I was moving back to NYC after helping care for my aging mother upstate. I read about The Webster in the NYTimes and it sounded like an ideal place to get back into the rhythm of New York. I got so much writing work done while living there -- the free wifi was fast and reliable -- they clean your room once a week, and the food was good and plentiful. I made some good friends while I lived there -- and were still friends today even though we eventually found our own apartments. If you need to be in NYC for your work or internship, I highly recommend it. My favorite thing was eating dinner in the back garden in the summertime, when thered be lightning bugs fluttering around. Who knew you could experience such a quiet tranquil place in the middle of Manhattan?

Webster is a great accommodation choice for young professional women who want to live/or work in New York City. I really enjoyed and appreciated the safety of the building, the cleanliness of the facilities, the access and ease of in-house laundry services, the themed holiday celebrations/decorations and more importantly, the location of the building! Further, the staff, housekeeping, and security guards were hospitable; I definitely felt safe and secure at the Webster.Honestly, the living experience is what you make of it. The only thing I remember being anxious about was missing the dining hours! It would be nice if the building allowed residents to keep a mini fridge in their rooms. There were times where I wish I had been able to store meals or groceries for when I missed the buildings cafeteria hours.Regardless, I do wish I was able to experience a full summer at the Webster! I moved during the winter season so I, unfortunately, did not get to take advantage of the beautiful rooftop.I remember being really excited to move in and begin my “independent life” in New York City. I quickly fell at home and in love with my cozy room in the heart of New York City; you will too!

I was originally introduced to the Webster Apartments through a university trip, and it was the perfect place to stay when I moved to NYC to start my first job. With rent being all-inclusive of food, housing, and utilities, (did I mention free laundry??) budgeting couldnt be easier for a new grad. Rooms are clean, furnished, and a good size- but if you are unhappy in any way the staff are accommodating and more than happy to move you around (they quickly moved me to a new room with better lighting)! Meals were nutritious and all around good, you do need to be aware of when serving times are but considering you dont need to cook or clean up...Ill take it! I agree that mini fridges should be considered, on days where you eat out in the city (of which there will be many) itd be nice to keep a few things. As others have said, the location is perfect for commuting or zipping around the city, the parlor rooms are cozy, and the rooftop is gorgeous!Even while staying during COVID, I was more than impressed with safety measures enforced by Webster to keep staff and residents safe but never uncomfortable. I moved out this summer into an apartment in the city, and while it was time for me to leave Ill always look back on my time there fondly. The staff as well as the tenants themselves are all kind, open, and welcoming.I cant recommend the Webster enough. If youre adverse to dorms and any sort of co-living situation, Im urging you to give it a try!

Webster Apartments is an amazing place to stay in New York City. The whole building is very clean and the staff always friendly and helpful. I loved the food (which was always tasty and balanced). For Vegetarians and Vegans the food might not be satisfying every day though. The building could not be better located, its possible to commute everywhere in a short time and even walk or ride a bike to most of the interesting places in the city. The rooms are small but pretty and comfortable and some rooms have an amazing view. All in all I had the perfect experience with the Webster Apartments and can recommend everyone who comes to NYC to stay there.

I lived at The Webster Apartments for three years and had a wonderful experience! The location is great, the staff is very friendly and helpful and the dining hall is also great serving two meals per day. The buildings 24-hour security also made me feel very safe during my stay. When NYC began to shut down due to COVID-19, the Webster staff did an amazing job in enforcing protocols and keeping the residents safe. I will have many fond memories from my time staying at The Webster Apartments!

Stayed here for a month as part of an internship program with my school. The location is great, staff is friendly, and it gives you the NYC experience for sure (super tiny, cramped space). The main problem with the complex is food. They have a meal plan that you can purchase, and for me, I had the 2 meals a day-plan. Its pretty nice, because you can switch up your meals, and the dining hall in the building is convenient. But as a vegan, your options are so limited. I had several nights of just eating rice, because theres nothing else available. They do not accommodate to any dietary needs or allergens, and this is stated multiple times online and in paperwork, so I dont fault them there. Its just this difficultly, coupled with the fact that you cant have a fridge to store your own food in your own room makes for a frustrating experience - again, mainly as a vegan. It would be nice if people staying there could have more autonomy when it comes to their food options (like being able to have a fridge, blender, toaster in your room), because its super limiting in that way. But other than that, its a nice place to live. They have lots of social events for the entire building (which is all female) throughout the month, and its not bad for the price

Loved every minute of my tenure and stay at the Webster. Near my church, a subway line away from employment, balanced meals, and quite close to heart in terms of warmth of reception, diversity and congeniality from guests and the Webster Team. Gardens and rooftop offered inspiration. There is also the benefit of readily accessible resources and supports on 34th Street. Hope you enjoy your stay.

