PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT USE COQUI CAR RENTAL. It was the worst rental car experience I’ve ever had. The tan Jeep Wrangler we received had two flat tires. One of which had a complete failure due to rot on the sidewall. All of the equipment needed to change the tire was also not in the Jeep. If it wasn’t for two good samaritains would would have been stranded without service. We tried calling the business after getting to a location with a signal but received no call back. The other 3 tires also had rot on the tread and were bald. This business is going to get someone seriously injured one day due to the lack of maintenance they put into their vehicles. Unless you have a death wish please do not rent from Coqui Car rental.
Rented the 4 door hardtop jeep for 4 days while we were staying at Blue Horizon Botique. Jeep was in excellent condition. Renting a jeep on Vieques is necessary if you wish to see everything the island has to offer. Some of the roads are very narrow and in extremely poor condition and I had to put it in 4wd a couple times. They were able to meet me at the airport for pickup and allowed airport drop off as well. Was a little difficult communicating with Coqui by email but they do seem to respond well to text messages. I will definitely rent from them again the next time we stay in Vieques. Thanks for a great experience!
This is, by far, the worst rental car company I have dealt with. We rented a car from them for 3 days. When we picked the car up it had a belt noise. The woman said that the belt was replaces recently and it just needed to warm up. Which clearly demonstrates her lack of knowledge on cars. You do not need to be a car mechanic to know that the belts do not ‘warm up’. We decided to ignore her comment since we did not wanted to ruin our vacation that it was about to start. We also asked for a bigger car since one of our party members is tall. She immediately complained and told us “You get what you paid for”. This clearly shows that she has no interest in customer service and she only cares about being paid. Once more we decide to ignore her words and don’t let get it us. When we got it we noticed a couple of things one that the driver’s seat will not lock in position and two that the car’s license was expired. Upon starting to drive, we could hear a water noise as if there was water accumulated inside the car. We couldn’t find anything in the obvious areas. As time went by every time we got in the car we noticed a horrible stank of rotten. We decided to check the spare tire compartment and it was full of water. Signs that these people do not clean or maintain their vehicles. On day 2 we noticed that the car wouldn’t stop upon pressing the breaks. We checked to see if the car had brake fluid and it was empty. So we called the company to have them fixed the car. We arrived at their location, after calling, texting and emailing more than 25 times, only to encounter that the office was closed. We asked at the Subway next door and the Subway attendant was more helpful than this company was, since the Subway attendant knew the owner of the company she drove up to her house to find her. Sadly, the Subway clerk was not successful. After waiting for about 90 minutes we see the owner walk up the car parked next us, so we decide to ask her. When we informed her of the issue, her first response was that we were lying and that is impossible that the car is not breaking. We diced to show her and that’s when she informs us that it is not her problem because is her day off. So here we are with a car that the brakes are broken and the owner of the company decides that is not her problem. Upon insisting, she tells us that the ‘mechanic’ is coming to fix the car. We tell her that we are not interested in that and that we demand a new car. So when the ‘mechanic’ shows up she tells us that we are taking the car that the mechanic was driving. Let clear up that the mechanic is another company woman that had bought 2 bottles of brake fluid to put in the car. We take the other car which was even smaller that the original and in worse condition. Sice we didn’t want to keep waiting time in our vacation we decide to take the care and leave after all we only had to deal with it for a day.In summary if you want you vacations to be ruined by all means rent from this company, but if you value your life I recommend you find a different company to rent a car from. Attached are the pictures and videos of the conditions the cars we got from the company.
Host is very rude to customers.Guys if you are renting here, make sure to check the jeep condition tire pressure etc. roads are too rough in Vieques and also make sure to fill up gas while returning or else you gonna end up paining 40 dollars for 1/4th tank.I recommend not renting there are a lot of rentals around the island.
If you are in the market for booking a vehicle just to show up and not have any vehicles available... this is the spot for you. I booked a vehicle weeks in advance and was advised upon my arrival that they notified me via email the day of that there were no vehicles available. I received no such email. Horrible customer service and I cant rate the actual car rental considering I never got one. Would suggest not using this company.
