The team at Tuffy Portage is awesome.If I could rate them more than 5 stars I would.They got my Ford Escape into their shop quickly, and they kept me informed of what was needed and why it was needed.Every time Ive been there theyve done the job right, on time, and at a price that was very affordable.If you or your family or friends have a car that needs service give Tuffy a call.They go above and beyond because they REALLY do care about their customers.

Staff are friendly and courteous, however, a $400.00 estimate turned into an $1100 bill; They informed my niece her battery was dead, they had to jump it several times, and for another $200.00+ theyd replace it. We didnt do the replacement, drove the car for about 40 minutes and its been starting just fine. These are the facts; draw your own conclusions.

Every time I come here for work on my Cadillac, I’m treated with professionalism and respect. Pricing is fair, expectations are up front and very reasonable. This is one of the better shops I have been to! Everyone was great the techs were very knowledgeable and understood what I was asking and did a great job. They needed my vehicle overnight and allowed me to use there loaner car which was super helpful! There price is exactly what I expected for the work. I would feel confident recommending them to any friends and family and will be back for more work.

He and front end Gave me options of what was important now and what could potentially wait and the pros and cons of doing either decision. Went over cost and options as well. I thought the days of taking advantage of women at a mechanic were long past. Tuffy in Portage MI proved that not to be the case. When returning from a fun family function our van broke a serpentine belt on Friday evening outside of Portage on the way back to our home in Traverse City. The van was towed to Tuffy where I was assured that it would be looked at first thing in the morning. We went to a hotel and made the best of it. After waiting until late into the afternoon on Friday Tuffy called to inform me that the cost to repair the van would be $1800.00. This seemed very high and I asked what the bare minimum to get back on the road would be. Emily the lady at the desk at Tuffy stated it could go down to $1300.00 telling me that they could skip replacing the radiator. I called the male half and informed him of the cost and he told me to not let them touch anything further. He then called them and told them to hold off on fixing anything until they heard from him. After consulting with our trusted mechanic (who knows the van very well) we found out that Jake’s suspicions were valid and Tuffy was trying to take advantage of a woman and replace and repair things that had nothing to do with getting the van road worthy. Jake called and spoke with Emily and was able to get the quote down to $699.00. They were trying to replace many items (radiator, hoses etc) that had less than 79,000 miles on them. We are blessed in that we can afford to repair anything that goes wrong with any of our vehicles. If this would have happened to a person that did not have the availability of information, and money, they would have paid for this totally unnecessary and flagrant rip off bill. This whole organization should be ashamed of themselves! Beware of this place!Follow up after the response below.:I really dont see how Emily or Rick King can sleep at night with this kind of shady business practice. This is still Jake Rossi Meghans partner writing. When I took the van into my mechanic he informed me that the AC system was charged, that Tuffy had unplugged the relay to the compressor (adding to their estimate) for work that did not need to be done. I found out that Tuffy mechanics get paid on commission and this is not an unusual practice to sabotage something and then pretend to have fixed it. I spoke with the owner (Rick KIng) and he was fully aware of the situation and complicit in it. I would have had the van towed and repaired elsewhere however I was afraid they would sabotage it quite frankly. Emily writes that the van is 19 years old which is true however this van is taken out of the garage for family trips only. It has 70K miles on it and has never seen snow with not a spot of rust. It has been extremely well cared for. We took it to Key Largo for spring break last year and we will take it to the keys again this spring. We are taking it to the UP this week for a family trip to my parents cabin. To add some icing on the cake I see Tuffy Portage is a big veteran supporter. I am a 2 tour combat veteran of the United States Marine Corps with an outstanding service record I dont feel very supported by this mistreatment. If this is how they treat me I would hate to see how they treat anyone else. I would avoid using this place for anything!!!!!As you can see from these estimates they were trying to swindle money! here is the proof. I would like hear how they are going to explain their way out of this??

I went in for a last minute oil change during the week. They were busy, but made time for the oil change right when I came in. The techs were quick. The front desk staff were super helpful and kind. I had a filter that needed to be changed as well. The way the front desk staff asked me if I wanted to replace it was easy and they didnt pressure me. They were just nice and real. Would recommend based off this one experience! Would go back! They were great.

