I don’t enjoy giving a business is a bad rating as I am a business owner as well. My purpose in doing this is to save anyone else from the unfortunate situation that I experienced.One week prior to my arrival in Santa Rosa, I reserved a compact car online on their website. I had the form in person and on my phone and the confirmation number. I got to their facility on Santa Rosa Avenue and was told that no compact cars were available and that I would have no choice but to pay more for the full-size car. In fact, double the price of the compact car.I said to the young woman that I had a reservation and I wanted it to be honored. She said that because I only reserved but did not pay for the car at the time of reservation, that they had a right to charge me for the full-size car instead.I asked her to show me that policy on their website and she said NO. I asked to speak with the manager and was told that he was unavailable and would not be available all day.I then asked her what she would do if she were me. She said that she could not answer me because she had never rented a car before.I left the facility and attempted to find another company and no cars were available. I went back and asked Smith’s Rent a Car and asked if they would honor the price of the compact car for the full-size car. The answer was NO.I am not sure if this would work but my suggestion would be to talk to them in person when making a reservation and get the person’s name and contact information.
I give the staff 5 stars - super friendly & accomodating! But the vehicle itself gets 1 (poss. less) star - dents and scrapes all over the exterior, dust & a few spots of crumbs and spill residue inside, stains on the seat upholstery...which averages out to 3-star rating. For costing roughly the same as the chain guys, I expected roughly equivalent vehicle. But I *did* say all I need is wheels while my car was in the shop. And Smiths was the only place who could get me a car (so I could get back to my busy day) before 10.30am, inside of 30 minutes!
The cars they are renting are not maintained, not safe, and not up to code. My rental car came with the check engine light on, no gas, and bold tires. They say you are able to drive 300 miles a day. I asked the lady at the front desk and guy specifically if the car would make it to Corning, they both said yes. The guy told me to call the number on the sign if I had ANY issues with the car, all the while assuring me that the car would not have any issues. I drove about a hour and a half away and the tire blew out on the freeway with my kid in the car and we almost spun out. When I called them they told me it is my responsibility to fix the tire and would not contact the manager because it was his day off and they didn’t want to “bother him”. Mind you it’s memorial day weekend is so all tire stores are closed already and the car is due back tomorrow. The contract I signed does not say anything about the tires being the customers responsibility. Moreover, I purchased their insurance. This has been an extremely frustrating experience. Their vehicles are ran down and not up to code. I will be contacting my lawyer and the FTC. Do not give this company your money

Worse place to rent a vehicle. I have no words that can explain how NON professional these people are. Super rude, they rent me a car which would never pass the safety control. Tires were done, smell smoke in the car, and the breaks signal was on. The lady at front desk was absolutely so rude and care less. Worse business ever !!!!
Do NOT RENT A CAR FROM HERE!!! I reserved a compact car for 1 week, upon pick up the car had been wrecked and then I started it the check engine light came on. They sent back to the shop to look at, brought it back out & said its fine! I drove to lake Tahoe after the 4th day the check engine came back on, the transmission was clearly not ok. I didnt drive again until the day we were coming home. That morning it was really not running well, I called & asked if they wanted me to still drive the car back & they said yes. It was a nerve racking drive home, but we made it safely!! I asked if they were willing to refund me 2 days of rental & they basically laughed in my face!!! I will NEVER do business with them again!!!
My family and I rented an RV from Smith’s with plans to go on a relaxing two-week road trip. Unfortunately, the rental process was extremely frustrating. I reserved linens and kitchenware in advance and I paid for them upon arrival. We waited around for at least 30 minutes after our scheduled pickup time for them to finally bring us our RV. When we asked for the items we had reserved and paid for, the manager, Omar, informed us that they did not have any linens or kitchenware to issue us. After expressing our frustration, he eventually bought us a collection of dirty glassware, silverware, and random pots and pans. We had to purchase our linens from another store on our way to our first destination.Once on the road, we realized that the vehicle was likely out of alignment. We called Smith’s and they told us that they do not regularly test drive the vehicles and that the previous renter said that the vehicle was in good repair. Shortly after, we noticed that there was no windshield wiper fluid and that the windshield wiper blades needed to be replaced. The side view mirrors were also not fully operational.Once we got to camp, we noticed that the black water valve did not fully close which resulted in a mess every time the tanks needed to be emptied. The hot water heater also didn’t work so we had to take cold showers for two weeks. The bathroom door was not aligned properly and constantly flew open while driving and the deadbolt on the RV door did not work - both of which resulted in excessive cabin noise. The broken deadbolt also caused a safety hazard while driving and a security issue while sleeping.When we returned the RV, we expressed our concerns and hoped that the business would make things right. They were very unreceptive and did not offer to fairly compensate us. They also did not seem to be concerned about the maintenance requirements of the vehicle or the well-being of their future customers.My family and I spent a lot of money on this vacation and we were hoping that things had gone a bit smoother. I would not recommend renting Smith’s due to their extremely bad business practices.
Called to reserve a car and was told that she could take our reservation and couldn’t guarantee a vehicle. She also went o. To say it was first come first serve. How do you get business like that? Customer service needs more training or at least have a note pad with notes on how to rent a car.
Terrible customer service. New to town for Sonoma state and needing to rent a car for my son. Woman on the phone hung up on me when I requested to speak to her manager. Hung up on me again when I called back. They quote a price and then change it when confirming. Would give zero stars if possible.
They lost my reservation and didnt have a car for me. But they are great people. I just had a bad day with them.

