I just can’t recommend this vet. We brought two cats here and they were siblings. Four years ago, due to liver failure, we put her brother to sleep and they botched it — he was facing away from us and as soon they sedated him, his heart stopped. And we didn’t have a chance to say good bye. This time, her sister was 19 years old and in rapid declining health. She absolutely hated vets so we didn’t bring her in. Would not take pills or even mixed in food. She wasn’t stupid. And because it was some time since we last brought her in, they said they had to do quality of life exam and kept asking me - rudely and coldly - implying we could have done this or that. I was floored. We struggled with the decision but we knew it was time. And the vet made me feel horrible and she did nothing to assure me. Very judgmental. She reluctantly admitted there was a lot of issues with her at end. They went ahead and put her to sleep. To add insult to the injury, I was told it would be $170 on phone. No. The final bill was $420. Just be warned. And I honestly do not know why I returned to this vet again. I will not again.
The staff is so kind to my Maizy - always patient and gentle with her. Dr. Appleby is great! He was thorough, never made me feel rushed, explained options and costs for my dog’s treatment and generally has a stellar bedside manner for animals and their humans. He is also very knowledgeable about Rx and specific conditions in my breed of dog. I recommended him to my friends seeking a vet. Thanks to the rest of staff, as well, who helped with the vaccines and payment. Everything went very smoothly.
After years of supporting this office, I am sad to say that I would no longer recommend. While the support staff at Union are great, it has been a night and day experience working with a vet at another location. Empathy, patience, conversations, and authentic care are things I did not realize were missing until I switched. And cheaper!
We have been taking our dog for nearly one year (dog is less than one year old). She finally had a medical emergency that required immediate treatment and we were told there was no way to see her until the afternoon of the next day. Were seeking a new veterinarian in the area who is willing to see urgent patients quickly. I recommend you find a different veterinary clinic in the case that your pet has an urgent issue since Union Vet cannot be relied on.
Today was my first visit after moving into DC. I was surprised at some of the reviews about the front desk crew as I thought they were extraordinarily polite and accommodating. The clinic is very efficient and the doctor is knowledgeable and they have a large staff to get you in and out. My situation is a bit complicated but the Vet was very helpful. I will return a few more times and see how it goes. So far, so good!
It is so hard to find a vet you can trust which we all know. One of the biggest gripe everyone ALWAYS has with vets are their costs. No matter where you go, every single place is expensive! We know this! I truly don’t think it’s fair to expect anywhere in DC in general to be anything close to affordable BUT quality is the concern here. I have a six pound chiweenie mix who has been seen here multiple times and I have yet to have a bad experience. The staff is kind, they always answer my questions and they truly listen to me when I have concerns. I brought my dog in for a dental cleaning and his teeth look outstanding. I have called them who knows how many times with food questions, every time my dog pukes and so much more. They always work with you to get your dog seen ASAP if needed. I think they are great - yes spendy but overall great.
I chose this clinic during the pandemic as a referral from another clinic who was overcrowded. I am very happy with the all staff I have interacted with since last year. This is not my first pet so I have a great deal of experience with veterinary clinics. Union Vet, is great in my book.
Getting a vet appointment anywhere in this city is a nightmare and Union Vet Clinic is no different. When you are able to land an appointment the staff is courteous and friendly and very attentive to my two cats. Vet care is expensive but the prices at Union Vet are within the same range Ive paid living in other cities. I cannot remember the name of the doctor my cat saw most recently but she was easy to talk with and clearly laid out potential issues and recommended solutions for my cat and left it up to me to decide. I did not feel I was getting nickled and dimed as some others have said because I had the option to say yes or no to any of the exams, procedures, or tests.
I love Union Vet. They have been consistently great for several years. They are very helpful and professio al. They dont perform unnecessary exams and tests. They listen intently to get to the bottom of the issue with my fur baby. I highly recommend them and their services.
