Being a military family and always moving to new places, one of the first places we look for is a Barbershop. Five Star was the first and will be the last shop we ever try here in Rhode Island. The haircuts are outstanding. What makes the place truly special is the barber and owner Gary. A veteran with a family oriented shop that still has that barbershop swag that welcomes all kinds of conversations. I take my 13yr old and 5 yr old there as well. My 5yr old son has a sensory processing disorder and NEVER sat still in a barber chair...until Gary cut his hair. He’s great with kids and works quickly. All in all, this place is great!

Just wanted a basic skin fade, nothing special. Hair cut came out terrible, the dude spent way too long cutting it, and was on his phone and watching TV the ENTIRE time. Wasn’t paying attention on cutting my hair at all which is why it took so long and came out so bad. Will never come back here and do not recommend.

Barber was late to open his own business... ok hair cut, nasty floor with hair and garbage from the day before. Talks too much with customers, no one is interested in your love life. Keep on cutting hair less talk.Maybe you need to update your working hours!It is my business if i am present, learn how to do your job without talking so much. Keep treating your business like you have the last word, you will end up with no customers. Garbage is garbage it is meant to be picked up. Before you close the night before do some housekeeping!If I 5 star everything then reviews will be irrelevant. My hotel experience while I was in Newport was 5 stars because they earn that, you in the other hand did not. Change you door hours, to reflect the actual hours.

My experience with my 2 boys was great, we walked in and immediately the guy cutting changed the tv from a cop show to a kids movie this was awesome as i have 4 kids. My boys both recieved great clean cuts and all the kids were given lollipops. I will be back

I am a regular customer and I always receive excellent customer service and great cuts! I recently took my son to Gary for his first haircut. It was a truly spectacular experience!! Gary gave him an amazing haircut, the other patrons were awed by his ability to handle a 14 mo old and the patience it takes to cut for one so young, when Gary finished they gave my son a round of applause. Its a good barber shop. Like from the movie barber shop. The man can cut hair well and the place has football and comfy chairs. Dont expect them to tell you how much the haircut is though. Just give them, or rather let them take your $20 out of your hand and youre good. I guess the privilege of culture exposure was included in the price.

Definitely the best barber I’ve found in the area. He takes his time and makes sure he gives you a great haircut. He’ll even tell you if he has a long line that you can come back later so you won’t have to wait in line. He’s also even bought pizza for his customers multiple times when I’ve been in there.

I have been to every shop on the island, then I found Gary @ fivestar. I read all his reviews and please disregard the 3 or 4 that are not 5 stars because this place was clean, with nice leather chairs & big screen. we watched football and talked sports and a short time later I got the best fade & line up I have received since landing in Newport a yr ago. I wont go anywhere else

As a white guy with dark hair, it’s hard for me to find a place where I can get a decent fade. Also, being in the navy, I travel a lot and when I go somewhere new the only thing I have to go off of are google reviews when looking for a barber. I’ve had a lot of bad experiences. My last hair cut in VA I got butchered. I had to wait a month for it to grow back to a proper length where it would be possible for it to be shaped the way I like. I took a chance when I went to this shop based on the reviews, I was very happy with my experience. I was in and out of the shop despite being third in line with a quality cut at a really fair price. He got me right at 5 star.

If you want a quality cut, clean fade, and awesome barber that takes his time, this is absolutely the place. If you want a risky, low quality haircut and an embarrassingly choppy fade, go ahead and pay 12$ plus tip elsewhere. I believe that a 20$ cut is more than fair for such great work, and fantastic customer service. On top of that, the leather couches and flat screen to watch while you wait make the time pass quickly as opposed to most barber shops where youll end up sitting in cheap uncomfortable chairs just waiting to get out. For the first time in months my wife approves my new cut, and that is a high standard to meet.

Stopped in on a Wednesday afternoon as a walk in and Gary got me in the chair right away. Best cut Ive had in a long time and great conversation. Waited for my uber after on one of the sofas while watching Netflix on the big screen. All around great atmosphere and an even better cut. Thanks again Gary! I have visited almost every other shop on the island before I found Gary @ fivestar. I had to wait about 20 min, he got me in the chair and I could instantly tell he was a true barber. My cut was done in about 25 min and it was a perfect fade and line up with no push back. We had a great conversation about football, The shop was clean and smelled good and I was able to relax in his leather recliners. he charged me $20 but I tried to pay him $30, he refused the tip and said he does not accept tips from first time customers. he prefers you come back for your next cut. that was a awesome touch, thank you Gary I will see u soon

Friendly and a good cut. I stopped and he wasnt open but was there taking care of some work at the shop. I said I would come back later and he said no need, he would cut my hair right then even though he wasnt open. A very nice guy who clearly cares about his customers and community.

I have been going to five star for almost 3 years now and by far the best barber on the island and I had been to all of the others before I came to five star. I always leave looking fresh. He always does a phonmenal job every time.

My son rather wait then go anywhere else if need be . The prices are very fair and the environment is calm, comfortable and nice and clean. No Combs and hairbrushes collecting in dirty solution bottles.

Theres a fine line with cutting hair and being a barber. Theres art, creativity and most of all patience. To actually care about your customer rarely goes unnoticed. And i can say with full confidence that i was taken care of; no doubt the best barber shop ive been to in years.

The barber who cut my hair messed up on the sides, cutting the left and right in entirely different profiles. Additionally, I asked him to take an inch or two off the top and ended up cutting off close to 4 or 5 inches, taking my hair from dropping close to level with my eye to not even touching my forehead.
