Communication was horrible. My partner and I dropped off our deck to get repaired, we drove from Houston to here because of the reviews and wanted to go somewhere that specializes in tape decks. When we dropped it off the employee told us he would call us with an estimate but didn’t give us a time frame. We called later that day to be told it would take a week to get a diagnostic. A week passed and no call. We called 2 weeks after dropping the player off to be told they couldn’t find the issue and that it was something else wrong on our part. We re-explained the issue to a tech and he said he would play the deck all day, see if the problem presented itself and call us back either that Friday, or the Monday following. Never got another call. Drove out there to pick the player back up, called and got no answer. Thankfully the tech that came out was able to give me the player, saying that the other employees had left and that he would try his best to find my deck because he didn’t know how to use their computer system. All in all a terrible experience. I do not recommend coming here.
Staff went above and beyond setting up my current system. Even offered to drive 1.5hrs to my home in San Antonio to assist with install.Gear they have serviced for me:Pioneer CT-F9191 Tape DeckAKAI AA1150 ReceiverHarmon/Kardon T25 TurntableBoston Acoustics A70 SpeakersExcellent service and will not trust my gear to any other shop.
My 70s receiver sounds awesome!I took it in because the left channel kept cutting in and out and the tuner needed to be restrung. They told me I needed to have it thoroughly cleaned as well. I didnt even realize how clogged everything was until I plugged in it after getting it back. It is tear-inducing how clear the audio is, even NPR is crystal now.My only piece of advice is be proactive and ask what the turnaround is. Sometimes they have a wait or a backlog of work and may forget to mention how long it will take to get your stuff back. Super nice if you just call and ask yourself though.
My father brought his cd/cassette stereo unit to fix the cassette player and paid $30 to get it reviewed then gave an estimate of $250 to fix but it did not get fully fixed and even made the problem worse. And he feels conned. They would not even give him a discount for fixing his stereo. He advises not to go here.
Awesome job on my turntable. They replaced a damaged RCA cable and did a full calibration. Never sounded so good!
Great guys who know their stuff. They fixed and cleaned my late-70s Kenwood Integrated Amplifier right up, and it works like its new!
Very competitive pricing, mine has to go back for same concern. Jury will is out on pricing for that one. They are very accommodating though!UPDATE: got my Receiver back, so far so good. They did not charge me for the comeback.Update: got the receiver back still acting up, Ty was very helpful, and performed another diagnostic and small repair at no cost! I will do business with them again.
I had a good experience with this place. I received a quote for the work I requested just a couple days after dropping off the item. They even suggested a cheaper alternative to what I requested. When that didn’t work out, they went ahead with the original work and fixed the problem perfectly. Whole process only took a little over a week. Pretty sure that long string of one star reviews are all from one person that made a bunch of different accounts. Ignore them, those kind of people usually have something wrong with them
Tapehead is the best electronics repair shop in the state of Texas. These guys have experience, taste, and professional standards for service. Everyone I know takes their gear here for tuneups or repairs. Reliable and timely. Highly recommended
Nice little shop with a friendly Austin vibe. Repaired my stereo amplifier for a reasonable price. Happy with their service, would go back to them if needed.
I had a great experience with Tapehead. Fixed my Bryston 4b good as new at a very fair price. It sounds better than ever. Ill be taking all my gear here for repairs in the future. Highly recommended.
Super knowledgeable, consultative staff with whom Ive entrusted several pieces, including guitar amps (which is a little out of their wheelhouse, but they managed to do better work on it and faster than any guitar shop in town). Theyre friendly, responsive and resourceful. Id send you here first.
I heard about Tapehead through the audiophile grapevine. My speaker problem was diagnosed as a simple one. The faulty parts were replaced and the speakers are now as good as new. The job took 3 weeks but I was not in a hurry. The repair price was reasonable. Happy to support a local business. Plus, you are helping reduce landfill by repairing your consumer goods instead of just throwing them out and buying the latest model.
I have had a number of repairs done by the fine folks at Tapehead.. always with grade A results. As an Austin, Texas based studio owner / operator, I have a plethora of recording equipment, including tape machines and tape delays. I can always count on Tapehead to keep things running tip top. Thanks Tapehead Electronics! Keep up the good work!!
They cleaned my vintage integrated amplifier for a reasonable price. It sounds amazing now. These folks do great work.
Drew was great! They exceeded my expectations. I’ll definitely take any future business here!
A lil over priced and the owner or the head tech I talked with was pretty rude. They fixed the machine but 8 months later the tape is slipping when first starting play back so not a quality repair, especially for the price. 2.5 stars.
Tapehead is an amazing electronics repair business. These guys have a massive knowledge, talent and love of electronics repair and restoration. Their prices are great, you’ll get excellent workmanship and they’ll get your stuff back quickly. Even the bright, orderly appearance of the store made me confident that they would do great work. I can’t recommend them enough. UPDATE: I just bought a tape deck that was in bad shape. I took it to Tapehead and, as expected, its perfect. They do a great job quickly for a great price and theyre nice, friendly people!