Posting this review to help shed some light on this rental company. I rented from Coqui July 17th through the 26th with no issues. Was reserved for a Jeep Wrangler at a fair price compared to other rental companies on the island. When I reserved online the owner reached out requesting certain documents and explained why they were needed. Documents were sent in a timely manner which helped expedite the pick up of the vehicle. Now when you want to visit a piece of paradise like Vieques you also need to have realistic expectations. Half of the negative reviews here seem like they were written by entitled people, if you want a 2021 model pay 2021 prices at Avis. Come on people we always have options! 😏The Jeep was a 2015 model in decent condition. Were the tires a little low on air and worn down? Yes. But thats to be expected when half of the roads are full of pot holes from Mars and you off road quite a bit to visit the beautiful beaches. All in all would I rent from them again? Hell yes!And for the sake of your own sanity listen to the owner. She gives pretty good return instructions when you are picking up the vehicle and how to return the vehicle.Enjoy Vieques/my home for all its beauty and what it has to offer 😘.
The quality of the Jeep we got from Coqui car rental was easily the worst part of our trip to Vieques. We blew a tire on our first trip to the beach and realized that all four tires (plus the spare) were nearly completely bald. Thankfully my boyfriend used to own a Jeep and was comfortable changing the tire himself, because there was no way we were going to be able to get someone from the rental place to come help us. They failed to respond to many text messages and phone calls, and when we went to the office (during business hours) to get a new tire to replace the spare, no one was there. At one point all of the sensor lights on the dashboard came on (judging by the reviews this is pretty common). The Jeep frequently struggled to switch gears and had trouble switching between 4WD and 2WD. It was super stressful. The only reason Im giving it two stars instead of one is because we never did get truly stranded-- just inconvenienced. But I would definitely NEVER rent from them again.
Got a reservation confirmation email. When we got there, the store is closed!!! Never answers phone calls and texts!
Should have read the reviews prior to reserving a car to see how bad this company is in their service. Fortunately I got an email a day after booking saying they don’t even have the type of car that their website told me was available or any other car for the dates I entered. Only issue here is they took all of my personal info. Don’t recommend.
A reservation with a quoted price made in advance is a contractual agreement between parties to honor said price or forfeit funds provided. Not doing so is considered fraud and illegal. When Coqui engages in this behavior as they commonly do, do not take it up with them. Contact your creditor as I did and you will immediately be refunded to equal the agreed upon rate. Such actions are noted as fraud violations of use with said creditors and they will no longer honor their business.
Pathetic service, even after booking and having a confirmed reservation, they denied your reservation and lady at desk show lot of attitude
I have went through all the reviews here before booking a jeep with them during Thanksgiving week. I was very hesitate to book with them due to all the negative reviews on google but they are the only one who have car available at the time of my reservation since I am traveling during holiday. It turns out its not a bad choice. The truth is that: their vehicles are kind of old compared to other mainland US big car rental companies and all of the indicator lights(such as engine, tire, break, safe belt) are on all the time. However, it was a common case on Vieques island since it is hard to update cars regularly as large car rental companies in mainland US. Basically most of Jeeps in Vieques have this problems and usually its just sensor thing and wont have actual safety impacts. That being said, you still need to be careful. Since low tire pressure light was on and I dont know whether its a sensor or real problem. I pressed the tire hard and I can feel this time was real. We spent $2 to added some airs to the tire. The PSI was just 10 and in general it should be around 30 to 50 for a Jeep. There was another review about low tire pressure and flat tire. I think they didnt add air since no one knows if its a real problem or just sensor. Just pay additional attention to it.Everything else was just fine besides the low tire pressure. The tire indicator light was still on after we added air so the sensor problem is true. They also have a drop box to return cars after hours. There is no problem to return your rental car and catch a ferry in early or late time. Coqui dont take advantages for their customer so I would recommend feel free to rent with them and just be as cautious as you rent with any other companies.I took one star off for low tire pressure of my rental car. Also a suggestion for Coqui, since the indicator lights are always on, please double check and make sure these problems are not real before renting them out. (in my case, the low tire pressure was real) Not everyone will check the tire and they may end up with a flat tire.
