I would not give this company even a 1 star rating. If I can, I would give them a negative infinite stars. We rented two 15 passenger van from them on July 1st to July 5th. I would recommend all not to rent from these fraudsters. The gave us 1 van without an AC working. When we bought it to Justin’s attention at the Elizabeth location, he told us to take it to Pep Boys and get it fixed. If we’re renting these vans these things should have been taken care of it before the vans were rented out. We are not taking them for free. We sign a contract to pay and the company did injustice to us for providing us with unsafe vehicle and did not perform its proper check and maintenance. The 2nd van had a bad tire so we had to place a donut tire for the whole trip. The van with AC issue also brake pads got heated quickly where smoke was coming out. The back passenger door did not close properly. Maintenance signs on the dashboard of the vans were popping on so this made us feel uncomfortable. This company put our lives at risk. We have rented from Enterprise, Budget, and many other rental companies and never has such bad experience as they know how to maintain their vehicles. We are disputing our charges for the 2 vehicles as this rental place has put our lives at risk and this company cheats their clients. They also gave us the 2 vans almost empty with fuel and did not clean the vans where in this COVID times we had to sanitize ourselves with Lysol wipes. I work in a customer experience environment and clearly Rent A Wreck FAILED BIG time. They put this families lives in danger. They should not operate as they do not maintain their vehicles to industry and customer standards.

It just did not work at all - never got a rental car but paid full price in advance!It just did not work at all! We paid the full price in advance and never got the car!! Red flag. The location was Newark International airport. rent-a-wreck could not help and just said that this location is run independently, whatever that means. So we never got the car. The phone number provided only has a mailbox of a guy named Carlos and is full so that you cannot leave a message! horrible experience. Never again. We had to rent a car from another rental company. Lets see if we get our money back
I like saving money. R-A-W works differently from the big rental companies and that saves you money. You send them a photo of your license and card before hand, take a quick shuttle to their lot, and boom. The car is there waiting for you.Rent-a-Wreck forgot to send me my Claim number within 2 hours of my flight like they were supposed to, which was a little stressful, but that was fixed quickly. Everything else worked perfectly and the company provided me with a free upgrade, which was really nice. Recommended.

Paying for fake 5-star reviews so your rating isnt dumpier than it already is is not conducive to establishing this legitimacy.

What a joke! Came across this farce of a company through Kayak. I was hesitant but gave them a chance. They canceled my reservation without informing me and left me high and dry without a car. You cant reach anyone by phone. Shady experience start to finish. Use a reputable rental agency.

Great experience with Rent a Wreck last weekend. Car was in great shape, all policies were clearly explained, and staff were friendly and helpful.
My boyfriend and I used this company a few weeks ago during MDW. The car was dirty when we picked it up. Also had no gas. One of the seatbelts in the back didn’t work. The windshield wipers were also terrible and we could barely see when it was raining. The A/C kept going in and out. But the absolute worst thing about this experience was that the power steering would actually go out if we hit the slightest bump in the road. Extremely dangerous and it happened multiple times. We would have to turn the car off and back on again to get it to start working. I would never recommend this place, spend the extra cash to go to a reputable car rental company.

Worst rental company ever!!! Omg if i could give it zero stars i would. I thought the name of the company was actually odd and a bit funny, their name is literal what they give you “wrecks” they don’t even wash their cars for you. The car i got was so dirty/filthy, the chairs had disgusting stains, i had to sit my daughter is those chairs, it had garbage inside and not washed at all, the exterior was so bad. My flight came in early so they wanted me to drop it off earlier or else i would get charged an additional day. They also gave me an empty tank!!! Lol i complained and they switched me to another one with an empty tank and yet still another dirty car. All around it was the worst experience ever with a rental company. Stay away from these people.I will post pictures of the car i got as PROOF see below!!!