This place is amazing. I have a cat that is constantly sick and I know I can trust union vet with his care. They are def a very busy practice but I always feel like they go above and beyond to try and fit me into their schedule. I truly appreciate how the vets go over all of the options and let me decide. I appreciate the transparency and know that I can rely on them. I tell all my pet parent friends to take their pets there!
Love bringing my dog and cat here. There is never a wait and they are always willing to answer questions and get on the phone in between appointments. Would highly recommend!!!
CAUTION: Union Veterinary Clinic is a FACTORY, run by DRONES who treat our pets like WIDGETS.Took my dog in for ear surgery (hematoma). He left with pneumonia. I returned to UVC the next day, and it turned into a train wreck. Try as I might to get a consult, I was denied. I phoned and left messages for a doc to return my call. Nothing happened for five days, and then no one - docs or staff - would take responsibility. There was a 36-hour period when I seriously thought my dog might die. Fortunately, he’s recovering, no thanks to UVC.Run, don’t walk, from UVC!
My little chihuahua is no angel, but the staff there always treat him like he is. I always get full information and a range of options for care from the vets there. I still take Poppi there even though I’m not in that neighborhood anymore
Brought my puppy in for his first vaccines. The vet called me to tell me everything went find other than he had a bowel movement in the exam room while left alone and dragged his leash through it - but they would wash the leash and thats why it was wet.Why was an 8 week old puppy left alone in the exam room?I was then called to pay, and when the tech brought the puppy out they handed me my leash in a plastic bag, unwashed, and covered in feces. Sooo, I had to carry my dog home from there.Great first experience.
I appreciate that they take their time at a visit and are very through.
I had a good experience with Union Vet recently when they helped me schedule an appointment for a kitten rescued from the street. The appointment was socially distanced due to covid, but it was very easy to drop off and the staff was friendly. The vet called me after the check up and was thorough and patient with my questions.
We were clients of this vet until we had a sudden life or death emergency with our dog. We live just a block away and could have been there in just a few seconds, the clinic was still scheduled to be open for another 30 minutes, but we were told that none of the doctors were seeing any other clients before the end of the shift and we were forced to seek care at an emergency clinic 30+ minutes away. It’s hard to believe that these doctors and staff could care all that much about their clients and pets if they are so willing to leave them to die in an emergency. It undid any goodwill that we had with the vet and our dog is lucky to be alive despite their carelessness.Update: upon raising this concern, the person we spoke with on the phone labeled us “entitled a**holes” for trying to get care for the dog. So that was nice.
I was late by 6 minutes for my cats vaccination. The doctor refused to see us. The front desk staff was amazed by that reaction from the doctor and was trying to fix this to no avail. Well, now my three pets are being served at the other clinic.UPDATE: Their response below shows that they dont care about the clients. I specifically mentioned that I was late by 6 minutes arriving at 5:16PM instead of 5:10PM and they mention the 10 minutes policy. When I arrived, I called the front desk and they asked me to wait outside (the usual procedure). They called me back at 5:20PM to tell me that they cannot accommodate me as I showed up 10 minutes late. I replied it is 5:20 right now, and Im standing here for a few minutes already. Then the person on the phone checked the time and got sympathetic, and tried to reason with the doctor.
Brought my 4mo old adopted kitten here. The techs were incredibly kind and proactive about getting her in, directing me where to park to drop her off. The vet was great to talk to on the phone and answered all my questions however I had to ask her to examine my kitten further because of an irritated patch of skin on her paw - if I didnt notice that, it would have gone unnoticed and untreated - for an initial appointment and eval I would have expected a bit more thorough of an examination. Otherwise, front desk staff was awesome sent me everything I asked for immediately and I will likely be returning.
