I am so impressed with how knowledgeable Dr. Capella is with guinea pigs. Twice now this hospital has come to my rescue for my fur babies. They have brought 2 of my guinea pigs back from severe illness. Once when my female had mites and now when one of my boars has an upper respiratory infection which can be fatal to guinea pigs. They immediately took him in and put him in an oxygen room, gave him a nebulizer treatment and then throughly checked him over. Dr. Capella was very friendly and caring she really listened to my concerns as Ive already seen one pig die from an U.R.I. I felt very informed when the vet. Tech explained the treatment plan and reassured by her that we were on the right treatment plan. Super friendly and extremely caring ! This is the only place I will bring my piggies from now on!

UPDATE:Amanda took the time to correct the situation and provide us with options and we were able to get our dog seen. Thank you Amanda! Dr. Calvert helped us out and promptly followed up.The doctors and techs at Calvert are great but I was just told by the office admin I cannot get my sick dog in for a month and we are an existing patient for over 6 years. I was told that they have an influx of new patients they are trying to accommodate and I find this NOT acceptable and unfortunately will be looking for a new vet. I would have expected them to ask a doctor if they could squeeze my dog in and the office assistant was snarky and offered nothing.

Just some background: I am a registered veterinary technician; I just don’t work in an animal hospital setting anymore. I have tried a few vets, but I am most comfortable here, and especially working with Dr. Capella.I appreciated her communication when my beloved cat was diagnosed with terminal illnesses. It was a difficult time, but I am very thankful to Dr. Capella and the team for their honesty and availability. It was an awful situation that could have been much worse, and I am confident that we did everything we could for him, which puts me at peace.

Read through these reviews and you will see the care you receive from the Vets and Techs is really great...while the office staff is horrendous. The best word to describe most of them is nasty. Not to mention their constant inability to do what they say or act like a decent human being to you. I get people have bad days but being friendly is a part of being in a support position. Negative demeanor is not appreciated and if you dont like your job there are lots of other places you can work. Maybe find one where you dont have to talk to people.

Love, care, and medical excellence are the norm at Calvert. My dog has chronic medical issues that were detected by the doctors here. We have been going for four years and will continue. Calvart will treat your pet with the absolute best care in the area or refer you if they believe you need a specialist. They will go above and beyond. After years of treatment here, my dog chipped a tooth on a toy. Dr. Hepner called me a bit after she did my dogs tooth extraction letting me know that she had some toys for him to pick from. She went above and beyond. This is the type of excellent service you can expect.

I took my dog here a month ago and due to Covid I wasn’t able to go in the office which wasn’t a problem, but when I left I didn’t receive any paperwork of my dogs visit. I was sent a text to pay my bill and was told they would email a detailed report of my dogs visit with a list of vaccines she got. I NEVER received this and I have requested for it several times. I was told it was email which it was not... I checked all my mailboxes as well as spam nothing was sent to me except for the receipt of my payment. I need these records my dog got a rabies shot at this visit and I have no record of it. Just very unprofessional and not helpful at all, not to mention this was my dogs first time at this office so I would expect a detailed exam since it was their first time seeing her. Save your time and money and go to one of the other amazing vets that are in this area there are plenty to choose from.

We had been with VCA for 5 years. The team of doctors and techs are amazing but the office staff is why we are leaving. In the last two weeks we have loaded up for appointments made via phone and online to turn around with no medical help for my dogs toothache. Both appointments were not recorded and I was told that when I called it was my fault the person in the office did not record my appointment. The office person told me twice that this was my fault that I would show up at 11:40 on a Saturday to take my dog to the vet. I did not have an appointment and it would be $125 to be seen. The second time (schedule 2 weeks prior) I was told they were having trouble with their online scheduling and I should have called. I hate leaving the doctors but I need a team that I can depend on when it comes to the care of my animals, my family members! I warn you that if you want a dependable team that you should look for a different clinic. The office staff is not there for you or your pet!

I called in for an ER visit for my rabbit. There was an apparent miscommunication from the caller to the vet. Long story short, my time and money had been wasted. My rabbit could not be helped, and I was told an exaggeration of his health condition and guilt tripped by the vet into trying to get me to spend more than just an exam on him when she could not address his issues. I should have just gone to STAHL in VA first rather than try going here. Never again.