My experience with this company was the most negative Ive ever had with any company, period. Heres why:- Your email confirmation price is not honored in person.Upon arrival, they wanted to charge us 35% more than the amount we had confirmed months earlier online. When we questioned this, the person behind the desk began yelling at us that the confirmation does not guarantee any kind of pricing and that the confirmation number is not the same as a reservation number. She went on to accuse us of causing her her to stay an hour late at work for which she would not be paid (even though she had already added an extra $8.50 extra hour fee to the bill). The reason we were late is that even though I had reserved airport pickup, she would not come get us. A kind fellow at the airport gave us a lift because there were no taxis at the airport and we had no cell phone reception! So yes, we were late.-If you have an issue you cannot reach anyone by phone. You can only communicate by text or email and this is obviously is not ideal when issues arise.- The cars are in terrible conditionOurs was pretty rough, had a check engine light to come on the following morning. We reached out by text and email with no reply. When I went back to the office in person to request a different car, none were available and I requested a refund for the remaining time on the rental. At this point the same person tried to pressure us into keeping the car, stating we would be unable to rent from any other companies (due to high season), but we had no issue getting a car from a different company.-If you need a refund from them for some reason, it can take up to 7 days for the refund to process.-If you schedule airport pickup, you cannot count on it!It is my impression that Island Jeep Rental and Coqui are the same company (all paperwork I received from Coqui states Island Jeep Rental). If you look at other reviews, you will note some of the same issues. Save yourself some heartache and precious time wasted on this beautiful island and avoid this company. There are other, much more professional companies to rent from (Maritzas! See separate review).
Im not sure why this place gets so many bad reviews. We had a great experience and Mayra went above and beyond when we missed our ferry to accommodate us. No surprise fees or sensor warnings like the other reviewers claim and the originally quoted price is what we paid. Would rent from them and again and I recommend highly!
Be careful. This place scams. Made reservation online and they charged me more with refusal to honor the reserved price. I would never refer anyone to any company that commits fraud on such a level.
I do not recommend this place for rent a car for a main reason. The cars are not reliable at all, really not in good conditions and they dont seem to care that much.Ill explain, we had a reservation for a jeep patriot for 5 days. We took it in the afternoon, and already the car had a engine light signal on. The next morning another light turned on, the one from the battery and this time I had no power when I try to accelerate. So I brought it back. Not even 24h and first car.Sure, they replaced it quickly (30min) for a better one. First day with the new one was fine except the same light about the engine but they just said its normal (for them a warning light on the engine is alright).Second day we took a dirt road (half of the roads on vieques are dirt road). We got a flat tyre which can happen, but when I checked the condition of the tyre... My god. You cant let people go on the road with tyres like that.So I wanted to change the tyre myself, but wow, surprise ! The tools for change the tyre werent the good ones. I called them, text them and no answer. Few hours later, no news from them but two guys came and replace the tyre.Third day was alright.Fourth day, the airbag light turns on and suddenly the car started to do a weird noise. We checked and the cooler was leaking. So one time more we bring back the car, they started to be upset about it but just as I was. They replaced the car again. I decided to use it the less I could for the last day I had the car. Still the same engine light and airbag light but thats all normal, you know. I swear I just went to the place I rented which was like 3 km away from the office. Went on the beach nearby the house and thats all. Next day I take the car because it was the end of our stay when I realize another tyre was flat. They really dont care about their cars, and they make you feel yoy guilty to just drive around. So 3 cars in 5 days. Either Im the most unlucky driver of the World, either this company is not serious. And when I see the rates they got, I have my own idea of the answer.Enjoy Vieques though, It is wonderful there :)
Nice and clean jeeps, good price and nice customer service
This car rental is the party of robbers!!! To protect their car window they did something to disable the lock of one car door so that local robber don’t need to break their car windows to steal people’s luggage from their rental car! How did we find out? We were so lucky that our Airbnb allowed us Checkin earlier right after we got the rental car and before we drove around the island. When we asked the Airbnb owner it is safe or not if we lock our luggage in the car. The Airbnb owner told us the nasty secret of rental cars about the disable door lock on this island. I could’t believe it until we checked and verified it. I was sweating at that moment without a single word. How selfish and how mean they are to visitors! I don’t know other car rental did the same thing or not, but this one did!!!
After driving to the ferry terminal paying for parking, paying for my family of 4 to go to Vieques and back. Sat there and waited for the ferry because you “must” be there to make it onto the boat, only then did I receive an email that my reservation was canceled because “their system overbooked”. Ended up not going the the island having no transportation and no other rentals available without a reservation. And my fear was the ferry system trying to get to Vieques. I was wrong.
