So awesome. The catamaran made the 3-5 floor swells easy to be on. Enjoyed the ride. Nothing better than fresh wind blowing your hair around and fresh water air. Too busy outside that forgot to get coffee or a snack.
Just luck of the draw ..we booked passage when there were 4 to 7 foot waves...which meant we were in for a three hour roller coaster ride. Would we take the ferry if we were traveling through again...YOU BET ! ( hopefully the next time we will get to enjoy a calmer sea..
Amazingly fast car-passenger ferry. Great for motorcycle adventurers after labor day, as motos are free then.
I decided that my kids and I would take our car across the lake during a long road trip. It was an exciting portion of the trip. I was really glad that they were doing a summer promotion where the kids tickets were free. (Apparently they do this quite often during summer.) The inside was comfortable and there is a snack bar with hot food available. (I would recommend the quesadilla over the pizza.) The kids and I liked being able to go outside during the ride. It does get extremely windy if you go up the stairs, so hold onto hats. Staff were both friendly and efficient. We made it across early.(It is classified as transportation, so if you still have to wear a mask on an airplane, youll still have to wear a mask while inside the ferrys cabin.)
Great way to start our trip. Staff was awesome and they kept our dog company while we were up top. Went over and above. Thank you
Boat is nice, trip is convenient, but the cost is too high for the experience..kids under 5 ride free, and this dampens the experience for riders who just want some peace and quiet. My trip was essentially a floating day-care. Maybe charge for kids and drop down the adult rates. I would love to take this regularly as I need to go back and forth but, not worth it
Thanks for handing out the motion sickness pills. Good job on the choppy lake.
We crossed Lake Michigan in both directions a couple of days apart; the first crossing was as rough as Ive experienced. Unlike the SS Badger, the slower ferry to the North, the Lake Express is small and suffers in choppy waters. Lets just say that Dramamine was at a premium on this trip. The return trip, by comparison, was a walk in the park: smooth as silk and less than 2.5 hours across.
For a change in pace, skip Chicago and take the ferry. Youll meet people from all around America. Youll see Lake Michigan up close. Its a bit pricey but worth it and the people who work there are all for your satisfaction.
The entrance is kind of hidden so be on the lookout!Parking is pretty tight also although they do have security. The facility itself is pretty nice. They do need more of a gift shop for incoming visitors, thats just a part of tourism.
Very efficient easy on easy off........the only thing I didnt like was the tie down setup for my motorcycle. The D-rings were fixed to the floor, rather than being on a rail system which made for a tricky four point tie down if you werent parked in exactly the right spot.......
Amazing staff that go way above and beyond to make you and your family comfortable. An unforgettable mini-voyage across the mighty Lake Michigan. Pretty fast traveling at about 28-32 knots gets you across with your ride in about 2.5 hours. Word of warning, for the family members that get weasy quick due to motion sickness; take some Dramamine about 20 minutes before the ride.
A great way to relax if youre going from Michigan to Wisconsin or vice versa. It doesnt save much time, but at least you arent fighting traffic. They have a sun deck so you can sit atop the boat, outside to enjoy the view. There is also a cafe to get a bite or a drink. Its about 2 1/2 hours from Muskegon to Milwaukee.
This is just insanely, INSANELY expensive. There is zero reason it should cost over 300$ for a car and 2 people to get across the lake. On top of that they encourage people to leave their dogs in their car with the windows up? Thats disgusting and wrong. Ive been on other ferries that were less than a quarter the cost for similar distance. This insane rate along with promoting animal abuse is getting you a 1*
If you are travelling from Michigan to Minnesota or back google maps might automatically route you to this ferry without letting you know. This is insane, a mistake in Google Maps. The ferry costs about $100 for the car plus $100 per person. The ferry when it leaves is pretty fast but it only leaves twice a day. So if you get there five minutes after it leaves that means you have added several hours to your trip. Google maps is unaware of the ferry schedule and just plops you on the doorstep of the ferry place without taking into account when the ferry leaves. The ferry website is not continually updated on the status of the ferry. If there is bad weather and large waves in Lake Michigan the ferry will not depart, and Google Maps is unaware of this as well. So best case you arrive just a few minutes before the ferry goes, and you have to pay $300 more than you budgeted. Worst case Google Maps drives you 100 miles out of your way and you get to the ferry when it is not running. I realize this is not the correct place to complain, I will talk to Google Maps. The ferry itself seems highly cool, the employee I talked to at the ferry seemed friendly and engaging with plenty of helpful information. It absolutely was not his fault that I had just driven 100 miles in the wrong direction and the ferry was not going to be running for probably 48 hours. You have to call ahead to confirm the ferry is running. The ferry should update the world on its website about when it is running and whether it is running, and this information has to be integrated into Google Maps. When you want to ride a $300 ferry, the decision is whether you want to ride a ferry. It is not about saving five minutes (theoretically) on an algorithm to bring you to a new location. What the heck google maps. I was driving 700 miles and we were able to afford a $300 ferry, but I have driven that far on a budget in the past and $300 would have been end of story. By the way, in google maps settings you can select a setting that says avoid ferries. You should also be able to have a setting that says avoid $300 unplanned incidental costs or alterations to my planned trip that might delay me by 24 hours or send me on a wild goose chase 100 miles out of my way.
