I love this crew at Pinch-a-Penny! I dont even live in Gainesville any more but when I called them for advice on my new pump, Joseph was so very helpful. I wish I lived close enough to have them right next door. I recommend them 100%.
I am looking for a pool guy that can convert my in ground pool into a salt water pool, and up grade the pump, make it a smart punp
I have been going to the store on 75th for the past 2 years and have purchased a new pool heater, new pool pump, all my chemicals and various pool toys. Today I went there and bought a 25 pound bucket of tabs a a pool float. I asked about the weekend special of receiving $5 for every $50 spent and was told that I needed to bring in the flier. I know the store has a copy of the flier that they could have used but choose not to and maybe it is the principle, but that is no way to treat a customer and I have chosen to never give my business to them again. Loyalty can go a long way for both parties.
Their service is fast and cordial.they always help you to your car with the heavy stuff with a smile.
My pool would have been filled with dirt by now if it wasn’t for Pinch A Penny. Thank you!
Service was just ok. No smiles, no thanks for your buying there. Had the products but not a welcoming place.
We have been Pinch a Penny customers for 5 years. This summer we were extremely disappointed with their service. Although they did eventually get it right, it too 4 visits and nearly a month. First visit they said our motor in our pump was bad and looked it up and said it had been replaced two years ago which was the life expectancy of the motor since it was made in China. Turns out later that it was just over 1 year. System did not work after putting in new motor. Told that they had a bunch of bad motors come in. Another 10 day wait for a time they could come out and replace the motor. Again worked for 15 minutes and stopped. The pump was very hot to the touch. Another week later. Put in motor again and this time said the impellar was bad so tech replaced that. Same thing again 15 minutes and quit. Called the store and were told that we needed to find an electrician because it was not the motor. My husband is an electrician. He took the pump apart and could find no reason for the over-heating of the motor. Took the motor to a competitor. They took apart and showed us that the installed impellar was the wrong size for our pump motor. We went to store again and this time we were very upset. The next day they installed a new motor and the right size impellar. We are grateful they made it right, but still unhappy with the loss of the pump for nearly a month and the need to have a showdown in the store to get the service we expected on the first visit.
My remote control on my pool quit so I had it replaced with a new updated system. Jay came out within a few days and installed everything. It was an extremely good experience. The world needs more people like Jay.
Janessa came out and it was the best experience possible. If you have any problems whatsoever with your pool, please have Jay handle it! You will not regret it! Highly knowledgeable, kind and is relentless in finding out your pools issue!I highly suggest her!Kirk
Called the store for help to change out my neighbors pool timer, the owner got on the phone and gave us step by step how to get it wired correctly. He spent over 30 minutes helping us. Because of his generosity on giving us his time he has earned 2 new customers for life. Thanks again
Family owned business that provides great services at fair prices. I have spoken with the owner, Larry several times on different issues and he always is so helpful and knowledgeable and doesn’t try to oversell. He is really a “hands on” owner that knows the business. You can’t get the help on the internet! So nice to go into a store and actually have them help you. Very professional- would highly recommend for chemicals and if you need your pool resurfaced.
New home owner with pool and the technicians that came out were fantastic, very knowledgeable and helpful. Eveytime i have been in the store, everyone is so helpful.
Very helpful very knowledgable great service very clean facility Would recommend to anyone
The outdoor built-in gas grill that came with our house died. My husband has wanted a nice outdoor kitchen for quite some time but it was always too pricey. The estimated price from Pinch A Penny was very reasonable. We were quite impressed with the quality and attention to detail provided by the builder/installer - Tom. FYI - We were not in a rush to have the kitchen built by a specific deadline so it took a bit before everything was completed. All in all, the Blaze grill products are fantastic and the kitchen exceeded our expectations while staying within the estimated budget.
Friendly helpful staff
Great place wonderful people, highly recommended Mr Jospeh the Manager he is very helpful and super nice. I never go anywhere else, been coming here for 6 years.
I needed service on my pool equipment and Pinch-a-Penny sent servicepersonJay who was the most efficient and helpful I’ve ever seen. She diagnosed the problems, was carrying everything needed on her van, made the repairs and cleaned the chlorinator. Most importantly, she showed me each step explaining things so well. Having owned my own business for years I can truly say she is a jewel of an employee. Thanks to Pinch-a-Penny!
