I rented a premium SUV, and they gave me a nice Jaguar, but it smelled very badly like cigarettes. I wouldnt care that much if it was a cheap rental, but it was meant to be a nice treat for vacation. TERRIBLE experience with returning. They advised that I needed to return the car by 6pm (as the two signs on the door also say) and when I arrived prior to 6pm to return the car, they said 5:45 was the latest dropoff, and they charged me for another day. When my wife came to drop off the key at 9am b/c they dont have a drop box, they accused her of lying, then they said she needed to drive the car to the mezzanine. When she asked where that was, they said they didnt know. The people who work there legitimately dont know what theyre doing. This place will not keep its doors open with service like that.
Worst experience ever. Came on time to pick up my pre paid rental, they told me I have to wait for an hour because my car comes from another location. What’s the point of booking a car DAYS IN ADVANCE if it can be there on time?You guys are a joke.You want a reliable rental, go somewhere else.No commercial gesture, no discount, nothing.Is that what you guys call a service? I call that a fraud.
Convenient pickup and easy drop-off. We were able to drop off our car in less than a minute at 5PM on a Saturday. It was a breeze - there was no wait, the guy greeted us with a smile, checked the mileage and gas level, offered option of email receipt so we could just park, gather our things and be on our way. The car itself, Nissan Altima, was clean and well maintained.
Called to see if they could help me rent a car for an upcoming date and the man stated, Yeah, did you check online. I said, yes, of course, however it wasnt letting me select this location, to which he responded, Yeah, can I just give you the reservation line and they can help you? I am trying to get paperwork done here.Sure, yes, you can give me the number... And I will just call another rental service. /shrug.
Did all booking online so my experience here was brief, but they got me processed quickly and I was off with my car in no time.
I have a foreign drivers license and needed a car to do the driving test with to get a US license. Hertz was the only rental agency I found where this was easy, they knew what to do right away and had a prepared insurance letter for the DMV. Pickup and dropoff was quick and easy.
The staff is rude and surcharged me $75 by claiming I am not qualified for my own insurance and have to use their insurance. In deed,they cancelled my original reservation and made a new one to charge me more. Very disgusting!!!
We had a miserable experience returning the car. Make sure to get there at 5:30 PM even though they close at 6 PM. We called ahead to let them know we were running late and they said as long as you get here by 6 you’ll be fine. We retuned the car at 5:50 and they were gone. The person at the garage said there was nothing they could do if it was after 5:45 PM - which was NOT MADE CLEAR WHEN WE CALLED. When we returned the keys the next morning, they asked us to move the car again instead of just taking the keys and made a big deal about needing a parking ticket and parking in the Mezzanine even though I parked where the garage attendant pointed me to.The pickup wasn’t great either. We paid for a Range Rover and ended up with a Jaguar which is fine but the vehicle smelled like smoke. When we tried to pick up early they made a fuss about that and acted like they had no idea what our reservation was even though the car was in their garage. We were able to leave early so that was a plus.
If you need the car class you actually reserved, I recommend renting from somewhere else.
We waited for 1 and a half more hour, the car was not ready. Arlene is not, at all, nice to the people and the managger didnt help. The car has not a jack... never ever in my life i will work with them.
There’s a lot of poor reviews here, not doubting anyone’s experience - but I was in and out of this Hertz in about 15 minutes. They had the exact car I booked and were very polite. Would visit again

I don’t usually write reviews but I had to because this was the worst customer experience I’ve ever dealt with in San Francisco.I came in with a reservation (already paid) and they told me I needed to wait 3 hours. No sympathy. No explanation. Nothing. It was honestly infuriating.There was another customer that came in with the same situation and the guy helping her was literally raising his voice and talking down at her.Don’t book here.
The Hertz at Mason never has the cars ready on time for our reservation. Made us wait an hour each time we went to pick up our reserved cars. This has happened multiple times. Would not recommend if you’re running on a schedule.
This is my go-to car rental location in SF and I’ve always had a great experience. I make reservations through the Hertz website and they always have my car ready on time and occasionally get a nice upgrade. The staff is friendly and the hours are convenient. Great rates with the Amex Platinum card too!

