutely wonderful establishment! Schmidts is a Columbus favorite, one of the most recognized names, especially in the German Village community as they have been supplying meat goods since the 1880s! One of my family favorites is the Bahama Mama® The Original - my grandfather always made sure these were on the grill at any family get together. Just ate there again and got the Mama Reuben with hot kraut and ground sausage and my aunt got the Honey Roasted Turkey Reuben and both were amazing, staff is lovely and the food was served quick and absolutely fantastic!!
Ive had Schmidts food several times before but today was the first time I actually got to sit down and eat there. The outside of the restaurant is super cute and the inside gives you that authentic German feel with the decor, exposed brick, and signage/pictures. The hostesses and waitresses wear dirndls (German dresses) which are adorable and keep the German atmosphere. There is a nice variety of food choices and you are obligated to get a cream puff if youve never had one! 😋 These things are the size of your face. Overall, the restaurant is kinda small so Id recommend calling ahead if you have a large group (5+ people) and they do have pies (whole and pieces) and other food items ready for purchase to go by the register.
I have been in Columbus, Ohio for a month but have not found too many restaurants worth reviewing. A local recommended a seafood restaurant, but coming from Virginia Beach I had doubts. While exploring I stumbled into Germantown where Schmidts Sausage Haus is located. An old German restaurant located at the end of a long street, sitting at 4.7 stars on google with almost 8,000 reviews. I had to try it...The real star of the appetizer menu was the pretzel bites. These were not your standard dense pretzel nuggets, they were light, airy, and had more it a savory salted donut taste and feel. Dip those into the beer cheese and you get an amazing German meal. I would get a to-go bag of just the pretzel nuggets with beer cheese alone. The sausages were a mix of savory flavors and one slightly spiced sausage. Just like the currywurst, they each had a crunch or pop when biting into them. The sliced bun was served toasted but wasn’t seasoned, so I was surprised it wasn’t toasted with butter at least.Check out the full review at garwoodgrub.com
The waiter I believe his name was Harris) extremely great and on top of things constantly, always there checking on things and the rest of the staff was phenomenal being right there to help him. We had a group of 15 and we all got our food nice and hot at the same time as well as our drinks, glasses were never empty and he always made sure we had everything we needed and even stayed on top of the deserts first off asking if we wanted dessert and second off asking if we wanted it for here or to go. They close at 9 p.m. the entire restaurant was empty except for our party and it was shortly after 9:30 p.m. when we left. The staff was great the food was phenomenal and filling. Definitely a place we will revisit next time we are in Columbus. Thank you all for your great service! The prices were great we spent a good amount per person but that was for alcoholic drinks, for appetizers, for a huge dinner, and dessert oh, definitely worth the price!
First time Ive ever made it here, and I was impressed. Its a popular spot so be prepared for a wait, but theres a souvenir shop and a delightful fudge shop near by to browse while you wait. The food was top tier, I tried the sausage sampler and the cabbage rolls and keep room for dessert because the cream puff was life changing. I will definitely be back to sample more of this menu
Köstlich!!! I had been wanting to come here for a couple of years since I had first heard about when researching Columbus. My wife and I stopped here on our way back to West Virginia from Michigan. There was no wait to dine in. The menu was compact but with perfect offerings. I ordered the Turkey Reuben along with the pretzel bites and beer cheese. My wife had the meatloaf.Food was out of this world. Good portions, great quality all at a fair price. Delicious!!
Amazing evening. Loved the atmosphere, service and ambiance. I had the all you can eat sausage platter with German potato salad, apple sauce and green beans w/ spatzel. My wife had the house schnitzel with mushroom gravy, potato salad, green beans and spatzel. We added extra gravy and curry sauce ( which were additional charges). We enjoyed ourselves and the restaurant as well. My dinner was excellent. My wifes schnitzel was thin and a bit over cooked but her sides were excellent. The dessert of the night was the butterscotch creme puff and German chocolate cake both were enjoyable. This was good German comfort food. This is a great stop if you enjoy German experience!! We will visit this place again and try some other parts of the menu!
We ordered the signature platter, and the waiter was super nice and kind to directly help us separate into two plates without us asking for it! The food was delicious, and I would recommend to eat them all together instead of separately since the flavors just blended together very well. They put some plastic boards to provide social distancing, and the staff sanitized tables well. Would recommend to visitors to the German village to have a meal here!