Fantastic service! They know what they are doing and dont mess around. I would suggest that you plan to arrive an hour early so you can get ready to board. An hour will go by fast while you sit outside and relax watching the water. Prices are a little high but you get excellent service. Do keep in mind that you are still on a boat and some storms can cancel your trip so always have a backup plan.
Everything about our trip was great. Quick on, quick off, smooth ride, lots of room, comfortable seats, great views.
What an easy, relaxing way to get to Michigan. Would definitely use the Lake Express High-Speed Ferry again.
I loved the quick crossing and a nice day for a boat ride. You do need to keep more shirts and hoodies in the muskegon office
Best decision I made on my 2 week trip. The whole process was very well organized. Not the cheapest but it was a relaxing 2 1/2 hours.
Nice way to travel. A bit pricey but gets the job done
This is a well run operation, so make sure you are on time. The boat has comfortable clean seating, many with small tables. The sun deck above is windy, but fun as you may spot cargo ships and there is no land in sight for much of the trip. They serve food and drinks at reasonable prices too. You may want to put your phone to sleep as there isnt a signal in the middle of the lake and your battery can go fast. Also, only the driver can park on the vehicle deck and you cant go back to your car until docked, so be prepared for that. We had a very smooth sailing at sunset and it was much more relaxing than circling around Chicago from Milwaukee to get to Michigan. Weather of course may affect those with a tendency toward sea sickness, but the stewards are well prepared to help.
Clean. Quiet. Very nice for my first time
Great way to get to western Michigan. The price outweighs the stress of going around the southern portion of Lake Michigan.
Such a cool experience! I was in the middle of relocating to Minneapolis from Indianapolis and I decided to take the ferry across Lake Michigan. Instead of a 9 hour drive, I had a 6 hour drive and 3 hour ferry. I was able to just relax and drink hot chocolate the whole time instead of driving through Chicago 🤣
Really fun and convenient. Must do on a motorcycle trip around lake Michigan.
A really unique way to travel the mid west!
With the exception of children running inside it was great.
Very nice ride employees are friendly and helpful
Loved avoiding the Chicago traffic on a holiday weekend!
Quick, smooth, relaxing. Beats driving through or around Chicago!
Good food and the top of the ferry was the best
Loved it getting to Milwaukee has never been easier
Crew very rude nothing to do on the boat the SS Badger is way better.
It really was a short ride for the distance but it was nothing to do there no movies who wasnt ready till halfway through you had just enough time to wobble up to the counter to order and they didnt have very much to choose from nothing to do but go eat and go to sleep if you could and once you got off if you left something behind you couldnt go back on might as well kiss it goodbye
Let me tell you, its really fast!
Great trip. Water was like glass.
What a great way to travel from Michigan to Wisconsin!! The trip was smooth and relaxing. The staff onboard were friendly and accommodating. They were sanitizing all areas as we traveled. I will definitely use these services again!!
This was our second time traveling. Its a great fast way to Michigan to avoid Chicago traffic. Clean restrooms and seating, Hot coffee, the upper deck is nice on warmer days.
If you never have done it then now is the time. Just a joy to sit on the deck and watch either state disappear and the appear. So much damn water is very cool!
We had a wonderful time crossing Lake Michigan!!
