I typically do my taxes with TurboTax. That is until I received a letter from the IRS stating that I owe them 15k from 2015. I went to my tax lawyer and he looked things over and told me to just pay. I prepared my 2015 taxes using Turbo Tax. Well, I must have done something wrong... the IRS certainly thought so! I was audited and got a tax bill for $9K..ouch. I went to Art Barrett to review my taxes and he was able to get the tax bill down to $1.6K. Although Im not happy to pay $1.6K, Im very happy not to pay $9K!!

After practicing law for 38 years, I know how to write and speak persuasively. When the IRS sent me a tax deficiency notice, however, my skills failed me. I prepared a detailed explanation of the error in the IRS’ computations and factual assumptions and prepared a book of supporting exhibits. The IRS replied, rejected my explanation with virtually no discussion, and added a 30 day deadline for me to pay the claimed deficiency. At that point, I turned this mess over to Art Barrett of Barrett Accounting and Tax LLC. Art read through my explanation and exhibits and then simply phoned the IRS to translate my legalese into “Tax Speak.” With that one phone call, and without further ado, the IRS dropped its deficiency claim against me.
