This is probably the best bang-for-your-buck gym in Philadelphia. Staff at all hours are incredibly kind, well-spoken, and helpful -- if you have a problem with any part of the facility or another member they are extremely fast to respond. The facilities are incredibly clean and well-maintained -- if a piece of equipment goes down it is fixed, at worst, within a day or two. The gym itself has everything you would need in terms of equipment even as an advanced weightlifter/fitness enthusiast. The community of members is exceptional as well. I have never belonged to a commercial gym with such a friendly, supportive atmosphere. If you are looking for a good gym at a reasonable price this is the one to join. I usually do not take the time to write reviews, but this place definitely deserves the one I am giving it.
Andrew and Vinny create such an enjoyable space. Vinny gives me a warm greeting every morning. Andrew works tirelessly to keep the space clean and sanitary. Especially in the current climate cleanliness is important to me. I really appreciate Andrew and Vinny.
Great equipment but had too many wanna be tough guys. A weirdo there said “I’ve been going here for ten year and we don’t use the machines for more than 30 mins.” Who cares though?
This is a great gym, especially for the price. Clean and it has all the equipment you could need, plus super friendly and helpful staff
Retro Fitness spring garden is a good choice. I have been there more than one year. Just hoping the staffs can let all the members strictly follow “musk wearing” rule during this time. I saw most members wearing the musk during the training, which is great. But there are still one or two do not wear the musk at all sometimes and nobody ask them to wear the musk. The virus could be easily spread by this way.
Huge gym with nice equipment and lots of floor space. Variety of free weights, cable machines, and plate loaded machines. Friendly staff and clean locker rooms as well.
There is professinal staff. And the best place for the workout.
Very kind staff. They handle health precautions significantly better than other gyms I have been to since COVID began. Bathroom and locker facilities are always clean. Parking available even for its location in Center City is also a plus. Love going here!
On 6/23/21 I went into the Retro fitness on Spring Garden location and bought a smoothie! I was in full Police Uniform and after buying the smoothie, I asked to use the restroom. Tamara who is a cashier, stated that only members could use their restroom even if you buy products from their gym. I asked to speak to the manager and I was told he was not in his office. A male came to the front and said you can use the bathroom at Dunkin Donuts! The workers there are very unprofessional and Dismissive! If the establishment is not willing to treat law enforcement with respect and dont want us buying their products, please post that sign in your windows!
The kids at the desk are very helpful courteous and attentive. The gym has a great energy from the clientele who work out there. I am glad I have a membership here.
This gym is the best gym Ive been to. The staff there are very polite, very respectful and extremely friendly and very very professional. The vibe of the gym is super comfortable and the best thing is every machine is clean and sanitized. I really love this gym, great people great staff very friendly environment to workout at💯💯💯💯💯💯💪🏾
Decent gym. Tried a free trial today and they had a line outside but it moved quickly. Plenty of cardio machines that werent being used. I do worry that when there isnt limited capacity during the pandemic, itd be hard to get to most of the weight machines downstairs because there was already a bit of a wait at most. I didnt see a bottle filling station, but things seemed modestly well-kept otherwise. There were a lot of accessories scattered around the floor near the cables and pulleys though. Handles, bars, etc. Machines were in good shape otherwise.
The owner of this gym comped me because he learned my son is in children’s hospital of Philadelphia as I’m a visitor in this city! Put this gym on your A list because their management is beyond compassionate and it’s a great fitness facility!
Fantastic gym. Love the smoothies and they’re equipment is top of the line. Price range is perfect, best bang for your buck you can get in the city. Fantastic area and best gym I’ve been to in Philly.
I paid 40+ dollars for this gym then got charge again for annual fee would not recommend this horrible gym really small dirty gym overpriced way to pack all the time terrible machines and weights. Cash grabbing gym will drain you for your money!
I’ve been coming to this gym since I moved to Philly and I love it. The staff is welcoming, they have a wide range of equipment and rooms, and they have a strong community. When COVID happened and they reopened they made excellent accommodations to make everyone feel safe and I always saw someone cleaning. I felt more comfortable here, in a bigger gym with more people, than I did at my apartments gym.
