Not the greatest vibes for females that want to feel comfortable lifting. As it is men here stare at all women that enter the upstairs lifting area but what did it for me was having one of the trainers stop helping one of his clients to try to tell me there was a better way to lift, not that my form was wrong but just a better way to target certain muscles (I wasn’t trying to target those muscles) ironically, I could see others with horrible form nearby. I was the only female in that area at the time. As it is, it’s hard to get the courage to go into those areas when you know youll be stared at but to be called out when your form is fine just did it for me and is the reason, I decided to leave this place.

I really enjoyed being a member here, but the cancellation process has been a nightmare. I first tried to cancel my membership all the way back in March. Several months later I start getting charged membership fees again without any forewarning. It has been a slog trying to get the charges refunded— Luis from their cancellation department doesnt respond for days or weeks at a time and ignores everything I write to them. From glancing at recent reviews, it seems many people are having similar experiences trying to cancel. The gym itself is good, but clearly the corporate half of the business is shady :(

While I greatly enjoyed my time working out here, the cancellation process has ruined my experience. After moving out of state in November of 2020, I cancelled my membership (and received email confirmation) only later to find out that I was re-enrolled in autopay and paid for 5 months of membership. I have reached out twice to fix this issue including personally emailing the manager, Brian Nguyen, but still have not gotten any answer. Have been trying to resolve for weeks.

Towel service is a great recent upgrade! The staff is friendly enough, and the gym isn’t too crowded mid-morning, mid-afternoon, and late evening. It’s a basic neighborhood gym. Good equipment, and machines are quickly repaired when broken. That said, parking can be tough and the place is tragic when compared to Fitness SF’s newer locations in San Francisco. The quality gap is enormous. Still, it’s a great value for the current pricing.

The location and the hours are good. The shower floors are really unsightly and it is hot as hell in the entire locker room. You’d think with all the money they’re charging for a membership they could afford to turn on the a/c or redo the tiles so it didn’t give the impression that if you stepped in the shower barefoot you would surely contract some kind of swamp fungus. Also would love it if there was some kind of lounge area to sit and use WiFi between workouts-Feels pretty crammed overall.

I still get frustrated with the all too regular price increases, but I do enjoy the atmosphere of these gyms.Previous: They have been drastically increasing their rates with no increase in services. July 1 they go to $70 a month. No pool, no amenities. I’ve been with them for over 10 years. This is outrageous. Good bye. Thanks for the two day notice. Happy Pride.

This place is ok. It’s clean, not too expensive, and convenient to my apartment. I have two problems with it though. One is fixable, the other is not. The fixable one- why are there not enough plates? I’m constantly pilfering plates from other benches/machines. So is everyone else. Just buy more plates! Problem solved. The harder one to solve is it’s not really big enough for the number of people, and they compensate by putting all the machines really close together. Which means you’re more likely to get the machine you need, but also it always feels like you’re about to accidentally clock someone with a dumb bell.

It is a decent gym, but beware: there is no air conditioning at all. And they like to creep up the membership rates very suddenly with little or no prior courtesy notice. The current manager is one of the coolest guys around. Pick this place over the decrepit 24 Hour Fitness on Webster any day—at least this place doesn’t smell like B.O.I received a reply for whom I assume is the owner (which is a very nice gesture) touching on the subject of membership price increases. I completely understand raising the rates for everyone across the board for upgrades (and new gym openings in the city). However, I respectfully disagree with this argument: I have not seen any upgrades to the Oakland gym in it of itself—this is my home gym and has been so on and off since it was a Gold’s Gym in 2009. So my main gripe is to penalize an Oakland-only member with membership rate hikes when there are minute (if any) upgrades to the Oakland gym in it of itself. The other argument that management has thrown at me is the “comparison argument”: “well, all the other gyms are charging so much more!” To which I normally say, “how does that actually affect your profit at the end of the day?” This gym is not going anywhere and the business appears to be booming. But simply because everyone else is charging their new members more does not justify a price increase for existing members at this gym. At the end of the day, I think the gym is decent, and I am overall satisfied with it. Just a note to prospective new & to existing members: pay close attention to the justifications for the price increases.

They need to get on top of their Back Office. I signed up my wife for membership on February 2nd but she ended up not liking it. I already paid for the first and last month of her membership. When I asked the front desk about cancellation, because I requested after the 20th of February, they said would have to charge an extra month so Id pay for 3 months when she had used the gym once or twice?? Why do you need to give a certain amount of notice if youve already paid the last month? On top of that, you have to email to cancel. I emailed Sunday, and 2+ days later, still no response. I also called today for Membership Services during their operating hours. On hold for several minutes, then sent to voicemail. Repeated 3x and still eventually voicemail every time.Additionally, went through my email to find my membership contract -- did not see one.Honestly very tempted to cancel my own membership.Reply to owner:This was never told to me when I signed my wife up. They said it would be month to month, no conditions, pay first and last month. Additionally, I called the Oakland location yesterday and spoke to someone. They said since I paid for the last month already, even though its after the 20th, I wouldnt be billed for a 3rd month. Which is correct?Final update:I received a reply from the Cancellation Department and they waived the extra month fee. Still, I hope this review helps them understand how frustrating this experience of handling membership service is for their customers and they are able to make some changes. Updating my review to a 3*.