WARNING!!!! Tuffy Auto Center at 7027 S. Westnedge, Portage, MI 49002 doesnt install parts properly. I had them replace my wheel bearing and hub assembly and they used regular washers instead of the proper spacers suggested. My truck started making horrible screeching noises months later due to the assembly hitting my brake rotor. Sounds safe? It isnt. I took the parts into them after being replaced at a reputable auto shop and they washed their hands of any responsibility. I guess customer safety isnt high on their list. I transport my entire family in my car. I spent over $1000 on the initial repair and had to pay an additional $600+ to get it fixed. Tuffy locally and corporate both did nothing and hid behind their warranty fine print. I ADVISE ALL TO GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. IF THEY CAN DO IT ONCE THEY HAVE DONE IT TO OTHERS. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY. All I asked is for them to pay my repair bill. Disappointed customer.

One of the best auto service centers I have ever been to, and I have been to a lot. The customer service was excellent! Talked to Todd, who was great! And he was able to squeeze me in pretty short notice. The price was very fair, and over all Im a happy customer. Will definitely be going back.

Theres no need to.Every single staff member that I have interacted with has been friendly and, most importantly, honest and practical. I have never felt pressured into any repairs, and I so appreciate the time that the staff takes to explain exactly what is going on with my car.Todd, in particular, is extra helpful (and a car encyclopedia in human form). He took the time to carefully listen to my description about an electrical issue in my car, ask clarifying questions, and thoroughly explain what could be done before booking me for an appointment. Wow. This place was actually referred to me by the place that did my auto body work after an accident. Super friendly and honest. The last time I went in, they could have charged me much more because of what I believed was the issue, and they didnt even try. Price on par with most service centers, but they dont try to look for things to charge for. Talking with people in the reception area, and they have all had similar experiences and the same loyalty.

Being new to the area we chose Tuffy based upon their online reviews and Im extremely glad that we did. T at the front desk was super kind and friendly and took the time to give us a list of options that we could choose from based upon manufacturer recommendations, tech recommendations or the bare minimum that we would need to keep the vehicle up and running at the lowest cost. We felt no pressure to purchase anything and were really impressed with the quality of work. They showed us the parts that were replaced and seemed very concerned that my wife feel comfortable driving our Jeep Cherokee. I could not have been more pleased with our overall experience and we will continue to be customers at this car doctor.

The staff is helpful and professional, and I had my car back within 48 hours. I cant speak to the quality of the work or parts used, but everything seems great and my car is running fine.However, like many of the reviewers point out, this place is very expensive! $1,100 to replace 2 struts and complete an alignment is a bit outrageous. If you dont mind paying several hundred dollars more than fair market value of the cost of repairs this is the shop for you.

At 60 years old, Ive been to plenty repair facilities over the years. I stopped here once just to get a good price on an oil change and Ive been coming for all repairs on both our cars ever since. Took in my Cadillac escalade for steering suspension inspection after going to 3 other places and not getting much resolution including cadillac. I went into Tuffy and worked with Mark he was professional, knowledgable, and went above and beyond to explain his recommmendations and findings. He took us in the shop to show us under the vehicle and explain and point out what he found. I will def be going back to work with Mark again!

Being new to the area, I was so happy to find an auto service center that I could trust and rely on. Rick and Emily are just over-the-top with their customer service. Horrible. My vehicle had to be towed here due to an electrical problem that wouldnt allow my vehicle to run. First, the employees at Tuffy couldnt figure out how to move my vehicle into their shop stall when the vehicle was dead, which eventually took them an entire day to do. Then they couldnt figure out what was wrong with my vehicle and tried to tell me that it was a bad battery, which it wasnt. Then they tried telling me the problem was due to a loose battery cable connection, which it wasnt. Then they tried telling me that the battery cable fittings were stripped in the battery, which it wasnt. Then they found a blown in-line fuse, which they replaced. They ended up putting a new battery in my blazer anyway with a new fuse and charged me close to $400 for it. The battery didnt need to be replaced for it was a new battery and they charged me way beyond the reasonable labor time and costs associated with changing a friggin 25 cent fuse. I do not like giving bad reviews and understand that everyone has off days, but these gentleman were totally incompetent. If I had my own garage and lived nearby I would have done the repairs myself. I feel like I was taken advantage of considering the circumstances that I was in, which was from out of town, broken down vehicle, towed to Tuffy, and needed it to be repaired quickly. They new all of this and unfortunately I got stuck with the short stick in my opinion. You may be better off going to a local, family owned mechanic shop or a car dealership, which have gotten tremendously better these days with their labor costs.

Was in town for a wedding and my wiper fluid wasnt coming out which is a huge problem in the middle of a Michigan winter obviously. Called ahead and they said bring it right in no problem. They saw us right away on a busy Saturday and fixed the issue within 20 minutes. When we asked how much we owe they said have a nice day and enjoy your wedding and sent us out the door without paying a dime for their service. Very friendly, nice people. Thank you!