It has been 2mos. since my dog Chase passed. I waited as to not write a review under emotion. VCA was his Vet of record. I took him in as a very weak/sick dog. Dr.Hepner gave him a half baked exam & released w/ clean bill of health. Chase was dead in 1 week. Vets. must heed the advice of pet owner who truly/completely know their pets, but instead I was treated as a pet owner over reacting. Chase was my life & reason to live, my soul has been ripped from my being. Since this VCA conglomerate bought out Calvert & the turnover with employees it has Not been to standard. Very dissatisfied with my recent experience at this vet talking to Zoe. Been taking my two parrots here over the years and really valued the care they received. One got very very ill over the weekend when Calvert was closed so we of course made an emergency run. I had all results sent to Calvert as I really value their knowledge. When I called today to inquire about the results I was told heartlessly it will be a $38 interpretation fee. I feel this is terribly insensitive, we’ve been patients for years, spending hundreds of dollars there and would have obviously been there this time if they had been open. All I asked was for an opinion on the results I HAD sent over. It’s as if they are just out for money and don’t truly care about the well being of your pet. I have a bird experiencing seizures and am genuinely fearful of the outcome, spent hundreds at the emergency vet and will likely have more visits to Calvert in the coming weeks, the least they could do was read results and show some compassion.

Calvert Vets are the best! My cat, Doc, and I have been patients for a little over a year, and I happily drive over an hour (round trip) for his appointments at this wonderful Certified Cat Friendly practice! The girls at the front desk know us by name, and are great at keeping track of what were due for. And they love Doc!Doc had a serious health issue that our last vet had given up on solving- I had almost lost him. When I met Dr. Gilmer, everything changed. She was able to run a few tests and give us a diagnosis within just a couple of appointments. Her bedside manner is great, and she is always happy to do extra research to find out whether theres a better way to treat my boy. She always goes the extra mile. Since weve been seeing her, hes gotten a lot better! We love everyone at Calvert. They have made both me and Doc so comfortable. When my husband and I went on a 2 week vacation, we were happy to know that he would be staying with our friends at Calvert Vets. They returned him safe, happy and healthy.I will never go to anyone else, and I refer all of my friends and family to them!

I called spoke with Katie on the phone and explained to her the situation and that Titan was also dog aggressive but people friendly and I was worried about taking him to the vet but he NEEDED to be seen. She got me an appointment for two hours later where titan was able to avoid other dogs and was seen by some amazing staff members. They were so sweet with him, talked me through everything, gave him lots of treats and it was the most relaxed I’ve seen my boy at the vet ever. I’ll definitely be using VCA Calvert again. I have been a long time customer of Calvert. I love Dr. Gilmer and trust her with all of my fur babies. I trust her recommendations and dont feel she recommends me to have any unnecessary treatments for my pet. I feel comfortable having her as my pets doctor and will continue to see her as long as she is there. I will say that I find it to be a little more costly when compared to family and friends visits to their veterinarian. I have also been to a vet that offered a small multi-pet discount, which while small was appreciated and helpful. My sisters vet also offers her a discount for being a long time customer. Again, it is small, but it is nice to know its there. While the price is sometimes a bit of a shock to the system, I pay for the trust that I have in the vet that cares for my fur babies. That means the most to me.

My pet was taken here as an emergency while I was away on vacation. And to no fault of the staff/team she had to be euthanized. What makes me dissatisfied and heartbroken is when I specifically requested and paid for the return of my pets ashes and a paw print, I got nothing. I am having to re-grieve the loss of my pet all over again. I never even got a sympathy card from the practice. For $300 I don’t have my pet or her ashes, and I don’t think the practice could care less. I won’t recommend exotic owners go here there are far better priced and more compassionate veterinary exotic practices in the area.

I have had 5 visits to Calvert, over the last 2 years. My first concern is I have never walked out without a bill totaling 350.00 or less, for minor illness, with a long list of tests run. Never has an illness been diagnosed within the first visit. More tests and more tests, more money, till we get to a maybe it is ???? My second concern is once you are an established patient, if you call because there is an issue and you need your pet to be seen, you are charged for an emergency visit, and you walk in and the business is empty ? Also nothing is done with you in the room, other than weight, ear and teeth check. Then your pet is removed, brought back by a tech, and maybe if your lucky the vet will come back in the room to give you a diagnosis, if not your just loaded down with medicine, and told to come back for a recheck. If you refuse any of the pile of products, you get a lecture. Sorry but I can get the same shampoo on line for $20 less. The same ear cleaner for $10 less. Before moving to this area, my normal Veterinarian never charged for a recheck. You can believe Calvert does, for a 5 minute look over, then your out the door. Most of the staff is very friendly and welcoming, a beautiful clean facility. So disappointed, will continue to search.

