This is a really special place. We adopted here years ago and although she is crazy we love her. Everything was current (shots, spay, chipped) and the building and pet-housing was surprisingly beautiful and almost modern. The pets were all very well cared for and even the more depressed (craving a new home) babes were not also battling with grooming & tiny living quarters and you could feel that they were not feeling abandoned even in a shelter-type environment.

You have to make an appointment as they are only open for visitors every other weekend right now. Having said that, if you are looking to adopt please make an appointment and stop by. I wasnt expecting to adopt that day but I fell in love with two cuties and there you go. In most cases you can take them home the same day. I believe the adoption fee is normally 25 bucks which is amazing but this weekend every cat was only 5 dollars and that includes vaccinations spay and microchip. Please leave a donation for this great place! EDIT... APPOINTMENTS NO LONGER NEEDED

This place was fabulous! They really work with you to find a pet that will be a good match for you. They provide opportunities for you to play with the animals and get to know them. Once you have a few in mind they will sit down with you one on one to learn about you and provide you with the animals history. Their facility is beautiful as well. I would definitely return to this facility to adopt.

I lost my best friend Shadow on March 31st due to cancer. After he passed I felt completely lost and scared about how to get a new dog. Over the course of a month I visited about 5 shelters and met many dogs. I finally came across NKLA and met 2 dogs, first was named Loki a sweet and simple minded Husky Mix, second was Lulu Lemonade, a giant horse like German Shepard who was gentle and loved to play. I spoke with staff for about a week straight asking all the questions I could about the dogs. They where more tham happy to answer any questions or concerns I had about deciding between the two dogs. I eventually took home Loki, but my family fell in love with Lulu Lemonade as well so the next day we took her home as well! I really appreciate the staff at NKLA being so welcoming and helping us find the right dogs for us!

Also, when narrowing down the options they gave us the entire backgrounds for the cats, to make sure it was a good fit for both us and the cat. She was fully vaccinated, spayed and micro chipped.

We adopted our kitten from NKLA over Christmas last year. They were very busy with potential adoptive owners, yet they made the time to interview us thoroughly, and ultimately help us come to the right decision for the right animal. I’ve adopted three animals through shelters over the years—they seem to have little regard to finding a perfect match—not this shelter. I thank them for bringing our little Dory into our life.

NKLA is a wonderful place with amazing staff and volunteers. When I became a volunteer myself, the staff made sure I got the right training and a mentor volunteer showed me the ropes on my first day to make sure I felt comfortable. I saw that everyone works together to keep the place clean, and we make sure all the dogs are walked at least 2-3 times a day. Additionally, we also take the dogs to the yard, spend quiet time in the kennel with them, and take them on outings or overnights. This no-kill adoption center wants the best for the animals and ensures the dogs and cats go to the right family (we take notes on all the animals so you can ask for more information on specific animals). If you are looking for a new furry family member, this would be a great place to go! If you are looking to volunteer, this would be a great place to start since there are so many friendly people here who are willing to help!

If your looking to adopt a dog, especially a pit bull breed, this is the place to go. The facility is easily the nicest shelter I have ever been to. The reception area is welcoming and extremely clean. Same goes for the dog kennels which has soothing music playing to help keep the dogs feeling calm. Of course the majority of shelters have tons of pit bulls but NKLA has a video for almost every one of their dogs on Youtube. (For you cat people, there are lots of sweet cats available too) This gives you a chance to see the dog or cat and find out some details before you actually visit the shelter. Once you are there, everybody is extremely helpful and friendly. You can tell they really love what they are doing for the animals at this location. You also will have a chance to meet the dogs in nice meeting rooms one on one. On top of that, each dog has a thorough history on file that gives you tons of background on the dog. We ended up adopting a dog we didnt even see on video because we had no chemistry with the ones we were interested in. The one on one meetings with the dogs are the best. Parking is not the greatest but that is typical for LA. So if you are looking to adopt, definitely put NKLA on your visit list.

We went on Tuesday night when they had their $5 all you can eat pasta and had the meat sauce on it. We now know why its $5! The sauce was like tomato paste and a little water mixed together. It was very acidic and very bland and saw very little meat!! Where are the spices? The service was ok but we saw customers wait at the register and heard lots of laughter coming from I assume the kitchen. We got everything we needed from the servers but there were times we didnt see any of them for several minutes. I wish I could have said it was great!