My visit to Tuffy Kalamazoo was impromptu rather than planned, when my exhaust fell off my vehicle when I was driving down Stadium. I walked in not knowing what to expect (being a relatively new car owner), but I was impressed with their prompt, courteous service. They took a look, gave an accurate estimate and explained what they repaired in terms I could understand and despite my inexperience they were kind to my budget by not trying to sell me a new part where an old one would do. The repair was done in a timely fashion, and when I left, my car was once more purring like a kitten. 5 out of 5 stars, would definitely recommend them.

Car started overheating on the way back to Chicago on Sunday. Brooke and the techs were open and honest about what they could do that same day and were able to do a coolant diagnostic right away. After adding coolant, they were unable to find a leak and sent me on my way without pushing any unnecessary work.I subtracted one star because the coolant diagnostic was $50, while the Sears auto center around the corner quoted $30. If you have the time and want to scrimp, it might be worth it to check around.I was just glad to be able to get back home to Chicago that day.

So What started out as frustrating experience with are new to us suv breaking only after just a month of owning it,was turned into finding a good quality,honest family centered mechanic shop that we will use from here on out!! Rick was friendly with me and my kids and made sure we were taken care of. Also so was Emily who worked the desk. Every one there is very nice. On top of that the mechanic that worked on my suv his name was Shawn! I can’t say enough how straightforward and honest he was about the work that needed to be done. He explained everything so I could understand it. He made sure that I was able to see what was actually broken and what it would take to fix it. He even gave me pointers for things to pay attention to for certain problems so I have a better understanding of my suv! On top of that they did everything they could to correct things that were Not right. The guys and gal at tuffy will definitely take care of you and treat u like family! Shawn you were awesome! If I could give this shop 0 stars I would. Been going to tuffy since I was 16 years old and bought my first car, being that I’m a high school student and saving money is already hard enough with bills I took my ford to this shop in hopes the work would be done correctly. Right off the bat my car needed a $500 some odd dollar repair which I had done -_- I’ve spent well over $1k here and the issues I had fixed bringing my car in are still relevant months later on. Everything you guys have fixed has honestly been put on wrong or they are cheap parts. I will never ever ever allow tuffy to replace my car again and I’m heart broken that I ever took my business here, to this day the “ball joint that costs 350 dollars to replace is just as bad as when I took it in. You guys stink and honestly I wish I had my money back but it’s whatever.

Edit: Im going to rescind my initial review because they have done right by me and got my car back into running condition and worked very hard to get there. Its still more expensive than Id like, but they worked with me on that.

These guys know what theyre doing in here. They explain in great detail what the problems are with your car and what they need to do to fix it. They have great staff and prices are low. Your services are completed quickly as well. I definitely recommend them.

I was traveling with dogs and in a jam as I blew a tire and the spare couldnt be taken off. I got a tow to this Tuffy and they got the spare off and on my way in like 30 minutes. Very appreciative of the fast courteous service. Rick new I was in a pickle and saved the day. The young service tech that helped me was very polite and even went out of his way to help me with the dogs. Great service guys! Thank you!

To find a trustworthy, honest, and knowledgeable mechanic is like finding a needle in a haystack! I stumbled upon Tuffy 2 years ago while looking for a competitive bid for a brake job for my wifes car, I honestly had no intention of doing business with them, but when I met them (Brandon and Emily) I was taken back by their honesty regarding the job (doing what needed to be done instead of recommending I replace everything), their customer service, and finally their pricing, which was fair and competitive! I recommend giving them a shot for your next mechanical car need and letting THEM prove to you why Ill never go anywhere else!

I was traveling through Kalamazoo on my way to Ann Arbor when my car broke down. I was calling around all over the place, and the folks at Tuffy worked hard to get me taken care of. They were able to fit me in last minute and get the parts I needed on short notice. The staff are wonderful to deal with, and their prices are great. I definitely know where Im going if I end up with car trouble in Kalamazoo.

Todd and the staff at Tuffy on Stadium Drive are great. I had my girlfriends car towed there when it would not start. The resulting repair was so minor, they quickly fixed the car and checked the tires with no charge to us. Thank you Tuffy for great customer service! We will be repeat customers.

The staff were very friendly and helpful! They were able to get my car right in to figure out what was wrong with it. When it was going to take a while to fix it, they even drove me home so that I didnt have to stay and wait. They did an awesome job and Ill be returning for any future work that I might need done.