Im updating my review, after living here for almost a year Im changing my 5star to 2stars. On the upside, the staff is mostly friendly and helpful. On the downside, over the COVID-19 period the quality of food has gone worse. Everything is baked and fried never fresh grilled meat and or vegetables. There are exceptional days where there are good meals, that I acknowledge and appreciate. The wifi is weak and unstable not good for working at home. Room services have been discontinued. Bathrooms are not cleaned often enough. I understand the testamentary conditions that brought The Webster into existence but the house rules are very divorced from the age group of the residents : 1)no men allowed(not even open nights once a week/month as we called them in University) 2)only a certain number of women are allowed but only until midnight. Also, it would be great if we can get time notices or something when the maintenance men will be on the floors. Thats not cool at all coming out the shower and bumping into men. Very convenient in location and price especially for a New York new comer but only advisable for short stays.

I just want to give a shout-out to the The Webster Apartmentss amazing staff who have been working around the clock in the last couple of weeks to provide a spotlessly clean and safe environment for us in these challenging times. The care and the attentiveness we have been surrounded by is truly wonderful! I am certainly not a kitchen-fairy so having a 3- course healthy meal twice a day included in the rent is a dream come true (especially if we need to shelter in place). It is also very comforting to belong to a community in quarantine times and sharing experiences (in socially distant manner) with fellow tenants who are from all over the word. It creates a strictly 6 feet apart comradery between us. Especially in these challenging times it is great to sit in the beautifully landscaped gorgeous garden and rooftop surrounded by vivid flowers, chirping birds in the heart of Manhattan. It is provides inspiration for our next, post-pandemic phase in our lives. We really appreciate The Webster Apartments staffs support and services!

Living at the Webster Apartments (pre and post COVID) has been a lifesaver--I wouldnt be able to live and work in NYC without it.Yes, the rooms are small, the bathrooms are shared, and the meals repetitive, but you cant beat the price (trust me. Ive looked), location, and amenities (rooftop view of the Empire State Building never gets old).I have been a huge fan of Websters unique support for working women since I moved here, and I will say: the COVID pandemic only made it more clear that I made the right decision to stay here. The building moved rapidly to take precautions to ensure that all residents AND staff were safe and has continued to work to keep it so. The staff has been incredible throughout all of this--not just with great customer service, but no surface remains unbleached for more than 20 minutes it seems like. They even have established a quarantine floor for those who do feel ill, with meals delivered daily. During the height of the NYC outbreak in March/April 2020, I literally could not have been in a safer location.Tl;dr Webster Apartments is an incredible option for women who want to live and work in New York safely and cheaply.

I think the other reviewers are being too hard on the Webster. I stayed in 2009 in August and September when I was an intern at Anna Sui. Its perfect walking distance from the fashion district and its right by the subway for people who work farther away. The food was acceptable, better than typical cafeteria food-to say it was awful or anything bad is exaggerating, its certainly not either of those things. The beds were comfortable, the closet was much bigger than I expected and I brought a lot. The showers were clean, one reviewer said theyre gross and you need to wear sandals in them.........of course you do! Its similar to dorm life so why wouldnt you expect to wear sandals in a shared shower? If that reviewer usually does otherwise in a common bathroom then they are just gross. A majority of the other girls there were around my age, in their 20s, so its easy to meet others but there were women of all ages, even one in her 70s. At the time, most of the other girls were German and it was an amazing experience being friends with them and learning about their culture and sharing mine. You cant beat the price, especially living in New York and considering they give you two meals a day. There was a safety concern about living in NY by myself but I felt very safe there, they lock the front door at a certain time every night and theres a guard to let you in. The thing about living there is that you have breakfast and dinner plus hanging out time with the same women everyday, if you get kidnapped and dont show up, your friends will notice sooner rather than later. Overall this place is perfect for a woman living in NY for a short time, its hard to rent an apartment for only a few months plus its super lonely and expensive. I cant tell you how thrilled I was to have found the Webster and stay there-Id absolutely do it again if I lived in NY again temporarily.