Reserved and paid upfront for a car rental, when I got there they told me they didnt have a car for me, I had to go back to the airport and rent from non scammers. Dont ruin your trip, rent from reliable companies.
I have rented cars for years from every rental car company at Newark airport and none have been as good as Rent-A-Wreck.At first it seemed it was going to be a hassle renting a car from them, but after speaking with them several times I decided to do it. The BEST by far, most friendly, courteous car rental place Ive ever dealt with and it took about the same amount of time shuttling getting a car from rent-a-wreck as it does checking out a car in the airport from the nasty places like, Hertz, Budget, Alamo, Dollar, Enterprise, AvisOh yeah and my reck was a 2018 car with only 23,000 milesRent-A-Wreck best car rental at Newark Airport PERIOD.
Do NOT be tempted by the price. They gave me a car with NO LICENSE PLATES. Drove 20 mins into Jersey before realizing it because they had no staff on site to vet their cars, (which I got with a 1/8th tank of gas, by the way. Apparently, they have some other company as their go-between, and so they--brace yourself--had me drive an illegal vehicle back to the airport. Had I been pulled over, I shudder to think what would happen. Im trying to figure out which legal authority to report this to. A total nightmare due to a lack of professionalism. But dont worry: they made it up to me by comping $8.78. But you get what you pay for. And so again, do not be tempted by the price!! Simply not a serious company.

The worst experience I had in renting a car, first of all I did not received an email with ticket number to pick-up. I wasted an hour at airport trying to communicate with the company. No one was picking up the calls. The welcome center had helped me to finally get in touch with them. Secondly, arrived to receive a dirty, smelly car with water drops stains on front window shield to come to find out there was no washer fluid! The worst!!!

The vehicle I rented was an older model Mercedes. It had a fair amount of exterior damage, wear and tear. I later realized days after I drove off the lot that the vehicle had an expired inspection sticker and a sticker above it marked rejected. I dont know what that meant but I asked for a new vehicle and was told that no others were available. The rear doors did not open from the outside and the windshield wipers were dangerously worn out. The license plate light and one of the brake lights were also out. I found this out after the fact and was told that I could replace it for them and they would reimburse me. B. The final straw was when the battery died on the day I was set to return the vehicle. The one silver lining of this experience is that the gentleman I spoke to before, during and after my rental experience was cordial, understanding and professional. However, despite the competitive pricing, I will never rent from this company again
At newark airport they have no actual person there. If you book through a 3rd party they only correspond with you via email. It wasnt until the day of my trip I was told by a rude customer service rep that told me I couldnt get the car cause I have an out of state drivers license.
BEWARE of this SCAM.. Rent-a-wreck - the name should ring a bell. This company is a fraudster taking your money in lieu of not even providing any service.I made a car reservation with this company for my personal trip starting on Aug 19, 2016. The car which was provided to me was actually a WRECK contrary to what is advertised by the merchant online that its cars are well maintained (e.g. Rent-A-Wreck vehicles may have been personally owned, or they could have been owned by another rental car chain company.)The car that was given was a total disaster; the seats were torn, the steering was wearing out, there was patch work all over the place in the body of the car, the headlights were falling out, there were hay/straws hanging out of the boot; although I could not dare to open and check as there was so much of foul smell in the car that no-one can even stand next to it forget about driving it. The doors were almost falling apart and were somehow fixed to the body of the car.The car even had the sticker of REJECTED during Motor Vehicle Inspection on the windscreen, I dont think anyone would dare to risk their lives by using that car.I made multiple attempts to reach out to the company while standing in ABC Parking, Newark (where I was asked to pick up the car) but could not reach them. After getting no response from the merchant, I had to make on-the-spot reservation with another company at Newark airport by paying much higher amount that I would have paid them by making advance purchase.I even could not reach this company over next few days as well. All my calls went to voicemail and they did not reply back to my mails. When I requested merchant for the complete refund as the services were not provided as expected and car they provided was not at all used. I was told they will look into it and refund my amount. No one has reached out to me so far. I would sincerely request everyone NOT to do any business with this company.Just to let you know - according to BBB, this company is OUT-OF-BUSINESS, so not even sure how they are operating.
I was looking for 5 weeks rental, I thought they would turn cheaper than Avis, budget, Hertz...etc but unfortunately they are insanly expensive for the ride/models offering. In contrast 1500 value at AVIS equal 2400+ at RAW.