Brought our dog here a few years ago for an injury. Every single person was rude and had a serious attitude. I felt like I was being talked down to the entire time I was there. The staff have a huge stigma against pit bull types, and aren’t afraid to let us show. I was put down for raw feeding, was told I was uneducated, and was blamed for my dogs anxiety and fear. I was told he should already be neutered, so he could be ‘fat and happy’. He can’t be trim and happy? I also had leftover ham as bribery, and was layed into for feeding him ham. I don’t feed ham to him at every meal. It was a high value treat and I thought it would help distract him. Apparently I’m the worst pet owner ever and have no knowledge of how to take proper care of him. Yet this place will push a toxic science diet into you so they can make a buck. His yearly bloodwork is impeccable, by the way. Teeth clean as can be. His vet jokes that he will live forever, he’s so healthy and shows very little signs of aging at almost 7. This place is just terrible and they only want your money. Their attitudes made that quite clear. You couldn’t pay me to go back, I could never trust people like them with my four legged family members. It was the worst experience I’ve ever had in the history of vet visits. Fear mongering and bullying is their technique.

Everyone there loves animals and cares for them to the very best of their abilities. They do sometimes recommend additional bloodwork, which they clearly say is optional, in case people want to be proactive in caring for their pets. The cost seems a tad pricy, but they are excellent and there are enough vets where you can always get an appointment.

We have only had our Lhasa Apso (Celine) their a hand full of times, but we were very pleased with the Drs, receptionist, & staff members. They treated her as if she were their own. Called us always the next day to see how she was doing. So, we cant say enough good things about Calvert.

This is my first time Calvert Vet Clinic. I was really impressed with the cleanliness, friendliness and knowledge of the reception people. Next, after filling out the forms for the doctor to review, Dr. Lacy Gilmer survived in the room. With their assistant. She was very informative, Pleasant to talk to, answer to all my questions and provided me with more information that I did not know. What I liked about this was her personal attention she gave to my cockatiel, bird. She did a thorough physical check as well as clipped her nails, suggested she needed vitamin A in her diet and gave me a package of different pellet type foods, to give Pearl so she may live a healthier life. I also have a cap that I shall bring down there in the near future. My old Vet Clinic is very stressed out, the doctor is non informative and anyway. And as we all know our pets are like our childrenThis location is a little farther for me to get to but due to the interest and the care that the doctors and nurses give I will be back again! If you have not tried then, please do you will be surprised at the overall care and concern they have for your animals.Chip DAmboise

I have been taking my pets here for years. The facility is very nice and clean. But more important is the quality of care. ....it is the best, no matter what vet your pets sees. If you are lucky enough to get Dr. DeJesus....you have found the best. Also a special thanks to Tami (sry if I got the spelling wrong) and Katie for always being so nice and friendly. It may be a little expensive but it is worth it.

Avoid this place. They are evil and incompetent. They are evil because their priority is to make the most money. They recommend unnecessary tests, and ineffective treatments. Only to benefit them. And the almost killed my dog today by prescribing a pain mefication, 5 times the normal dose. I knew enough to know this was wrong.

I love Calvert Vet Center. Ive been taking my pets there for about 8 years now, and it has been my favorite vet to go to. Even after moving out of the area, I continue to go there. All of the Vets have been very friendly and always answer my questions professionally. The Vet Techs and other staff are all great as well. Everyone seems to be understanding of the fact that pets can be expensive and they have tried to work with me to space out my visits (for multiple pets in different stages of life) so that I can afford it. When my childhood pet needed to be put to sleep few years ago the staff were very compassionate and even though things didnt go as planned, with my cat dying before he could be euthanized, I still received a lovely card in the mail with his paw prints. I recommend Calvert to everyone I know all the time!