We will never be returning to this clinic - I am so disappointed. Our dog was in a life/death situation and they turned us away because no more appointments were available. Our dog needed immediate vet care when we called them at 5:30 - we live 2 blocks away and said we will be there shortly. We were then informed even though the clinic remained open for 30 more minutes they would not let us bring her in and rudely informed us to take her to the animal hospital 45 minutes away in rush hour traffic. She was barely responsive at this point and these critical minutes matter in a life/death situation. You would think a neighborhood vet would actually care about animals and want to help a dying dog but this veterinary office instead opted to close their clinic on time rather than assist our sweet girl. Thankfully our dog is alive, but in no way, shape, or form thanks to this vet.
(Note for the practice, the last name my account is under is Garvey)We take four pets here and overall we are very satisfied. Two of the pets are older/chronically ill/high need and I find that I always get prompt responses when I have concerns and need follow up. Also, now that we are established clients, its easy to get medication refills or even new meds without a visit, etc.Im going to give 4 stars instead of 5 just because the clinic is small and a little hectic. They have a lot of clients and its just not quite the smooth, well-oiled machine somewhere like Friendship is. Ive had a few minor issues like my cat seeing the wrong doctor and getting an incorrect/incomplete evaluation (I always request my vet so I assume the scheduler misheard or made a mistake in scheduling) and being told my cat didnt need to take drugs prior to a visit when he actually did, but overall, I dont fault the clinic for these - mistakes happen and considering their patient volume and expansive schedule, I feel like the overall rate of efficiency is high.As far as their prices, its weird to me that a lot of people are complaining. Have they been to other vents in the DC area? When I moved up from Florida, I was SHOCKED at how high vet prices are here, but I find Union Vet to be on the lower end (WAY lower than friendship, where I used to take both my cats).I also dont particularly feel nickel and dimed, but I spend a lot of money in general there, so maybe its a different case for infrequent clients. I also understand because its in an expensive neighborhood and they do a lot of really convenient services like evening visits and drop off visits... thats worth a premium cost to me.The vet I see regularly for my cats always provides really detailed explanations and is always available to answer questions. I usually email and get a response back very quickly, but sometimes she calls me if its easier. Ive seen a few other vets there as well and find them equally great. One of them has helped a lot with an upcoming move to Alaska by doing research I probably should have done!Overall, I highly recommend Union Vet, and I recommend people who are seeking a new vet to consider them if they understand that the clinic definitely has a neighborhood clinic vibe and isnt a large, robust operation. Although, they seem to have added the cool Pet.Ly system and Im so excited about it!
My cat is dying of cancer (but I’m in Florida due to covid-19) and I needed to speak with my vet. I’ve been trying to get a response all week and have not been able to get my vet on the phone. Finally this morning, after crying to the person who answered the phone - I was told a vet would call me back. I waited the whole day by the phone but missed the call by about 15 seconds. There was no call back number, and there is no voicemail system. Now, my cat will just have to suffer until Monday.I’ve already taken my cat to the emergency vet, and really just needed her primary care vet to give me advice on how to keep her comfortable as she dies. You pay a premium with this vet, I do not know where the money goes - the facilities are not very nice, their communication systems are non-existent, and unless it’s 15 minutes after they open or 30 minutes before they close - they do not care about their patients.I was even in there one day to pick up medication a few minutes before they close and the person at the front desk complained to me because they had to answer calls coming in (but hinted that if the call had come in after closing they don’t have to).As I’ve been calling vets in Florida to try to get her into be seen - even though they’ve never met me or my cat, they care more about me than Union Vet ever has or will.I had friends warn me to not go to this vet because of the poor service - I wish I listened. I went because the location so convenient. Please don’t make the same mistake I made, it’s worth it for your pets to take them to another vet farther away, that will give you the attention you need in an emergency.Update: We had to put my sweet kitty down, still no call back from Union Vet
I brought my cat to this place because he was having tremors. I’m sure they didn’t give him the checkup that I paid for, in fact I don’t believe they even took him out of the pet carrier at all!
