Great place to rock climb in West loop!! Highly recommend. Chill atmosphere/vibe, and an amazing time to either escape the world, or climb with friends. Had a blast with both boulder climbing and belays. Great variety of routes and difficulty of climbs. Furthermore, everything was secure/felt safe and is professional. Clean facility and down to earth staff/ very helpful but also laid back (no petty rules/micro managing).Overall a great experience and regardless of if you are a seasoned rock climber or a newbie, this is a welcoming and fun place for all.

I’ve been a member now for about 3 months and it is certainly one of the best rock gyms that I’ve been a member of! This is the BKB location that has a good amount of top roping so make sure you pay attention to that. If you just looking for a day pass, you’ll probably be stuck to bouldering and auto belay. But back to the facility, they’ve got a little bit for everybody! In the back, they’ve got what I’d compare to a CrossFit box style gym. Complete with free weights. Upstairs they have more cardio-centric equipment and other functional equipment like punching bags. Then they have a coworking space with plenty of outlets and ergonomic chairs. Then you’ve got the rest of the facility which is dedicated to climbing (as it should be.) Routes are set by a mix of entities who really do a good job at keeping routes fresh and interesting. Personally, I prefer top roping, but they have plenty ofBouldering to sink your teeth into. If you want more, go to BKB Lincoln Park.

My husband, six month old baby and I spend 4-5 mornings here each week and we love it. It is our second home. The staff is always warm and welcoming, remembering who we are and climbing with us here and there. We don’t get any bad vibes from bringing our baby with us. The routes are changed often and it keeps things interesting. It gets busy in the evenings and on weekends but weekday mornings are perfect. We love it so much and are so grateful for the community we’ve been able to become a part of.

My wife and I were on our honeymoon in Chicago and stopped in for a climb (between servings of deep dish- we needed exercise!) and were really blown away with the service from Eric, Hannah and the rest of the team at Brooklyn Boulders. They had recommendations for things to do in the city, were very happy to share details and hear our story and made us feel genuinely welcome in the city. Also, the building is a renovated church and has awesome features, including untextured wall for a different style of climbing- more precise. Great job guys!!

Classes on learning the ropes and intro to climbing were super informative and they also have cardio, weights and the study area is awesome. From the art murals to the set up of the place the atmosphere is amazing. Always felt welcome and encouraged as a beginner and never intimidated.

To be honest it worth the price because of the bundle as long as you are an athletic person, the levels are really hard but you can get use to it IF YOU LIKE IT. Also if you are interest in to learn you can pay for other type of personal classes of rappelling.

Seems like a great gym at first but it really isn’t all that great. The free weight area is really small and I almost always have to wait for people to leave when I go. Some staff are cool, others.. not so much. They don’t really greet you and they like to make up their own rules. Also the guest pass each month that’s supposed to be a perk really isn’t, they’re so strict with them, apparently you have to bring some one new each time and doesn’t even include rental so it’s more for the gym’s benefit (staff member told me this himself) overall was really discouraged to go. Good thing this isn’t the only rock climbing gym in Chicago.

This BKB was huge and there were plenty of auto-belays (about 5 on the 55’ walls, and I think it was 2 or 4 on the shorter walls). There were many more top rope walls that you could climb after a quick belay test, and best part was that I could belay someone else who was not belay certified. Heads up, the grades were quite soft (I’m fairly new and can do a 5.9 but completed two 5.10+ here). The staff was extraordinarily nice and I ended up going three times during my work trip.

$25 for a day pass. Really high autobelay and top rope walls. A good number of bouldering problems for a place this small.I like it. Visiting Chicago for the week and needed my fix. This place is good. Staff is really nice and helpful. If I’m in Chicago again I’ll definitely be back!!Important: All of their walls are glossy. Not gritty at all. I asked and this is by design, closer to real life. So no smearing.