I have dealt with several automotive shops in the area but the customer service in this one is outstanding. They listen and, better still, they hear what I am saying. I have had bad experiences with a few automotive shops in the area but I will be coming back to this one for my car repairs.The staff is knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. I dont feel I am interrupting them when I ask questions. I know nothing about cars other than to put gas into them and have them checked. I had my oil changed and they gave me a list of things that I needed to have done to my car to include a print out of suggested maintenance.They seem to bend over backwards to help you maintain your vehicle and are reasonably priced. I would strongly recommend them.

I went in one morning just as they opened because my Truck made an awfull sound when turning.I had no appointment but they took the time to check my truck and diagnose it.After finding the issue, they took care of it right there and then.I was very impressed with the courtesy level and friendliness of everyone there.I will continue taking my vehicle there for any issues because I had such a great experience there!

The employees at Tuffy are always friendly and efficient and timely with service. They tell you exactly whats wrong with your car using common language and are available to answer any questions right away. My cars starter was not working and I was not able to turn on my car. I had my car towed to Tuffy and they got me in right away and had my car fixed within a few hours. They treated me like a valued customer and that is a great thing!

Rick, Emily, and the friendly team at Tuffy full service Auto Service Center are amazing. The service goes far above and beyond expectations with customized service for drop off and pick up, the ability to get towing reimbursed from a service program they offer for free, and you always wind up with an honest assessment on your vehicle which gives a paper pusher like me a lot of comfort. I highly recommend this company for all of your familys vehicle needs.

Extremely knowledgeable. All the guys were extremely patient with me as well as very helpful. They treated me as if theyve known me forever and gave me insight on a lot of things and what I should do. Not only did they express their concern but they also showed their concern which I appreciate them for greatly. A person especially a woman doesnt feel comfortable with mechanics but these guys made me comfortable to have service done as a young woman without male help. Anytime I have an issue with my vehicle, I immediately call Tuffy. Their team is always so helpful and easy to do business with. I never have to wait long to hear back about whats going on with my car or to get the problem fixed. I never have doubts about the answers or service I receive and I always feel good when I leave.

They wanted 500 + to fix my car and they said that was just to get started. Went home had the car towed replaced the fuel pump relay which was 14 bucks and it started right up. Over $100 just to look at my car. This place is a scam like most quick fix shops. On the flip side Brooke the front desk lady was very nice.

Had some exhaust work done. They came in about $800 less than the dealership. Got my estimate quick and the work done fast. Good customer service. We’ll work with again.

Got my AC condenser replaced here. Very happy with the price and quality of work. Would definitely recommend. Every other place quoted me over $800, whereas Tuffy replaced it for $560

Great customer service. Extremely overpriced, but I think thats a trend with auto-care chains. Try and find someone local instead. They will give you much better prices for the same quality work.

I had a great experience with Tuffy! I went in for an oil change. It was so great to see Rick out in the Lobby interacting with the customers, answering all kinds of questions that that had. This is a female friendly auto shop. I know nothing about cars and they explained everything to me in language that I could understand and they did not make me feel incompetent for not knowing anything about cars. They recently did some work on my car. They tried to overcharge me by quite a bit but I was otherwise fairly happy. Today my tire came off while I was on the highway. It was clearly their fault and they should have taken responsibility. Instead they denied that they made a mistake and after I threatened to sue them they finally told me they would look at it. Once my car got to the shop they told me they would look at it on Monday (today is Saturday and my car got to them well before they closed so to me it seemed like they were just trying to give me a hard time, especially because all the mechanics went over and looked at my car when it got to the shop).On top of the poor work they did that could have potentially caused a lot of harm to people (including myself), they also lied to me and appeared to intentionally give me a hard time. If they would have taken responsibility for their actions and been polite I would have no problem giving them a good review, but they couldnt even manage to be polite.TL;DR: They put myself and others in danger, lied, were rude and unhelpful, and seemed to be intentionally giving me a hard time. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND DOING BUSINESS AT A DIFFERENT LOCATION.*If they change their tune on Monday and decide to act like decent human beings I will probably come back and give them more stars, but until then this is what they get (it would be 0 stars if I could).

Overall, I had a very positive experience with Tuffy! I am from out of town and needed my brakes checked before I could go home. They made an appointment for me that worked around my conference that I was in town for. Upon arrival, it took 40 minutes for them to take my car into the shop. However, once they took it in, they did a thorough check and provided an honest evaluation of which issues were urgent and which could wait. They stayed open almost an hour past closing time on a Friday afternoon to finish my car so I could go home that night. I would highly recommend their services in the Kalamazoo area!