I lived at the Webster for six months, and had an incredibly positive experience. I knew no one when I moved to NYC, but within a few weeks, I had made friends and settled into city life seamlessly. The two private gardens are stunning, and the little beau parlors--each elegantly decorated on a literary theme--are ideal for hanging out with friends after work. The rent was far more affordable on my tiny publishing salary than any other living situation I had been able to find, and the staff people were invariably kind and patient when answering my many new-to-the-city questions. I loved coming home to such a safe and beautiful building, and have recommended it to many women from my college, interns at work, etc. I cant imagine a more perfect place for someone on a limited budget transitioning to life in the Big Apple.

I have lived in the Webster Apartments for over a year while completing my studies at a local university. Overall, I am very pleased with my experience. The building is safe, clean and well maintained. I find the management and members of the staff very considerate and understanding. I also appreciate their efforts to protect the historical integrity of the building – which provides a very “homey” atmosphere. The common areas (which include a large parlor and a beautiful garden) are especially lovely and great places to study or work on projects. During the warm weather, the roof top (complete with lounging areas) is also a great space! However, what I appreciate most about The Webster is the sense of community that develops among the guests - which can be very important to those away from home for the first time or new to NYC. I have met women from all over the world who are doing incredible work during their stay in the city. In addition to those completing internships at notable organizations, I have met doctors conducting research - Ph.D. candidates working on their dissertations - writers, dancers and actors pursuing careers – and many doing humanitarian work with the United Nations. I have made connections that will stay with me long after I leave The Webster!I would highly recommend The Webster Apartments for anyone seeking temporary housing (home) in NYC!

I’ve stayed at the Webster Apartments sporadically over the past year and I have to say my time here has been great. I was shocked to read reviews that gave Webster a low rating. What are they upset with? The cost is more than affordable, it is centrally located, there is a variety of food, and the staff is pleasant and friendly.First of all, if you simply google the average monthly cost of renting an apartment in Manhattan you will find that it is upward of $2500. At Webster, the cost is nearly half that AND you get two meals a day AND maid service. Try and find another apartment building where you can get all that for such a low cost. Also, you need to realize that you are in Manhattan. Space is limited to begin with so yes the rooms are not luxuriously roomy but they are sufficient enough. Regardless, there are no reasons to complain. You don’t need a kitchen because they provide you with two meals a day. There is a TV room you always have access to as well as a library you can read or get work done and many other rooms you can lounge in. In fact, you can borrow any book from the library or borrow a DVD from a long list of movies that can be found at the front desk. Also, in the nicer weather you can enjoy the outdoors on the rooftop with a spectacular view of the Empire State Building or relax in the downstairs garden, which is beautiful in the spring, summer, and fall.In addition, you are in NEW YORK CITY, the greatest city in the world. Go out and enjoy that! Webster is located on 34th Street, which is such a great location. You are just two blocks away from a wide variety of shopping such as the 8-story Macy’s, a movie theater, and the West Side Highway, which is a beautiful place to walk or run.As for the food, I am an extremely picky eater so one of my big concerns going anywhere is the selection of food I will be provided. I have to say that the food Webster provides has been perfect. They always have some kind of meat or pasta, as well as veggies and some kind of starch. Also, there is always an open salad bar with great options. Now come on, what girl doesn’t like a salad? Also, the staff that I have talked to is so nice. The women at the front desk are always willing to answer my questions and the security guard at the entrance greets me every time I walk in and out of the building. The maids that work on the floors I have stayed on are always willing to reciprocate a smile or conversation. They were all very kind to me.All in all, I have to say I LOVE the Webster Apartments and I am looking forward to my next visit.

The staff is very friendly and the food is varied and delicious. Every day when I got back home after work, a lovely dinner was ready and when I got to my room, everything was cleaned. Besides all these facilities and services the best thing is meeting so many friends. There are a lot of working woman living here, doing internships. Because most of them are there for a period of a few months, most of them are open to meet new friends and make the best of it. Within no time I got to meet about 12 girls that became my friends. I think theres no better place to live where you can meet this many friends. Seriously, the people that rank this place with only one star are probably pretty spoiled. Yes, there are some rules to keep in order, but they are not unreasonable and if you just act normal everythings cool. The Webster is hands down one of the most corrupt residencies in NYC. They care nothing about their guests and attempt to squeeze every last dime out of them. They claim to be a residency for working women, but board more interns than full time women. THEN their policy is to charge the non-paid interns more than full time working women for the same room. The food is lackluster. Not to mention they dont have any milk substitutes for those who cant process lactose. Angela Calzone is by far the worst COO Ive ever come across in my life. She is rude to every guest she comes across. I have had multiple friends receive rude responses to email inquiries from her. Yet, she never attempts to meet with guests and remedy/explain situations face to face. Seriously, the only nice people on staff are the people who are paid minimum wage to serve dumpster food. The professional staff is by far the rudest bunch I have ever come across in my life... They def. didnt take notes from Disney on how to treat paying customers. The Webster DOES NOT care and will most likely end up with a fate much like the dozens of other female only residencies in NYC -- CLOSED. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME DEALING WITH THE WEBSTER. I recommend the Markle 10/10 (plus at the Markle you get mini fridge and your own bathroom).

