Mess dress was old and falling apart, but for the price I can’t be too picky

Lost items, items that were found were absolutely covered in cat fur. My items came in the store new with tags still on them. I had to dry clean brand new clothes after picking them up. No apology or refund on the lost patches, just some jokes about the cats. ie. The cats live here we just work here. These folks dont care about the cleanliness of the store. The price is good but after the recleaning of once clean clothes the savings is lost. Just save the headache andUse Maxwell AFB.

Mr. Steve is a wonderful person! They do excellent, quality work, usually with a quick turnaround. Good prices andhours of operation. Can get just about anything u need for whatever branch of military. A place u can trust. Highly recommend.

Owner was nice but ended up not being able to do the work they said they could. They ruined a shirt that I had altered but did refund the price of the alterations and the cost of the shirt. The woman working that day said they don’t do alterations on long sleeve shirts and that the owner never should have taken it in. Nice folks, but not fast at what they do and not everyone there is on the same page.

Great service and cheaper then on base. Takes a little longer for uniforms. All the reviews of people not getting quality service is false. This business is Veteran owned by a retired AF officer and he takes pride in supplying uniforms.If your in a rush, and order last minute that is your fault.

I was introduced to Shinbaums Uniforms by a co-worker. I was looking for uniform dress pants for work. Didnt fine my size, but found belts, dress shirts, boots, cargo pants for my son. If you are looking for military style work pants and shirt this is the place for you. By the way they remove military emblems, and do alterations. Biggest size 42R for men in pants and maybe 36 the 38 in women pants. Keep in mind its military.

This place has A+ service and personnel! Our group had the most fantastic experience. Our class came to rent our mess dress and completely overwhelmed the staff who was short due to the holiday but they stayed late to get us all through the line. There is only one cat who is absolutely lovely and oversees from afar. Can’t recommend this family owned business enough.

Great prices and quick turnaround for alterations. I also had a good experience renting mess dress here - the staff ensured I had everything I needed and that the rental uniform fit perfectly. Just beware that they’re closed for an hour for lunch midday.

I LOVE dealing with Shinbaums! Why buy a uniform and have it sit in a closet until you need it and then find out it you gained weight or there is a problem. Get the measurements needed from them, and call it in. Your uniform will show up with in two days usually in a small box, take it out, and shake it out and install your medals and your DONE!Try it on and if there is a problem they will take care of it right away. Give them at LEAST a week ahead of the event so you have plenty of time if there is a issue it can be corrected.When done, take the medals off, roll it up and put it in a flat rate box and send it off. SIMPLE!!!!I have used them for about 5 events now and rented a USAF Mess Dress Uniform from them. They can also take care of building up your Miniatures for you too.

Despite the appearance of the building, this company has consistently provided outstanding service over the years. I have had excellent customer service. They do a precise job with all military-standard sewing and procurement, for all service branches. I consistently recommend my peers and subordinates utilize this asset. I have received only positive feedback. Shinbaums is a gem in Montgomery.

I always go here for uniform alterations and just to buy random things. I love this place. Hes very cheap and does a fantastic job. The older guy who works here has amazing stories to listen to and his cat is very nice. Hes a genuine man who will never over charge you. Yes he has a cat, yes sometimes there will be a little cat hair on a uniform...but there is a lovely thing called a washer that magically gets rid of cat hair. And its honestly never a lot. Ive never had an issue with any alteration made by him. I would definitely reccomend him to anyone who asks.

The only place ill ever go to get my uniforms tailored or buy/rent uniforms. The service is fast and amazing with unbeatable pricing. I love the staff so much, very friendly and funny people. If you dont like this place then something is wrong with you.

If you want to do business with people who never answer the phone, rent out a mess dress for officers with the enlisted stripes clearly cut off of them, and be certain whatever you take to them or rent from them will return with Thomasina’s (their “shop cat”) hair all over everything go here. If you want professionals with actual regard for how u look buy it and get it tailored. I’m pretty sure this guy goes to the Airman’s Attic and gets whatever mess dress items he can and cuts the enlisted ranks from them... he also made sure everyone in my OTS class has three of the four buttons they needed for their white shirt. Place is a joke and so is the family running it.

