The setting in the heart of Waikiki is breathtaking. At any time, your just steps away from the beach. The staff is incredible, friendly and accommodating. Go for a swim every night at sunset and enjoy the views of Diamond Head. Go for a jog on the beach. The beds are comfortable and the rooms quiet. Breakfast was delicious and there’s a decent hotel gym. But remember, this is Waikiki so you’re paying steep prices at the Royal Hawaiian’s restaurants and spa and there are crowds everywhere - serenity is hard to attain here. Yet I’d still recommend to anyone for a few nights if they want a luxury splurge in the heart of Waikiki.

If you are looking to stay at a quality 5-star resort, do not stay here. When at the pool, it is tiny, and they arent letting anyone use the hot tub. Since the pool area is so small, they have minimal chairs, and instead of accommodating guests if they are full, they make you pay $250/day to sit on their premium chairs which literally just have pink cushions instead. Also, if you want to sit at the beach, they charge $60 a day. I have never stayed at an expensive 5-star resort for them to charge me to sit on the beach, especially when their pool area is so small. There was so much trash lying around the pool and no staff cleaning it up. They also didnt have any servers or staff checking on guest at the pool which is extremely common at 5-star resorts. The pool area also closes at 5 pm. The staff were also not welcoming and seemed like they didnt care about the guest. Our room was also small, outdated and dark. We were booked to stay at this hotel for four nights, but after the first night, we complained and left to stay at the Ritz Carlton, where we have been treated amazingly, and the room/amenities are beautiful and up to 5-star standards. While we were complaining at the front desk, the man next to us was also complaining since the hotel was not up to 5-star standards. Save your money and go somewhere else.

Awesome stay! The service and people at this hotel made all the difference. We celebrated my daughters birthday while at the hotel and the Surf Lanai (the restaurant) staff were so kind and accommodating, all the way from the host and hostesses to the waiter. They literally made us feel like we were the only ones there, even though they had many others they were waiting on and taking care of. My wife and I both commented afterwards that it is the people that make this place great. The accommodations are also very nice. The hotel has a great older feel to it, with all of the updated amenities and cleanliness you would expect from a luxury hotel. The beds and bedding were very comfortable and you definitely felt that you could relax here. Great job to all of the people that make this hotel such a great experience.

The Royal Hawaiian feels like a really special place and experience. I love the pink and the old grandeur. Great service. Great drinks at Mai Tai Bar. Wish they had separate line for hotel guests that are paying a resort fee. We didnt go to Azure because of the limited prix fixe menu. Great location. The private pool is limited in size but lots of seating with shade. Good option for visitors without children as its not fun for them. The shared pool with the Sheraton is great for families and children. Dont really recommend the shaded lounge chair reservations as theyre a little awkward it sit in. Shops have cute clothes and gifts. Even bought a new swim suit. My biggest complaint is that the bed and pillows were wayyyy too soft for my back. Ive never been so uncomfortable in a hotel bed before.

I have never experienced a place like the Royal Hawaiian. It is a wonderful place to stay for your first time in Hawaii.Having been built in 1927, it has the 1920s architectural charm with modern amenities. If you like to stay in a place with luscious gardens and great beach accommodations this is the place for you.The customer services is astounding and will go above and beyond to make your stay here an amazing experience. They didnt have GF options at their Cafe in the lobby, but the coffee and fresh squeezed guava juice made up for it. And my family really enjoyed their freshly baked ham and cheese croissants. 😋What is ideal about staying here is the location. Right on the beach and the garden walkways lead you right into the Royal Hawaiian Center, which I will say is the most gorgeous shopping center I have ever seen! Lots of stores and restaurants just beside the hotel!I will say one downfall is the small pool, however the umbrellas on the beach make up for it. Just be sure to reserve them in advance. And we do have access to the awesome kid friendly pool at the Sheraton next door. It is worth it if you have kiddos. If you want a truly unique experience in Hawaii, I highly recommend you stay at the Royal Hawaiian! You will not regret it!