Came back 2 times and counting to pick up lost keys because they made multiple mistakes and it was a hassle to go back each time.First time: they said they misplaced and couldn’t find it and they’d call me again when they got it. Already annoyed.The never called so I had to follow up a week later.Second time: came in on a Sunday and they said the “lost and found person” doesn’t work Sunday/Monday and to come in on Tuesday. What does that even mean?! If your office is open you should have all staff trained to manage a simple list and found, no?Third time’s the charm? I don’t know..
I called for a mini van. Barun- the agent- right away just stated I dont have nothing for Sunday or Monday without checking it out 🙄😒was very loud and kept on stating I dont think you can get nothing and go online, so I request to check and maybe he did, but stated again go online okay byeWhat happen to customer service 😕nowadaysWe all dont use the online some its donto certain disabilities, so this is why we call 😣
The rental process was not as smooth as my usual Hertz experience. Got rather outdated car with multiple scratches, and my membership status was not recognized...overall mixed feeling.Hertz in general is great, perhaps this rental was an exception.
They did not have the car I reserved, and I was downgraded to a smaller vehicle. I would have appreciated a call ahead of time so I could have adjusted my plans accordingly.
I used to get good service. I tried to get an estimate of one more day, the web locked it in, when I tried to fix it, I was told gotcha and customer service said I had to go tot he counter. No one answers at the counter. I dropped the car off a day early and was charged an extra $300. The web contact keeps giving me an error, I cant do this on the telephone, no one responds on social media. Hertz sucks. If you cant fix a $300 error (for ONE extra day), thats a gotcha ripoff. And disappointing. So many years using them.They did finally fix this but only via Twitter.

Horrible service, made a reservation two weeks in advance and they did not have a vehicle, they proceeded to very rudely say that they were busy and could have a car for me, maybe in one hour but couldn’t guarantee it. The staff was rude and unapologetic and offered no solutions. Not sure what the point of making a reservation ahead of time is.
Incredibly slow service and poor social distancing. The other companies in the area offered contactless pickup which made me feel so much safer then waiting indoors for 30+ mins for the desk person to enter each persons info manually
Very helpful, friendly, and kind. the car was immaculate. no sneaky fees. one caveat is location... is sort of difficult to drop someone off safely due to being downtown. not their fault, just a head’s up.
I’ve rented from this location a significant number of times. Despite being a president’s circle member, they refuse to provide free upgrades (will always try to upsell you) and consistently provide a car in a lower class than booked. Their problems become your problems. Just today, they put us in an economy compact when full size was booked (despite multiple BMWs being available). We even had an incident where we were given a car that was not cleaned during covid. Reached out to corporate and no alleviation. Rent from anywhere else if possible.

Probably the most efficient and painless car rental experience Ive had.The staff was friendly and quick - they explained all the extras thoroughly but did not push me to purchase any.When I got to the car, a friendly staff offered a complete inspection (photos emailed) and then we were on our way!Highly recommend this location!

The worst car rental agency I have ever seen in 20 years!I booked a car for 1 day from 9 am to 6pm. I arrived at 9.30 am, did all the paper work and at the end of the process the employee told me they didnt have any car available. He asked me to come back in an hour. After an hour waiting, nothing. After 2 hours nothing. After 3 hours nothing. Absolutely no customers care and no concerns about the clients. The employees told me I should understand that during vacations its hard to get a car. are you kidding me? I asked for a cancellation and reimbursement. They said I had to take care of it contacting the area manager. Of course, after a month I dont have my money back and the broker refused to reimburse me saying the only information they had from Hertz is that I didnt show up at the agency.Thank you Hertz for this great experience !
Booked my reservation 2 days in advance, Im a gold member, got to the place 15 minutes early and I had to wait 45 minutes for a car... Horrible customer service. Id never rent from Hertz again.
I am almost always given a different car than expected. Reserve a Metra get a Honda.
The gentleman who helped me (I believe his name was Romano) was fantastic. I went to my drop off location instead of my pickup location and he worked very quickly to ensure they had a car to offer and took care of everything. He was friendly the entire time, made a great suggestion about purchasing the tank of gas at their rates as I was driving about 240 miles, and we were in and out.