This used to be a good climbing gym, maybe a few years ago. Now it is a lot lower value. Some top rope routes have broken holds or bolts dangerously sticking out, for months. There’s never enough change lockers for everyone.Auto belays are very limited and a joke, not much choices to climb beyond 5.10s.It’s convenient location in the west loop is about the only good part of an otherwise overcrowded and poorly managed climbing gym.Oh, don’t bother coming here on Wednesday evenings, quarter to a third of the top rope routes are closed for assisted climbing groups. The rest is just super crowded.

Its a fun gym to climb at in youre rich. Ridiculously overpriced at $25 for a day pass especially when there really arent that many climbable routes. The staff there has no idea what theyre doing at the front counter. Every time Ive been there, it takes them 10 minutes to check me in because no one knows how the computers work. They constantly and randomly decide to change their rules and policies without any notice. I bought a punch card there about a year ago and when I bought it, I was told they dont expire. Of course, why would they? Isnt that the point of a punch card? Anyways, went back a couple months later and when I told them I had a punch card, they said it expired and I had only used one or two punches on it.So yeah, its great if you have the money to blow on it and dont care about being lied to and quite literally throwing your money away.Facility is great. Faculty is far from great.Routes are way over rated. A 10 in that gym is equivalent to an 8 elsewhere.

The route setting was pretty fun, but theres no reason why they should be charging 25 dollars for a day pass when everywhere else charges 15-16. If you just want to climb, youre better off going elsewhere. Hilariously feather bagged but really nice (I jumped two grades bouldering!). People were cool and the routes were well set. Bouldering setting left a little to be desired but overall awesome experience.I originally gave 5 stars (I was coming from a dingy, first-generation gym in Pittsburgh) but have to lower to 4.. This is purely because of the nicer options in Chicago (First Ascent). The gritty texture of the walls at First Ascent lend themselves to a vastly superior climbing experience.

VERY VERY EXPENSIVE. That Being said...The problems and routes are challenging, and the smooth walls provide a very different experience than you would find at some of the other climbing locations around Chicago. Because of how smooth the walls are, you are forced to only use the holds that the route-setters have set for you - It adds a unique challenge. A little like climbing on quartzite up at Devils Lake, WI.A justification for that high price point could be the work area that is included, which I imagine is awesome if you work in the West Loop.

Absolutely atrocious management. Worst experience Ive ever had at any of the 5 other rock gyms Ive visited throughout the country. There were way too few auto belays for a gym this size. Also, despite the fact that Ive been climbing consistently for years, they wanted me to take a 2 hour, $79 class before I could belay, all because they saw me ask another climber to help me practice tying in before my belay check. I pleaded extensively with management in person and via email. Said I didnt want to have to write bad reviews but that I just wanted my voice to be heard. They accused me of holding them hostage with bad reviews. Not really. Just wanted my voice to be heard as a customer. Just look at their Yelp reviews. How does a place this cool looking get such horrible reviews? Bad management.

I picked my son up early from Adventure camp, hes 10.5 and most of the kids were 5-7 yr olds. The camp was clearly catered to the younger crowd and he was given mixed messages from the counselors. The games they played were childish and the one thing he wanted to do and asked repeatedly to do was to climb the big wall in the harness. He was told no or it would be at the end of the day. When asked what might have made the day better he said climbing the wall, he was told he could have done while they kids were playing another game. He was super frustrated that they knew what he wanted to do and didnt offer it when it was a good time. I realize the dynamics change day to day given kids ages of who signed up and we clearly got a bummer of a day but everyone knew that my son wasnt so sure about the experience and they didnt make it fun for him, instead they focused on 5-7 age appropriate games and activities. We are very disappointed and I doubt my son will ever want to go back and give what looks to be a awesome place another chance. :(

Of all BKB locations Ive visited, this one is by far the most chill. Im almost always traveling alone and show up alone and multiple times have immediately found someone else also looking for a belay and buddied up. Like the other BKB locations they have autobelays, but they removed a couple of them maybe a year ago. Lots of routes with good side-pulls. Like all BKB gyms the route setting does tend to be a bit more linear and doesnt traverse much. If you are used to the sandpapery Walltopia style of wall, you are in for a slippery surprise. The co-working space overlooks the boulder area and front desk, Wifi is good. Showers are stocked with everything youd need to clean up after a climb session.

