Clean and very safe place for a shelter. Run by a great Case Manager. Kind and encouraging. Not just a place to stay. They have a program to help homeless women get on their feet and into their own housing. Only problem was food. They gave us bags of lunch meat sandwiches, chips and orange juice or soda. They had a conln
As I sit here in the comfort of my own home, running a business of my own (Kendras Tender Touch Specializing In Peer Support Specialist/Personal Care Assistant). I came across a young lady that needed housing assistance and I looked up Helen Wright and Lord and behold I saw my picture on the Helen Wright Web-Site.. I was amazed !! I never forgot where I came from. I was so proud. I was once addicted to drugs, homeless, broken and wanted a change in my life for the better. And Helen Wright is where it all started. I got honest with myself and I knew the struggle was not going to be easy. The staff Ms. Dawn, Mrs. Brenda and a few others feed, clothed, and loved on me until I loved myself again. they have me information on Drug addiction, housing, jobs, counseling and I worked them to the best of my ability. They inspired me and did not judge me. I felt like I was home when I was there. I allowed HELP, to HELP ME. I set goals for myself and until this day I have accomplished those goals along with new ones. I come back to the Helen Wright Center to encourage other women who have fallen or just ran out of luck to be encouraged and I know that if I could do it they can too. I Became an example. I am now the PROUD Owner and Operator of: Kendras Tender Touch. I would like to THANK, The Helen Wright Center For playing a vital role in bringing The Real Kendra Cureton into the light and out of darkness.. Amen, Amen, Amen... I Am Forever Grateful !!!
I was told I could go to this shelter as a safe place for a couple of nights a couple of months ago. The facility is in need of a makeover, especially the bathrooms, but all was good. However I observed the staff member Evelyn being extremely rude and nasty to most of the ladies there including myself. She does not need to be in that position if she cant treat all people fairly. All other staff was fair, however I did not stay as long as I needed to because Evelyn kept yelling and talking down to others. This is a place to help people in need.
I am currently staying at the Helen Wright center and its a blessing to me having somewhere to stay. Being able to sleep and have somewhere to eat everyday. Mrs kitty and Mrs evelyn are the best staff here very nice and always making sure you got what you need. And the staff is awesome

I HAVE HOPE and GOALS and DIGNITY AGAIN.! MY CASE WORKER MS. D. Is AWESOME & Has GUIDED ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION, towards having A PLACE Called HOME AGAIN! THE Referral TO THE HOUSING PROGRAMS & Funding for Someone like me, R All in Place.U just have to do your part. Your Struggle can be Overcome with the RIGHT ATTITUDE ! U HAVE TO BE WILLING TO BE HUMBLE & Realize Where U r At in Life. And APPRECIATE WHAT YOU R RECEIVING! YOU HAVE FOOD, A Bed to sleep in A Hot Shower. You Must Be GRATEFUL FOR WHAT U HAVE & Need . NOT Just u want. All that will Come in Time. Your Blessings are What U Need to See! If you Continue to HELP YOUR SELF, YOU WILL MAKE IT.! WE MUST DO THIS TO NOT GET WHAT WE HAVE BUT TO GET WHAT WE WANT. THANK YOU MS. DAWN, FOR GIVING ME ANOTHER CHANCE. !! MUCH LOVE FROM MY HEART TO ALL OF YOU AT HELEN WRIGHT WHO MAKE IT POSSIBLE AGAIN FOR ME, SINCERELY, ANGELA
Even though I ended up not needing to come here, I called to see if any beds were available and asked what the process was and I spoke with Ms. Shannon and I was extremely sad and at my wits end and not only was she kind but she made me laugh!!!! She made me fee like she cared about my situation and brought me some light to my sadness! And for that I appreciate this place and if I ever get back down I will definitely be coming here because to have staff like her I know its love here!!!!
Where do I began? All the staffs and volunteers were my guided angels. Ms.Kitty, thank you, I appreciate you in so many ways, you are truly a blessing to all of these ladies. A force to be reckoned with. Ms.Evelyn, is a cool person, down to earth, and she has a soft side, but tough love is needed. Case Manager, Very professional. During my stay, I met some smart ladies in the shelter, but sometimes we fall, and we do get up, not sure how many times, but some ladies do stand again. Thanks again.. Ladies live, life and enjoy, theres another day..
Too much to write.
They will help you.
My experience here, has been nothing but positive results. Looking forward to a better out look on my life. Thanks to the Helen Wright Center.
If you have no place to sleep they will do their best to assist you with shelter. We all need to raise money for a larger facility so more single women can be assisted. Churches amd other Organizations donate meals and other mich needed items. Yet more is still needed.
This is the most racist place I have ever encountered. If you are white, find another place. The favoritism is disgusting. The guests are fine, it is the horrendous staff. Evelyn is not fit to work with people. Kitty Banks lied to me repeatedly, unaware that I have great intelligence and insight. She turned out to be a total fraud. Id rather sleep under a bridge than deal with this nasty racist farce.