I used to love coming to the gym, but after witnessing a racially motivated verbal attack by one of the staff members against a guest, I will never return nor recommend this gym. Perhaps there is more to the story than I witnessed, but that is not an excuse for a Retro employee to use a derogatory term against anyone. Very disappointing Retro. Shame on you
Ive been going here since my other gym shut down in august due to covid. retro has been amazing. they are extremely responsible with headcount and cleaning. It was such a great stress relief to come work out here. I hope they make it through this mess.
Love it, parking could be closer but it is what it is. The staff is always nice and have been doing a excellent job during the pandemic.
Nice big place
Machines have been out of order for a while. Why during peak hours is a trainer and trainee taking up the entire dedicated weight room? Canceled membership today.I posted the above review three days ago. The owner posted the following response:Response from the owner 2 hours agoMatthew, were sorry to see that youve only checked in once this year so were not sure how you got the impression our machines are down for a long period. Were replacing the Leverage press (our only item down) on Wednesday as its on back order from the manufacturer. Additionally, the Small Group Training room is dedicated for trainers & trainees who pay a premium membership with scheduled session times, the same as our Spin & GroupX room. - Spring Garden Street Retro Fitness Management TeamToday, I returned to the gym for the 4th time in a week and took the two photos of the equipment which show the same condition that the equipment was in on August 13th, the first time I have been there in a while, on August 15th, and on August 16th. Today is the 20th. So these two pieces of equipment have been down for at least a week, maybe longer. So the response from the owner is false, the leverage press is not the only item down. The assisted dip and pull-up machine has had the under repair sign on it for at least a week.
Love this gym its a shame they have to close temporarily due to the new covid guidelines. Me and girlfriend love the staff here they do a great job keeping it clean and welcoming.
The staff at Retro is professional, knowledgeable and friendly. There is wide-range of equipment available, complete with a couple of deadlift platforms and a turf field. The only drawback is that this gym gets PACKED during peak hours. Since it next to Temple and the Community College, expect to find college students filling the gym at all hours of the day.
Great place, great staff, always clean. We needed that around here. Only gym around that is unbeatable
Great gym, clean during COVID, nice employees. Bro city but what can you do.
Nice place
Love it. My favorite gym in the city
I love this gym so much! The staff is SO friendly and they always make me feel welcome. Even if you dont have a membership, you should stop by and get a smoothie! Theyre sooooo good.
Grind time. Early mornings so far is the best time to work out. Whole gym to yourself. Very clean. Masks on at all times
Pros:As far as Retros go, this is a good gym with a range of equipment, friendly staff, and a good atmosphere. Plenty of squat racks and dumbbells up to 120. Theres also turf area (but it is usually reserved for classes during peak hours before covid)Cons:1) They are still allowing way too many people in at a time during covid (half-maximal capacity is still a very crowded gym)2) They should focus their spending more on fixing poor equipment and less on aesthetic renovations. 1-2 flat benches, the racked decline bench (especially), and the leg adductor are all lopsided beyond use, unless you want to develop form and muscle imbalances. The only free decline bench is very wobbly. The floor could also be the issue with the off-angled benches, in which case a rearrangement would help
Let me tell you about my Retro. Retro Fitness of Spring Garden customer service is unmatched from the front desk staff to the trainers and even management are awesome. I’ve been to a few different gyms since I started my fitness journey and there is no other gym like Retro. If something breakdown it’s either repaired, replaced, or upgraded and I’ve never seen that before. The owner’s are always looking for ways to improve or enhance your gym experience. The trainers will encourage you to dig deep and past your comfort zones. To put it simply I lovvvveeee my Retro.
Very nice gym staff was friendly and alot of equipment to work from i def enjoyed my visir
I love the young feel of the environment. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Everytime Im there I see the cleaning staff always cleaning on the floor and the locker room. Love it. Can get crowded at peak hours.
Ive only been at Retro for three weeks Ive been coming three times a week consistently. The staff and the members are super friendly and supportive. I love going to Strong and Team because it helps give me accountability and I get the attention I need. Ive been to gyms all over the city and this is the gym that meets my needs. Join Retro Spring Garden!
Perhaps the cheapest gym near Center City Philadelphia. Even though its cheap, it is a full gym with great hours and a friendly and responsive staff. Their equipment does not give off that brand new look like the more premium gyms do, but they are still very much usable and safe. I personally highly recommend. The cheapest, no-frills membership is about $20. For $20, this gym is definitely of great value. Also, a huge shoutout to the management team for constantly finding ways to diversify and improve on your services. Also, amazing job finding, hiring, and retaining talent. Throughout my time at Retro, Ive not met an employee that wasnt friendly/willing to help. Wishing you guys continued success!