They have a variety of cars that you can get you dont need a major credit card but you do need a lot of cash to put down if youre going to be renting a car for a week which is at a fair price on average about $800 for the week which is good if you need a car without a credit card so and its on the avenue going towards Todd road easy in and out so go check them out
Theyre convenient I assume. The rental was for my lady. She did seem pretty pleased though. I didnt see much of a selection.
They are so expensive. My charge 7=$460. When I made the reservation on their instant quote online, the total said $320 for 7 days. I also say with a 7 day rental I would receive a free day. When I returned the car I asked why the big difference in price. They told me I was charged and extra 16 a day for their coverage. Um ok for a total of $112 more then the quote given online.
Limited miles. Ok price but not easy to rent from. Limited miles so I went to enterprise. Smith is not bad though.i have rented from this company and was happy. The staff is really really awesome .this place just has very limited availabilities as they get booked very fast. Be sure to rent ahead ahead ahead of time!!!! And make sure ur going under 300 miles as that is the max then its a dollar a mile after that.i went to idaho so it would had cost me 600 bucks if I had rent from them. Good thing enterprise had a vehicle available at last minute.
Was discriminated to the fullest, yelled at and had the police called on for asking for their corporate phone number and print out of my rental history. Omar Gutierrez continued to bully me throughout the entire process.
Booked a uhaul moving truck online and my pickup was at Smiths. I drive 70 miles to pick up the uhaul and the staff at Smiths tell me the previous renters hadnt returned the uhaul moving truck at 9am, like they were supposed to. I received NO phone call letting me know the truck had not yet been returned and that there wouldnt be a truck for me to rent after driving 80 minutes and putting miles on my car. There were 3 other uhaul moving trucks in the parking lot, but Smiths staff tell me they arent for 1 way use and they cant turn them into 1 way use. I could still rent a uhaul, but I would have to bring it back within 24 hours. The other moving truck rental companies have nothing for me last minute, so I settled for uhaul, but asked about reimbursement for the inconvenience. I was referred to Darcy from uhaul corporate who said she couldnt help me and any mile/gas incentives would be up to the individual agency. Smiths manager/owner was supposed to speak with me, but NEVER called me. So, I took the uhaul, spent a few hours clearing out my storage unit/loading the truck, spent 90 minutes driving home in traffic, unloaded the uhaul in an hour, then turned around and drove 70 miles back to Santa Rosa. I just got my receipt and SMITHS CHARGED ME $200!!!!! So, to clarify, they screwed up my rental, refused to allow me a 1 way that I reserved, then charged me for the extra miles put on the truck by returning it to Smiths-like they had asked. I would NOT RECOMMEND Smiths to anyone.

Cancelled on me just days before my move-in day due to an over-booking. After reading more reviews on here, seems I dodged a bullet. In addition, the policies listed on their site and what the representatives on the phone say are entirely different. My advice is to avoid this establishment, as they seem to have quite the pattern for unprofessionalism.
This place is great .friendly people good selection of vehicles . You dont need a credit card for deposit 200 dollar cash deposit is all that is needed. If u dont like the vehicle ur in u can bring back and they will gind one u like .I would and do recommend smiths auto rental to anyone who needs a car or truck .
Not happy! We were quoted approx. $150 per month to store our trailer. Turns out they charge every 28 days, so by the end of the year youve paid 13 months rent for 12 months storage.Now one month later we found a better price on storage. We went to check on our trailer, someone had tried to steal our generator off the back of our trailer. I told the office that someone tried to steal it, I asked them to look out for me. 4 days later I came to pick up my trailer and my generator was gone. $900 GONE! They didnt care, they said their cameras couldnt see the person because it was dark out. The generator is over 200 lbs. so it had to be a 2 person job, no way to lift over fence, so they went right through the gate. Im mad, they didnt care!

Rented a 30 motorhome through Cruise America with them, got a call morning of pickup that only a 25 was available. They tried to give me an unsafe motorhome with major cracked windshield, bald tires, and filthy interior with moldy shower curtain. I was given another motorhome that was clean and safe, but water heater didnt work, kitchen kit was missing 80% of the supplies it should of had, and septic hose had holes. Very shady to try to rent unsafe equipment that could kill my family, and not give appropriate equipment that was paid for (and not refunded). Will never rent from this group again. Staff was nice, but unhelpful.
This place was so kind to my elderly boss. He can be a little tricky to work with sometimes. Even though he took the car back twice because he didnt like it. The ladies at the desk switched him out no problem. Thanks ladies for being so great at your job and taking the time to make an old fella happy.