These guys are absolutely great. They are engineers. I have had them fix vintage receivers, reel to reel tape decks, cassette decks, turntables...and when they couldnt fix my BOSE 901s, they gave me a reference to a great guy (Wes) who did a fantastic job. Do the math. If they are getting great reviews from many....and all of a sudden in the same time frame...they get a bunch of bad reviews, it is very likely all those bad review are probably from one person and his friends who are trying to hijack Tapehead because of a personal vendetta. For me, they are the way to go for vintage electronics repair.
Im pretty suspicious of stereo and camera people in general, I think you know what Im talking about. These guys are Aces! I wanted to talk to them for a bit and feel them out before I left my equipment. Both incredible experts and easy going conversationalists. My receiver was past my skill set and they brought it back to new condition for a very reasonable price. I will be bringing some more vintage items to them. They are the best I have ever found and Ive been in a lot of repair shops. Drop off your equipment in confidence!
Every piece of hi-fi equipment I own has been serviced by tapehead - and it all gets used daily without issue. The staff is friendly, fair, and knowledgeable; every step of the repair is clearly communicated to the customer; and they obviously care deeply about the quality of their work. Highly recommended.
Knowledgeable staff that work on an array of vintage electronic equipment. Had one repair done here. Dropped off my equipment (turntable), they gave me my repair quote, and I agreed to the amount. Some time went by, they called me and told me it would cost more to fix it than we had agreed on. (never had this happen before). I agreed to the higher amount, as long as it wouldnt be any higher. Two weeks later, I picked up my table. Three weeks after, my table stopped working. Called, and they stated that I would have to pay to have it repaired again. No thank you. Now it sits collecting dust. Wish I would have gone with somewhere what warrantied there work. You live and you learn I guess. Could have bought a new table, for what I paid for in repairs....
Please let me start by saying that all the recent false reviews for this electronic repair store are unjustified. The owner has been patiently dealing with this customer, who requested his social media followers to give a 1 star review without giving the full story of what really happened between them. The owner has been very kind/open minded and willing to work with this difficult customer. I witnessed this customer (my son) not being kind or respectful to him at all. These false reviews/accusations are simply unwarranted and should be removed. This place of business doesnt deserve this.
I was very pleased with Tapehead Electronics service. Dropped off my 37-year-old Marantz receiver and they had it up and running in just over a week. Sounds as good as new!
Absolutely no nonsense professional people. Very good work for a reasonable price. I will go back to them readily.
Great repair (amp, cassette player), very happy with work and price!
Excellent service and communication. Unit returned promptly. Highly recommend.
Great service at a fair price on my turntable adjustments. Recommended.
Awesome, awesome establishment. The repair guys were very knowledgeable and the price was good. They cleaned and repaired my 8-track player and i couldnt be happier
Ive never needed their services personally, but Im in the computer repair field and occasionally people come to me for things I know nothing about, like audio equipment. When applicable, I refer them to Tapehead, and what my customers tell me about them, as well as my personal/professional interactions, gives me complete confidence in their abilities and their work ethic.
I brought my early 70s Yamaha receiver to these guys and they made it sound new. Good communication and quick turn-around. Highly recommended.
Ive had Tapehead work on several pieces of gear over the last 2 years, including two Marantz receivers, a Sansui AU-9500 integrated amp, and a Thorens TD-125 turntable. I honestly cant say enough good things about the quality of the work they do and the knowledge they bring to the table. Every piece came back cleaned up and working flawlessly. The guys that run this shop are truly honest, friendly and professional - a rare combination in the electronics repair field! I expect Tapehead to be my go-to repair shop for many years to come.
Over the years, I’ve had equipment repaired at Tapehead ranging from my vintage Pioneer turntable, to various pieces of vintage (and sometimes obscure) pro audio equipment including the complete restoration of a Tascam 388 8-track 1/4” tape machine back to perfect working order, repair of a vintage DBX 165 compressor, and even a 1960s Teisco Combo Organ. All work was done at a great price, completed on time (or early), with excellent communication from start to finish. This is a gem of a business in a city that greatly needs these types of services, and Austin is lucky to have them.
The guys at Tapehead are honest, fair, knowledgeable, and thorough. Cant say Ive had a better experience at any other shop. 10/10 would strongly recommend.
Drew is the only tech I allow to service my Nakamichi Dragon and Teac X-1000R.PRICE is ALWAYS FAIR AND EXPLAINED PRIOR TO REPAIR.I sold a Nakamichi tapedeck on EBAY by stating all work was performed by Drew at Tapehead Electronics, in Austin, TX.
Terrific job...these guys! Iam listening to my vintage stereo now..sounds amazing! I would recommend them to anyone. I have some more equipment for them to tune up...cant wait.
Had a 9 year old tower speaker which had a binding post snap off, Id tried to fix the problem myself - to only make it worse when I inadvertently pulled a component and trace off the PCB circuit board. The Tapehead Electronics folks were able to repair both issues and get my speaker back to working flawlessly again, and for a fair price. Their turn around time for the repair was also less than a week. Great, quick and knowledgeable service!
Excellent quality and professional service. These guys are quick and offer a good value for repairs on older stereo equipment. 5/7 would use again.
