Im torn on the star rating here, i would give the first experience 0 stars, and the final 5. TLDR terrible experience saved by the best outcome. Ive been using HR block for the last 3 years with my duplex in Groton, CT, making sure that everything was recorded correctly. It had always been a great experience, until this year. In 2020 we sold the duplex and made a gain on the property. Everything we had prepared for in terms of taxes pointed to us not having to pay capital gains on our primary residence portion of our duplex. We lived there for 4 years and sold it because my fiance got an amazing job in Bristol. All of that lined up with the benefits we should have received from the tax payer relief act of 1997. But the rep didnt see it that way, and said I should be happy that I made the money that we did. With my initial return she figured that I owed the Fed an additional $6500 on top of the $10K that I had paid in my taxes through out the year, and owed CT an additional $4000 on top of what i paid through out the year, so all in all I owed an additional $10,500. This was submitted, and I was absolutely disgusted. I should have know better to submit it, but Im not a tax professional and I took her for her word, since thats what she gets paid to do. Luckily I personally called another HR block, which was not recommended by anyone, to take a second look, and resolved the issue. W. Coley EA saved my tax return. I would give him 1000 stars for the effort he put into reading through the documents, finding the errors and saving me about $9000. I hate to bash HR Block, but I guess just be careful who you trust with your money, and look for the EA (enrolled agent) at the end of a signature or business card even if they are a hired tax professional working for an establishment like HRB. Thanks again Will!

The woman who did my taxes had a bad attitude and faught with me about my taxes after she said she had me leave my taxes there so she could show a supervisor. When I came back she continued with her bad attitude and didnt show the supervisor it until I had to argue with her again. The supervisor showed her she was wrong and she still had a bad attitude.

They failed to process my return and only after 2 phone calls and 20 days did they finally admitt their error and process it. NO refund or anything even offered.

Probably the worst place to do taxes . they messed up, and i had to do half the work a week later when im getting notices in the mail and i get charged almost $400 from them and i still have to do half their work!... They make it very noticeable that they dont really like their job. They have no idea what i was talking about when i was trying to ask them why am i getting letters in the mail saying i pretty much need to send in everything that H&Rblock was suppose to do.. Very disappointed. What a waste of time and money. Would of just went on TurboTax if i knew i had to do half their work and still get charged almost 400 bucks...

Quick, easy, and pain-free are the adjectives Id use to describe my experience with H&R Block.After doing my own taxes for years (TaxAct), I decided that since I was married & had multiple incomes Id go see an expert. Little did I know the level of service Id be receiving was far above the expert level.I went on H&R Blocks website and set up an appointment for 10:30 the next morning with Lewis Hutchins. I chose him over all the other tax experts because he had 19 years experience, and also had a pleasant appearance. This is not to say the others dont, but there was something about Lewis that drew me to him.Upon entering the building with my wife, we were warmly greeted by the receptionist. She looked me up, and asked us to be seated. She then offered to make us coffee - which is a HUGE plus for me.Less than a minute later, Mr. Hutchins came to the front, warmly shook our hands, and introduced himself to us. We follow him back to his cubicle and got to work.The whole process was SO quick, and SO easy. Doing my own taxes (even with TaxAct) has always been a multiple-hour affair. We were out of H&R Block in under an hour. Both my wife & myself were VERY pleased with the refund we received and the courtesy, friendliness, and professionalism of not just Lewis but the entire H&R Block staff. We walked out happy.We will be going back to Lewis every year from now on.Thanks for a great experience!UPDATE: Have gone to Lewis successively for the past 3 years now, and the service is the same as mentioned above - every time.