Good location, nice and clean. Staff seems engaged and interested in helping the gym-goers. Ive taken 2 classes so far - hip hop dance and power yoga and both were great! Cant beat this gym for the price and location. Also the smoothie bar is a bonus!
Revising 5 star rating from when I joined, due to experiences with service. I purchased a membership for my college student daughter, who is tight on money, I wanted a place she could go and work out available. She went infrequently for 3 months and every time she went she showed the person at the counter her new member email. Everyone just said go in so no worries she went in. Her best friend collapsed from a seizure and determined he had a brain tumor that was cancer. For the next three months she finished college and took care of him daily. Now that he somewhat stable, she is getting back to life, but apparently not back to the gym. The counter person would not let her in when she showed her the email, saying she doesnt even now what she is trying to show her but if she didnt get a membership card, she will not be let in. No offer to get her one, no options, just my daughters problem to get herself a membership card. Feeling uncomfortable she would just leave. I called management to try to resolve this. She made the right choice by walking away, for she was right, it was just going to be a problem and frustration. The manager told me how easy it would be to get a membership card, so non of her people would have not just done it. He went on about this in an effort to make me wrong, like I was trying to pull something on him, the same feeling my daughter had. Not offering to get us membership or what we can do, just pointing out that his staff was right and did not turn her away. One of the times, she had friends with her. Then again to make it her fault he asked why she didnt ask for a manager. Then he laughed and asked how old she is that I am calling for her. Again I saw her point, walk away, there is no reason to deal with people like this. Funny enough he is the one who hung up on me. No attempt to address the situation I presented him, to attempt to offer a solution, as if my daughter and myself had wronged him, he yelled at me and hung up. But to the owners end, they have my money and will definitely keep charging me, so he will probably keep low skilled employees on staff. I think it will be worth the fight to get my money back, as so many of the other reviewers are also plagued by the bad management and customer service, which they feel they are not contractual obligated to provide, but we are contractually obligated to pay. I did follow up with an email reply to the Membership confirmation email telling of the situation, but have not heard back. I will keep an eye out to see if they do stand up . ? ! . >
Great gym! Clean facility, equipment is all functional and modern, membership is affordable, and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable! Best gym in the area
Excellent equipment. Supportive, friendly staff.
The staff is knowledgeable and helpful the atmosphere there is great everyone is serious about there workout. It is a two level gym with good equipment and a lot of different classes/personal training options to choose from. It does get crowded during peak times but I would still highly recommend retro fitness to anyone looking for a gym.
The gym is great! Many different types of people (jocks, seniors, weight losers, yogis) and a variety of equipment for all. You can find any type of equipment you could want. The gym is clean and equipment well maintained. The front desk staff is always friendly and the smoothies make for an occasional nice reward.
Entering into Retro, I am often pleasantly greeted with a smile and hey, how are you?. The staff at the front desk are very friendly and I have made small talk with many of them. At night, there is plenty of space to lift, stretch or do interval training. The equipment is cleaned, the culture of the gym is to maintain your work-out area well and there are often workers putting weights away and equipment where it belongs. A neat feature of the gym is when the front desk workers walk around with samples of protein shakes - this is awesome and definitely makes you think about purchasing something after your workout!
My daughter and I visited this gym about a month ago, and I just have to say that this place made us feel like we were right at home the second we walked in! The staff was so kind and the gym itself was my dream of what I think a gym should be! Awesome layout, sweet equipment, and a motivating atmosphere!! Well done!☺️ And on top of that, they have a fun place for your kiddos to be too!❤️ Thank you guys so much!
They do not value consumers, nor do they address any issues that arise within consumers. Some of their equipment is broken, and I was hurt when using, of course because I did not file a claim against them, due to minor injuries, they totally ignored my complaint, also the equipment is still broken!!!!