Positive: The location on Waikiki is one of the best. Also, the grounds are absolutely beautiful. This was our 5th visit to the Royal Hawaiian and it does not disappoint. Negative: I would have liked some discounts on dining like other local hotels offer their guests. We ate at other hotels and restaurants in the area with more reasonable pricing. The room pricing with their breakfast included is a bit over the top.

The hospitality and kindness of the entire staff exemplifies the culture. From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed and pampered. Dinner at Azure was flawless and Jan made it special. Breakfast was also wonderful especially meeting Stanton. He gave us a lot of good helpful hints and recommendations. Dana in the Mai Tai Bar was so friendly and helped us when we were in a hurry and her shift was over. The valet noticed our luggage handle was damaged and had housekeeping fix it while we waited for an Uber. Just a fantastic place. Worth every penny.

We have stayed at the Royal Hawaiian off an on since the 1990s and it simply never disappoints us. We always stay in the historic part with a garden view and it is lovely and quiet. The calm hits you when you enter the gardens off the busy street just outside. The rooms a small as are the bathrooms due to its era in which it was constructed but they are well appointed and everything works. You feel transported to a refined and gentile time.

If youre looking for an old school historical place to chill and enjoy Waikiki, the Pink Palace fills the bill. Try getting a room in Maliana tower for the new luxury, original rooms dating from 1927 are a well maintained slice if Hawaiian history. Either way, staff is solicitous and attentive and youre a 5 minute walk from best dining and shopping in Honolulu. About 30-45 minutes from airport depending on traffic. This place is one of only two on Waikiki if youre interested in an upscale experience.

The Royal Hawaiian is an EXTREMELY OVERRATED HOTEL. Everything about our experience was awful. The rooms are incredibly small especially when most people aren’t staying in Hawaii for just a night or two and have to lug around belongings. The bathroom I had was probably the smallest I’ve ever seen and the beds were only doubles, definitely not ideal for sharing with another person. Due to it being an old hotel all of the vents interconnect so our room smelled like weed from a neighboring room one day and the next like someone’s perfume. The pool area is also extremely small and crowded. To reserve a beach chair you have to pay extra and wait in line super early in the morning. This hotel is definitely not worth the high price tag. The only upside is it’s location and the beauty of the old building .

Review №32

Definitely not worth the money. I’d give it 1 star, if there weren’t some peoples’ jobs on the line.We got the hotel for about $500/night through Costco - it was the same or cheaper elsewhere. We thought we got a “deal,” but were wrong. The $25 credit is per day and does NOT accumulate. There are definitely better deals giving you as much as $200/day on credit, but in the end, the front desk staff wouldn’t budge and took $50 off the entire 5 day stay (2 one day credits of $25 - again, this is misleading & honestly there is VERY LITTLE for $25 at the place). If we knew this, we wouldn’t have eaten their overpriced $38 eggs twice. The rooms are very gloomy and the lines are ridiculous to check in, for coffee or for breakfast. The beds are small as well. They also fail to give you and new shampoo or body wash and try to skimp on it when they can - we used the same ones for 5 days. Their lines are too busy to have anyone address your complaint. They’ll check you out in a heartbeat, but they are incredibly slow checking you in. It’s also deep inside some long alley that some companies and drivers are more reluctant to go to. So, it’s not convenient if you have older people in your group or someone has extra needs. We’ll definitely be looking to book at the Moana Surfrider next time after this experience. I’d rather pay extra for a better experience.

Amazing hotel! I chose this hotel because I wanted something that seemed more Hawaiian than just one of the cookie cutter high rise hotels and this place was great. The grounds and hotel are gorgeous and lush and I loved the pink theme throughout. We stayed in the tower with a balcony facing the beach/ocean and it was amazing. We ended up getting take out from restaurants for lunch most days and eating on our balcony because you couldnt beat the view. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Enjoyed the nightly free drinks (Mai Tais!) and appetizer that you get when you stay in the tower, as well as the free daily breakfast (though it was a bit limited due to COVID, but still good). Also reserved chairs/umbrella 2 days to really enjoy our beach days. We did both the pink umbrellas and the brown umbrellas and both were great, the ladies at the reservation counter and they guys that set up our umbrella were all very friendly. My husband rented a surfboard from the beach services as well and had a great experience. This place was a bit of a splurge from what we would normally do but it was totally worth it, highly recommend!