Got a reel to reel and a cassette deck repaired at Tapehead. Brought both back to life and couldnt be happier! Recommended!!!!
Ive had a broken record player for a good 20 years that no one in Austin was able to fix, and I asked everyone in town! When I contacted TH and they assured me that they should be able to fix it for me, I had my doubts at first. However, they were all put to shame when I received a call 4 hours after dropping it off, claiming the issue was actually a very simple fix and that it would be fixed and ready first thing the next morning (sure enough it was). Now Im sure your experience might vary depending on the job and the problems to address, but as for me, I had a fabulous experience with the best service I could ask for! I highly recommend these guys for any and all of your vintage audio needs
Good guysdone like seven transactions; never had an issue
I took in a 1978 Pioneer CT F 1000 cassette player to be fixed. I was pleasantly surprised that their prices were reasonable and they had it ready before the time they told me it would be. The atmosphere in the space is nice and clean. The guys were top notch friendly and service minded. I would recommend them to my friends!
EXCELLENT work done quickly and professionally! These guys seem super-organized and knowledgeable. McIntosh integrated amp sounding AMAZING now! 3 thumbs up.....
Just today (11/16/19) i was at an audio store in SA... someone overheard me mentioning to the guy i was buying speaker cable from that i had an old marantz amp... he came up to me: hey, if you ever need your gear worked on i know a place in austin thats really great.... tapehead, right?... yeah, have you been there? [he had recently moved here from ATX]tapehead electronics is fantastic... everything... theyre courteous, attentive, communicative, knowledgeable, and honest... their rates are surprisingly reasonable... everything ive had worked on there has been taken care of beyond my satisfaction... quality work... quality people... give them a try... you wont be disappointed
They helped me repair a Nakamichi RX-505 with alignment issues. The price was more than fair and the turnaround time was very quick. Thanks again!
These guys do great work at a fair price!
Very unfriendly staff. Staff is in no way concerned about customer service, horrible experience. Just buy your stuff somewhere else it’s not worth it!!
Awesome shop! Knowledgable and very friendly. Youll find yourself drooling over their repair queue! I had a tape deck repaired with them, and old Kenwood top loader from the 70s. They did a superb job. They were honest up front, checked in with estimates, and waiting for the go ahead on the repair. Great communication overall! Thanks again!
Brought my Otari MX 5050 BII2 reel to reel tape deck in on a Monday for a head alignment and got it back the same week. The tape deck plays better than ever now thanks to their professional tech who performed the service. Would happily use them again. Ty and Drew are the best! Thanks!
I had a great, attentive, trustful, experiece. Thanks,Heather
My beloved Carver M 1.5t amp died and I took it into Tapehead. They told me that they had a 6 to 8 week backlog, which I read as a good sign because that indicated to me that they do good work and people are willing to wait. The Carver is probably about 30+ years old and the caps had gone out. After the replacement of 6 caps, I got it back, better than new, in about 5 weeks. Man, I cant believe how it good it performs and sounds for less than $200 in parts and labor. I could not even get near a new amp, which performs like the Carver, for $200.So, if you have vintage equipment, and the thought of losing it to the wear and tear of time and abuse, give Tapehead a call and see if they can bring your baby back to life.
Tapehead is easily the best stereo repair shop in town. Fast, fair, and knowledgeable, theyve worked on my vintage Marantz receiver and speakers, and have fixed my dads turntable; theyre the only shop I trust with my audio gear.
Got my Sansui receiver repaired here a while back. It had another problem, but they honored it with the warranty. Stand up service!
The staff was so disrespectful and is not welcoming at all! DONT COME HERE! YOU WILL NOT FEEL WELCOMED AT ALL! STAFF IS TERRIBLE!
The staff was very disrespectful and rude! They were all yelling and shouting inappropriately. It was not welcoming and seemed skeptical! I do not recommend!!!
Great service and quick turnaround! My receiver and turntable look and sound better than ever.
These guys did a great job repairing my vintage Tascam 224. Highly recommended!
Great honest service! Our Sony CDP-CX255 CD player was not working after it had been moved a lot during our home remodeling project. Tapehead Electronics said they would charge $30.00 to assess what needed to be done to repair the unit. I was pleasantly surprised that they repaired the units jam for only $2.48 additional cost; i.e., sales tax on the original $30.00 that we had paid!
They do great work for a great price on vintage electronics
When I was there they are great but lately they have been very mad and last time I was there the man at the front where cussing and being very rude to two kids this was not ok and they didn’t do anything that I had seen I will never go back there now
Fast, courteous, and very reasonable. they explained everythin before.
Nice guys can fix anything.
I dont know what they did to my stereo but the problem is worse than ever.
Extremely disrespectful, I was given a broke mic when I asked for my money back I was cussed out repeatedly
Great guys can fix anything
Just very disrespectful and the employees do not make you feel welcome in the store they will cuss you out for no reason
The staff are incredibly rude and disrespectful.
Bought a vintage stereo amp that turned out to be a lemon, but now its like-new thanks to Tapehead Electronics.
Horrible staff VERY UNFRIENDLY
Terrible staff
They suck
