I volunteered before the pandemic and they provided free clothing showers and free breakfast lunch and dinner comprised of really great donations from local restaurants and bakeries. They had church services and also provided shelter but the residents had to be drug free and complete a program otherwise they provided referrals. Since Covid they are only serving breakfast and lunch outside to grab and go. Only the missions residents get three meals daily in their dining area and they are not providing church service to the public anymore.

Dont let the other reviews fool you. They know how to put on a show. Favoritism is key here, I can mention more than a few names of people whove generously helped themselves to donations but Im not going to. This place does not provide any resources to get out of your situation but rather than help, its a do it on your own and if nothing works out theyll still kick you out (you cant enter the program for 3 months after youve been kicked out). Ive watched honest working men get kicked out over addicts that continued to violate the rules. The pastor in the chapel is spiteful and will do anything in his power to get back at anyone whos done something or said anything he doesnt like. The men who are at the front desk are usually part of the program so it depends on who was already rude before you get there or if youre lucky to get an actual competent human being. The food from what I remember was fine until they hired someone who obviously doesnt care about her job or what she serves to the less unfortunate, Ive watched her suck her teeth and give a hard time to anyone who has specific dietary requirements being religious or due to diet. If you didnt want the job you shouldnt have taken it. Same to say to a majority or the so called Godly people here.I hope this place gets exposed for the joke it is.

The Bower mission is ok but there is alot of things that could change first of all they should have some sort of Bible study during this carona virus out break there is no bases of helping people who want to have more freedom in feeling a since of peace and welcoming In this place . I have stayed here for about a month now and Im a musician who plays the guitar I have been told not to play my guitar or sing on the floor that I stay on which is a exsallent way to spread the love of Christ to thso who are suffering during this time . when we are suffering and going through hard times Such as now we should have more time to reflect on our day and find peace in Jesus just having place to sleep is ok but here needs to be more structure in this place . the staff is rude here and are very demanding and are actin as if this is aprison and allowing guest to fight and argue I dont recomand this place to Christians who are trying to make a positive change in this world so if you need a place to stay find another drop in shelter .

Oh my goodness, what an amazing experience for me. I love to volunteer but this particular organization has just become dear to my heart. This was my first time volunteering with the Bowery Mission. It happened to be the same day that songstress Alicia Keys would also volunteer as well by serving food to the less fortunate and homeless population. Her presence truly put smiles on the faces of many people which touched my heart.I learned by speaking with a regular worker, that help is needed year round at the Bowery Mission, they provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner everyday to hundreds of people. A fellow volunteer spoke about how he used to be homeless and care there often for meals. He said that it is easy for a person to end up in that predicament and said something that I always say, “Life happens”. He also mentioned that he is grateful for places like the Bowery who provides endless meals.I will be making plans to incorporate this organization into my lifestyle by committing to volunteer more than once a day because help is needed everyday in every way. I invite you to jump onboard too to bless someone else in need.

When I was homeless, I was living at a shelter that was a few blocks from here. The food at my shelter was vile, so I ate plenty of meals here. The food was hit or miss mainly, but it was always something edible. Sometimes the portions were small, but they feed ALOT of people here. All food is donated and prepared onsite. And never once did I get sick eating the food here, unlike the shelter that I was living at.Some of the clientele were street homeless, so sometimes you had to deal with all those issues. They also distribute clothing a couple of days per week. Its a LONG wait, but it is worth it if you need clothing. I got a few REALLY nice outfits here - all well known name brands. If you tell them that you are looking for work, they will do their best to put an outfit together that you could wear to interviews. For the street homeless, they also provide showers for them once or twice a week. They also have doctors that volunteer their time once a week that provide free care - Medicaid not required. They also provide rehab programs and shelter services. Im not too familiar with them - Its not a facility that NYC sends people to. Its a Christian organization.NOTE: They ask that you attend the one hour chapel service before each meal, but they dont require you to. However if you dont attend, it will take longer for you to be fed - they send people to the cafeteria row by row.The chapel services are always different, and some are very enjoyable. Sometimes Amish or Mennonite groups will come in from out of state and will sing Christian songs as well as preach.I had strayed from the Lord for years, and the chapel services really helped me to reconnect. For that alone I will always be grateful.

Just as Deirdre mentioned, this address is for The Bowery Mission. This is not for the Bowery Hotel which the pictures and reviews suggest. Please do not confuse the Bowery Mission for the Bowery Ballroom either. The Bowery Mission is a homeless shelter and rehabilitation program. They get many donations from Whole Foods and other organizations. The Bowery Mission is religiously affiliated but the people are not required to convert. Everyone who stays at the Mission is expected to work, learn, and earn their keep. They will leave the program with $3000 in savings.