Not like it was before pandemic, 16.00 dollars for there sampler. 4 one quarter pieces on sausage that is 3.00 dollars for one link. A scoop of sauerkraut, a scoop of potatoes a piece of toast and canned applesauce. Will not be back
We stopped in the restaurant with hopes of having an authentic and beautiful experience.I was living in Bavaria for 3 years- hoping to get something authentic or close to authentic.Food was not authentic, bathroom dirty…Not good experience. Sauerkraut did taste like straight from the jar, very, very sour.Chicken noodle soup tasted like from a can.Not good and very salty.Gravy with mushrooms - also grocery store taste, like an instant sauce from Wal-Mart.Bread, has nothing to do with good European, Artesian bread. Food was tasteless and bland, it hardly resembled authentic German food. All the side dishes were underwhelming and tasted bad.Our table was sticky too - I asked the waiter to clean after drinks were served. I felt bad and embarrassed to ask for that. It seems like the restaurant has hard working and nice serving staff. It is a shame. People who visit Germany and know German food, great taste and appreciate German clean bathrooms, will notice the difference right away.Village is beautiful with lots of beautiful, old houses with absolutely beautiful flowers.I hope you can improve - beautiful restaurant and decoration.Thank you.
Great place to bring the family! They have live entertainment and the kids loved it. The pretzel nuggets with beer cheese and currywurst starters were delicious! Service was excellent.
I love this place but there are some improvements needed. Personally, I think the place should be kept more clean. The staff are not attentive when it’s busy, our party of 8 was not attended to for the entirety of 1.5 hours after the food was served. They also should make the cream puff more moist because as of right now it’s very dry. The lines are always long so prepare to wait.
Absolutely the best sausage I have ever eaten. highly recommend. you shouldnt leave without having the 1/2 lb cream puff
Awesome food and a even better waitress. My waitress sat me down with a menu, she gave me a sample of a beer she suggested which I went ahead and ordered along with my meal. My meal was brought to me in record time for any restaurant. The food lived up to everything I’d heard about it and reminded me of good German home cooking. Can’t wait to come back.
In town for a few days to rest from a busy schedule. My co-workers and I were looking for a unique place to eat. We found Schmidts on Google Maps and it had great ratings so we decided to try it out. Definitely has a mom and pop, non-chain feel to it which is so nice. We were seated next to the bar and served by the bartender. We dined around 4pm so it wasnt very busy. We started with their pretzels and fried, breaded kraft and sausage balls. Both fresh, warm and delicious. I had the Bahama Mama sausage platter with kraft and German potato salad and applesauce. Excellent. My co-workers meals were also excellent. We took dessert to go. Schmidts is part of the German Village portion of Columbus. The area around Schmidts has cobblestone streets and cool neighborhoods. Very highly recommended.
The drive here with the help google map was interesting. The directions at the last second to turn here then drive down 3 small allies to this establishment was annoying until we arrived. IUpon entry of the building the was an accordion player, we were taken to our table. The decor and how the employees dressed was spot on for a German Restaurant. Our waiter was amazing, we ordered the pretzels with beer cheese, they were amazing with the beer cheese tasting amazing. My wife then ordered a light beer, suggested by the waiter in which she enjoyed. Then came our dinner, it was an endless sausage with potatoes, kraut and applesauce. Everything was spot on, the taste was amazing. The musician was outstanding making our experience here a 10 out of 10. With that being said we will be back and suggest whoever comes to Grove City or Columbus to visit this place.
AN ABSOLUTE TREASURE. My boyfriend and I love this restaurant and the location. We are from out of state and when we travel we make it a point to stop for dinner. The wait is worth it, and the staff is welcoming.Love the sausages. Love the desserts. Yummy beer!Cant wait to come back!
Absolutely fantastic experience at this restaurant. If your looking for authentic affordable German food this is the place to go. There smash potato cakes are to die for! They have a wide variety of German beer and the best cream puffs around. If I could give 10 stars I would.
All I can say is WOW. Phenomenal authentic German food with a good price point for the amount of food you get. Don’t miss out on their monthly cream puff flavor—May’s was white chocolate berry and it was out of the park. I couldn’t finish my food I had so much.
Well what can I say, Today I wish I was there again. So delicious and the people working there are very nice. ❤ We loved it.
This place was incrediable, from the authentic look and feel, to the small deli they have set up just as you enter. The waitresss wear dirndls which help you feel like your really sitting at a restaurant in Germany. We had the Weiner Schnitzel and one of the jumbo cream puffs (peanut butter fudge) and both were perfect! The schnitzel was cooked perfectly, crispy breading with a moist cut of meat. The puff was so good that had I had an ounce of room left I would have tried to stuff another one down. A definite must eat for anyone visiting Columbus!