I went to this gym before COVID, and enjoyed going here then and enjoyed going some during COVID (current when this review was written). The gym is definitely following all of the right guidelines, and I felt safe with my mask on the entire time. In part, some of its left up to the customers to do their jobs - wipe down equipment after/before use, keep their masks on, etc. All of the employees looked like they were doing great. The last time I went they had a ton of signs up warning people to wear their masks, and I also appreciate their response here on Google. Its obvious this gym and their leadership very much care about safety and health - after all, gyms are to help people be healthy.I recently moved away from this gym, unfortunately, and had to cancel my membership. It would have taken me over 25 minutes to drive here, which would have added too much stress to my schedule. The people at the counter were extremely nice to me when I told them I had to cancel - Im sure its not a fun part of their day - and made it so easy. I didnt feel guilty at all, didnt have to fork over a ton of money, and honestly wish Retro Fitness had a location in South Philly!
Despite all the regulations and challenges following the virus, this gym continues to be well maintained, clean and safe. The staff is friendly and the owners are very involved (often there everyday). They make continued improvement to the facilities and the equipment. I highly recommend this gym
Friendly staff, unique equipment, clean and fresh facility. This is a great gym in itself, but especially for the price. Haven’t tried the classes yet, but they seem really good and I plan on doing so soon. Also a smoothie bar, which is a plus.
Really great support and willingness to work with you. For someone just getting back into the gym, Retro has fostered a good environment to support positive and healthy growth. Even for those whove already been long time members, they all say that if you stick with retro, youll see the results.
Rude staff, the parking garage is 3 blocks away
Listen, this is a fine gym. But the company who owns it and their business practices are clearly not customer friendly, and they are designed to take advantage of the payment structure so that you are basically billed two extra times after quitting. Annual dues of $40 are paid in March and they made two big announcements about the cancellation of gym amenities- the closing of the child sitting service and the removal of a member parking lot- conveniently within the time window that means if you want to cancel your membership because one of these things are vital to you, you have to pay your next bill AND the annual fee for a year when you will not be using the facility. That sucks. No issues with the staff, no issues with the equipment, but a big issue with having to pay triple my monthly bill on my way out the door.
The trainers, friendliness and the comaradeire. Its the first gym that I rest enjoy going to.
While placed on hold a Retro Spring Garden employee forgot to mute the call as she and a male co-worker mocked and humiliated me in a most immature and unprofessional manner. The incident was investigated and management ruled in my favor, apologized and dealt with things responsibly. Suffice it to say, Im no longer a member of Retro Fitness Spring Garden. However, I still cant knock the entire place because of one (or a few) bad experiences as during my time there I lost weight and learned some new stuff. I just really miss using the aqua massage beds and purchasing their smoothies though - those were so good!!
I’ve been a member of this gym since February 2018 and I love it! The staff is always welcoming and friendly when you walk in, the facility is clean and spacious and there’s a wide variety of equipment to use. I attend Strong or Team classes about 3-4 times a week and I’ve made significant progress toward my fitness goals. The group training makes working out fun and builds friendships, which makes it easier to keep up with a routine despite a busy schedule.
Love it here. Yes the staff is friendly and they remember you. There are a tons of different machines to choose from. I love the space and set up. The smoothies are delicious. They even have Retro Gear. You cant go wrong joining this gym. 👍🏾
Really nice gym. the trainers are friendly and knowledgeable. lol I keep suggesting that they need more classes for us older members but otherwise I love it. Its always clean
My second home! Great place with great friendly staff! The Team is an everyday joy for me!
A great gym. Has everything you need.It has a body building and family atmosphere.I absolutely love it here
Honestly an overall great experience... The staffing team is great, extremely nice and helpful with no hesitation to help.. fast pace but they make sure your needs are met.. one of the best things is the bathroom showers, THEY GET SO HOT IMMEDIATELY lol.. & clean too...the trainers are actually interested in my goals in becoming healthier and fit,, smoothie bar is outstanding, have yet to have a bad experience with the shakes,, just a great place for a low price...
The facility is nice. The workers range from pretty okay to really awesome (Bob, the owner is great). Lots of equipment to use and things to do. Sometimes its crowded but that can he easily circumvented with a little know-how. The protein shakes are great as well.
I wanted to take a moment to say how great the customer service is at Retro Fitness. Tahai, the general manager was very helpful regarding my membership when I explained that I had a hip fracture and was unable to use the club for an extended period of time. It is clear that Retro fitness values their members satisfaction and their reputation as the most popular fitness facility in the art museum area of the city. Aside from customer service, their smoothie station (not all smoothies/protein shakes, but most) are definitely Philly Dietitian Approved!
Best quality/price ratio in Philly. You have everything you need to workout.Employees are gentle and the spaces are always cleaned. The manager can be more educated and gentle, but overall its a good gym. Nothing else to say.