Wide equipment selection. Staff friendly. Locally owned.Bad stuff: cramped feeling -not enough floor space for stretching. Gets very crowded around 5pm. No jacuzzi tub, just a sauna. Horrid music blaring from speakers (even though half the members have headsets.)Mystery: Towel service would be a nice add-on service. Not sure why they dont do this since it could be done for just the members who want to pay for it.

Ive been going to this gym for years now and its seriously going downhill. The gym is not cleaned well and often has noticeable sweat stains and dust throughout. The cardio machines are older and not well maintained; its pretty common for machines to be offline for more than a week. Additionally, theyve cut a majority of my favorite high impact classes like spin. Some classes did not get replaced at all and others were replaced with a low impact offering. Warm up mats are literally falling apart. Locker rooms are really outdated as well. Only plus is that they have been replacing their weightlifting equipment.I voiced my concerns to the manager and fitness director but ultimately I decided to move to the Embarcadero location because I am having a better experience there. If youre serious about having a multitude of options at the gym, I suggest you go elsewhere. Its like corporate has completely forgot about the Oakland location.

I am a new Bay Area resident, and I still dont have a California drivers license nor a job that shows I work in the Bay Area, and because of that I cannot be allowed a 1 day free pass to actually try the gym out, and some sales rep named Julia basically told me that they dont trust people to just use their gym for free without being able to show that they are locals and they can commit to sign up for it, which sounds absurd to me. I called another gym right after and they have no problem having me use their gym for a 3 day trial for free, and if i do like it (which I already know I will) then I can join them. So 1 star for extremely poor customer service, it really needs to change that ridiculous policy and get some sales reps who actually care to get new customers.

Fitness SF Oakland is where fitness goals go to die.The gym is chronically crowded, poorly ventilated, and equipment is often broken and old, and there are no perks like towel service. I also get a weird vibe from going there, not sure why.I initially signed up because its close to my apartment and I figured that I would go to the gym more often since it was close. However I actually had trouble getting myself to go there since it was always no fun, and I started getting seriously out of shape.I then got a membership at the Oakland YMCA, where they have a pool, a basketball gym, a paddleball court, and much nicer weight room / equipment (if you like doing squats and cardio machines especially), and the vibe overall is much better. Even though its slightly farther from my apartment I started going there more often and would get much better workouts in. Its made a real difference in my fitness and Ive lost a lot of weight there by a combination of basketball, swimming, and lifting. My girlfriend also stopped going to SF fitness a while ago, and is now going to Core Power Yoga classes in Rockridge, which she enjoys a lot more, and is able to actually stick to a workout routine. We stopped going to SF fitness entirely and recently cancelled our membership. If you have a ton of discipline to go to an unpleasant environment to work out, then this gym might be for you. If this isnt the case, Id look elsewhere, at the Oakland YMCA gym, or take workout classes.

The trainers are legit depending on the level you want and need. I learned some great strengthening exercises from personal trainer, Sam Berenson, that have really helped improve my posture (*combined with Physical Therapy at home exercises for my old Left Shoulder Injury). Sam is really professional & down to earth. My coordination with exercise classes may be a bit lacking (Ill start getting my Rights & Lefts confused), but I did attend a super Group X Core Strengthening class with Liam and it was fun & tough. Liam also has good taste in tunes (if youre old like me you might like it). Olympic weights, row machine, group classes, and plenty of cardio machines. I live within walking distance of this gym, so I don’t have to deal with parking by the gym; which is sparse. I suggest under the overpass by MacArthur and Grand. The gym on weekdays around 4pm starts to get super busy and you may be waiting around to use a treadmill or a weight machine. The group classes vary from spin, to sunrise hatha yoga by the lake. Every instructor I’ve met has been awesome. Facility is clean, staff is accommodating, and the music is a hit or miss. It seems like they let the staff choose the music. So you never know what may be playing over the speakers. I suggest bringing your own headset to listen to music. The locker room (womens’) is clean and includes a sauna. No towel service at this gym. Personally, I don’t think it’s necessary. For a smaller gym, there’s a lot they offer in the space provided. I suggest trying it out to see if it’s a good fit for your fitness goals.

The best gym Ive ever been a member at... and Ive been a member at 12 other gyms over the past 18 years. Its the best gym not because of the facility or equipment (which is good), but because of the people that go here. This is the only gym that I can say is a true community of people and where jut about everyone is putting in work. Before you roll your eyes at that statement, let me explain: Everyone is considerate and even supportive of eachother. Whether youre a 60 year old woman bench pressing or a muscled mutant on the elliptical, everyone is supportive of eachother. I have never seen such a variety of people interact, coexist, and even socialize in the same weight room. The women are not afraid to get on the free weights, and the the biggest guys dont look down on the first-timers. I can tell people are here to actually train and improve themselves. Thats motivating. Best of all - no crossfit. The staff Ive interacted with is great, and they have sports drinks / protein shakes at the front if you need one. Price is fair.Cons: Some of the leg equiment needs updating, and they need a few more safety clips for the barbells.I am fortunate to live only a block away, but if youre looking for parking, just go up the hill on MacArthur.