Union Vet Clinic front desk people lack common decency, courtesy, & compassion, with no training in dealing with health and emergency situations. My dog went in for a procedure to collect a urine sample directly from the bladder (by injecting a needle through the abdominal wall) to send to a lab for testing. My dog came out in so much pain that she couldnt move! Dr Lehmann misdiagnosed this for fainting & strongly recommended I bring my dog to Friendship Hospital for emergency treatment, possibly for heart condition. Almost $1500 later, my dog had no heart issues. In fact she had a strong heart for a six & a half year old. But what happened to the urine sample that caused my dog to freeze in pain? Oh, it was sent to the lab but due to human error the test wasnt done. Huh?? Really? Wasnt the order checked for fulfillment? You charged me $400, my dog went into shock from the painful traumatic experience, & the test wasnt done? My calls & emails to the office were not returned until 12 days later when I spoke with Dr Cohen, who concurred that the lab f**ked up! Drs Cohen & Gross then asked Do you want to bring your dog back to get another sample? HELL NO! OMG! To give this Clinic a one star review is giving it too much credit. If you have any love for your pets, I would not bring them to this over-priced & irresponsible place. Run the opposite direction! FAST!
I was so pleased with my experience. It was a hard time as I was having my cat put down. They handled everything so kindly and thoughtfully. Will definitely be using this Vet Clinic when I get my next pet.
Very bad experience with Union Vet. Vets unprofessional, unprepared, ask remedial questions and tried to vaccinate my cat with shots he had received a month earlier — that were listed in his medical record. Extremely poor bedside manner too. Will NEVER be back!
First impression are lasting rude people unprofessional I got that energy I would never entrusted. My dog with them bad energy!!! Stay away
This place is the best! You can really tell they love animals and are willing yo grt the extra mile. They always make sure I know my options and you can get appointments with very short notice.
Took my cat, Barry, here for the free wellness visit thats included with HRA adoptions and the staff was super friendly, Barry was comfortable and they were quick. They even took the time to mail me Barrys microchip tab that had fallen out of my papers. Well be using them as long as we live in DC.
Dr. Stenner diagnosed a lesion on my cats back that had been completely misdiagnosed at a different vet office, and she successfully treated him. It cost much less than the other vet office. That said, Union Vet isnt cheap, and it was a bit costly to treat our other cat, who is elderly. We would still go back there.
This is a great clinic. Everyone is really nice and you can tell that they really care about the animals. I love bringing my dog, Chloe, here. Im not sure how much she appreciates it, but such is life.
They are trying to sell you anything they can as long as they can make money of you. Overcharging-on basic vaccination !!! DO NOT GO HERE.
I went to Union Vet for about 7 years with my two male cats. They always insisted that both of them needed dental cleanings, which I was always wary of and didnt want to do. They finally convinced me that one of my cats really needed a cleaning so I decided to do it. Within 10 minutes of him being in surgery, my cat died. They told me that they did all of the necessary tests beforehand and thought he was healthy enough for the surgery. But then they supposedly took x-rays afterward (which I never saw) and found his heart was enlarged, which caused him to die. However, Id been going to this vet for years and no one had ever even hinted at a heart issue. In fact, he was given a clean bill of health (except his teeth) at every visit. I still feel so guilty for sending him here that day. Ive now changed vets and will never recommend Union.