I have been a member of Retro Fitness for only a mere two months and I can say with 200% satisfaction that the equipment, the atmosphere, and, most importantly, the service has reached echelons that go beyond impeccable. Previous experiences at other gyms do not compare to the comfort level I have experienced and I can say without any apprehension or doubt that you would be a fool to not join this gym. The managers as well as the staff have exuded humility, empathy, and care for the customer that have made me feel right at home, and I only live two blocks away. If anyone were to request a recommendation as to which gym they should attend in the Philadelphia area, the only two words I will utter without hesitation will be, Retro Fitness.
This club is awesome. The staff is friendly and so helpful. They are always smiling when I walk in. The place is always clean and smells good. I have been a member of several gyms and by far Retro of Spring Garden is the best.
I cant speak for the gym as a customer but I can as a potential employee. I went in for an interview to teach yoga there today and when I went into the managers office another person who works there stopped him from coming into the office to do our interview and with me sitting RIGHT THERE brings over some other random gym goer and starts talking to the manager about hiring him to teach yoga when it was beyond obvious to me (as I was sitting there for the whole conversation) that this guy didnt even have his 200 hour registered yoga teachers accreditation. Not only that but I was just blown away at how unprofessional the manager was to blow me off and have this conversation right in front of me. I will make sure to tell all of my friends who are looking for yoga teaching opportunities to stay away from retro fitness.
I came in a couple weeks ago and wanted to get information about the gym and its amenities when the so-called General Manager who I didnt catch his name was rudely yelling at an employee he was pretty rude and his tone felt aggressive. He said he was the General Manager and proceeded to walk out the building. I was given a tour and I did like the gym and the person who gave me the tour he me told call him Jojo I thanked him for the information and the tour he gave me. I was given a great tour and was very kind he did apologize for the general managers behavior but I still didnt feel like joining anymore after witnessing that rude encounter with a manager.
Love this gym and its staff. Super friendly, super clean no matter when you walk in. The owner (Bob I believe his name was) is a genuine guy who wants everyone to enjoy being in the gym. They have several Texas power bars which is awesome because not many commercial gyms do and for anyone training for powerlifting youll definitely enjoy the amount of space and freedom.
I use this gym mostly for the cardio and weight machines. I’ve been increasingly disappointed with this gym for multiple reasons: Very few people wipe down their cardio equipment even after sweating profusely all over it, so I’m greeted with sticky, sweat-streaked surfaces. The staff should be (but are not) regularly cleaning the machines and not counting on thoughtless customers to do it.Speaking of thoughtless customers, most users of the weight machines sit/relax on the machines and look at their phones for several minutes between sets, or leave “place markers” e.g. personal belongings on them and walk away to take a break. The other day I started and finished a 15 minute session in this area and a guy had sat motionless on one of the leg machines the entire time watching his phone screen. Paying polite members who are there to get their workouts done and leave shouldn’t have the inconvenience of asking these campers to move - the equipment is for activity, not lounging or reserving over a break. This is a chronic problem and staff should be (but are not) routinely monitoring this and making people move on if they’re not actively using the machine. Same goes for “tag teaming” machines where two or more people monopolize machines with taking protected turns for long periods of time. I don’t know where this trend of entitlement started, but it needs to stop. Additionally, the bathrooms and toilet areas are not kept clean. I see the same soiling in the toilet area from one day to the next meaning they’re not cleaned regularly, and every time I walk into a stall, the toilets are dirty. Do better, staff and management.
For the most part; I really like this gym. However, during peak hours this gym can get extremely crowded which can be annoying. Also, most staff is pretty nice; except for some of the trainers. When there is PT sessions going on and their is a piece of equipment needed from out of the reserved area; they can be pretty nasty when you ask to use them. Other than that, pretty good gym overall.
Im so glad I joined Retro spring garden several months ago. The front desk staff and management are so friendly and welcoming. I also love the variety of equipment this gym has to offer. I would definitely recommend this gym to anyone.