Had a pool teaching service come out to my house. Was very informative and staff is knowledgeable on everything pool related. Special thanks to Olivia (I believe that was her name) for explaining everything to my wife and I. Great experience. Will only use this location for any Gainesville pool needs!
Helpful, quick
Pitch A Penny helped me learn to service a swimming pool. Through the advice and direction of their staff, I’ve been able to keep the pool clear, month after month, year after year. A special thanks goes out to Chelsea Davis, as with all the staff at Pitch A Penny. They have always been courteous and knowledgeable with solving any problems I’ve encountered, from equipment issues to the chemicals needed to keep the pool properly maintained. I highly recommend Pitch A Penny to anyone that takes care of their own pool.
Horrible customer service. It took 3 phone calls and an internet survey to get the service department to return my call. When I did get a call back We set an appointment for Friday 6/26. I drove up from Orlando to meet Tom. It was only when I called at 12:30 to check on the appointment did I find out Tom was not coming. I don’t believe I would have ever gotten a call If I hadn’t check in.
Jay did a fantastic Job installing my pool heater! Thanks so much for your speedy, friendly service. 5 stars all around 👍
I would highly recommend Gainesville‘s pinch a penny. Larry responded immediately and provided excellent service for our pool concern. Our pool is running better than ever and we are hiring him for the weekly care and maintenance of our pool!
Larry and his staff are very knowledgeable and professional. They have always been ready to help me, even as I travel for work. If I have an issue, they respond and quickly. They resurfaced our pool and it turned out beautifully. Couldnt be happier with the service we have received.
As a business owner I know how to handle people and all the employees I have worked with in pinch a penny are very knowledgeable. Chris usually tests my water when I have it sent in due to a busy schedule, but I have recently been bringing it in myself to have it tested and the women that tested it,Olivia, was amazingly nice and always had a smile on her gorgeous face. The only downside is I think the store looks a little bare, they should build a model tank to show operation of vacuums and other products but its just a suggestion to show a more hands on approch but anyways I like the store and will probably keep shopping there.
I commend this place for hiring teenagers to do the heavy lifting. I say lets improve on the management side of things seeing as their language was a little well a lot loud and inappropriate for a business setting. One guy working there was beyond knowledgable about so much of my pool system that I was so impressed by. My pool cleaner doesnt even know the answers to. So i was impressed and the shelves were stocked well and a strong willingness to help. :-) Good job Pinch A Penny Pool!
Great and knowledgeable staff
My family has been a customer of this pool store for over a decade (even before their new location opened up). OVER A DECADE. Not anymore!!! I had my son pick up 6 jug refills of chlorine on his way home from the school. When he got home, I helped him take them out of his car. We both noticed a huge spot of chlorine in the back of his car. Then he looked down and realized it had gotten all over his tennis shoes when he was putting it in his car. He was devastated. Now let me also say that I have had a similar experience in my own car, but it was because the lid wasnt on tight when they gave it to me. I was also upset about that (my car has a black interior and a lot nicer) BUT because I hadnt checked personally that the lids were on tight before I left the store, I did not complain. Flash forward to today when this happened to my son because of a total error on their part. The leak was so bad that we put it down in the grass and it drained out within 10 mins. After cleaning up the car as best as we could, we went up to discuss it with the pool store. Immediately when I told them that their jug leaked all over my sons car, the owner got defensive and accusatory. Never ONCE did he say Im sorry that it happened. He did put some neutralizer on my sons car so that it hopefully wouldnt get any worse but then said extremely disrespectfully, Well, what else do you expect me to do? I was so taken a back by the disrespectful tone! I said, What about his shoes?! He acted as if they were just shoes and I should get over it. Then he told me that his store NEVER lets leaking jugs out of the shop. I said, So are you insinuating that he did this on purpose or it was somehow his fault?!!! I said it happened less than 30 mins ago and we came straight back here! It was leaking when it left your shop!!! He then demanded to check his surveillance footage. I said great and gave