I bought an old car (21 years old) and I had gone to 2 different mechanics for small issues. People in Tuffy were the only ones who were honest enough to recommend me to get rid o my car and buy a new one. Please note that they probably would have gotten money from me if they hadnt told me that. They inspected the car at no cost. Very nice people

I called yesterday to get my car looked at since the windshield wiper fluid wasnt working, they got me in the same day. When I arrived they fixed the problem and made sure I understood what was wrong. A couple months ago I went to this same location for an oil change and to have my tires rotated, I cant say enough about these guys. Theyve made me feel respected and not intimidated (which being a women and going to the mechanic can be a little daunting). I know nothing about cars but when I walk out of this location I always know what the problem was and how they fixed it! There my go-to for all things related to my car!

The wiper linkage went out on my Alero on a Saturday on a holiday weekend. They were not only open and able to fix it, they were happy to do so. Other companies said they couldnt fit me in for a few days. Also, they asked how I wanted to be contacted (via text) and then actually used that means to contact me. Its rare to find a business that actually follows through in that way. Very friendly people, prompt and friendly service (even on a holiday weekend!)—highly recomended!

I was disappointed with the presentation of my problems and explanations of what the repairs mean. Although it wasnt malicious, I think the customer service could have been more sensitive to a man who is OK with not knowing a single thing about cars.As expected, they found an additional $1500 worth of repairs. While I cant say they were wrong, the overall feel and vibe has left me seeking out a second opinion.ON a positive note, they recharged my AC and rotated tires for the amount I expected and in less time that was quoted.

I havent had much done so far, but these guys are true blue.The reason I wanted to switch from Uncle Eds is because I was tired of being relentlessly upsold.These guys will not try to sell you anything you dont absolutely need, and they will explain why you need what you need. They are down to earth and personable, and for once I didnt feel totally in the dark about my car. I felt like they were talking to a person and not just a customer, and looking to help me instead of sell me something. Also, not bad pricing!Particular shout out to Todd and Chris, both very helpful, very down-to-earth guys.

Chris at the Stadium Drive Tuffy had the problem with my car diagnosed and fixed within a day. Quality repairs and quality customer service. I recommend Tuffy over any dealership for sure.

Tuffy is the only place that I take my car. They do great work and are easy to talk to. They do a good job of explaining what needs to be done, the process, how to avoid problems, and answer any questions that one may have. I recommend everyone that has any car problems to check out Tuffy.

I had a very horrible experience at Tuffy in Kalamazoo. I took my car in for an oil change and they informed me that my my oil pan was leaking and that I needed a new gasket. They also suggested that I replace the whole oil pan due to a few rust spots. They gave me a quote for the repairs around $500. I was a little suspicious, since I hadnt noticed it leaking oil before and I thought the quote was a little pricey. I decided to take my car into the Honda dealership for a second opinion and they informed me that someone had left the oil plug loose and that this was the reason why my car was leaking oil. I can only conclude that they intentionally did this so they could charge me for repairs that I did not need. I was shocked and very disappointed. I strongly recommend taking your car somewhere else.

I have gone to this Tuffy for the past 4 years that I have lived in Kalamazoo. I have brought my car in for basic things like an oil change as well as bigger mechanical issues. They are always helpful and able to fix my car in a timely manner.

BEST car repair shop in all of the Kalamazoo and Portage area!I cannot say enough good things about this place. I have been to, I swear, almost every repair shop in Kalamazoo and Portage because I have had all sorts of issues with my car.I have been scammed, lied to, etc, in the past by places and told I needed hundreds even thousands of dollars in repairs I did not truly need.Tuffys employees were honest, quick, and polite. Not only did they explain everything to me in detail, they also brought me into the repair shop while my car was hitched up and showed me the issues and what needed to be fixed. They were all so polite and helpful, I couldnt believe I had never gone to Tuffys before.Everything was done on time and actually even early, and one of the employees even volunteered to stay after close to work on my car so that I could have it the same evening.I recommend this place to everyone now and will definitely be coming back!!!

Wheres a good place to get ripped off...thats a Tuffy !Brought in my own muffler and tips, just needed them installed with an extra 5 foot of tubing... $436 total for the estimate....Pass on that !

I pulled up at the fitness center on Stadium dr not too far from the shop....and all of a sudden Im dragging some metal piece under my car. (Embarrassing loud scrapping sound) I had no idea what it was but I knew it couldnt be good. I drove very slowly to the nearest shop which just happened to be Tuffy. A nice guy by the name of Rob looked at my car...found out it was the heat Shield. He got it back onto my car and out the door quickly on a Saturday! But the greatest part was when I took out my wallet to pay.....he said no charge. GREAT SERVICE.