Going there was fantastic, a experience Ill always remember. But boats are mechanical and sometimes breakAn extended unexpected layover can be costly and problematic. Going back.. Maybe it was the wind, but it wasnt as fun
What a fun ride. Lots of room in the cabin. Be sure to get reservations if you’re taking a car or motorcycle it looks like most days they fill up. Also there is an Enterprise Rent-A-Car right at the location.
This was the coolest thing Ive done this summer Ill be back
I made a mistake while booking tickets. I called ticketing and Sheri straightened everything out for me! Fantastic! Great people!
Such a quick, stress free way to get back and forth from Michigan to Wisconsin. Love avoiding the Chicago traffic. Easy to book tickets, check in (including luggage if you have). Seats and tables available as well as ability to walk around on the top deck. There was snacks and drinks available but I did not try them. Restrooms were kept clean. Pleasant experience
Total rip off for the price. Over $200 to WALK onto the ferry, no car or bike or anything. If you take the Cape May-Lewis Ferry from NJ to Delaware it costs about $50 for 2 people. It was over $218 for this total scam. We ended up paying $80 for the Greyhound instead. RIPOFFS.
Highly recommend taking the ferry across Lake Michigan. Very enjoyable ride
Great workers. Very personable. Loved it
Fun! Way better than driving around Lake Michigan and they serve beer!
Great way to travel a shortcut, look out for the rocking though!
Taken several times. Fun experience. Once cancelled because of weather and given a no hassle refund. Will use again!
My son took his first trip alone as an adult from Muskegon to Milwaukee and this was a first class experience.
We decided to take the ferry across lake Michigan instead of going through Chicago. Nice ride it was about a 3 hour trip. The ferry had good food. Staff was very nice. I will be going to Milwaukee by ferry from now on.
First time on the Express. Get here at very least 45 minutes early. They may inspect your car. If you are not in a car your luggage is inspected. Youll be seated in a cabin with tables. They serve breakfast and lunch items plus beer. We walked up on the top deck and it was quite windy. There are a few seats outside. They may be wet so bring a towel. Ride was fast and smooth. Highly recommend.
Fast and easy as all get-go! Rather than do the drive through Chicago (to Mid-Michigan) I like to take a ferry once or twice a summer. Its always a relaxing trip. We end up reading, watching a movie or sometimes playing a card game with the kids. Highly recommend (along with Amtrak!). :)
Using the ferry saves time. As long as it doesnt get canceled due to poor weather conditions.
Awesome!
Good transportation, good staff, decent price, and a few hours on the water. I would suggest keeping in mind the standby option, Ive taken this a couple times where they informed me they were sold out but both times I was able to get on via standby. Or you could plan ahead and buy your tix ahead of time ( which is NOT how I roll... I personally am always last minute, go with the flow, all about the adventure and the unknown)
This could be a REALLY VALUABLE service and one I would use. They could probably even DOUBLE the amount of people that use this service if they would be realistic with their fees and more flexible with their schedules. Their prices are just stupid. And they do not include additional markup fees for fuel and misc surcharges. Guess they will have to have a little more competition. And when they do I will not patronize this company - I will give my money to the company who put customers and low prices first.
Wonderful, relaxing experience! The staff on the boat was very nice and helpful. They were very accommodating to my elderly mother too. The boat was very clean and the food was very good. You may think its pricy, but its worth it. The only complaint I have is the rental car experience. While Lake Express doesnt handle that portion, you can certainly look up who does and just be prepared to wait for the sales rep to even come in to help you. We waited for 20 minutes for the rep to even come in. We had a reservation in for 2 months. You would think they wouldve known and been prepared for our arrival. But they were not and no one at enterprise would accommodate at all for us being late for our appointment once arriving. Security couldve been a little more nice and not talked down to us, but the overall experience was awesome! Nice job Lake Express!
Cancelled our return trip less than 24 hrs from the schedule departure due to weather. Unreliable.
The ride was great just disappointed they didnt have food, the trip was 4-730 and the paperwork said we werent allowed to bring food.or drinks.
Definitely better than driving through Chicago. A pleasant ride although seating is less than comfortable. Food is a bit pricey but no more than you would expect.
Used the Ferry to see my Girlfriend at her Graduation, then got hitched the week after. Great price for the service received, multiple trips her day, smooth ride, comfortable seating, in-route movie available (4 bucks for a headset). Galley food was a bit pricey, but the trip is only a few hours long.
Great way to travel! They were on time, fast and efficient. It cut our travel time in half! I would definitely ride the ferry again!