BEWARE, BEWARE, BEWARE, BEWARE This place is a total rip off after paying for insurance on the vehicle they still charge me $ 250 dollars for the small scratch on the bumper. Even if you have insurance according to the lady on the counter will not take the insurance from the reservation and i had to pay extra $250 dollars and they refuse to refund the money. It is sad that this company still has the door open doing this type of business. The first lady told me not to worry about the scratches and the next day they had another lady on the counter trying to collect for the scratches the other lady didnt mark on the paperwork on this old Jeep after pointing it out to her. Anyway im pretty sure in the near future i will not recommend or rent from this folks ever again . Is sad they trying to get every penny from the tourist.
I cannot say enough bad things about this company. DO NOT USE THEM EVER. I reserved a car online, and they sent me an email confirming the reservation. I showed up and they had nothing. No joke, it was a nightmare. To make matters worse it was a busy weekend and every car on the island was rented. Really screwed up our trip. Furthermore, the guy was a jerk. Worst company.
We arrived at the airport and soon after Mayra brought a red jeep. We had a fantastic and amazing time driving throughout Vieques. The jeep is the way to see Vieques. Great experience with Island Jeep rental. Will definitely book with them again.
If only i could give 0 stars I would . Its not a car rental its a scam shed! First of all We payed for one kind of car for 2 days and they tried to give us other car with differet price for only a day instead. It seemed weird . But whatever, we resolved it, payed the difference- got the other car (cz they didnt have anything else despite the fact three made a reservation in advance). We Went to the other side of the island to the beach....it was a big thing that ate gas like a tank! All the possible dashboard lights turned on Every time we park it, it was a problem to start it . Its a low season, no people on the beach, no phone service.... was a little bit scary . When It barely turned on again we decided that the time has come to return this “car”, and headed to the rental office wasting time that we could spend on the beach relaxing! There was no one in the office. After some time lady came and told us that she willGave us a refund because that was the only car the place had at the moment ( it is a low season by the way). She asked us if we refilled the car with gas.what?!? I didnt expect question like that and was shocked. Then she said she will charge us for the gas that we wasted!!Quick recap-we wasted our time on the island on a broken car and had to refuel it? Really??There are other car rentals on the island so avoid this one like the plague.
As stated in other reviews a confirmation is not a reservation and this is not stayed or explained anywhere. It is very misleading to think you have a confirmation when it actually doesnt mean anything.
DO NOT RENT from these crooks! I rented a car online, paid an extra $15 for the car to be deliver at the airport. I meet with the agent & sign all the paperwork, I even let her know I had added additional insurance to my own policy. She said “Oh we’ll find something.” She leaves, I get in the car and the check engine, oil, and tire lights are all on. The low tire alert is going off every 2 min. The tires are bald and the car smells mildewed (to be expected on VQS). It was Saturday night and they were closed on Sunday. I called & texted Monday AM at 9:30- no reply. I call again at 11:30 and I get who I can only assume is the crooked owner. She said she was delivering another car but she could meet me at the shop after lunch at 1. I go to the office at 1. 1:30 rolls around & she shows up. We get the car traded out & I’m on my way.I then notice a $250 fee smoke. No one smoked in the POS vehicle. As you can see from other reviews they’re crooks, they rent out dangerous vehicles, and find something to tag you with, like $250. I should have listened to the agent who works for the crooked car rental about “we’ll find something “. Rent from here if you want to get totally screwed.
DO NOT RENT FROM HERE! The car died after 1 hour and they refused to answer phone or refund any money! Complete rip off! STAY AWAY!!
DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE RENT FROM THIS COMPANY!!! About 4 sensors continued to beep the entire time we used the jeep including the seatbelt sensor. But thats not the worst of it! They quoted us $60 to rent a jeep for a day. They said they would not charge us a pick-up or drop-off fee if we walked from the ferry to their location to rent it. When we rented it all they said was dont bring it back with the entire beach in it. So we were careful to brush off our feet before getting in the vehicle and before we returned it we brushed off the seats. One seat was SLIGHTLY damp because we had been in the ocean but I had towel dried, put on dry clothes over my bathing suit, and also put a dry towel in the seat to keep the seat from getting wet. They charged us an extra $150 for the seat being just a tiny bit damp!! When I asked the lady what I was supposed to have done in addition to all the precautions I had already taken she said I should have taken off my bathing suit on the beach before I put on the dry clothes. Im not sure what type of culture she is from but under no circumstance do I think its appropriate to tell your customer she was supposed to strip naked on a public beach. The lady was EXTREMELY rude and when my boyfriend and I both tried to talk to her she was looking around the room like we werent even there. Also, she charged us a $15 pick-up fee AND a $15 drop-off fee when we had already been assured we would not incur that fee. ALSO, the man who worked there swung open the back of the jeep as soon as we pulled up and our snorkeling gear fell out all over the asphalt, scratching both of our masks and he didnt even apologize! In total, ONE day of a jeep rental from these people cost me $300 and it was supposed to be $60. PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT THESE PEOPLE!!! This company also goes under the name Island Jeep.
They’re in a great location, the staff is friendly, but I would go elsewhere. I rented a Jeep from them for about 24 hours. When I picked it up, they noted damage on the body from previous renters, which I was fine with since I didn’t expect to be charged for it. It’s a Jeep so damage is expected. When we got to our hotel (a 15 minute drive away on paved roads), my friend noted that one of the tires looked low. When I looked closer I saw that the tires were pretty beat up (sidewall damage and bald) but didn’t think much of it as the the Jeep itself was in rough shape. At about that time the tire pressure monitoring system lit up. I returned the vehicle the next day without any comments from the rental agency. A day or two later I got an email from the agency stating that I was being charged an extra fee for damage to the tires. I asked them if it was in relation to the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and was told no, since that system was already malfunctioning before the agency rented the Jeep to me. At that point I told the agency not to charge me for this but was told that I was responsible. I only had the Jeep for a day, I didn’t use 4WD, nor did I go anywhere where that kind of damage could have occurred. More than that, the agency knew that the TPMS was malfunctioning in the first place. I’m working with my credit card company now to resolve this but it’s already a hassle and almost doesn’t seem to be worth the time. Save yourself some grief and go somewhere with better customer service, better vehicle service, and better reviews.
Worst experience renting a car in Vieques - and I have rented >10 vehicles throughout the years. From numerous past experiences I strongly recommend Maritza’s Car rental instead - the only reason we couldn’t use them this time was because they didn’t have a large enough vehicle available.Car was scratched before use (all which is documented in initial inspection) and was returned in same condition. The car rental manager then proceeded to charge me 250 dollars without my consent several hours after returning car and after they informed me through email even though I remained at car rental location with vehicle for 30 mins without anyone inspecting vehicle. Of note, we dropped the car at 2:30pm after waiting 15mins for someone to arrive and our ferry was not leaving until 3:30pm (car rental is 5min walking distance to ferry dock). Other clients had been waiting for even longer to pickup vehicles and I doubt the car was “immediately inspected” after we left.My concern is they could be charging for this damage to people who rent this car (and other cars) just to collect damage money and not fix it. Otherwise car’s paint would have been in perfect condition to begin with.I did file a claim to the BBB and recommend anyone concerned about this business practices to do the same.
Fantastic company and a big applause to Mayra at the leasing office my family and I had a terrible experience with another rental company who without notice cancelled our reservation after we got to vieques and mayra made it happen for us thank you very I highly recommend them
The staff was great, great location! Got everything I needed and wanted.... perfecto!
The owner was very nice. Rented a 4x4, it had damaged seatbelt sensor and tire air pressure. Returned the car and after two min driving car had also seat belt sensor damaged, as well as tire pressure and transmission sensor. The seatbelt sensor was a big problem, as it kept beeping all the time. Owner offered return and refund.
A year ago I rented a Jeep. The engine sensor and the seat belt sensor and the air bag sensor were on and beeping.Think they buy salvage jeeps and then rent them. So those jeeps have been in car wrecks. They only repair the body but not the airbags or seat belts. So dangerous.
Called asking about reservations and lady was very rude and as I was talking to her she hung up on me. Ill take my money elswheels.
Always great service & love the jeeps. I would rent from here again
Good deals, friendly people, nice cars
Staffs were rude

Terrible never answers the phone