This would have been a 4- or 5-star review. Except yesterday, 11/30/17, the supervisor of this location, whose name I’m told is Ernesto, denied me a sip of water from the sink behind the counter so that I could take the medications that keep me alive. He stated the following: “I can’t do that cause we sell it.” Retro Management, this is a huge disappointment. Water fountains are a-ok, but if it comes from the sink it’s a no-go because you sell bottled water?? Management might want to establish a blanket policy on this, as other employees have had no problem allowing me a sip of WATER with which to take my medications. In case something wasn’t clear, I asked for a tiny bit of water. No powders in it. No shakes in sight. Just plain water. I’m pretty sure it’s illegal for an establishment that serves food to deny someone a cup of water. So I take it this supervisor would also deny someone clearly in distress (heat, etc) water as well. What a mess.As for the gym itself, it’s a typical franchise chain gym. Nothing special. Decent for $20/month. Beware the contracts, they’re a pain to get out of regardless of the terms.
Great gym. Im hoping it doesnt blow up in popularity but the inevitable seems to have already happened. My brother and I both enjoy everything about it.
I joined the Spring Garden Retro Fitness during its opening week, 2 years ago, but today I decided to cancel my membership due to the unprofessional attitude of the new manager Will. For the last 2 years, I have been doing barbell workouts with a 15lb barbell, but was told today by Will that I could no longer use this barbell because it was being held in a separate workout area for paying customers. Not only was there no communication by the gym that the equipment would no longer be available for use, but Will was also very flippant and unprofessional, when I asked to use the barbell, like I do everyday. When I let him know that I would be filing a complaint with Retro Fitness about his behavior, Will responded by saying dont worry, Ill tear it up. Because of Wills ill-mannered behavior towards me, I no longer feel welcomed at this establishment. I was forced to cancel my membership, and find a gym that is more accommodating of women and their workout routines. I am very disappointed because I enjoyed my 2 years at the Spring Garden retro fitness, but it seems like new management doesnt care about long-time paying customers.
Great place to work out. Helpful staff, good equipment & good prices
The people at this gym are great and the employees are even better, especially Elijah he is such a great help, very polite as well. I recommend this gym for anyone looking for a great motivating place to reach their goals. Stay great!
I would NEVER recommend this gym to anybody. Just cancelled my membership due to my past medical history and primary care physician ordering I stop working out. The manager looked at my note from my physician and asked me “ is this real or did you make this up?”The audacity of an employee, the manager nonetheless, to accuse me of falsifying documentation and impersonating a licensed professional! I told him he can call my primary care anytime and he even tried giving me the documentation back. All in all, very disappointed in the way I was treated as a liar. Would not recommend this gym.Edit: Response to owner,I understand how the document could look falsified but it was not. This is the letter she provided me and none of your staff ever communicated that all these format requirements were necessary. In the future I recommend better communication on your part as to what the expectation is for what you deem an official note. Also please do not accuse customers of falsifying documents in front of your staff. It is humiliating and offensive.
So far so good at this new Retro location. All of the staff I have interacted with are very friendly and courteous. The gym is clean and organized with a wide variety of equipment and a spacious turf area.
Retro is an awesome gym experience. There is community here, they give you a full tour of the gym, and all the team members are welcoming and dedicated to your personal fitness goal. I have never had such an overall inviting experience in a gym!
Great gym with a surprisingly fair charges. They have great equipment.
Overall great customer device, great ownership and the front desk crew is always friendly and welcoming. Ernesto hooks up the smoothies and products. I highly recommend a trial if you are in the area and have never been!
I absolutely recommend this gym. Compared to the last gym in the city that I was a member of, Retro Fitness has three times the space and equipment at half the cost. Definitely give these guys a look if youre trying to find a good gym in the city.
Retro is by far the best gym ive been to! The staff is so friendly and genuine. ... I got to give it to the floor techs the place is so clean and the one girl who works nights is the coolest person i ever met! I LOVE RETRO FITNESS! !!
Great, inspiring gym with a friendly, upbeat staff. The smoothie and snack bar is a fantastic addition, especially for the more than reasonable monthly membership fee. So glad I found this gym!
Fun gym with super friendly staff. Also a ton of different classes offered daily. Fits any schedule.
Always great help and service at the front desk. Gym is kept clean and weights are always put back where they are supposed to be. Smoothies are good too.
Gets the job done. Not a ton of amenities, but everything you need is there. Plus, monthly fees aren’t too high. There’s also a great culture: everyone’s polite and re-racks their weights.