WARNING: DO NOT GET ANY MEDICATIONS HERE! In general, Union Vet seems overpriced, but they have a “minimum dispensing fee” of $23 “intended to cover the cost of the medication, the bottle, the label, the technician’s time, the doctor’s time, etc.” and they “normally don’t” disclose this fee to clients because it’s “always tough” to keep clients informed of all of their policies and charges. So if your pet is prescribed a drug that only costs $3, they jack it up to $23 just because they can/want to. There is no such thing as “minimum dispensing fee” at human pharmacies, and if it was truly a fee to cover the quoted services above, then it would apply to ALL prescriptions they fill. Also, I think the doctor’s time is sufficiently covered in their nearly $80 exam fee. This is just their way of charging people more money to increase their profits. Apparently this type of fee is common in veterinary practice, but they are still 50% more than nearby Atlas Vet who charges $16.They also have a very disrespectful way of handling inquiries and complaints. They had no interest in keeping me as a client (readily offered to transfer records if I wasn’t happy) and accused me of a “threat and blackmail” because I said this type of non-disclosure may cause me to go elsewhere and I may post a review so clients know about this hidden fee if they won’t disclose it (I never specifically asked for a refund so not sure how I was threatening or blackmailing them).Overall, the services are only average and not worth the overpricing and disrespect you receive. If you do go here, definitely ask for a written prescription to fill elsewhere (CVS, Harris Teeter, online).
Union is great. I brought my dog for an emergency and they were able to see her immediately and diagnose the problem. She is doing well now and whenever we go back everyone is friendly and helpful.
I visited Union Vet a million times because my dog had stomach problems. It was my first time owning a dog and I wasn’t aware of dog allergies. We spent THOUSANDS on all kinds of tests and had all kinds of prescriptions. We ended up taking him to Canal Clinic and right off the bat they told us our the breed was known for allergies and it ended up being an easy fix. Wish someone at Union had thought of this...
I took my cat here on Friday after he had been marking at home. I always knew of Union Veterinary Clinic but had never tried it out. Im SO glad I did! I called them and they got me in within an hour. They were also having a senior cat package special so I received an $80 discount on numerous tests. We saw Dr. Mortola and I was very happy with the care my cat received. Dr. Mortola listened to all my concerns and gave my cat a very thorough exam and she made sure to explain everything in detail to me about the tests and the different things they look for when it comes to heart disease or thyroid issues, etc. Not only did she genuinely care about figuring out what was bothering my pet but she made sure to let me know if the tests came back with no results she would help me further with different approaches to the behavior. I was already completely satisfied with my experience with Union Veterinary Clinic and then today I was EVEN MORE impressed. I received a letter in the mail from them thanking me for trusting them with my pet and for being a patient etc.(keep in mind I was there only 3 days ago!) I think that just shows they care and really goes the extra mile. Im so sad Ill be moving soon and wont get to keep them as my Vet for the future.
As a new (but slightly nervous) pet owner, I have been consistently impressed with Union vets ability to calm my nerves and promptly respond to any of my questions. The service is always quick and even their over the phone consultations are enormously helpful. Definitely recommend them.
We have been taking our kitty here for seven years now both for routine stuff and emergencies. Dr. Gross and Dr. Lehmann are always able to fit us in when we call which is such a relief. Sometimes on weekends the lobby can be busy but it is still way better then driving across town to the emergency clinic.
Terrific caring staff. Never had an issue with them in years of treating multiple pets. Handled euthanizing our cat yesterday with skill and every consideration
If I could give this place a zero, I would. I own a state licensed daycare and boarding facility in Colorado. We have a very young puppy (less than 12 weeks old) booked to stay with us for two weeks. The owner called on Wednesday and said her new puppy had been diagnosed with a contagious respiratory infection & was being treated with antibiotics. The vet did NOT tell her how long to quarantine the dog. I called the vet. Twice. Both times, I got no information--first from the receptionist and second time, from the vet tech who said gee, there arent many notes about this and the vet will just have to call you back Thursday afternoon. The client was flying OUT to CO Thursday morning w/ no place to put the dog while here. The vet finally called on Friday morning, was extremely rude and flat out said I was wasting her time by asking her questions. I explained multiple times that I just needed to know how long the dog was on meds & when he would be cleared from quarantine to be around other dogs without putting them at risk of infection. At the end of the conversation, I told her I have never dealt with a more unprofessional or rude veterinarian and I used to work for one for 3 years. She told me I was wasting her time while she had real patients with real problems that needed to be treated. I told her she was unprofessional and I did not appreciate the way she was speaking to me or the lack of concern she was showing her client and a thirteen week old puppy. She hung up on me.If I live in Washington, DC, this would be the LAST place on earth I would take my dog, even in an emergency. Ive been in business 19 years and have never dealt with such an unprofessional, disorganized staff or such an uncaring vet.
