I booked a full day charter with this young man for 950.00. I informed him that I was not a novice fisherman and did not want to go on a boat ride. I wanted to fish offshore and if that was not successful, move inshore a fish the reefs and wrecks. Capt. Kyle picked us up on time at 7 am and we headed out. Along the way while in the no wake zone I notice him aggressively turning the wheel round and round to one side and then the other however the boat was staying straight . I asked what was wrong with the steering and he said the hydraulic seals were shot and he had to do this to steer. Red flag number 1. We went about 12 miles to an area called Pushbutton Hill where we proceeded to troll around for hours in the same area with not results. Normally if you dont produce after a few hours you pick up and run to another area. This was a 9 hour charter. There was plenty of time to move to other areas. At about mid day he stops trolling and heads inshore to a wreck about 2.5 miles from shore. He sets the anchor and within a few minutes the anchor breaks loose and gets stuck in the wreck. For the next half hour he tries to free the anchor with no success. I ask if he has an anchor ball (a retrieval device) to pop the anchor loose and he does not. He says thats the 1st time this has happened. Anyone who fishes wrecks knows it can happen and you need a plan B, especially if you have a paid charter on board. Long story short, we spend the next 4 hours catching 6 inch junk fish and one worthless Nurse shark the took about 5 minutes to drag off the bottom. I and my friend suggested we move to another wreck or reef but got no response from the captain. Surely because if he cut loose he could not anchor again with no anchor. Lesson learned. We should have taken a head boat and fished the reefs and saved 900 dollars.