I got my cat from here. She is a 3 year-old white and black calico short hair domestic breed. It took about 2.5 hours to adopt her and cost under $30. NKLA gave me her entire medical and behavioral history prior to adoption. They also gave me an opportunity to get to know her in a private room, along with a couple cats who I was considering. (They ended-up not being as affectionate as Plato, although less afraid.) They seemed to take good care of the animals, and the facilities were well-maintained and pleasing. They gave me a box for transport. There was a shop in the facilities where I bout the litter for later that day. The wait time to be seen by a representative was somewhat long but I liked their online system for the wait line.

Beautiful facility but unfortunately NKLA failed to list the two serious incidents (Bit a person in the face & killed a small dog) in the online profile of the dog I was interested in adopting. As a father of small children I would haven’t wasted my time (1hr in 405 traffic) or the staff’s time by visiting and meeting with an adoption counselor for the dog I was interested in. It was a real bummer for my family and I to find out these facts after spending 25 mins waiting to meet with an adoption counselor. In addition, I also understand that your facility probably cost more to run than a county facility but to charge up to $250 for the same exact dogs (Pitbull are the majority) seems odd. NKLA, please be 100% transparent on your online profile of the dog. It should not take me physically driving to your location and waiting for an interview with the adoption counselor to find out that a dog would be best suited for a calm environment with no kids. It’s not fair to adopters or the dog.

This adoption center is so amazing! The layout is rather home-esc and the staff are super friendly with the animals and guests! Today they had a (for lack of better word) “sale” where certain dogs and cats were a mere $25 dollars (most likely before certain fees) which is very cheap for animals in such great condition. I haven’t adopted from there but I’d imagine it’s a pleasant experience with them!My only concern is the set up for each “street” (their quaint little name for each line of kennels) is a little too diverse? There can be kennels with rather big dogs right next to a few small chihuahuas! Which may be fine but it makes for some loud interactions when you first walk in.

The dogs seemed happier and better cared for than many shelters in LA, however the adoption fee is much higher so it makes sense that the dogs would get more care. My issue with this place is that I was denied adopting a dog based on my income, despite the fact that I could prove Ive cared for my own dog for four years, and never had trouble paying a vet or grooming bill. I even offered to have someone give a written statement saying they would back me up financially if I for some reason couldnt pay for the dogs needs and was still denied. I understand having high expectations for someone trying to adopt a dog, but the dog I tried to adopt 2 weeks ago is still living in a box instead of having a loving home, solely because of how much money I make. I think its great they want to make sure their animals are going to capable owners, but they are turning away perfectly good owners only because they dont think they make enough money. If I had never owned a dog before, this would make more sense to me, but the fact that I could show every invoice from the last four years proving that I had no problem getting my dog to the vet on time, and paying for everything it needed, and was still told I wouldnt be a capable owner just because of my income is ridiculous.

Suzi Q was adopted by us March 6th. We had just lost our wonderful dog, Buddy who was now in heaven. We looked on line and found Suzi Q. Her head was tilted with the same look in her eyes as Buddy and I immediately fell in love with her. We drove from Carlsbad (3 hours) to see her. The people there were warm and friendly and the place was very clean. They brought Suzi Q to us and let us walk her on a leash. She was perfect for us. We adopted her then and there. The process went smoothly. We bought a pretty leash and she had already been given a chip and taken care of and was ready to go. She was happy. She has a mellow personality, perfect for my husband and I who are retired. I believe she is a Yorkie Terrier/Poodle mix, but it doesnt matter, she is wonderful as is. We were in a room with windows with Suzi Q when a volunteer asked to come in. She wanted to say good-by to Suzi Q. She said she was the most cuddly dog she had worked with at the shelter. She was right. Suzi Q cuddles with us all the time in our lap, in the bed, in the car and we love her and she loves us. Thanks to NKLA we found Suzi Q our love and she found us.

The people at Nkla are well intentioned but they were not honest about the behavior and health of the dog we adopted. They told us the dog was well behaved, good with cats, and then the dog killed the neighbors cat and he wasn’t well behaved. I remember calling them asking for help and the lady said “he’s your legal responsibility now” and then hung up on me. I understand why they lied, they were desperate to home a dog that was unlikely to be adopted but they really should have considered whether or not there was a good fit. Having seen other reviews on here, I get the impression that nkla has done this numerous times.