This hotel is right on the beach at what I think is the prime beach location on Waikiki. I like modern things and places, but this hotel made me fall in love with its charm and history. We ate breakfast every morning right next to the beach. We went next door to the Sheraton and rented the pool loungers and loved those. This hotel feels very peaceful and secluded, yet at the same time close to everything you would want in a trip to the Waikiki area. We will most likely go back again--maybe as soon as next year. Staying at this hotel at the moment, this is the third day out of 7. Dealing with the rude staff at the reception desk and the Mai Tai bar has been frustrating so far, getting assisted or seated is just plain slow. I do not understand all the positive reviews for this place. In the three days we have stayed here they have run out of beach towels, we will not be able to rent beach chairs all week, also at the moment AC is not working in the whole building and front desk is saying its fixed and working slowly... Its been hours and it is not working at all, room is over 80 degrees. Our room is also just plain dirty. We would be ok with some of these issues if this wasnt a 500$ a night claimed 5 star hotel. Go somewhere else and preferably not Hawaii as you can probably get way more for your money elsewhere. Go somewhere you will be appreciated as a customer. We would go home immediately if this wasnt prepaid.

[originally made 13/6/2014] was quite a surprisingly bad experience here but it was probably the unlucky wild card. i stayed here for a four days and there were two major problems. so: we stayed at the historic part of the hotel, which was nice except the fact that there was a massive ant outbreak. it felt disturbing because it gave me a bad feeling that the rooms are dated and not renovated.so, day three, they let us have a room in the malani tower. problem two began here because it smelt like there was cigarette leftovers all over the place. as i hate smelling cigarettes that was a problem too. A redeeming part is the historic significance of this place and how its all in all a pretty cool setting. the rooms itself had flaws which prevented the rating from being more than two stars.

I really wanted to love this hotel, but wowwww was it a waste of money. We came on our family vacation to celebrate my Dad’s retirement and every single day we had to wake up at 5:30/ 6 AM just to TRY and get a chair at the beach or the pool. It’s impossible to get reservations at the restaurant, you get attitude if you want to order anything from the bar or the one pool attendant. You didn’t feel like you were it Hawaii, you felt like you were at Volcano Bay at Universal with all of the noise, screaming sprinting children. Do not be fooled by the photos ( my sister was) nothing is renovated, amenities are small and dated, and the staff is wildly indifferent. I was shocked when I found out this was an Autograph Collection hotel. If you want a day in the city for shopping- I recommend staying on the North Shore and driving in for the day. We also visited Alohilani if you really want the city vibe- world of difference! Definitely don’t waste your money at your he Royal Hawaiian.

Pros: Historic hotel with GORGEOUS architecture, beautiful views, amazing Mai Tai Bar, and tons of Island, WWII, and local history. You cannot visit Honolulu without seeing the Royal Hawaiian. Our rooms were spacious (we had a suite on main floor) and the grounds are beautiful kept up. Nothing wrong with this hotel, especially if you love history and seeing people from around the world visiting--especially Japan, and it is sad to see less Japanese tourists because of COVID. I hope they return.Cons: Terrible check-in experience. We ordered some Hawaiian flower leis months ago via the concierge, they never arrived. They woke us up early in the morning the next day to try to deliver them and we cancelled the order. Woke us all up from jet lag. Our scheduled airport charter also never arrived, waited an hour at Honolulu International with heavy bags, nobody arrived. Barely gave us our money back. Second, the check in process was abysmal. Absolutely terrible and very slow, not given a speedy experience and the staff were probably overwhelmed, anxious/stressed, definitely a big downturn in customer service since COVID. The valet was also not helpful and slow. The only people who were on top of it were the room cleaning service folks, they were supportive, kind, accommodating to time and left our room spotless every time.In short, great hotel, but management needs to step things up! Been here for a day and the seems to be chronic shortages of staff, pool availability, beach loungers etc. Check in was a 45 minutes wait - not what you expect at a supposed luxury resort after a 10 hour travel day with a 2 year old - no apology. Spending 50 minutes in line to get a beach lounger at 8am is not what I like to spend vacations doing....It didn’t get any better, the service and interest from staff in general was minimal. That being said the manager of one pool bar by the beach was super nice and really accommodating of our 2 year old.The pool situation was a fiasco - the whole queue for an hour and then see what is left (if anything) or stand in line for an hour before they open is absurd. Online booking? What made it worse is that people would reserve loungers and not use them for most of the day. This obviously was a huge inconvenience and annoyance to other guests - no one at the hotel seemed to care when I raised it.There was also no business center which I found very strange for this kind of luxury hotel.