Horrible. I have been waiting for over 3 weeks for just TWO simple name badges for my uniforms. Everytime I call they tell me to call back. Every time I stop by they act like its no big deal when there are signs all over the place that says name badges take 4-7 days..not ONCE have I even gotten so much as an I apologize for the inconvenience or anything close to remorse.. its been almost a MONTH and I STILL dont have them. Had to go ahead and order from somewhere else. Complete waste of my time!!

Not pleased at all. They didnt tell me that I had to buy my medals so the $60 quote was actually $113. My mess dress does not fit AT ALL. I look like a clown. My coat is to big my skirt is too big they didnt tell me anything except its supposed to fit like this and it in fact is not supposed to fit like this. My skirt is too short and is not strait. It flakes at the bottom like a freaking bell. The ribbons they sold me are falling apart. My tie tab is tattered and on top of it all the uniform smells like this thing has been hanging out in a 200 year old smokers house with mold. Which you dont smell until you actually put the clothing on. The guy said I would be good to go and its ready to wear. Lies. I picked my uniform up the day I was supposed to wear it and now Im stuck looking like an idiot. Im never using this place again.

Alterations are cheaper than on base! Mix military museum with clothing store and you get shinbaums. Very friendly staff that are super knowledgeable about their clothing. Really cool to just walk around and see whats been collected or forgotten about. The place has been open for more than 100 years!

I rented mess dress for OTS class 20-02. I am a reservist so this was the best option for me. At least I thought it was... I sat in a line for 3 hours waiting for the owner to write down measurements and he said he would hopefully have a mess dress for me to rent. Mind you this was on a Saturday when Paper 2 would be due Monday. I wasted hours not really knowing if I would even be able to rent the mess dress or not. Fast forward to pick up day and I waited in a line for another 2.5 hours to receive the rented mess dress. They had two employees for over 50 customers waiting in line. OTs that had already paid were told to go to the front of the line so everyone else had to wait until they all picked up their mess dress. I finally just walked in the back myself to see if my uniform was prepared - only about 50% of the OTs had prepared uniforms ready for pickup. The rest were being prepared frantically on the spot. I luckily found my uniform and walked to the front of the line to pay the $82 fee. I brought it back to the dorms only to find it smelled like a cat had been sleeping on it for about a year and it had cat fur all over it. There is no way it was washed before I received it... Hindsight is always 20/20 so fellow OTs let me save you the trouble. DO NOT RENT from here. Go ahead and save your time and trouble and spend the $500 and just buy the damn thing. It is not worth all the stress and poor customer service I received.

Basically it is a military surplus store selling new and (mostly) used uniforms. The prices I saw were as much as 20% more expensive than on base (across street). The place smells terrible (a cross between mold and cats) and if you are allegic to cats stay away!! There was a cat on counter and hair everywhere...very unprofessional.Would not recommend.Note: there is also a uniform tailor shop inside which i didnt use, but wouldnt recommend if you have allergies since the items they work on are out in the open.

Shinbaums has always given me great service. They carry a large inventory, and if they dont have something they will do their best to find it for you quickly and at a reasonable cost. They do alterations more quickly and more professionally than on base, and at a fraction of the cost.

Very helpful. Didnt mention theyd charge me for the medals. I followed their directions for sizing, when I got the mess dress the pants were too small and they sent out a bigger size immediately..... Although I was charge a second shipping fee for that, also not mentioned. Cufflinks and suspenders werent within regs but over all definitely would do business with them again.

Awful. Was given a males mess dress coat. Dirty. Poor service.

I went in and ordered 4 uniforms. I sized one pair and left the instructions to complete the order. When I picked the items up, I took a quick peak to ensure one of the ABUs shirt was correct and it was. I deployed the next week, when I arrived at my forward location, I realized there was one uniform that was a matching set. The other three had a noticeable difference in color, to the point I could not present a good image wearing them. I went through my deployment with old uniforms, not a huge problem, but not what I had planned for. When I returned, i returned the uniforms and asked them to either match the tops to the pants or a complete do over. I have been getting the run around for over three years now, I am going to pick them up today and use them to work around the house i guess. It is obvious they have no intent on making it right. Anyway, beware, I will never use them again and will make sure if anyone ask me about them to tell them of my experience.