This vet is horrible!!! They could care less about the animals they just want the money. My dog has a disease that we have to pray was caught in time due to wasted time coming here! We took him 3 times! They never listened to what we were saying and even tried telling us the symptoms we said werent happening! They gave us a cream every visit. Our dog has vasculitis and its so common in his breed! Hes now on medication and on the road to recovery Im so glad we went to a different vet!

I came here for a second opinion. My dog has been suffering with terrible itching. The first vet gave us a bunch of it could be this or it could be that along with a $500 list of prescription medications that may or may not work. In search of a 2nd opinion, we went to Calvert Veterinary Center. They gave us a proposed treatment plan for over $1,000 with tests and medications that were not even associated with the reason for bringing her to the vet in the first place. We explained that we wanted to deal with the problem at hand first and would address the unrelated blood work once we could get the itching under control. We received a recommendation for $350 in medications. It felt like we were being upsold the entire time. When we agreed to additional testing, but discussed using an online service provider for her prescriptions, we could tell that they were disinterested in us. They care more about their cut than they do the health of the animal. I explained that I didnt want to simply do $300 in testing (which we did) and $350 in medication when I didnt even feel that trust had been established. If we ordered the medication elsewhere, and it worked, then I would feel much better about trusting their opinion. And if they want to promote the health of the pet so much - then consider price matching. Instead, they printed the prescriptions for us, but the drug company said they can only legally receive a fax from the Vet office not a copy faxed by a patient. When the VetRx company tried to reach out to have a copy of the prescription faxed to them, they refused. They said it took too much time and they dont work with outside companies. So now, because of their unwillingness to work with a prescription company, the only way to get our dog the medication she needs is to get the medication directly from them or to go to another vet. I totally understand the need to make a buck in this economy, but as a consumer, its important to trust the providers. And yes, in this economy, saving $100 is important too. Furthermore, the prescription didnt match the treatment plan (misleading...) and we were told the treatment plan didnt take our dogs weight into consideration (why?). We were even told that one medication treated a disease that the research showed it did not. When questioned about it, we were told that the FDA requirements were too difficult to get this medication to pass as an anti-parasitic, but trust me every vet around town prescribes it. We left feeling like they didnt know any more than the first vet we went to (who did work with the prescription company). Im not trying to not care about our dog, but at this point, we are $1,000 with no answers and an itchy dog. I want to work with a vet we can trust and one that I dont feel is simply trying to make a dollar. I havent found that at Calvert and I will certainly keep looking.

After a 13 year relationship with Dr. Kreb at Glen Burnie Animal Hospital, I was disappointed to hear he had retired. My first and only experience with the new Vet left me feeling uneasy. My 13 y/o Kitty had been losing weight for some time and Vet just kept running tests with no results. Her communication skills lacked as I am not a Vet and dont understand all the terminology. After a few months, my girl was definitely not well so I took her to Calvert. From the Reception to the Techs to the Vets, I was immediately at ease with this place. Everything was explained to me in terms I could understand. Sadly, the news I got was not good and time was running out. Everyone there handled my grief with such care and compassion. I scheduled an in-home euthanization for my girl and was even more touched with how graceful and gentle they were throughout that process. While my heart is broken, I feel I made the right choice with the right kind of people. My Grandpuppy and 2 other kitties will now be patients there.

I recently adopted a sick Quaker parrot. Ive made numerous visits to Dr. Gilmer as a result, with some being last minute. She has been amazing at ensuring that Shibbys needs were taken care of, and I honestly believe she would be dead without Dr. Gilmers help. There are very few knowledgeable vets in this area who treat avians, and I am so glad to have one so close to my home. We had a previous vet who failed to notice that our other bird, Pongo, had high cholesterol, even though the results from the lab were clear. Dr. Gilmer noticed this right away and gave advice on how to manage this through diet. The rest of the staff at Calvert Vet is amazing too. Zoey has helped a ton when I call in and leave messages for the Dr. Its clear she takes down very detailed messages and gets them to the vet ASAP. Ive had good vets before that were ruined because their support staff was awful and Im so glad I can trust that the receptionists are top notch.Rachel, who I believe is the vet tech, is very good at wrangling my sometimes-bitey feathered friend. You can tell she genuinely loves and cares for animals. She takes time to calm Shibby down to help keep her anxiety low.In all, everyone there treats my pets as if they were their own, and I never feel rushed there, or uncomfortable. I cannot say enough good things about Calvert Vet and I highly recommend them.
