I found the Sailing class on Groupon, my instructor Mr. Burdette is very patient and knowledgeable, I was offered a great deal in the Yatch Club membership, rentals are not expensive.

Worst Yacht club in the planet !! I presented to pick up my booked charter at their Long Beach branch and I found myself in a marina from hell. All broken dock and boats that were nothing but was a disaster. This place looked like a graveyard for boats. They have no office. A dude shows up and points me to a boat. The boat is from ancient times, very old, filthy dirty, not cleaned from who knows when, human hair on the floor, cleaning cloths left on the floor yet all dirty, toilet and kitchen dirty, toilet dirty and stinks, the whole boat was a disaster. I asked the manager to give me alternative boat. He declined and told me i take it or leave it. I certainly left it. They have no morals and no professionalism. Total scam and rip off. Complained to Health Department and BBB. They should be shut down!. Inexcusable ...

Very nice and clean. Parking entry key a pain. The parking pass only works for 1 gate, even though facility has 3 gates. Security patrol. SeaWorld fireworks visible overnight. A great vacation spot!

We love the instruction by Capt Frank Dixon for the Keel boat class. We love the staff whether it is the inside reservation sales, accounts, and docks they are fun and friendly. We will be doing a 5 day course with Capt Frank Dixon and we are really looking forward to it. When renting out the Keel boat the staff at the docks were immensely helpful, we had plenty of propane for the whole day and the 22 ft sailboat was ready for us right at 9am. Chris and Kevin even gave us a tour of the boats we will be using for our 5 day liveaboard and answered my numerous questions with a smile - like how and where to dock for lunch! The prices are really great too. Thank you so much Harbor Island Yacht Club!!

Great club! We learned how to sail with Frank, who got us feeling pretty good in just our first weekend. We joined the club for discounts on renting our own boats, and have gone out multiple times since then. Its a great feeling being on the water and cruising down to the bridge and back!

Did the 2-day learn to sail class and now I go with friends at least once a month! The club makes it super convenient to rent boats and the bay is a fun place to sail. They take good care of you, we flooded an engine and they sent a guy (Andy) out to help us. Five stars to Andy in particular!

A great place with friendly staff and a nice fleet. The access to the bay is indisputably fine with time to rig up or down. The sailing school is taught by highly qualified and experienced instructors.

My late father, the man who taught me how to sail and race, spoke of this day with his son, grandson & daughter happily sailing up & down the bay, for the rest of his life.My sister reluctantly took the helm and graced us with her first real smile since she became a widow more than a year before. What a way to showcase our city to visiting family & friends..Thanks for the memories and the fine customer care since 87. You all rock.

My most recent experiences have been UNSAFE and disappointing. My last 2 boats I took out with this company have been broken. They KNOWINGLY rented us a boat with a broken motor that would over heat and had a broken temperature gauge. This is a very dangerous risk they took that could have ended disastrously. The staff TOLD us they KNEW there had been complaints about the boat the day before. They said they “didn’t have time to look at the boat because it was rented out 2 days in a row”. There is no excuse to jeopardize the safety and well being of the people on this boat. When we ask for them to come out to the bay and help us they said they were “too busy working on another boat and leaving shortly”! They planned on leaving the office and didn’t even care that we were having issues with one of their boats. I can not recommend this club to anyone.

Rented Souvenir for a 5 days trip to Catalina. From the moment we got in the bathroom (head) there was a terrible smell. The holding tanked leaked every time the toilet was pumped. Could not use the toilet during the entire trip and had to go to shore looking for one. The USB chargers did not work. The main sail was damaged and jammed inside the furling system. The console frame is broken on the right side making the handling of the boat difficult and unsafe because when engaging the gear lever it moves too far forward or backwards. The propane tank hose was kinked so we couldnt cooked until I discovered the problem. The depth finder did not work. The plotter keys were unreadable. The boat was dirty. This the worse rental boat I have ever rented. Will not rent it again. The Long Beach Marina is not a Marina, is a a floating dock in very bad shape making the loading and unloading of the boat unsafe. There is a long sand shoal right in front of the dock area, and we were warned about it, or provided a basic document point out any know dangers

One of the best places in San Diego to rent a sailboat. Very rich choice of options, you can also hire a skipper if you cant sail. Very reasonable prices.

I recently did a refresher class with Nate and the experience was awesome. The instructor took time toverify our comprehension of technical aspects of sailing. The boat was in excellent condition and the section of boats is great for members of all levels. I look forward to future classes and enjoying thephenomenal selection of boats.

Rented the Lagoon 38 Catamaran out of Long Beach from this place back in April of this year from Long Beach Location. Boat had several problems including an overflowed head in the bilge. Boat was in disrepair and nothing like the pictures on their website. The catamaran smelled of feces and urine the entire trip. When we returned the boat we emailed the management and complained and got no response until we left bad reviews on yelp (about a week later). Never got a refund of any kind.

Boats are barely maintained and not cleaned between excursions. A simple wipe.down of the cabin and saloon on our 40 beneteau removed smells that had been there when we resevered the boat a week before. For the price they charge the customer service was appalling.

Ive been a member since 2001 and have a love-hate relationship with the club. The fleet are mostly older and while they do occasionally perform fleet- or model-wide major maintenance the boats virtually always have problems. Sometimes its something minor, like cabin lights out, no propane when you intend to cook, inoperable stereos or speakers, or missing seat cushions (actually the latter two are almost always an issue), but too often its a long list that might include missing anchor, inoperable navigation lights or VHF radios or engines that fail. Once, while out on the bay on one of the newer boats at the time (now really showing their age), a 40-foot Beneteau, the engine wouldnt start and I had to dock it under sail at the public dock at Peohes. I was pretty proud of myself for nailing it, and the dock hands who had come over from the club to do the repairs were actually impressed (which, if you know dock hands, is not an easy thing to do.) Id also had dock hands tell me I was one of their best members. I assume thats because I rent the larger boats frequently, always do as many repairs as I can, myself, and report any other problems I find.In 2009, after 8 years of membership, I moved out of the area and was told I should change my membership to one for non-locals. That was fine, but they said it would be considered a new membership, so my monthly dues would increase from $36 to the then current rate of $42. I protested and they finally allowed me to keep my original rate.In fact, I had had so many problems over the years that, in 2010, after a charter with some major issues, I began asking for some sort of compensation. It took far too much convincing, but the manager, Lance, finally agreed to give me 50%-off the day rate on a 40-foot Beneteau. While I did, and do, appreciate the ~$300 discount, it was really the least they could do, long overdue, and should have been offered, not argued for. A free day would have cost them virtually nothing if no one else was going to charter the boat that day. When I moved back to San Diego in early 2017, after being a member for 16 years, I asked to be switched back to the membership more beneficial to locals and was told they only allow one change in the lifetime of a membership. It really doesnt make that much of a difference, financially, but for a long-time member it was a little offensive. And now, after a charter, when I email the club about problems with the boats I charter, I dont receive a response (let alone a thank you) - even when I specifically ask for the simple courtesy of confirmation of receipt.