I always thought that a shelter is temporary housing where the homeless can get to sleep and be served some meals. Why do all these shelters try to push a Bible study or their beliefs on you? Why do you need a case manager if you just need a temporary place to lay your head and get back on your feet? Why so many rules to follow and so many early curfews like high school kids? Why dont they have separate shelters for street people and mentally ill people? Not everyone who is homeless is mentally ill or came from the street. Some people lost their homes or are unemployed and looking to get back on their feet. The whole shelter system sucks and they need to shut them down and provide permanent and affordable housing for the homeless. Those who are crazy should be housed in a mental facility. The bums from the street should have a special place where they can go to shower and clean up themselves. The only solution for homelessness is to get to the root of the problem. Get rid of all these case managers because they are not helping anyone. They only collect a paycheck and try to hold down people so they can be employed. I have never seens so much BS in my entire life. Thank God I got a job very quickly, got my own place, and I am back on my feet again.I have a few reccomendations below to solve homelessness:HOMELESS PEOPLE NEED AFFORDABLE HOUSING, NOT SHELTERS. PERIOD. THE CRAZIES NEED A MENTAL FACILITY WHERE THEY CAN TAKE THEIR MEDS AND REST. THEY SHOULD NOT BE MIXED IN WITH NORMAL PEOPLE. THE EX CONVICTS, DRUGGIES, AND THE LIKES NEED THEIR OWN FACILITY TO RECOVER. THEY SHOULD NOT BE MIXED IN WITH NORMAL PEOPLE. ALL NORMAL PEOPLE LOOKING FOR JOBS SHOULD BE MOVED TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND GET THE HELP THEY NEED. PROBLEM SOLVED.

This place is horrible do not believe the other reviews they are misguided. As a person who have used their services I can tell you exactly what they are like. The staff is rude, money grubbing and cruel.when it was cold the city forced them against their wishes to establish a temporary cold blue shelter. They were unhappy about this and did their best to discourage you from staying. I was told since I have a job and I am actively attempting to fix my current situation I was barred from staying there and using their services. In the staffs own words and I qoute I dont care where you sleep or how cold it is, you aint sleeping here. Is a job worth more than having somewhere to sleep? Come here early tomorrow around 5pm for the service and you can stay, no go away. Its too late for this messI told them I had proof of employment and my work hours. I didnt need a mat, I could sleep in a chair. I just didnt want be outside in the cold and have something bad happen to me or die. not my problem, shouldve thought about that before you came after service. It was only 9pm.They try to act as though they want to help but they dont. They want you to stay in your situation so they can keep getting money. Money they dont even spend on the homeless. There chapel has a lice infestation that they know and dont care about. They receive large amounts of money that they keep for their selves. They only things they hand out are the really junk donations and they do that sparingly. The other day someone brought in a bunch of winter gloves. The man at the desk and the fat security guard took them. I asked for a pair and they told me to go buy it. When I was leaving I overheard them talking about selling the ones they werent keeping for their selves. I am going to call the city and news reporters on them because this organization should not behave like this. They force you to sit for hours (it is not optional) in their chapel before each meal, yes their chapel with the infestation. It is 3am right now and I have to go the bathroom badly, I walked there hoping to use their restroom. The guard just looked at me while i was standing there knocking. It couldve been a fatal emergency, he dont care. Eventually I got someone to come to the door, who immediately had a attitude, shouting LEAVE mind you I am not a trouble maker, I dont talk to anyone, I come to eat and thats it. There is no reason to conduct their self in that manner towards me. I tried to explain I just needed to use the restroom. He wasnt hearing it. He told me to go away very rudely. See the way it works there is this. They only do something if they can make a profit off it, and even then they will do the bare minimum and the staff wont even be the ones doing it. The make their volunteers do the work, they dont even pay them. If they ask about pay the start talking about how thats not Gods way and such. Either they need a new staff or it needs to be shutdown. I know that sounds cruel but its better than being treated like less than a human being just because your homeless. Ive seen them mistreat many people and get away with it. They run a shelter, yep. Your never going to get in it though, its for women only and if your not putting out they are quick to get rid of you. They also have a neat little money making program called the 7 day, basically they house you for seven days and then kick you out. Why? Because its a revolving door. Everytime a bed opens they get more money for the person that fills it. Its funny how they talk about how they have no money and need donations but have expensive cars and very expensive sound equipment and projectors and all types of other stuff that costs money. And they are always buying new stuff for their selves.I am calling the city and the irs on them. They need to provide accounting for where all this money is going and be audited. they are not gods people. This is not Gods way.

This shelter is so old and has served so many people .... What can you say about a place that takes people in from the cold and feeds them. And dating back so long. I remember my Grandmother used to say to me Listen in School and do good, Or youll end up on the Bowery as a little kid i didnt get it. Later i realized what she meant. Back in her day, hell even up to the 90s thats what the Bowery was. Homeless people, Rockers & Punks from CBGBS. Now ironically i could never afford to live on the Bowery.
