Had a broken ac compressor. Rather than just replace the entire AC like other shops wanted to do, they took the time to assess the problem, explain the situation to me, and only replace the parts that needed replacing. Saved me hundreds of dollars

These guys are very knowledgeable and helpful they did great fixing my truck! The prices are fair and they go out of their way to get the job done. Steering wheel was shaking pretty bad when I got to higher speeds, took my 2007 toyota camry in to have an alignment done after I replaced a tie rod end. They told me my wheel bearing was bad. The one I replaced the summer before. Charged me $600 to replace a $180 part and even after the work was done the shaking was still there. Took it in for a tire change at another place a few weeks later and the shaking was gone afterwards. Turns out my tires were causing the shaking. I had Big Jims give me the old ball bearing that they replaced, from what I could tell, other than it was in pieces, it wasnt cracked or damaged beyond what they had to do to get it out. The one I replaced the summer before was clearly cracked when I took it out. They made me overpay for a repair and it didnt even fix the issue I came in for. If the bearing was somehow what was causing the issue then they should have told me what was causing my bearing to keep going bad instead of putting a $600 band aid on it.

Did an AC recharge in half an hour, and under the price they quoted me on the phone. Excellent service, will be going here for any future repairs I need in CR

WOW where should I begin...Big Jim, and Elizabeth took great care of needs last week when I stopped by to have my battery checked and brakes looked at. My battery was 5 years old so I decided to replace it. Just a good insurance policy for me going into winter. Jim checked my brakes and he said I have about 40% left so I am good to go for awhile. Jim recommended I replace my wiper blades and I was due for a oil change. They checked my tires for me also and changed the cabin air filter and engine air filter I can’t believe how dirty they were getting. I am so glad I can go to Big Jim’s and know that I will be not ripped off by some salesman’s bull****Thank you Big Jim’s 5 Stars always!!!

Took in the car today for back brake repairs and an oil change. As always, the service was top notch, Jim and the rest of the staff were very friendly, and they performed all work in a two hour time frame. Jim explained to me exactly what needed to be done to fix the problem and gave a very fair estimate. I have been taking my vehicle to this shop for years now, and it is the only shop I would ever think of going to for any automotive repair needs. There is no other place to take your car....especially when it is a classic VW. First, let me tell you about the knowledge and experience base at Big Jims. Sarge and Jim know more about classic cars than anyone I have met in the Cedar Rapids area! There are even mechanics locally who say they are experts about the classic VW and they have proven to know nothing (or be lying). Jim and Sarge have helped us navigate buying our 71 bug from a disreputable mechanic in the area and ultimately giving us a car safe to drive and enjoy, and always serviced in a timely fashion and at a fair price! We have also taken our not-so-classic pick-up and cars in to Big Jim and found them, again, to be serviced quickly and fairly - and NOT needing to return because it was done right the first time! It is so hard to find a mechanic to trust today. Took my 03 jeep liberty in for vehicle wandering above 55, major clunk in front end, and oil change. Turns out i needed upper control arms and upper and lower ball joints. As well as tie rod ends. They nailed that and the alignment very well. No more wandering. Still have major clunk in front end. Desk lady said it was coming from the rear. Checked for myself and the right side sway bar link in the front has a loose bolt at the bottom. (Not hard to find which end a clunk is coming from) Asked for it to be taken care of but tech said the links are fine. Clearly not. Good work but shady as well. Almost forgot. Grease handprints all over the fenders and bumper.

Ive heard about this crooked & shady shop from my few mechanic friends. They like to overcharge you for service & labor. My friend went to this shop recently to get her SUV fixed. But ended up costing $1,700 for just a new flywheel and a starter? Thats a big rip off. Not to mention, they called my friend dumb because she is deaf when she is trying to negotiate.In the end, I will NOT recommend this shop. 1/10

(Update 10/16/17... Had the jeep back for brakes again. Seems to be something coming loose. Sarge tightened up where ever possible. Weve got an understanding about a couple of issues and Ill speak with him directly in the future if needed. The woman at the front desk is my only issue anymore. She was rude as hell last time. This time she was even worse and even tried to demand I take down this review. Im owed an apology from her. When I get it, well see. Until then, thus review stands. If it werent for Sarge, those would now be a 1 star review.)$2500 and this is what I get?! Been back twice to have work redone. Including for replacement of a suspension bolt that was too small. Brake work seemed half-assed. I had indicated to them initially that I believe there was a problem with the transmission and the pulley tensioner additionally. Those points have been completely ignored. Both problems exist to this day it will have to be dwelt with elsewhere. I get treated like an annoyance when Ive had to call them to repair the repairs.(Except for Sarge) Not recommended........