I planned to use this guest passes to invite my girlfriend at least twice a month. However, out of nowhere, they came up with a new rule for these guest passes: It had to be a DIFFERENT guest every time! No way to invite the same person twice! WTH?I could only climb at night, music at that time was usually so loud that it was hard to communicate with my belayer. They promised a chalk-bag and some other free things with the 3-month memberships, but we never got it and they keep bringing up weird excuses about it.After my 3-month membership was up, they extended my subscription for one more month without my consent. When I called to cancel that additional month, they said that I had to let them know at least 15 days in advance and they charged my credit card anyway. I didnt end up using a single day of that month, I really didnt feel like going back to that place. So far, facilities are cool but I am extremely happy about the fact that there are plenty of other options for climbing in Chicago.

Great events and community as well, climbers are majorly friendly and helpful and its awesome to see people with disabilities and children attacking the walls with gym support! My 10 year old has been wanting to try this for a while so she was super excited, while my 8 year old was nervous and was worried she wouldnt be good at it. And the two instructors Gabriel and Sabine were AMAZING. They built up my 8 year olds confidence so that by the end she was fearless on the belay. They did a great job at developing the 10 year olds understanding of climbing. And with the two 12 year olds, coaching them and challenging them to try something a bit harder, climb a bit higher, do something they werent sure they could. taking nothing from Gabriel, I think the girls really appreciated Sabine, and they really liked having a female role model. Climbing experience was great there. Everything else suspect. They try to nickel and dime you for everything and just feel sneaky at every turn. They say you get 2 free guest passes each month, but thats copmletely false because after you buy the membership you find out it is only for new guests only. They require a 15-day notice on membership cancellation, which is absolutely ridiculous for a month-to-month membership that they can start/end with a click of a button. They also try to get you to pay $10/month if you want to suspend or cancel your membership so you dont have to pay the $100 activiation fee upon restarting. They also just make cancelling the membership difficult in general, purposefully. No way to do it online and youve really got to search for it. I read over their membership agreement for a solid hour before signing up and they still kept surprising me with stupid garbage. If youve got a bunch of money to waste so you dont care about that stuff, then this place is pretty awesome. Otherwise be prepared to slim down your wallet unnecessarily.

We went on Saturday for the Learn the Ropes course via LivingSocial. Our instructor was Paul, who was thorough. They taught you all the basics of CLimbing 101. However, they did not teach you how to use an auto-belay, which I was a bit disappointed about. Front desk staff was friendly, well-informed, and helpful. However, they dont mention bringing a lock to keep your belongings safe, so FYI ***bring a lock***! We loved it so much, we purchased the special deal they had for one months membership for $30 which was suppose to come with two guests passes per month as well a return day pass with all gear included. However, again, since we went mid-September, they dont mention that it cannot start the next day, it has to be a full month, ie Oct 1- Oct 31st. So we ended up paying for the last half of Sept, as a prorate, which we were fine with because we really enjoyed the activity. But that might be a not so fun surprise for others. There is plenty of FREE street parking WEST of Racine. Its nice that they are open til midnight. Avoid Tuesday nights as thats the night of their meetups, so they bring in about 60-70 women = limited number of paths available for beginners like myself. They have sinks right by the mezzanine, so the bathrooms dont get overcrowded. I dow ish the staff would all wear the same shirts so that you could tell who is staff from the clients. They have free WiFi, a work area, weights, ping pong table, a yoga studio (all of which I intend to utilize!). I am pretty pumped about the individual challenges - both mental and physical, the trust and communication I will build with my fellow belayers, and building up my physique! For those who return a different day, it is $5 harness rental and $5 shoe rental. CLIMB ON!