him the exact time it happened. ALSO, when we went inside the closest cart to the door had a huge wet chlorine mark on it. I said, Look that is probably the cart he used that your salesman rolled out to him. He said, Thats possible, but I couldnt prove it. He kept saying, what did I expect him to do? He told me people try to take advantage of this all the time. I said, Im not trying to take advantage and told him we have been customers for a long time. I also tried to explain to him just how disrespected I felt by everything he was saying to me and how he was treating my son and I. Again, he never apologized just oozed a continuous amount of condescending remarks. I explained to him that if he would have showed even ONE IOTA of remorse and didnt act like I was crazy, then I would have taken a new bleach container and left! But it was truly the way he spoke to my son and I, customers for over a decade, that I couldnt get past. I felt EXTREMELY disrespected! He did end up writing me a check for $160 (which was after he watched the video, which he never let me see, and Im sure couldnt deny how bad it was leaking when it left his shop after watching that). Also, for the record, I only asked him to replace the shoes which I paid $60 for but I just said lets call it even at $50. I never even asked for damage reimbursement for the car. When he gave me the check he again condescendingly said, There, now you can go out to dinner on me too. It was not about the stupid money! It was about respect, and clearly he had none for me.Customer beware!!!!!! Check your jugs before you leave the store because they do not check them as carefully as they should!!! And they will make you feel like scum of the earth if you call attention to a genuine error on their part.
Each time Igo to store Chris or Chelsi each time they do an exlent service they both are very knowledgable and very helpfull got bless them
Great people to work with.
UPDATE: AFTER WRITING THIS REVIEW, I RECEIVED A CALL FROM BOTH THE STORE MANAGER AND THE STORE OWNER. MR BROCK AGREED TO REFUND OR EXCHANGE THE DEFECTIVE VACUUM. WE WERE ALSO INFORMED THAT HAYWARD IS INDEED HAVING ISSUES WITH THE PARTICULAR VACUUM WE PURCHASED. WE WERE ABLE TO RETURN THE DEFECTIVE VACUUM AND PURCHASE A DIFFERENT MODEL WHICH IS WORKING EFFECTIVELY.Until yesterday, I also would have given this store a nice review. After all, they were always happy to test my water and then take my money for anything I needed. I am a loyal customer. I have spent 2,500 on a big green egg and rolling cart, numerous big green egg accessories, the charcoal as needed and all of my pool supplies and chemicals. Of course they were nice. You really learn the character of a store, and its employees, when something goes wrong, and this is why I give them one star! I purchased a $400 pool vacuum on 4/23/16. From day one it did not work properly. (After 10 years, this was the 3rd time replacing one. They are simple. You plug it into the wall and it vacuums.) The hoses on this vacuum are flimsier than before and they kink. I called the store and they asked me to clean my filter. Didnt work. Then they said I needed to replace the filter. Didnt work. Then they thought I had the wrong hose plugged into the wall. Didnt work.. By now, all of the hoses were kinked. They thought the hoses were defective and asked me to come get new hoses. Same thing,...kinks. Then they asked me to adjust the skimmer valve because they thought there was too much suction. I did that multiple times trying to find the right adjustment. Now my vacuum hose twists and the vacuum never leaves the side of the pool.I called yesterday and spoke with Chelsea. She initially empathized with the hassle and asked me to bring it back to the store for a replacement. I drove all the way to Gainesville and lugged the vacuum into the store. Meanwhile, the owner, Larry Brock, sees me on the security camera that he monitors from home and calls her to ask what was going on. He asked her when I purchased the vacuum and told Chelsea that because it had been two months, the vacuum (which hasnt worked since day 1) is now un-returnable. I am literally one week past the two month mark. THE ONLY REASON IT HAS BEEN 2 MONTHS IS BECAUSE I HAVE JUMPED THROUGH EVERY HOOP THEY HAVE ASKED ME TO.I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, Pinch A Penny headquarters, and the headquarters for Hayward . I WILL NEVER SPEND ANOTHER PENNY IN THIS STORE!!!
Been a customer for over 17 yrs the staff has always been knowledgeable and courteous .The owner Larry will go out of his way to make things right. As far as pricing are they more expensiveyes they are but your paying for something that you wont get at those places and thats great service.
I recent had Pinch a Penny resurface my pool. They did a great job. I have been doing business with them for about 20 years. They have always treated me well.
