Been coming here roughly everyday for 6 months having no previous experience with fighting/martial arts. I now know how to kick and punch like 8 different ways, and know how to use a short and long staff. Sifu Edwards is a great teacher and creates a fun/positive environment to learn self-defense. If the classes are bigger, black belts (s/o Tim) help out with teaching and do a really good job. 10/10
My family and I have been training at Shan Tung Kung-Fu for over 9 years and I can honestly say that this is the best martial arts school in the area. Master Kenneth Edwards and his teaching staff are very kind, friendly, professional, and great at teaching children and adults. They are awesome at helping you reach your goals of getting in great shape, learning self-defense and traditional Chinese Martial Arts. I highly recommend Shan Tung Kung-Fu for the entire family.
About two years ago I thought I would try some classes in Kung Fu. I looked through the local throw-aways, read reviews on Google and Yelp, and I visited a few schools. I was a novice with not much other then television characters to compare, but I chose Shan Tung Kung Fu because of what I saw in the students. Students tell much about their teacher by their work. How dedicated students are to practice and detail and the determination to learn difficult moves are inspired by who teaches them. I learned this from years of dance training. The students also have a sense of pride in their accomplishments and there is a strong camaraderie, all because of their teacher. I have also found wonderful friends as well.
I have been training with Master Edwards for over 13 years. He is a phenomenal instructor, and is by far one of the best instructors out there. He is respectful, kind, tough, and will push you to the limits. This is the place you want to be if you want intense training, Professional instruction, and a sense of fellowship and family.
I have been taking martial arts classes with Master Kenneth Edwards @ Shan Tung Kung Fu Martial Arts School for about 9 months now, and I love it. You are always working hard, and being pushed to better yourself. Although, this is a private Kung Fu School, I am treated like family. I look forward to obtaining my Black Belt with Master Kenneth Edwards/Shan Tung Kung Fu family.
I have been coming here for nine and a half years. In that time I have learned so much and have been able to avoid being bullied. I started going to Shan Tung Kung Fu when I was nine and wont be stopping any time soon. The instructors at Shan Tung Kung Fu are very dedicated to their work and really try to help each student succeed. The curriculum is designed to allow students to go at their own pace. Students also learn things that will help them defend themselves. This particular style of Kung Fu was developed by a general for use by soldiers. Every movement is elegant and effective towards keeping you safe.
My son has been taking lessons here for nearly 9 years, and I have taken lessons off and on over the years as time permits. I find Sifu Edwards, and the other instructors as well, to be encouraging and inspiring. My son started with he was 8 and continues to enjoy his lessons and improve.
Ive always wanted to take a martial arts class. I did Crossfit/Bootcamp for over 6 years and finally pushed myself to look into a martial arts class. I drove by Shan Tun Kung Fu and met with Master Kenneth Edwards. He was very friendly and made sure I understood that this is a private martial arts school. I completely understood. I mean, you dont want the wrong people joining up and then disrupting or giving attitude in class. So, after the free private lesson to get a better idea of what is involved, I signed up and Im so glad I did!! Every class is like one big family. Everyone there has there own personal goals, but everyone has the same goal, which is to continue to learn and perfect their martial art moves. It challenges you physically and mentally. Its been almost a year since I signed up and will be several more before I reach my goal in becoming a black belt! Master Edwards even has classes for kids. I wish I had taken this when I was younger. If you have any interest in martial arts, I highly recommend you visit with Master Edwards. Hes a great teacher and knows how to motivate you in a friendly and professional manor.
BEWARE!!!!! This place is not a real school! the classes are only 45 minutes long, and unless you pay for the unlimited, you can only attend 2 classes per week.Sifu only cares about getting paid, and cares nothing for the actual art, philosophy, and history tought to students. Im moving out of state and therefore cant complete the 3 year contract he forced me to sign, and now he wants me to pay the $6k upfront in order to cancel it...Choice is yours, but Id stay away.
I started training here a while ago and have since gotten in better shape, learned to fight with far more positive outcomes and have learned far more fighting and discipline skills than ever before.-Love,Soren.
I am a former student of the school, where I actually began my Kung fu career. Previously, I had trained at a Karate school and things didnt really click for me there. Back then I found Shan Tung in the yellow pages called up and came down to meet the instructor. Master Edwards from the beginning was truly professional, and surprisingly very personable. After quickly speaking and touring the school I decided to bite the bullet and sign up on the spot. Yes you do sign a contract, but not unlike at your local gym.People dont seem to realize that almost every exercise studio be it gym, martial arts, gymnastics, yoga etc all have these same check and balance systems in place, because certain risks will always be taken by the student when they train, so waivers and contracts are what they are ..standard. These establishments are business after all. To those that have issues with this, I say go train at a park with a guru or whoever is willing to train you for $5. As the saying goes though you get what you pay for.Master Edwards curriculum is designed to expose the student to some of the best the traditional martial arts has to offer from hand forms, to weapons, to self defense, and sparring. Safety first was a firm rule, so everyone had to have the proper gear in order to participate in sparring classes. Overall my experience there was a fun one that always kept my guessing and learning which I appreciated. I found myself going to kung fu class more than the gym, and it quickly became my main workout. Also unlike many other large martial arts schools Master Edwards teaches and oversees the majority of his classes. His instructors that teach the other classes are hand selected and black belts who are proficient and professional as well. They also have various classes for children, and adults, and after relocating to New York later I found his prices were actually quite fair in comparison to a lot of other schools I checked out.If youre looking for a professional Martial arts school with a well rounded curriculum, and not to mention fun environment, give them a shot.
