I started training in Shotokan when I was 7 and after achieving Shodan and competing nationally through high school, I hung up my gi and belt in college because of other life priorities. Fast forward over 25 years and I found Tokon Martial Arts in Natomas. Tokon is a traditional, JKA based Shotokan martial arts dojo that emphasizes technique and basic fundamentals like higite and spirit. I joined about 6 months ago with the same enthusiasm and excitement I had when I was a 7 year old. Our entire family has started as well.So Covid provided challenges for many. For the Owners, Sensei Marcus and Sensei Christina, they have persevered by offering smaller classes and utilizing technology to have virtual distance learning with live streaming zoom classes. There is even karatecoaching.com available which I find so valuable to view and review when I try to remember which steps came in the kata or kihon drills we practiced in class. There is a competition track called ECP that many are involved in which is dedicated to competition specific kata or kumite.For some, achieving black belt is the end goal in martial arts. For me, it is way of life and just the beginning now as I have found to understand more of the theory behind the application. I am honored to be a student of Sensei Marcus and Sensei Christina. We feel so lucky to be with Tokon Martial Arts during this pandemic. Sensei Marcus and Sensei Christina were very quick to get live online classes up and running. Not only are the classes abundant, productive and engaging, but theyve also incorporated access to additional world-class training. Of course, we miss seeing everyone at the dojo and nothing can replace the energy of the in-dojo classes... but our daughters (12yo, black belts) are keeping their skills polished and are progressing in many areas. Tokon has also started social-distance outdoor classes, which we plan on attending in the fall. They have classes for all ages from littles (4/5yo) to adults. If youre looking for a way to incorporate fitness, discipline and self-defense in to your childrens (or your) pandemic routine, you and your family will really benefit in giving Tokon a try!

Enrolling into Tokon Martial Arts is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Not only do you learn self-defense and get a full body workout; you learn so much more. My daughter has been a member of this dojo for a few years now. I have seen her confidence skyrocket. She is strong, courageous, courteous, and fierce. I was concerned because she was a quiet child. She kept to herself often but her transformation is because of Tokon Martial Arts and the wonderful team. It was the best decision we could have made for her.

My children and I have been training with Tokon instructors for at least 12 years now.Our instructors, who were former decorated athletes, are amazing, and they really know their stuff. This martial arts school comes from a very traditional line of past teachings that are the modern example of what traditional karate should look like today. The elite teaching staff has decades of knowledge to which they effectively pass down to their students daily. This school is simply amazing and if it were not for me living in another state, this is the traditional karate school I would pick for both “pre” and post modern karate for kit only me but my kids.

My son was 6 when he started with Tokon. We were nervous as we had tried another (a chain) place prior, but it felt like a factory and it was so impersonal. But we knew karate would be a good fit to help our son focus.Tokon feels like a family from the first day! It’s far from a factory. Our son has excelled in the last 6 months with Tokon, and he actually enjoys going. We have tried other sports, but he was never fully interested. He wants to go all the way to black belt now! Tokon is definitely a great martial arts dojo. The Senseis and senpais are really nice and professional. I like how they are not just there to just hand you the next belt but they make you earn it. Great martial arts dojo with great seneis. Sensei Marcus and Christina are experienced and super nice. The senpais at the dojo are always willing to teach and show pride in the dojo. I just started and I’ve learned so much and feel right at home. Highly recommend.

We love taking our son to tokon martial arts! He has been attending for almost 3 years now and Absolutely love it! Sensei Marcus and Sensei Christina are his instructors, owners of Tokon they are extremely personable and truely care about teaching the students the art of Shotokon Karate. My son attends the regular classes as well as the Elite competition training classes (ecp) Which are intense and prepare him for competitions. There he has learned discipline, has gained confidence and many friends along the way, that includes us parents because everyone at the dojo is like family. We couldn’t be more thankful and happy to have both Sensei Marcus and Sensei Christina in our lives!

A true Dojo, with fantastic instruction. Not a corporate belt mill designed to wring money out of you. If you are thinking about putting your child in karate, this is hands down the best place you could choose.

Advertized as a martial arts supply store. Its not. Its a studio dojo.

My kids began Karate classes through an enrichment program at their school. From the very start, both kids responded well to the instructors. Sensei Marcus and Sensei Christina are great with kids. They are a husband and wife teaching team who are both passionate about teaching Karate. Their school is family operated and owned. Their deep passion and love for the art resonate through all of their students including those who are now referred to as sempai (teachers assistant). Both of my kids have gained self-confidence and learn on a daily basis the importance of discipline and being respectful. I also noticed other students are very supportive of each other and go the extra mile to ensure new students are comfortable and encouraged. I am sure this environment is a result of both Senseis teachings and how they run their program. Any student would benefit from this school. I highly recommend it.

I discovered tokon when my old sensei suggested I go there due to her moving away, and at first I didnt want to do it. Then, I started to warm up to all the people and I gained new friends that I now consider family. A few years later I started competing and Tokon shaped me into the warrior I am now.

When it comes down to it, Martial Arts classes are about the Sensei. Sensei Marcus and Sensei Christina are dedicated to their students, pushing them in understanding their (the students) abilities and excellence. I couldnt imagine better mentors. As a matter of fact, when faced with the choice to move out of the area, Tokon played a major factor in the decision. Thats how great they are at what they do!

My son enrolled in this karate school over the summer. I am so happy we found this dojo. Kyle was really excited to try something new. I assumed he would have fun for a little while but eventually get bored. I was sure he would tell me it was taking up all of his video game playing time. To my surprise, he has stuck with it. He prefers to come to the dojo rather than play minecraft. He is even preparing for his first tournament. Sensei Marcus and Sensei Christina have been wonderful. They make sure he is performing correctly and that he gives 100%. In addition to teaching the physical aspect, they also teach the respect and discipline that is involved. They have taught him so much already. He is using the knowledge not only in the dojo but in his everyday life as well. I will not take Kyle anywhere else for training. I began practicing Shotokan Karate in the 1980s and (unfortunately) went on a long break in the 1990s. As it turned out, the break was too long. It took me a while to get started again. Mainly, because I was not able to find a Dojo that matched my expectations. Well, to make it short: I found it in Tokon!!! Senseis Christina and Marcus, the owners of Token Martial Arts, are great: Not only are they skillful Shotokan Masters, they also do have expertise in various exercise modalities. Their Dojo is well equipped for workouts and Karate training. But, most importantly, Christina and Marcus are wonderful people - it is a pleasure to train under them and watch them work with both adults and children alike!!! I could train in Dojos that are significantly closer to me, but Token is definitely worth the longer drive! I can only recommend it!