Good pool store. I have been getting my pool supplies here for years. Fair prices, excellent service, and knowledgeable staff keep me coming back. They have everything Ive ever needed for my inground and aboveground pools and hot tubs.
Very helpful and good prices.
Excellent service and well stocked store!!
Great service, very knowledgeable
Seems pricey but thats probably normal for pool supply shops. Nice store, inventory, and customer service.
The Good: Great people at the store. They are nice, polite and willing to help you. The folks there know a good amount about your pool and fix it. Particularly there are two folks (sorry I forgot their names), one is a Supervisor/Manager lady and the other is a tall young chap with glasses. These two are the BEST. I brought my pool from green to clear with their help and suggestions: purely DIY.They have a lot of stuff you might need for the pool. They also have a pool equipment repair section. The Bad: Other than those two, Im sorry to say the knowledge about the equipments, effectiveness is not that great. Here is my experience, that stopped me from going back to the store again:I got sold a Pool Cleaner assuring its the right fit. When it didnt run the next day, their Senior told me I was sold the wrong product and that wont work for me. When I tried to return it, I was told I have to pay 20% restocking fee!! Why should I bear the burden of a wrong sale? I was to either take the money (less 20%) or buy something else from the store. Thats $500 you are talking about. I had to buy a new cartridge filter that I didnt need now. And guess what, that was the last purchase/visit I did at Pinch a Penny. Great way to loose a customer!Thankfully, their competitor opened shop just around the corner! I think they are willing to do a lot for customers and that could mean more business for them!
It suck
It was great to get help to clean our pool to swim from Pinch A Penny!
Great service, great prices wonderful support
Original post (supplement follows): Warning: This place is not authorized to do warranty repairs on the Hayward salt systems they sell. My opinion is to purchase equipment from people who are authorized to honor the warranty on that equipment.Prior reviewer said theyre good at selling chemicals, not so much on service or knowledge about the equipment they sell. I certainly witnessed the latter when I overheard someone training several new members of their sales staff.Add a failure to take responsibility for their screw-ups to the list.Had them out six weeks ago to replace a flow valve whose wire had broken off. (Freestanding, not even zip tied to something else!) Repair person started criticizing the installation of the system until he remembered PAP did the job. Paid $95 for a 15 min service call to replace a $90 part. No other check of the system, including no look at the salt cell itself. System malfunctioned severely after repair. PAP wouldnt come out to look at it for five weeks until we agreed to pay for a second service call. Said the malfunction was in a warranted part of system, which they were not authorized to honor. (I acknowledge they did not charge for the second call.) Gave me a bad phone number for an authorized repair place but I was able to track it down. When I paid the labor on the authorized warranty repair, it turned out that the part Pinch-A-Penny installed was DEFECTIVE, already showing corrosion after a month in service. System works fine after the proper repair, just as it always did before PAP put their hands on it.PAP cost me $105 for the service call I wouldnt have needed if they didnt install a bad part and if theyd had any clue about the part being bad when they came out on the second visit. Also cost me far too much time and aggravation, far too many wasted visits to their store to try to resolve this matter.Person who did the warranty repair recommended Backyard Water and youd better believe were going to give them a try.Supplemental to Owners reply:Since you know who I am, why didnt you call me about this instead of seeking a web battle? Thats not how a reputable business treats customers. It would also help to get your facts straight. Weeks after? Had we been informed? Better check with your staff before you post plainly inaccurate info. How were we supposed to know the system had crapped out until we came back from ten days out of town and saw our previously clear pool turn cloudy? The authorized repair person inspected the cell itself -- which PAP didnt do on a $95 service call -- and complemented us on the attention we must have paid to the pool chemistry, given how clean the cell was (a cell your people wanted me to unhook and bring into the store, which would have been a worthless effort).Even if true (and it isnt), why did PAP argue with me for close to four weeks about whether the system needed a follow up?The defective flow switch was retained by the authorized repair party for return to Hayward. What were out is the money we paid for the second service call, one that wouldnt have been necessary if (a) PAP installed a part that didnt already show signs of corrosion, and (b) PAP took my report of the problems seriously, issues I raised with PAP more than a month ago.