Really like a couple of theirs docs. Its fantastically easy for those of us on the car-free diet. Desk staff is very nice of not very knowledgeable. Ive had to return twice for miscounted prescriptions, so that was frustrating.
Very caring about my pets, and about me and my price range. Super awesome staff who really love animals!
Took my dog in because I thought he might have a UTI or infection. I spent around 5 minutes with the vet but close to an hour waiting. After waiting for 30 mins, my dog and I were called back to see the vet. She answered all of my questions and was polite. Then a vet tech took my dog back to get x-rays while I sat in the waiting room. After around 20 mins of waiting I was called back to speak with the vet about the results. Got the results and was told to go back to the waiting room and someone would bring out my dog. Waited another 10 minutes, then finally someone brought out the pupper. $400 later, I was given allergy pills. Seems extremely over priced even for the DC area.
Fantastic Vet. They do a great job of taking care of our cat, flexible with appointments, vets and techs are very caring. I also appreciate they dont push procedures that may or may not be necessary, just in order to make a buck.
Ive been taking my pets here for years (large dogs and cats) and have consistently had excellent service. Their prices are on par for the DC area, but they are flexible; for example, if your pet just needs routine vaccines they can be seen by a tech and you dont have to pay for a full exam. The vet techs are super friendly and have handled my pets well. They have always taken my questions and concerns seriously and I feel comfortable speaking with anyone on staff. Also the facilities are very clean and I always see staff washing their hands, which you would think is a no-brainer but having gone to other clinics sometimes the hygiene is sub par.One of the reviewers mentioned they took stars off for a doctor indicating they werent sure they could perform complicated surgery, but I take this as a plus that they will honestly tell you if your pet needs to see a specialist. They have a large network of specialists they work with and can refer you to. The specialists weve been referred to over the years have also been great to work with, and my pets medical records have been transferred without issue between Union Vet and other service providers.
Lovely kind vets. They give thoughtful diagnosis and dont try to use your love for your pets to upsell you on treatments and tests (like other vets in this region).
Awesome, caring staff. Theres a reason theyve been The Hill vet for more than 20 years. Parking is a pain, however.
Dr. Katz provides lots of helpful info and taught me how to care for my pups sensitive ears.
They where supper friendly and professional. The vet was great and gentle with my nervous dog.
Service is OK, prices are outrageous and they nickel and dime you to death. I left my cat for boarding and they asked if I would like him to get his rabies booster while he was there, I agreed, assuming it would cost $25 or so like it does at the humane society or ASPCA. When I picked my cat up they had charged me $40 for the vaccine, $70 for a pre vaccine exam (my cat had been examined there twice this year already and another $25 for benadryl (benadryl!!) because a set of earlier vaccines (not rabies) had made him lethargic. I was shocked when I picked him up and got the bill. They did not warn me that an exam or any additional charges would be made. To make things worse, the vet finally called me two a week later to answer my questions and she was very rude to me and and completely unapologetic about her staff failing to disclose everything to me. It was this attitude that made up my mind to find vet services elsewhere.
Staff is rude and uncaringAlso, any interaction by phone is confusing, inconsistent and not helpful.I am goi g back to Dupont as it is worth the ride.
Love our vets. Dr Katz is great.
So nice, competent, and very efficient. Parking was terrible.
Dont Go there, if you value your animals life!!!!!!They accidentally killed my dog and overcharged me.
Super expensive.
Ive had nothing but great experiences at this vet.
Lovely staff.
Great staff!
Our kitty loves it
Friendly and fast