Well, maybe Hertz is no longer what it used to be. We got too Mason street late and the car wasnt ready, the guy who attended us was not well prepared and after 20 minutes dealing with the PC he, as we later realized, didnt even put us in the system. We got back there 5 hours later to pick up the car and the girl at the desk wanted to charge us again for the prepaid car... 🙄 The only guy who knew something about how that worked finally sorted out our problem but I believe we spent well more than an hour to get our vehicle. The only good thing is that we got an upgrade on the 🚙 model. Not recommended, at all 😞
Even tho though Barun at the front desk was rude, snatched my license out of my hand, and continuously talked over me when getting our rental, when we came to return the car Leo was a pleasure to talk to. If it weren’t for him, we would not return. Thanks Leo!
Be careful with this location. We returned our car on time but they didn’t actually check in the car until the next day, and we were charged a late fee which was difficult to reverse. Be sure to ask for a paper receipt when returning your car.
We pre booked the rental car for 10.00 am two months before hand. The service from Hertz was a absolute a disgrace!! We final got our rental Car at 12.30! 2.5 hours later. The customer service was a absolute disgrace from the staff behind the counter they could not care at all!! We were on vacation and we needed to leave for 10.00am as we had stuff booked for the rest of the holiday it made the whole experience a Nightmare!! The Highlight was the Branch manager was not to be seen! as he was hiding upstairs cleaning cars and could not be bothered to deal the the situation that was happening down stairs. With customers asking why the delay. I would never use Hertz or would I recommend them to anyone!!! Avoid!!
Long line in San Francisco. Gold member signage poor could have saved lots of time if visable. Sent us out in vehicle that needed minor repair. Hope they correct the problems mentioned. Did meet nice staff though.
You should be very careful in this store because some receptionists will set traps for you. They just want to make money and they dont care your plan and your time. They will count the car rental time very carefully. However, they wont tell you how to return the cars. There are many obstacles during the car return. Remember that you should take at least 2 hours to return the car, otherwise, it is very easy for you to pay the penalties. The reception service is very bad and some receptionists are very rude. This star is giving to the mechanics. I advise you do not rent a car in this store. If you have to, you will understand what I said.

Hertz Las Vegas in the Flamingo foyer. Quick easy and convenient. Car was up in the car park ready and waiting. Dropped it off in San Francisco just as easy. Would recommend both of these places.
When we were planning our trip we didnt consider the lack of organisation and customer service of Hertz which ruined our second day of holiday.We booked a car for 9 A.M. And we went to the company desk the day before to check that everything was ok with the car, making sure the Car would be delivered on time.However the next day when we went to take our car at 9 A.M. as it was set the car was not ready and we had to wait 2 hours, an absolute Shame because we didnt have any discount either.If you Want to enjoy your holiday DO NOT BOOK a car with HERTZ

Everything was great about Hertz.Ford fusion Hybrid car was a bonus it saved a lot on gas, very clean and excellent service. I will always use Hertz for all my long distance trip.It also has very competitive pricing.
Took our reservation, sent a confirmation, and then when we came to pick up the car they said they had no cars for several hours. People count on these bookings for holidays with their families, and having a day ruined by this poor service is very disappointing.