I had an issue with my pick-ups front suspension. It is really hard to find a place that will work on my truck. One shop offered 14 hours to do the work for just over $3000. They took it in and said it would take roughly four hours at about $1700 it took them 2.5 hours and I was back on the road. Wonderful service will definitely be calling them back for more service.

Went there 4 months ago for a free estimate and when I picked my car up they wrongly charged me 154.00! And told me that my headgaskets were bad and said it’s over $4000 to fix. I didn’t like the lack of honesty and fully didn’t trust how he treated me so I went somewhere else for a second opinion on the headgaskets. The new auto shop was absolutely disgusted that Jim’s Auto would tell me my headgaskets needed redone! Fast forward to four months later and my headgaskets are still the same and never had to be repaired. They are liars and theives!

I went in with a frozen up break caliper. I need my car for work, and needed it repaired as quickly as possible, they got it in put on the new breaks and the caliper and got me back on the road in about a hour and a half. Liz the office Manger was a delight to work with as was Sarge, the mechanic who worked on my car. The price was comparable to other shops, so all in all a very good experience. I highly suggest using Big Jims.

We have a Nissan, Honda and an older VW all of which we get serviced by Jims. I feel we get far better and more knowledgable work done than from the dealers. I was pleased to find a shop I can trust and from which we get prompt service.

Sarge is who my mechanic was. Hes very helpful, friendly, & knowledgeable. I had a problem with it after hey worked on it, he told me to bring it by first thing the next morning and he fixed it for me within 20 minutes.

Had Jims shop give me a quote for replacing the rear shocks on my F150. Fortunately for me I called around to get different estimates. Big Jims was about $600 higher then everyone else.

Recently I had my car serviced and when I came back to pick it up I noticed a horrible smoky smell coming from the interior of my car. Felt like I was in a casino for an entire day. I am allergic to cigarette smoke and had to leave the windows down and febreze it later that night. Will never go back there and will not recommend this place to any of my friends and family.

When I called for the initial pricing, I was quoted services only totaling to $257. However after services were completed, they charged and additional $70. When I attempted to dispute the charges, he advised me that he told me about these charges. He did not. I wrote everything down, prices for parts, labor, etc. When I disputed the amount, he stuttered and reeled back. I have filed a BBB complaint, and I will be plastering the bad service all over the internet. Horrible place to go.

I recently had a send and receive hose from my 2003 VW Passat wagon that went bad. It was peeing out coolant at a crazy rate. I was 3 hours away from home, and was referred here by another mechanic in Cedar Rapids.They told me they would have to open the turbo, replace a gasket, and a whole lot of other stuff, with the cheapest option being $2,800, with a 4 day wait for parts and labor. Then they told me I might as well get my timing belt replaced on top of that. I paid the same amount for the car in the first place.Thankfully, I called my mechanic in Byron, MN who is a VW wizard and he just laughed. He said to get it towed to Rochester if need be as a $400 towing fee would be cheaper with his costs than what they were charging.Long story short: I was able to limp the car home without a tow, and my mechanic fixed it two days later for a grand total of $384 including parts. He only charged me 1/2 the labor being a friend, but even so, a worst case scenario he would have done it for $800 with labor at $100/hr. Thats still $2,000 cheaper than Big Jims estimate. I dont know enough about cars and Cedar Rapids mechanics to say definitively that they were or were not trying to take advantage of me. I do know that what they quoted me $2,800 for I was able to get for far, far cheaper by simply going somewhere else.On the upside, they topped off my coolant and gave me some advice about how to limp it home, and Jim was generally cordial. But over all, I would never take a car there again.

BIg Jim ripped me off.. His mechanic Sarge is a very good mechanic.. and very good to his word.. I went to Big Jims simply because Sarge is the premier volkswagon expert in town.Sarge performed some tests on my car and wracked up a $400 bill for his work.. When I came to pay the bill, Big Jim charged me a bill of $960.. The front desk woman who was very friendly handed me the bill... I asked to talk to Jim and Jim ducked me.. I paid the bill as the front desk was about to close.. I tried to call JIm regarding the high mark up on the bill.. he refused to take my calls.I finally waited until the front desk girl had left to call and spoke to Jim.. He stated he was guaging me for actions that he deemed he did not like 15 years prior. eventually, he agreed to take $200 off the bill.JIm will gauge you.. His mechanics are good, but he will over charge you without telling you.. and then try to duck you.. You would find much better quality service and pricing up the street.