Worth the wait. Fresh, tasty. Sauerbraten and Schnitzel. Yumm
Great food, great atmosphere! We came for the live music and to celebrate a special birthday with multi-generational family and friends. Food portions are generous. We were there for an early dinner, but had to wait almost 2 hours for a group of 13 to get seated. Wonderful drink options for all ages, and dont forget the delicious deserts...cream puffs to chocolate cake. Note: we didnt rent a party room upstairs, due to the stair access for some family members; we waited for first floor dining area and the first floor doesnt accept reservations at this time.
Had the bratwurst platter and a stein of the gold beer. Excellent pairing, with the bold sourness of the sauerkraut cutting through the richness of the sausage, and the crispness of the beer perfectly complementing the potatoes seasoning.Ambience was casual with a lot of cool vintage photos as decor. Service was great, and waiter was very pleasant.Definitely worth the visit.
Highly reccomend sampler platter and a flight of beer. Whats good here? EVERYTHING.
Smart business using plastic panels to help with social distancing at this challenging time. Food was very tasty with only minor critiques - all sides pretty much had the sour flavor, needing some balancing and the pasta sauce was on the saltier side. Dont get me wrong - we were overall very satisfied. Cream puff was HUGE!
Loved loved loved this little place! We found Schmidts during a weekend in Columbus, and it was such a nice surprise. The food and beer were delicious and authentic, and the service was impeccable. Loved the staffs German attire, and I should add that the accordion player was the best! He is a fantastic musician and funny at that! I recommend the cream puff...to die for! We cant wait to visit Schmidts again on our next trip to Columbus...we will also be recommending this awesome place to our friends!
Schmidts is always welcoming & wonderful. Our order was placed for carry out said it would take 20 to 30 minutes, it was super busy like normal, it was lunch time but it was ready on time, waitress was wonderful, friendly and put silverware in our bags. They have delicious desserts (German chocolate cake, their famous Cream Puffs of various flavors, cherry cheese tarts, cream pies by the slice or whole, ice cream, apple Strudel) they offer a kids menu, a buffet during lunch and possibly dinner. They have soups, salads, appetizers sausage platters which includes their Famous Bahama Mamas, various side dishes, lots of sandwiches, and Dinner platters. Beverages includes Pepsi products, Lemonade, hot tea, coffee, and hot chocolate but no sweet tea. Even a vegetarians will be able to find something to eat. The redskin smashed potatoes & red cabbage are delicious, the chicken griller on a tasty pretzel bun is delicious, chicken crepes with waffle fries for children are delicious, the Chicken Schnitzel with the cheese sauce on the side is fantastic. It is expensive make sure to bring your wallet. Call ahead to place your take-out order and ask questions if you have special nutritional needs or concerns.
A lively restaurant with delicious German dishes. We enjoyed strolling around the neighborhood after lunch.
Great food, great service, and great beer. The bartender Laurenzo took great care of me and the Bahama Mama Sausages were amazing.
The food is not Authentic! The sauce is not the right brown wine sauce...The Beer was Good👍
Great sausages and wonderful German potato salad. I had a tasty dark beer that was on tap
Everything was amazing.....food, service and atmosphere!
Nice environment. Great food. Large menu. Friendly staff
Service was amazing and fast. Went for lunch and everything was amazing! Mamas Rueban was delicious as was the Four Platter Sampler with some amazing sausage and sides. We got a cream puff and chocolate cake for dessert and they did not disappoint!
Got in and got sat quickly, got greeted and drink order taken quickly, thats when it got a little slow (Please read on). During Covid it is VERY hard to determine how busy a place will be and servers dont make a good hourly wage so they dont want to go to work and get 5 tables. In otherwords deal with the slower service and be happy do be able to eat out.Tip well regardless, you dont know what all the company or business may now require of them to do between each customer...Our food was awesome and when the server needed help for a few minutes a hostess jumped right in. Im very proud that Schmidts has a TEAM of great employees that work together during these tough times. If I lived closer I would go much more frequently just to support a great team and enjoy some awesome food. Way to go Schmidts TEAM!!!!
Fantastic German Cuisine Experience!! Ive never had anything like it. Must try if youre in the area.