Gyms cool. The cardio machines have cool tech that keeps track of your stats. The benches are uncomfortable though. The front desk staff is overly friendly to the point its borderline creepy, when you leave they just about stumble over eachother to scream bye at you, but the few trainers Ive met have been very knowledgeable and readily answered every question Ive had. I like the broad selection of equipment they have. Memberships start at around $25, which is pretty cheap and then its $35 for the membership with the cardio classes, then it jumps to something like $400 a month for memberships with training sessions. Slightly disappointed theyre not open later on the weekends.
Best gym in Philadelphia, hands down! Top of the line equipment, free weights (including 2 deadlift platforms with bumper plates), a floor entirely dedicated to cardio machines, a cross fit room, indoor turf, a spin room, and group fitness room for $19.99/month! I have yet to find another gym in Philly that can compete. I highly recommend joining this gym!The staff is great and super helpful. The owner actually works out alongside the members and is constantly using feedback to better the gym.Lastly, the smoothies are great and at a reasonable price. They even walk around with samples throughout the day!
Barbells are consistently taken up when I have time to go to the gym. members are resistant or sarcastic to the idea of working in. times for PT sessions are never written accurately on the schedule outside of a room where there are 5 free barbells going unused, setting you up for disappointment. this goes unread as they have me hooked for $25/month anyway.
The equipment at this gym is nice - the cancellation policy is ridiculous. Ive been a member for over a year but Im moving out of town and called to cancel my membership - there is no way to cancel online or over the phone, and so I was told to write a letter or come in person to cancel. I went in person and they told me I could not cancel because a manager was not present and that I had to write a letter, sign it, and send it in the mail. Okay... so I asked if I could write them a letter there at that moment and hand it to them, rather than going through the hastle of mailing a letter. Answer was no.
This place is basically my second home. Staff is very very friendly, gym is very clean, good environment, the smoothie bar is awesome!!! Ernesto and Bob are very helpful and sweet. Love this place.
Not a fan of the customer service... I’ve been going to retro for a year now and have come to this one a few times, I just a week ago moved into the philly area a mile away from this one, long story short they wouldn’t let me use the tanning booth if I’m not paying for it, which I am, but apparently only at the gym I used to go... I asked to make this one my home gym and they said we could do it but it takes time. The manager said if I wanted to use it today I’d have to pay... what happened to making the customer happy... so it made me dissatisfied with how I was treated... what a great way to end my workout...
I really love coming into this gym! Its a great location and space. There are plenty of cardio machines on the first and second floor so it never feels too crowded. The staff is so friendly and inviting which is very rare in gyms nowadays. The personal trainers are also really friendly there, I always feel comfortable asking them questions about how to use certain machines. The fitness orientation session was amazing, the trainers really helped me figure out which excersies are best suited for my fitness goals! I may even upgrade to the team membership just to continue working out with them!
Convienently located, friendly staff. Has everything I need. Exceptionally clean for the amount of traffic this place gets. However, I have noticed that if I go in the evenings, it does seem a little less clean. Everything is very red colored.
Location is always clean. Employees are very nice, when you go consistently they really take time to get to know you and encourage you.
Very Clean. Great staff, not overcrowded and friendly atmosphere.
Great place to get fit. Lots of room and equipment. It’s kept very clean and the employees are kind and helpful.
I love it here. No one bothers you while working out. Classes are fun
May 2018 Update:I pointed out an issue with the extreme humidity in the facility last week, but according with the reply from Retro Fitness, the issue has since been resolved. I have to commend them for being so receptive to feedback. My only remaining issue is that, on a couple of the machines, they go from 122 lbs to 143lbs with 133 missing in between. Not sure if the manufacturers forgot how to count or what.Jan 2018: The machines are not nearly as nice as the ones I was used to from my college gym, but for the monthly price that Im paying, I suppose its adequate. What I dont like about the machines: 1. Very hard to slide on the surface of the machine when youre sitting on it (ie the low row machine). 2. The weights are *extremely* difficult to change. I literally have to trace my finger from one side of the weight to the other side where the switch is. Or I get my eyes within 1 of the weights so I can see what weight the switch is at. Hard to explain this through text, but just know its a pain to change weights.Other than that, its a nice facility with adequate variety and number of machines. Worst time to go is, of course, right when people get off work 5-6:30. You can expect to wait for way machine you would like to use, but thats TBE for the after-work rush.Lastly, the staff is extremely friendly and I must give credit to that. I think one guy called me by my first name when I entered, and Ive only been going there for about a month, so I was surprised by that.