Stayed for a month and a half. I went to complete survival mode. You get your own roll of toilet tissue. My first night, the staff broke me off some tissue for use. I cried. I was also given some kind of paper towel to use as towel after my shower. The staff have no human service skills and talk down to you. Mind you I came in there with a job and left with two jobs working seven days a week. The favoritism is sickening. The house manager needs to go. The case managers, eh! The weekend staff is the worst with the exception of one. I never felt so broken. The house mascot, Tammy is a weak trailer trash mess. Shes loud, boisterous and truly uneducated but she is allow to be the worst volunteer and have the nerve to complain and act like she is the big cheese. She coughed all night. She needs to be vaccinated! I think she lives there, ha ha!! No class and knows nothing about being a lady. Shes brings the moral down in that place. She needs to be toss out! I was lucky to sanitize my bed with tea tree oil to stave off the bed bugs and also bought my own sheets, pillow and towels and blanket. This place is truly a crab barrel. Get out as fast as you can so not to catch a case!! Watch out for the theives too!!
I enjoy serving the women there an praying with them an for them.i am a people person.
I think I stayed here maybe 4 hours. At the time I worked night shift so the place didnt benefit me at all. To have to leave at 8 am and cant return until 4 pm. 🤔🤔🤔 Where was I supposed to go and sleep? The place could be cleaner. I never returned. Its just not for me. My coping skills are horrible.
Supervisor was so wonderful when I went to volunteer for my job it was so beautiful to help others for the hurricane
If you walk, run, jog, drive, etc. pass this place to go downtown. Do not do it no more especially If you got kids. One of these people asked me can she touch my child while I was going for my morning walk. HELL NO!!!... The lady got mad at me and started acting crazy. I dont care but no stranger is going to touch my child.
They provide the things you need and offer a great program and keep you safe
They threw a fit about me wearing pajama pants outside of the dorm. ITS A HOMELESS SHELTER, not a 5 star restaurant. Why are the homeless getting kicked out for not following a dress code that they never had before?
This is a facility that helps u get back on ur feet.there r rules 2 follow and u may not like them but its necessary.it is what u make of it.tha majority of tha staff r compassionate and loving.they r a good atmosphere 2 get ur life 2gether
Theres only 2 things good about the Helen Wright Center1. You get a bed (infested with bed bugs)2. You get a shower in the morning and one at night.Other than that, I found the staff to be traumatically rude and incompetent. Do not expect to receive any help with housing referrals or drug treatment referrals unless you so happen to be a staff favorite. The Helen Wright Center staff tends to promote cronyism and favoritism. It is usually the staff in combination with the in-group favorites who receive the most assistance, even though everyone is working hard to achieve their goals.Think of the classic movie Annie, where you have Ms. Hannigan and the orphanage staff pretending to care about the residents while in front of visitors and donations crews, but behind closed doors, the staff is rude, inhumane and very disrespectful to homeless residents. So if you have been displaced or chronically homeless, Ive been in your shoes, I know that you feel broken, but do not expect for anyone at this place to build you up. That only happens to a chosen few. If you have a vehicle, you are better off parking somewhere safe and sleeping in your car. You can take showers at the YMCA if you have income, they will go by your income. The positive reviews in the review section are the exception. I remember Kendra and almost laughed when I read her review Kendras Tender Touch. I am proud of her, but if she really cared, she would acknowledge that she also witnessed poor staff behavior. She would also apologize for verbally attacking a sick female with Lupus, whom she verbally abused for simply not knowing how to care for her Lupus outbreak. If only she had a Tender Touch and some idea of patient care during her stay, maybe she would of had more empathy for a woman suffering from Lupus. She is on the cover and received help and referrals because she remained a favorite aiding in the demeaning of and dehumanization of other residents. (real talk) But I believe everyone can change for the better and I am happy she is clean and serving as an example. Many of the women at the Helen Wright Center, end up homeless due to domestic abuse and mental illness. Some of the women suffer unknowingly from depression, mood disorder, schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, paranoia and various personality disorders. Some of the elderly women suffer from early stage dementia, arthritis, high blood pressure and diabetes. Yet, these women are still expected to behave normally and turn into Merry Maids completing hour long chores mopping corridors, scrubbing toilets and shower stalls as well as tons of dirty plates and cups regardless to how well they feel. You have to pay where you lay right? But theres no real appreciation for the labor these women provide.Anyway, I am not speaking from bitterness or brokenness. I am just speaking from experience. Every experience will be different. Luckily, I was able to find assistance through other means that didnt require for me to become a favorite and God blessed me in ways I never imagined, I am humble and not here to brag. Yet, I will never forget this place and how I had to rebuild my self-esteem after leaving the Helen Wright Center.Enter at your own risk, be grateful for the bed and showers as suggested by the staff in the reviews and dont expect much from the staff unless you are a favorite. God Bless and be SAFE
I am in need of a shelter for the first time. I am really scared and disabled waiting for a hearing for disability. I cant walk a lot. Do we have to leave for the day then come back? Can someone please tell me what the situation is on that or anything else I should know?.