This has been absolutely the worst experience with a business of any kind that I have had. I reserved my car and followed all instructions. Unfortunately my flight was cancelled due to severe weather that was approaching that evening. When I called to cancel my rental I was told that I was going to be charged the full amount anyway! What? They said they would as a “courtesy” let me use it as a credit for a future rental. Problem is, this trip was for a specific purpose and I have no plans to go to Newark. These are deceptive practices. No one should be expected to pay for something that was not provided. All I can say is....Believe all of the negative reviews and stay far, far away from this place. I will be fighting this for sure!!
Simply stay away from them!!. their reputation is bad and the start asking you stuff left and right, also they charge 25 dollars cancellation fee. There are tons of better deals out there.
Worst experience I have ever had with a rental car.To start, I arrive on the site to find out that the type of vehicle I requested is not available. First, Im given a vehicle that has a tail light out. I report this. Promptly, Im given a vehicle with a headlight out. I report this. Then, I am told that they have no other vehicles.Speaking to an representative, who I believe is the owner of the site, he tells me that he is sorry for my inconvenience. Stunningly, he then states that the previous renters didnt tell him about the lights being out, which is why I am without a car.In this line of logic, it is the previous renters fault that the car is unsafe to drive. Isnt it the rental car companys job to ensure the vehicles they rent are safe?I will note that this site is locally owned and partially independent of Rent-A-Wreck. Regardless, he is allowed to operate in the Rent-a-Wreck organization like this.I strongly recommend choosing another rental car company.
People, do yourselves a favor, rent a car from legit companies, doesnt matter which one, even if the rental price is double then this scam company offers. That way you will save your time and money. The cars they give you are total junk, surprisingly they have inspection labels, I was worried that I will get killed driving one. Truly the worst company I had to deal with, even in 4th world countries cars are better. Take my word for it
BEWARE! I wish I could give these guys a -5! The staff is rude, inefficient, and inconsiderate; I went through an EZ-pass toll, and the car did not have an EZ-pass. I had left a voicemail to Rent-a-Wreck about how to pay for the toll after the fact, if they would pay for it and charge me the toll, and did NOT receive a call back. A month later I received the 50$ over due pay toll ticket, and when I called Rent-a-Wreck, the person simply stated that it was because I passed the toll with no EZ pass (no kidding!) and that I had to pay it. Thanks for nothing. The car I rented with them smelled of cigarette smoke, was dirty, and gas tank on 1/2. It was very apparent they do the very bare minimum when it comes to providing customer service. I dont know much about Rent-A-Wreck in other states, but THIS one in Newark, NJ is far far far from the best.
You can do all the paperwork online which is very convenient, although I had to push them a little for them to send me the emails and to get the claim number. I end up paying half of what other companies offered for a car that suit our needs. I will rent with them again for sure!
If I could give it 0 I would, but then I could t actually rate it and warn you NOT TO RENT A CAR FROM HERE. My boyfriend and I figured it couldnt be as bad as the reviews said and its actually even worse. The car sounds like its falling apart, the seats are seriously stained, it smells, the check engine light is on, and the doors only lock if you manually push down each door lock. Pay the extra money somewhere else and you can save yourself the anxiety that comes from driving one of these POS cars.
We went to pick up our car and right off the bat we see them using a jumper cable so we are like okay whatever it’s not for our rental we get the car come back to our hotel go upstairs to the room for less than 5 min and when we go back down the damn car isn’t starting we called multiple times and get sent to voice mail.
Dont bother. This is a terrible place. Our car was completely unsafe and the tires were flat. The bumper was falling off and a headlight was out among other things. Just stay away and read the other reviews.

I rented a vehicle from Rent-a-Wreck branches in other cities, and I generally got moderately used vehicles that were quite acceptable and at a great price. In Newark, my experience was shocking when I saw the remarkably poor condition of the car. It had 130,450 miles on it, it had tears in the bumpers, appeared like it hadnt been cleaned or vacuumed in months. The muffler sounded like at any moment it could fall off the car due to excessive vibration and rattle, the tire pressure warning light was constantly flashing -- which lead me to have to immediately check all tires (but none needed air) and the seatbelt warning light was on constantly. When I began my trip, the fuel gauge was dangerously low, literally running on fumes, and I didnt know if I would even make it to a gas station -- which is scary when you arrive late at night and youre in Newark. The owner obviously is trying to run a business without any hands on true work or involvement. You pick the car up from a lot, its never been inspected or cleaned, the car is just barely functional, with excessive mileage and wear, and probably quite dangerous to drive. I recommend spending extra money and not using this Rent-a-Wreck location.
I NEVER recommend renting a car from here... Car was returned due to mechanical problems like engine light on the dashboard and side mirror was broken and smelling very bad inside. However, rental company denied to pay off my amount.. Very very sad :(