Read all the fine print before I signed and off we went! Could not have been smoother.
We were supposed to pick up a car at 9am. We got there at 9 and waited an hour. I have never been to a car rental facility more unorganized. I have rented several cars in the past from other companies and have never had an issue. This is by far the worst experience. When you pay and reserve a vehicle online and do everything youre supposed to on your end, you expect that the company will do the same. You reserve something online and plan your arrangements around that reservation. In our case, we had to be at a wedding 2 hours away. We planned to pick up the vehicle and be there ahead of time, yet because of whatever unorganized system, we got a late start. An Amanda is who dealt with us at the counter and although she was nice, we were not at all satisfied because the fact of the matter is: we reserved a car and we expected to get there, give them our name, and drive away. This was not only us by the way. There were probably 10 other people there at the same time who were having the same issues.
I’m a hertz reward member and reserved my car online in advance. The pick up for me is very easy and fast. The only complaint is that trying to get out of garage is little bit confusing.
Wouldn’t rent me a car because the corner of my drivers license was broken off. All information was still visible. Also the opposite of good service. Long lines and incapable management.
I have been renting car in this place for the past two years. Two or three times per month. The service is good, always give me a nice and clean car (sometime free upgrades too).Hertz has a new policy recently -- if you drove less than 75 miles and did not bring your gas receipt, they will charge you a plain fee (around $13?) for refuel. I forgot to bring the receipts several times and the staff waived these charges for me (I did bring back a car with full gas though).

They gives us the smallest car that they could so we didn’t had the choice to upgrade. My daughter was almost 8 years old and they told me that I need to take a baby car seat for her, after checking the us law, she was ok because of her height.When we came back home, they took over 60$ on our credit card for « suppose » car toll!!!!!Never again Hertz.
They have amazing staff that are supremely customer service oriented and are looking to accommodate your every need! The manager there Sue is always willing to go over and above the standard expected anywhere to accommodate those special needs and requests when you need just that very special vehicle! Barun and Armando will go the extra mile as well. Thank you. They always have the best kept and maintained vehicles in the fleet! I am really picky and finicky as to what I will drive when there is a need to have a second or third vehicle for family gatherings or friends from out of town for that day around town and they know that I will not drive a foreign car so they always go out of their way which is not easy as I well know to make sure I have an American made car! That is a very tall order for anyone in this business these days! Thank you guys. With enough advance notice theyve been able to get me a full size Cadillac Escalade and a Chevrolet Suburban! Even the 14 passenger vans can sometimes be secured

I am writing this review after we used this rental office three weeks ago and I was really impressed.I was worried about using Hetz and this rental office after these reviews but they were a very friendly set of staff. They were very patient when I was trying to match everything up to the terms I had emailed to me. They even managed to get an extra young driver on the insurance for no extra charge! A lot of the reviews on this seem to be negative but I wouldnt completely trust them as had a good experience and would recommend
If I could give 0 as a rate to this awful experience at Hertz, I would.On August 5th I was supposed to receive a car at 10am to travel from San Francisco to Los Angeles because my brother had to catch a flight. As I got at the the Hertz office right before 10 am, there was a thirty people queue ahead of me and I got to the counter at 10:45am. The lady I dealt with said I would have received my car within 1h and 1h30, which was very disappointing and disruptive for my travel plans. In the meantime, I had to stand at the tiny office with my whole family and luggages, as we didn’t know what time we would have received the vehicle. After 1h30 I queried again what time the car would have been ready for and the same lady said, once again, the wait was between 1h and 1h30. The situation was ridiculous and utterly frustrating. All the people around us were in the same situation and I was risking to miss the flight, with major stress and anxiety. Since I couldn’t wait any longer, I asked the lady to talk to her manager, who I met at another floor and finally was given a car after further half an hour. The delay of over 3 hours in providing a car that by contract was supposed to be delivered at 10am is totally unacceptable and nobody even offered partial refund.