My daughter stayed here while doing an internship in the fashion industry. The bathrooms were filthy and showers so tiny you could not even turn around in them. The cost you see is not inclusive, they find as many ways to add on as possible. Including towel washing and extra charge if there is make up on the cloths or towels. It is strict hours that are silly for grown women and when my son moved things out of the room because she needed to make more space (took too much for such a small place) they accused her of entertaining men and her brother was there for only the 5 min it took to move two large duffle bags downstairs. Ive been here for about 2 days now. I agree with many of the reviews; the staff really is discourteous. Its Winter here now and so theyve turned the heat on to the MAX. I have to open the windows to allow some of the cold air in to strike a balance. The internet works when it wants to. The elevator is constantly out of service. The lights in the room are pretty dull. The water comes out brown/yellow and has to run for about 30 seconds to be clear. The door automatically locks once you close it, so Heaven help you if you rush out for a pee or even worse, go to take a shower and leave your key in the room. Youll be stuck in a towel in the hallway for up to half an hour just waiting on the staff downstairs to come open up for you. The linens and towels smell moldy and rules can be a bit burdensome if youre a free-willed type of person.I havent yet tasted the food, but from what Im told, its horrible. This is a place for working women. Most of the residents/guests here are interns from all over the world. That may sound exciting, but it really just feels like another day in private school. Theyre snobby, cliquish, and some are even straight up rude.I will say, however, that it is quite a convenient location. Everything you need is within a 2-15 walking radius, and you can always order food to keep your hunger down low. The social rooms and general construction of the building is very 1930s, so if youre the type to appreciate that sort of atmosphere, then thats something youll enjoy.Overall, its not a place that will ever lose business because of its long standing reputation. However, if you have other options, Id encourage you to explore them.

The Webster Apartments are in a great location for an okay price. I think its a little expensive, $360 a week adds up to over $1400 a month, and you dont even get your own bathroom. However, everything is very very clean, and included in your rent is two meals a day, so it does end up being a little less than that when you add in the meals. Plus, there is a maid service that will tidy up your room and take out your trash once a week. Also included are a few resident events throughout the month, like special food nights, movie nights, yoga classes, etc. Living in Webster is a lot like living in a college dorm, but it is much nicer, much cleaner and a much better experience overall. The only thing that is kind of a drawback, depending on who you are, is that the girls staying in the building are primarily foreign. This in no way bothers me BECAUSE they are foreign, but I find it is hard to get to know the other girls if you do not share their language and culture. There are very few girls that speak English, at least in my experience.