Worst place ever reserved a truck halfway to my location it broke down. Call them for help and they said they couldnt do nothing about it and gave me a road side assistance number. Call back smiths they did not answer. Next they they call me same guy I call in the beginning and he acted like nothing happened asking when will I be returning the truck I told them there truck broke down and they should call the number they gave me road side assistance they had their truck. If you leave your car with them parking not safe they have only one camara. Not all cars parkings are cover with camara viewing. Worst place ever will not recommend.

Not only are the prices above average, I was offered three different cars each of which was more disgusting than the last! To top it off, they don’t accept waiving insurance due to a credit card offering coverage (e.g. Platinum Amex). The only reason they didn’t get 1 star is that they did have availability last minute and the staff were relatively nice. If I were you, I’d spend a few more minutes and check out another company.
I am writing this review because Ive established myself as a good paying customer.The agents that have served me have been the ever. They are friendly, great customer service and they know by name now. I have been totally pleased with the availability of vehicles when Ive called at the last minute. What a great team!!! keep up the good work and dont lose that quality of service that you possess. It beats all. Could be because they have new ownership now. Literally the best rental car service in the Santa Rosa area.I came from Los Angeles to visit some friends and family and wanted to rent a car, I went to Enterprise and Avis and they didnt want to accommodate my needs. So I went to google and I found this place Smiths rent a car and I spoke to Jose and he set me up with a great car and price. I have rented cars, trucks and SUVs from Smiths Rent-A-Car. I will never go anywhere else. Easy to reserve, easy with the pick up, easy with the return. Service is excellent, cars are clean and well maintained. There is no reason to go anywhere else. I have even rented U-Haul trucks from them and had a great experience with that and moving is never fun. The rates are better than any other rental agency and the staff make renting enjoyable.I will never go anywhere else.

Fast friendly service and we were in a tight spot lpoking for a medium size boc truck with a ramp and they were able to work something out with us and still able to have it available for the next customers early morning next day rental. Great business

My reservation was not honored.. I reserved a tow dolly and when I showed up to the location they didnt have one available. Had to go to Novato to rent the tow dolly... This locations employees are incompetent. Sorry, but its true.

Avoid this place like the plague. They seemed professional over the phone, but thats where it ended. The cargo van I rented was missing half its paint and had dents all over, there were no license plates, and the AC was broken. By the time I saw it I had no time to rent another vehicle. I had to get another rental to meet a client with once in southern CA the van was so embarrassing. They gave a 15% discount after a bunch of time was spent complaining, but I would never rent from them again. It was a horrible experience.

I wish there was an option for zero stars!This place is renting cars illegally. I was rented a car with very bald tires and bad front brakes. I was without the use of the car for two days while the brakes were being replaced. They were literally metal on metal. They indangered the lives of my family with their carelessness. Afterwords they charged me for going over the mileage (which I have pictures of to prove differently) and refuse to do anything about the rental fees they charged me for an unsafe car. Besides all that the check engine light was on. They claimed it was just the gas cap. I went and had it checked. Its on for three different reasons, not just the gas cap. Ill be in touch with my attorney today! Dont risk your life. Rent from someone else.
I wonder if Jan Ferguson rented the same van that I warned them about 6 weeks ago...AVOID THIS PLACE.In short, I paid them 2 days rental to clean their car for them, only to have to rent another vehicle elsewhere because the car was was poisoning the passengers.I booked a truck back in April. I showed up to find that all the cars on the lot are damaged, totaled, or poorly kept up.I eventually got into a large van, being the only option that, aside from the missing hubcaps, didnt have substantial body damage.Upon parking the vehicle, I found that the interior that had supposedly cleaned, was covered in still wet coffee on the walls of the vehicle, crumbs everywhere, and the handles to get in and out, as well as the remainder of the inside, were absolutely filthy. I wish I had photos of the before and after, but I had to clean it out myself and removed years of grime and film before picking up the party.The radio did not work. At all. No sound.After a half days use, the van began stinking of brake smoke... in the middle of Napa. Luckily, we were able to rent a last minute (and much nicer) vehicle through Toru (thank god). I had to drive the van from Napa to Novato to drop it off and pick up the other rental, then back to Napa to save the party. Once we were done, I then had to go back to Novato to drop off the other rental and pick up the van and drive it back to Santa Rosa to get my own car and get home.The whole trip was a debacle, it was costly, time consuming, and exhausting.Ive called over a dozen times since then. I was initially told that the van was in the shop after we dropped it off which supported my complaint and that I would receive a refund. I requested a refund and was told on multiple occasions 3-5 business days. After 3 weeks, no refund. Suddenly I could not get anyone to call be back. I was told each time that I called that someone would get back to me that day. It never happened. It is clear that they are avoiding me. Very, very poor business practice.The story has since changed to the car was only in the shop for an oil change. Then, it wasnt in the shop, they just checked it after I complained and there was nothing wrong. I did not make anyone aware of the issue until the following Monday when the car was (as I was initially told) already in the shop.I called for the final time today and was told that the refund was completed. I explained that this was my deposit, and not a refund on the rental. I was basically blown off with some snotty comments about having put 200 miles on the car in the single day I had it. yes, well, I did in fact. I had to drive it over and hour just to pick up the other rental, then another hour to get it back so that the passengers werent stuck in Napa or chocking on fumes.What a waste of time and money.