Unlike most Hertz locations, they dont have your car ready for Gold members. It took at least 30 minutes to get the car even though only one person was in line ahead of me. The staff was friendly but its not clear why this is so time-consuming.This location can be a bit tricky to get to if traffic is heavy!
I like Hertz in general. And this location is good in SF downtown. Its a busy location, so beware of traffic. Office hours from 6am to 6pm, but after hours drop off available until 7:45pm. The signs for return can be confusing though.
Reservation to car was 09am. We get car after 2 hour 45 minute later so our trip plan changes. Why they ask pick up time if they cant deliver or inform delay excamble via SMS. Waiting facilities was too small for that amount of people. Staff work hard and was polite. Also when car was ready (cleaning) getting the car goes very smoothly.
I recognize that it was the day after a holiday so I was expecting some delays, but this experience was without a doubt the worst Ive ever had for a car rental. I prepaid for a Standard Elite Crossover Group Z4 (Land Rover Discovery or Infiniti QX60) because I had 6 people in my group. Over the course of 2 hours of waiting, they brought out 2 different cars that were not only subpar but could only fit 5 people. I told the desk agent that I can deal with a wait, but after bringing out 2 cars that did not fit my needs, I wanted to make sure they had a car that was available. I did not want to wait longer just to find out that the car wasnt there. She told me then that they did not have the car that I prepaid for and was not sure if or when they would get it. I called the 1-800 number for Hertz and asked customer service to find another location for me that has a car that could accommodate, but after 15 minutes of searching, they said there were none in all of San Francisco. At that point, the desk agent called me up and asked if they could give me a Dodge Caravan instead as it was the only car they had that could accommodate 6 people. Since I really had no other choice and was already 2 hours delayed at this point, I went ahead and agreed. She said, however, that she could not adjust any rates because I had prepaid. So after waiting over 2 hours for a Land Rover/Inifiniti, I received a Dodge Caravan for the same price of $171.65. I currently have a couple of booked reservations with Hertz, but doubt I will be using Hertz after that.
I have to say that it is the worst renting car agency Ive ever seen. I booked and prepaid a car but when arriving to the agency to take my car at the due time, I had to wait 30 minutes in the line and when it was hopefully my turn, the guy of Hertz told me that the car is not ready and I have to wait 45 minutes more with no possibility to take a seat !! one hour in this unconfortable situation With my two children !! I was not alone in this case, dozen of people also waiting in the corridor. Forced to wait here because Hertz will not call you on phone or other modern uptodate smart app to notify you when the car is ready!! At the end I get my car 2h30 later than the due time!! It is unacceptable !!! It is a shame !! Zero customer service!! No appologize from Hertz people, again it is a shame. Next time I will go with AVIS compagny. I am really fed up with Hertz, especially with this agency at mason street in San Francisco!!!
Genuinely disappointing service, disorganized and unprofessional personnel, huge lines and overbooked cars. We waited for our pre-booked and pre-paid car for 2.5 hours!!!We made an online reservation for 8:30 am on Saturday and fully pre-paid our car.Arrived to the rental office on time, waited in a huge line for about 40 minutes.After not being able to locate our reservation in the system, the agent said that we should wait for our car for another 45 minutes to get it cleaned. At that point, we decided to wait, as we had a prepaid travel plans for this day.We ended up waiting for our car for another 2 hours instead of the promised 45 minutes.What is more, the agent tried to charge us again for our reservation (although we have prepaid it) and tried to charge us twice more for an upper-tier insurance, although we clearly asked for a basic liability insurance w/o CDW.The facility itself does not have enough seats and does not have restrooms. Our 2.5 hours wait was a nightmare.Never ever using Hetzt and clearly not recommending it to anyone. They ruined our travel plans. Insanely bad operations
They dont mention any terms and have absurd rules. This car rental agency is a fraud and the agents are not so friendly and are not ready to help you out despite the heavy amount you pay.
We return our car here. Was nice and easy. In and out. Any problem. You have signals indicating you where you have to go to return the car. Then you have to go downstairs, its not well indicated but a man will tell you where to go.
Do not rent here. I ended up spending $253 to rent a Mazda 3 for 2 days. Their first tier of insurance basically covers nothing so they up charge you $17/day and that’s just for 1 level up. Dollar and Thrifty are in the same garage, go there.
After readig all the bad feedback, we turn up early to be sure to get the car to the appointed time, as we had stuff booked for the next days of our Highway 1 Road trip to LA. It took more than 3,5 hrs before we got a car, and we had to replan and arrange late check in for the night. No compensation, and no understanding for our disappointment from the Hertz staff. Herz Gold Plus membership has no value.
Way under staffed and a victim of their prime location. Chaotic as an English speaker, I can only imagine how confusing this place must seem to a non-English speaker.There doesn’t seem to be any linkage between their operations here and the corporate online booking systems. No text notifications as to car location were received until we’d got the car and were headed over the golden date bridge!Use this place if you can put up with delays, frustration but really need the central location.
They pulled the classic Bait and Switch on me. I booked my reservation online for $32.55 a day for two days, declining the extra insurance that was offered. When I got my bill I was charged an extra $58.18 a day for insurance. The contract I signed when I checked in had the insurance charged embedded in it. The front desk agent never asked me if I wanted it.Yes, I should have read the contract more carefully, but Hertz was deviousand lacking in transparency. I wont do business with them again.I suggest you dont either.

