This apartment I looked at was nice. But It was haRd to getting ahold of the guy that was in charge of the rental. When he did get back to me he told me that he did a credit check on me and I had no credit score and if I wanted the apartment that he needed an additional 600 on top of the security. . Is this guy mad everyone has a credit score not sure what hes talking about, but after reading the reviews Im glad I didnt get it.. someone was wathing over me thank goodness....
We were looking at renting a 3bedroom property on the east side back with a lease that would have begun September 2017. We were bewildered at how a 3bedroom in the condition and location it was was $1300/month with reports of the rent having been dropped to even lower than that. We set up a meeting to review the place, and everything was phenominal as anticipated, we were still amazed at how it could be such a low price. Thought the gentleman was helpful but at the same time putting a significant amount of effort into giving us the best impression of the place possible.Following the meeting I decided to google the gentlemans name to see his reviews as a landlord, and this was when my thoughts on the unit turned upside down. He also practices law, and has a history of scamming his tenants, adding additional fees, and putting killer clauses within his lease agreements validating his ability to charge extra fees at an excessive rate. Came to the understanding that in order to get an apartment to sell, he knocked the price down and hoped that would outweigh his negative publicity. At the time there were only a few poor reviews shown here on google maps, with many, many more by people that I found online. Two years later there are a large handful of poor reviews and by the looks of it the state of WI took him to court, and won the legal battle.DO NOT RENT FROM THIS GENTLEMAN!! I was so worked up over the information I found that two years after I called him to politely terminate my interest in the property, I still remember his name and was able to locate this page.
Honest review:I cant believe Im giving this place 3 stars but I am. My wife and I rented from this man for two and a half years. Not the worst experience I have had but close.Dealing with this man is literally the worst part of the whole thing. His demeanor and interactions with us were the worst. I can not even begin to tell you how awful they were. All that said, he did his job and did it fairly well. The apartments were clean and well maintained. He fixed what was broken and fixed it fast. He sends out a letter letting you know how awesome of a landlord he is for doing his job and how much expense he went through just for you.If you are responsible, pay rent on time, respect the property, and respect the man (the hardest one), I would recommend this place IF you know what you are getting in to.Here are a few tips to make sure you come out with a good experience.Call him quarterly to check up and make sure he has not tallied up any late fees or paper(10¢ a sheet) charges. Specifically ask for any fees you have accumulated and be polite and direct.Keep his property in good repair, if it breaks due to normal wear and tear he will fix it and pay for it. If it breaks because you were mistreating the property, he will probably charge you.If you are responsible for lawn or snow removal (or any other small easy task) as designated in your 150 page rental agreement, do it and check up to see if he fined you for not doing a good job. When moving out, clean the apartment as he explicitly tells you in the move out agreement. The products are inexpensive and work well, and if you dont he will charge you. You got the apartment clean, leave it clean.Pro tip: wear new white socks on the move in, save them in a save place with the lease, appliance user manuals, original keys, and any paperwork he gives or sends you, even the original dollar bill he gives with the lease. Also wear a second pair of new socks on your move out inspection. We did as I said above, our experience was good. We got all of our deposit back less our portion of the quarterly water bill.I hate talking bad about someone but it is worth saying again; dealing with this guy is the worst and will give most people ulcers. If you can handle dealing with toxic people, play by his rules, and are responsible, I would recommend this place.
I set up a showing fro a couple who are disable. From the beginning of the call i explain there disability. he insisted in order to view his apartment they must take off there shoes or really clean their shoes with a towel. as he continue to down talk to me on the phone. i decided that this man has a mental disability. He also sounded pretty raises.
I found a very detailed and specific add for a beautiful 2 bedroom on Craigslist (Mount Prospect on Mkes east side) It took a 3rd voicemail to receive a call back. After no longer than 15 minutes of discussing what was expected of me at the showing,I was able to schedule one for the next day. I called to confirm that morning but received no answer from the either of the numbers he gave me or the text I sent. He was waiting in the lobby when I got there and took my 3 year old son and I up to the 3rd floor unit. He instructed us to remove our shoes because he was mopping, but insisted that he would keep his on FOR SAFETY REASONS. There was water everywhere. Our socks were immediately soaked upon walking in to view the unit. He was incredibly condescending and sarcastic and didn’t answer my questions until I asked them in a very specific way. While the unit was beautiful and priced well, I decided that I will not be moving forward with the rental process. His growing list of requirements made me feel as though he didn’t want to rent to me. He implied that I wouldn’t take good care of the unit and he would “undoubtedly charge me a higher rent and deposit”. While I initially appreciated the detail oriented nature of the add and rental process, I believe this man has some serious mental health issues.
I lived there 3 and a half years. He wasnt very good at fixing anything properly. I got charged for everything he fixed and then some when I left. Terrible landlord. It was a learning experience. Becareful who you rent from. First impression mean a lot.
Would leave 0 stars if possible. Worst landlord/rental experience of my life. He will be rude and condescending to you and basically steal your security deposit. If you know you are a good tenant and do your best at following his winding maze of crazy requirements, it doesnt matter because he will still screw you in the end.
I am writing this review based on a showing only, I never rented from Mr. OConnor. After contacting him over the phone, which was a 14 minute call itself, I arrived for my showing with my mom and my sister. The apartment itself was gorgeous. But the condescending nature of this man was appalling. He back talked my mother twice. Wouldnt you think you should placate to the mother so she is in your corner? After the showing Im glad I reS the reviews because it reaffirmed the gut feeling that I would not want to rent from this man for a year or more.
I would not recommend anyone rent from this manager. Anytime you have to complete a 35 page lease agreement you know he is up to something. If not for the location I would have not rented. Moved out recently and was nickled and dimed until all my $1200 deposit was gone. I do not recommend renting from this manager.
One of the worst humans I have ever met. Avoid at all cost. The state of WI just took him to court and he lost.
Geee after reading the reviews, no wonder the for rent sign has been there FOREVER. Scratch this off my list.
