I am a contractor so I work with different insurance companies all the time. This time I am dealing with shelter. The desk agent for the homeowner personally called me and told me to submit my final invoice the day the work is complete so they can issue my final check (which is close to $3,000.00) so I did exactly as I was asked. Final invoice was submitted on sept 1st. Today is sept 28th and still no check. I called on Friday the 25th and they haven’t even issued the check yet. I have called multiple times. Every time I talk to someone different with a different answer. All this shows me is that shelter does not care to take care of business or the homeowner. Imagine having a contractor come to your house and do thousands of dollars worth of work because your insurance is paying for. But your insurance co takes so long to pay the contractor that now he is wanting you to pay the thousands of dollars out of your own pocket. If that is something you aren’t expecting to pay, it can put someone behind. At the end of the day, the homeowner is the one who signs the contract. So if insurance doesn’t keep their word, you as the homeowner will either have to pay the contractor or get sued. No one has time for that. Get you a good insurance co that won’t screw around when it’s time to take care of business.
My experience with Shelter was very difficult and inconsistent. I had to reach a supervisor to handle my insurance claim in a manageable fashion whatsoever. If you file a claim with their insurance, expect to be delayed weeks.
You will know how they are very bad when you have your first claim.