We called from Birmingham to see if they had a particular size & pattern of pants. We were told yes, it is an item always in stock. We drove all the way down a week or two later just for this item. Didnt call again because I was told they always have them. I have had the same issue in town so thats why we made the trip. Not only did they not have the item like they said, they had very little of the pattern at all. The store is a dirty, disorganized butler building. Doesnt even look like a store. We had to had to dig through a box on the floor to look for items. No offer to help find what we were looking for, nothing. No one said boo the whole time we were there until we were walking out the door.

Best customer service I have experienced in a very long time. Great shopping experience.

I have been using Shinbaums for the last 10 years. I have since retired, however they have been sewing my sons scouting uniforms since 2008. They do excellent work!

Best store for military

I rented a mess dress for an event on base. The pants werent hemmed, there was cat hair and threads all over the MUCH too large coat, one of the studs was broken, and the whole suit smelled like a thrift store. I was so disappointed. When returning it I told the woman at the desk a few of the things that were wrong and she said you never know what youre going to get.I really dont recommended relying on these people if you need to look respectable at all. You never know what youll get.

Jim Bobs uniform is a good place to go shopping at I dont know any other place around here that does what he does at a good price and what he does for us so I do recognize people to go and I will continue on recommended Asian Bob unicorn

This place is awesome! I just took my hat and ABU blouse to get my new ranks sewed on. This was a 1/3rd of the price for twice the quality of sewing as I got on base with my other blouse. On base, they quoted me $6.40 and when I went to pick it up (3 whole days later!) they charged me $15.25 because it was $6.40 each rank plus a charge for having to take the old rank off! Im like they were some measley LT bars how hard is it take them off really. Anyway, this place says they dont do same day service but I went in at noon today, and I asked if they could at least just sew the rank on my hat, the nice man told me to come back at 5:00 so I returned at 5:10 and they had finished my Hat and my Blouse! Also, he had quoted me at $5.25, and when I went to pick it up he charged me $5.25!!! (A rare occurrence Im finding!) I am super thrilled with the service, and the atmosphere. I would be wary if you are deathly allergic to cats, there is a cute grey tabby kitty that roams the place :)

I rented a Mess Dress from here and the service and product was horrendous. Before you make the same assumption I did, the medals are NOT rented with the mess dress. I paid $62 the day I reserved the suit and was told it came with everything. The day I picked up the mess dress, the day before a banquet, I was given an extra $80 bill to purchase the medals. I would not have had such an issue with this if I was not treated like dirt during the whole process. They have cats and dogs inside the building and the place smells. The mess dress did not come with the right buttons and required Febreze before I could stand to wear it. I will never come back to this place.

Owner is terrific. The place may look a bit off the rack, however, great service and they know what theyre doing!

Great folks to work with when you need your uniforms updated

I had some patches sewn on my Air Force ABUs at Shinbaums. Have used them in the past with no problems, but last time one of the patches was somewhat crooked and just did not look right. My wife took the uniform back to have it fixed, thinking it wouldnt be a problem since we were semi-regular customers and, hey, its a local shop that relies on keeping its clientele (the military) happy. Well, the seamstress on duty was very snooty with my wife and actually said, well, if hes that picky, then hell just have to wait until tomorrow to pick it up. Which, was actually fine since I didnt need the uniform back right away and didnt ask for same day service anyway. It was the attitude. As if the lady was doing us some sort of big favor after we had paid them for a service. Well, clearly Shinbaums doesnt need my business. Its a shame, though since I try to support the local businesses if I can, but I guess Ill just use the AAFES service for my uniform needs from now on.

Showed up at 1020 am on November 8th and was told in the parking lot “I am going to lunch, nobody’s going to be in there”. What kinda of business is this ? Will take my business elsewhere.