Had a small buffet pre-arranged- a very polite server assigned to our group- he took excellent care of us! Food was delicious, well presented and served at the proper temperature- Pricing was reasonable and quality and quantity was as promised! Definitely would plan another gathering here at Schmidts!,
Great server, great food and atmosphere. Cream puffs Yummmmmm
Authentic German food with amazing food and service. They have something for everyone. Had their creme puffs and tarts that were excellent. The pies and cake looked every bit just as good. This is not a fast food place so plan your time accordingly. Its an experience where your food is fresh and not microwaved. Couldnt want anything more.
Got there around 9pm. Got seated right away. I got pretzels, sausage stew special and potato soup. It was all delicious. The potato soup, Id def get again. The stew was more than I could handle but still good. A bit of a kick. I got the cream puffs as well and Id def get that again!!
Delicious, traditional German food in a charming German village. Staff wears traditional German costumes. The restaurant is spacious and Covid safe. It was definitely well worth the trip! Oh and dont forget to swing by their candy and fudge shop just across the street.
Stopped by here with my husband recently since we were in the area visiting our daughter... had to see what the hype was about! cute restaurant and decent food. server was nice.... only problem we had was when we left and got some creampuffs to go (which were to die for!!) and the carryout girl had such an attitude! was very rude towards my husband.. you guys need to check her attitude! very rude girl. would expect that type of attitude at mcdonalds but not a restaurant like this.....
The food is really good. Very popular restaurant. We got a to go order and the total was just north of $50 for two people. I felt that the sides were too small for that amount of money. It was basically like an ice cream scoop per side. I’m glad I ordered an additional Bahama mama. For $50 there should be leftovers.
Enjoyed our visit. We split an app and entree and it was more than enough food for the two of us. Service was prompt and efficient, although our server was super scripted, and lacked individuality or interpersonal skills. We ate too much to have desert, but they looked amazing and portion sizes were of gargantuan proportion. They lost one star due to the lack of cleanliness of the restroom.
I love German food and Schmidts is an institution. Every item on my plate was delicious and the PB creampuff was the perfect ending to a great experience.
The most wonderful place for German food their cream puffs weigh a pound and a 1/2 and are wonderful
Awesome! Thats only description it needs.
It was ok you got to really like German food to eat here.
We went for dinner on a Saturday night around 5pm. We were told it was a 20 minute wait for a table. There were plenty of benches outside to wait at which was fine. We were called for our table right around 15 minutes I would say, and we were seated at the worst table possible. It was just my husband and myself, we were put at a table for 4 in the middle of the restaurant. Waiters and the hostess brushed past my husband dozens of times as they ran around. It was definitely a very busy night for them. By the time we left the wait was almost an hour. Had we known the seating area would be so tight we would not have eaten here. The food was okay, not too memorable but also not too expensive. There were no prices for the drinks on the menu and the beer my husband ordered was extremely overpriced and we were not told that. All in all it was a very unimpressive experience. The restaurant seemed very touristy and very busy so perhaps on a slower night it would have been better.
The nicest restaurant I have been in years. Wasnt easy to find (not on a main street) but well worth the effort. German style restaurant, excellent variety of sausages (wurst), meat, cakes, and beer (bottled and draft). Music was also nice, felt like we were at October fest in Munich. Covid 19 update: dining room is open, clean and staff are very helpful and friendly
I really love this place! I had the sausage sampler, and all four of them were very tasty! Ive never actually enjoyed potato salad, but theirs I could eat whole bowl of! Really friendly and attentive staff, too!
I tried the sausage sampler all were delicious, the kraut was nice and firm not too soggy. And I was very pleasantly surprised by the German pototoe salad, best Ive ever had. Oh yeah service was excellent and you cant beat the atmosphere. Ill be back next time Im in Columbus.
The food is very delicious and the atmosphere has you wanting to come back.
Legendary cream puffs is no exaggeration. I had the sausage and bean soup, it is perfect! The strawberry fizz was delightful. This place is worth the wait if there is a line- you can walk around and look at all the pretty gardens and they will call you when its time to return.
I have been looking forward to eating this food for a couple of months when I Googled the surrounding area of our hotel. Tonight was the night...I ordered the Hoffbrau Schnitzel with the smashed potatoes and sauerkraut as my 2 sides. The pork was overcooked in several spots, dry and impossible to eat with just the plastic fork and no knife was included. Not to mention no napkins either...although there was several ketchup packages, we didnt have fries. I ended up throwing out my second patty as I had already covered it with gravy before I realized it was impossible to eat. My daughter faired better than I did. She had the ham and Swiss cheese on the pretzel bun. She really liked it. She had the smashed red potatoes as her side as well. I ordered the cream puff with chocolate filling. That was good, the filling was very good. Glad my daughter was happy since the trip is for her...but man, my end was a huge disappointment.