Although frustrating, I can understand when theres a backup or delay waiting for your vehicle. After waiting an hour I decided to approach the desk and inquirer to ETA on my vehicle and was informed were still waiting so turn around and take a seat is not the type of attitude I was expecting. Lots of disgruntled guests in the waiting room were subject to this agents attitude. I will not be chosing this chain in the future. Get some better customer service oriented staff and stick that guy in the back where he doesnt have to interact with the public.
Terrible experience. We booked a car 2 weeks ago and they gave it away to another customer and offered us a Ford Fiesta instead of a Malibu like promised in the system. We were blamed for coming late and that they follow a first come first serve basis; this is so irresponsible considering we’ve paid for this booking way in advance. I’ll never use Hertz ever again!(Edit rating)They eventually gave us an upgrade for the wait and I decided to bump up the stars because they dealt with the situation well.

WAITING FOR SO FKING LONG TIME, YOU GUYS SHIULD DEFINITELY RAISE FKING EFFICIENCY
Hertz has stone age technology which has screwed upmy reservations half the time. If you rent here its quite likely something will go wrong or they wont have a car. Time for a bankruptcy and a reorg.
They dont have cars! Whats the point of requesting a car at a certain time if you are not going to get it until 1 to 2 hours later. The staff could seem to care less as this seems to happen all the time. I could have gone to the airport rented a car and then driven back and picked up my family. It is like the Seinfeld rental car episode. They try to make you feel like they are trying to help you but in the end say that the garage people arent picking up their phone and there is nothing they can do. Rent elsewhere!
Reliable, but you have to be on time for your appointment or else theyll give your car to someone else.
Guy at the front desk was very kind and helpful - but it was obvious that despite my reservation, there was no car available for me at 6am.After some waiting, however, I was out of there and on my way.

Hertz is a joke. I had a car booked at this location for the day on a Saturday. I arrive there early in the morning only to find out they dont have ANY cars available in their garage. They were completely oversold/overbooked and wait-time for them to bring a car in for me was minimum 3 hours. I decided to cancel my reservation. Will never use Hertz again.
Terrible experience. Long waiting times, terrible customer service and no cars available. If I could give it 0 stars I would!
They deserve 0 Stars. My husband traveled to this location, and arrived just before closing, however he had pre-checked-in and we had paid so there should have been no issue. The manager, made up some story about how my husbands drivers license was the wrong color and he thought it might be fraudulent. My husband offered to show his passport as additional verification along with the Visa credit card hes made the reservation with, and the guy refused to even look at them. Said hed had trouble with people from Florida and wouldnt make the rental. My husband asked what could be done and the manager said nothing. My husband said, so youre telling me to go away? and the manager said yes. Left my husband stranded with no transportation and not even an apology or offer of any solutions. That dispicable manager should be ashamed of himself, and I am on the phone to corporate right now to figure out what can be done so my husband isnt stranded.
The staff were very pleasant and happy after our terrible experience with Hertz in LA.