Don’t waste your money. There are several reasons I didn’t like living at the Webster. To name a few:The rent is too high for what they offer. Sure, food and utilities are included, but they take over half of your paycheck. So if you’re paying other bills, like student loans, it can make it extremely difficult to save money in order to find another place eventually.Zero privacy. If you like your privacy and having your own space, don’t live here. Yes, you get your own room, but they can come into your room whenever they want. This was a huge issue for me because I like my space and I like knowing no one is going to come in when I’m not there and move my belongings. This happened multiple times during my stay. I requested to be notified BEFORE they entered my room and they didn’t follow through. The last straw for me was when I came back and my room was a mess. Apparently they entered my room to remove an air conditioner (which I never filled out a form for, so they shouldn’t have been in my room to begin with) and found mildew and mold on my wall (which was already cleaned by the cleaning staff). They climbed on top of my bed, stepped on my shoe boxes with the shoes still in them, and stepped on my printer and portfolio. Everything was stacked and stored neatly next to my dresser, then I come back to find boxes crushed and things knocked over. They also broke the curtain rod and never fixed it.As far as cleanliness, I wouldn’t trust what they do. They “clean” the bathrooms backwards. They start with the toilets, only to wipe down the seats with a cloth. Then they wipe down the sink with the same cloth and rinse that cloth out in the same sink. Sorry, but that’s disgusting and lazy, especially when the cleaning closet is right outside the bathroom. One of my friends said she was using the bathroom when someone came in to clean and all they did was spray something in the toilets and leave. No scrubbing, no flushing, nothing. I also saw one particular cleaning staff member do what I described above, leave the bathroom with the gloves she used to “clean” still on her hands, then go to the elevator and push the buttons with her dirty gloves still on. Absolutely disgusting. This is one reason why I had a problem with them cleaning my room. I didn’t know if they used clean gloves, or the same pair they used to clean the toilets. I had to leave notes telling them to not touch or move my belongings. My beauty products were moved at one point, so from then on, I had to make sure everything was put away before leaving for work on cleaning day.If you work late, good luck eating dinner. If you have the money to eat out after working late, that’s great. But if you miss their set dinner hours, you’ll have to order something or find a snack. Mini fridges aren’t allowed, so having food after a late night isn’t going to happen. CVS was my go-to if I missed dinner. The food itself isn’t that great either. Cooking may be a hassle, but I’d rather do that than eat what they offer. I’m not a picky eater. Sometimes the food was just inedible. The vegetables were always over cooked, the meat was always extremely salty, and the fruit usually had holes or splits in it. They limit what you are allowed to chose from, and don’t always give the correct serving. One time for dinner, I didn’t want the meat option because I knew it would be too salty, so I went for the pierogis. They only gave me three tiny pierogis, so I asked for a little more and they said no. They don’t always serve balanced meals either. Sometimes pasta would be the entree and rice or barley would be a side...I’m not a nutritionist, but that doesn’t make sense. The food was usually on the cold side, never hot like you would expect a fresh cooked meal to be. I was also told I couldn’t bring a cookie back to my room. Rules like that get extremely annoying after a while.Read the policy booklet before applying. I recommend living anywhere else before considering the Webster. Get an apartment with a friend, couch hop, sublet. Don’t live here. Save your money and your sanity.

This place is the worst place I have ever lived for 3 months. Staff is incredibly rude and not helpful at all. Food is so disgusting and would not eat it. Overall terrible place to live, would not recommend this place to anyone. You can find cheaper places without the rude people, crappy food and expenses that are so ridiculous.

I am staying at the webster for 2 months and i am in my second week here. I honestly dont think i could stay anywhere better.Staff are very friendly- I do not understand the bad reviews! they are friendly and i got told i could call them at anytime (we have phones in our room) even if it was for change for the vending machine or if i got locked out of my room at 3am!rooms are nice- the rooms are not too small but they are not big. They have plenty of space for everything and loads of draws, a desk, a large mirror and closet.(they also store your suitcase in the basement for you )food is nice- not amazing but it is nice, has everything you need as well as plenty of salad and hot food!the webster- really lovely rooms, piano room is beautiful and massive with gorgeous big sofas. 2 sitting rooms, a computer room, vending machines, 3 laundry rooms, the green room and lovely garden.every where is sooo clean and thereis plenty of toilets and shower rooms on each floor.one block from penn station (main train station and subway) 2 blocks from maces- so it is touristy!I cant forget the massive roof top gardern with sun loungers and a 360 view of new york. you can see everything from the hudson and the whole of the empire state!could not recommend it enough!! (I am from london)

Although I am in New York I cannot get passed this rudeness of the employees in The Webster. They give you signs to put on your door saying do not disturb. You would think that would mean that they wouldnt enter. WRONG. They Entered my room wrote me a note stating I need to clean everything off the floor so they can sweep the crappy rugs on the floor. But not only that, they are making me take my own sheets off my bed and my blanket and my pillows so they can clean the grimy blanket that substitutes as a bed pad. They also turned off my AC complaining im sucking up all of their energy. I understand that but coming into my room when my valuables are out on display is not ok. I am not the only one this has happened to as well. I think I just have a major problem with the staff. They are rude. There is a rule that men have to be escorted wherever they go in the building but the service(MEN) workers can roam around at 7 in the AM on my floor un escorted. I see an issue with that. Parents arent allowed privacy but these service workers are. Thats fair. This place is nice for summer interns but I wouldnt recommend staying any longer than 3 months. I dont think there is anywhere nicer though so its a good last resort.