Wonderful food, excellent service, prices reasonable
We had a 40 minute wait for our table and it was worth it. The food was so good! The potato pancakes and applesauce were delicious as was everything else. And everyone from the hostess to our server was friendly and helpful. The restaurant is located in Germantown so while you wait you can walk around and view the shops. Will definitely be back if we are ever in the Columbus area again!
Excellent food and service. Very authentic, especially the servers who wore their lederhosen.
Great service. Food was awesome! Price is reasonable! Get a peanut butter fudge cream puff!
The food, atmosphere and staff here are amazing! If your are in Columbus you need to make your way down to this top notch restaurant. There are also other places to visit right in front of the restaurant as well.
Decided to try Schmidts in the German Village today. Visited around 3:30 on Sunday & this place was hopping. After a short wait we were seated. With our current new normal you must scan the QR code to view the menu. The overall decor is what you would expect in a long time family restaurant. Family pictures & awards amongst other things. Good size bar area, but empty due to restrictions. Dividers have been permanently installed between booths & hanging dividers near tables. Our order arrived very quickly. As an appetizer selected the pretzels & honey mustard then added a side of beer cheese. Not your typical soft pretzel as these are lightly deep fried. The honey mustard is your typical store bought nothing special & beer cheese was as expected. The Sausage Sampler offered a variety & was a great way to try several items. The Cabbage Rolls were topped with a tomato sauce our server compared to marinara. I did ask why the parmesan & was told thats just how they do it. Personally I didnt care for the sauce & think pairing it with pasta would be a better application. The sides were as expected & could have benefitted from some additional seasoning, but the chunky applesauce was great. Next came dessert & the Chocolate Cream Puff did not disappoint. Creamy filling mimicking that of a chocolate cream pie. Finally the Apple Strudel did not look like strudels Ive had in the past. The appearance looks more of a slab pie. Whatever they call it was good. Overall positive experience & would definitely stop again especially for a Cream Puff.
Was awesome food was great. Service was great.
Good food, good service. The kids loved the food also, which is a win.
All indoor tables are partitioned with plexi-glass - keeping all safe and noise level down too. Great food entrees with huge portions. Two ppl could easily split a single meal.
Awesome experience! The wait for a table was made better by the use of a cell phone feature that lets you see how many tables are still ahead of you, so you can visit local shops while you wait without worry of missing your turn. The service was excellent, as well as the food! We had the Reuben, Ham & Cheese, and potato cakes. Delish! The cream puff is maybe a little over-hyped, or maybe just not my kind of dessert. Sort of like a whipped custard in a cold croissant. Overall great though, and would love to go back and try the buffet!
Chocolate Creme Pie is a must. The German Village will make you forget you’re in Columbus. Make sure to stop at the fudge shop across the street.
I’m a big sausage fan, and I was impressed with the Bahama Mama (even though it’s not a very German name for a sausage). Some of the other sausages in the sausage sampler were not great, though. This place might also be one of the only places in America where you can try currywurst (which was invented in Germany in the late ‘40s), so that’s cool. The side dishes were also solid, but I wasn’t too taken with their chocolate cake. The service was fine, if a bit rushed (the place was crowded). Most of the servers wore traditional German clothes.
Not worth the trip. Food was not palatable and definitely not authentic. The sausage was was good but I have had much better. The waiter was the best thing there. He was attentive and answered all our questions.
This place is terrible! Total tourist trap. How does a German restaurant get a German chocolate cake wrong!? Ugh. And the sausage was just gross. If you find yourself here all I can recommend is the pretzel bites with cheese sauce.
We were in town and told by a relative that Schmidts was a great place to eat. We got the pretzel bites which were delicious with the beer cheese. Had the roasted pork shank which was moist and flavorful. The sweet sauerkraut was light and fresh tasting. The sauerkraut was also very good with mashed potatoes. We had the chocolate cream puff and peanut butter cream puff for dessert, also very good, light and fluffy. The atmosphere is casual, there was a tuba and accordion player at the entrance playing pleasing music. There is a lot of history in the building with a lot to look at. Very cozy.
All you can eat sausage only at this time. Not the full buffet they usually have...
Delicious sausages and dessert.
Went to bridal shower upstairs, very nice room, well prepared for guests.