Positive: Proximity to the beach. Negative: I selected a room with a garden view and they put my guests in a room overlooking a rooftop.I would have preferred not having to go back to the front desk to ask them to correct the error in the room selection.

Cheona checked us in. A condescending receptionist is not the way you want to start your vacation. She did the minimal but got us our room key. My family was exhausted from the travel and the time change. For her I would give the whole property a one star. But then the bellhop WAYE cheered our spirits up with the excitement of us starting our vacation. All the Vallet were so helpful and friendly made tipping worth it. The rooms were okay since we spent most our time out of the hotel. Room bathroom was small. The location was prime to Waikiki but trust me when I book a future Oahu Vacation I will skip booking on Waikiki it is so packed with tourist. Concentrated area. Love Oahu but the amount of people on the island for tourism is intense.

If you enjoy historic hotels with lots of character, this is definitely for you. Its public areas are full of curated displays about its interesting history - plus a good array of boutiques that you can browse while strolling the thoughtfully designed and decorated halls. The views from my oceanfront room over Waikiki were amazing. The manager was immensely helpful, genuine, and friendly. The pool area is small and there arent as many amenities or updates as newer hotels but thats part of the charm. Make sure to get the Pink Pancakes from the Mai Tai bar. They are, hands down, the best pancakes Ive ever tried. If youre looking to experience a hotel with a storied past, staying at least one night here will be well worth it!

Worst place ever! You CAN NOT TRUST the cleaning staff there! I had all my medicine stolen and after confronting the guy, he of course denied it . I had to call the police and file a report. Mean while the management didn’t even apologize or say anything to make me feel better. I live 7 hrs away. No meds and no dr. They’ve done nothing to help me. And on top of that a week ago another customer lost 1500 in cash from the cleaning staff also. She also filed a report and still nothing. They don’t care about you, all they want is your money. A/c sucks, beds are terrible .Save your money and go somewhere else. I had to go all the way to the hospital to be seen and get my meds. Very hurt, the management did nothing! Don’t stay here!!

Great historic hotel with lots of cool facts and features in an amazing spot right on Waikiki Beach!! Love love love this area. Will definitely come back. Clean rooms. Front desk at check-in (night time) didnt seem to be the most knowledgeable or willing to help, didnt have to interact too much after. Go Pro rental is a huge plus as well as the fact that there are many complimentary activities( Lei making, hula dance lessons, ukulele lessons, Aqua Zumba and others- available on different days) that you can participate in that are held at the Sheraton next door. Also really love the fact that Royal Hawaiian guest can use the pools at the Sheraton. Family-friendly area as well.

Hotel was ok, got upgraded to a suite but it was still a small room with a seating area. The bathroom is so small as well. Their pool is laughable because of how tiny it is. They say you can use the pool at the Sheraton. You can use the big pool, but they dont specify that you cant use the infinity pool which was annoying.

The pool is a joke. The free continental breakfast sucks, dont order the omlet unless you want to pay $35 for a couple of eggs and a little bacon. A $50 resort fee yet each beach chair costs you another $50/day.This is a 3 star hotel at 6 star pricesOn the positive side, this hotel is perfectly located and all staff are very nice. You cant get a better Waikiki location.

First when we checked in night time. Bathroom floor was all water. We called desk they didn’t even apologize or change room. They fixed next day when we are at beach . They keep double charging make sure check your bill. When we checked out we got final bill. After came home they charge resort fee and they said we forgot the charge it at final bill. What kind of business they doing I don’t understand. They are very unprofessional. I really don’t recommend . Go to other good name hotel..
