These guys were fabulous! Pulled in due to a low oil light and was about to drive to the twin cities. They took care of us in 10 minutes, Randy was very kind, friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend! If I lived here I would definitely be back.
You get what you pay for. (In a good way.) Weve been Thompsons customers for 10 years now, and were still happy with them.We call them when we need a tow, and they tow us. We set up an appointment when we need an oil change or a light fixed, and they change our oil or fix our light. We call them when something isnt working, and they run diagnostics and tell us whats wrong, then ask what we want them to do. They call us if they find something else that needs fixing and ask if we want them to do that, too. Theyve NEVER done the work without asking first. We have never had any complaints about the quality of their work or their reasonableness. We also have never had to take our cars to a different shop to repair something Thompsons has repaired. Two specific instances Id like to note:1) The first time I went in to pay for my repairs, a man with a thick accent and several kids was in front of me. His car would take some time, and he didnt have much money. (Theyd been discussing a payment plan when I walked in.) The lady behind the desk called him a cab and gave him cash to pay for it. (As I understood it, they usually had one of their people drive clients home, but either that person was busy or there wasnt enough room in the vehicle for all the kids.) This has stuck with me.2) In mid-2020, we got two new tires at a different place (Duluth Tires) which had a slow leak. We assumed the tires themselves were bad and went to Thompsons in early 2021 to get new ones after a cold snap made those two tires go flat. Thompsons, instead of selling us new tires, told us that the tires were fine but the other place hadnt cleaned and sealed them properly. They offered to do that, which would be much cheaper than new tires, and we agreed. There may be anecdotes of woe from unsatisfied customers, but those are merely anecdotes. The bulk of our experience with Thompsons has been positive, as has that of our family members (my brother feels like hes cheating on Thompsons by using a shop in walking distance from their house). Weve found them to be honest, timely, and good at their job.If youre very concerned about money, or have a limit to how much you can afford, ask to be quoted prices upfront and kept in the loop on any extra charges (they usually do this, but no harm in asking). And ask about payment plans if you cant afford a lump sum. Communicate your needs and expectations clearly, and have Thompsons write down any special requests. They are not unreasonable and will treat you fairly.
DO NOT EVER GO TO THOMPSON’S T-EXPRESS ON 27TH AVE IN DULUTH!! THEY WILL SCAM YOU! 3 days ago I went to go get an oil change, got that done. 2 days ago I went in to get my front and back left side blinkers fixed. Instead of fixing my blinkers they replaced SEVEN bulbs WITHOUT EVEN TALKING TO ME ABOUT IT!! And of course, didn’t fix the blinkers. When I called that day when I made the appointment they told me that that would cost about $25-$35. I ended up paying $75.81 for SEVEN bulbs that they did not even talk to me that they were doing instead of fixing the blinkers. Yesterday I went in to get the blinkers fixed because they failed to do it the day prior.. they took 2 HOURS to fix my blinkers. That ended up being $253.39!! It was $253.39 because they also did another oil change and since they did not do the blinkers the day before they took off $74.34 (good guy discount). So in less than TWO days they did another oil change saying that I told them that I wanted another one done. Without talking to me again they did the oil change. I just got back home from going there confronting the owner and asking for money back and he was extremely rude and very very terrible customer service. Instead of refunding me for most of what they messed up on and did, the guy gave me a free oil change card. He told me he is very good with his customers but I hear other. MULTIPLE people in the last few days has told me that this has happened to them too that Thompson’s did not talk to them about what they were doing with their car, and charged them for it!!! I AM VERY MAD!OH, AND TOO ADD... they had to take out my whole Dash yesterday just to fix my blinkers. And now a piece of my car won’t go back in on the dash (second picture). PLEASE SHARE THIS TO MAKE OTHERS AWARE TO NOTTTTTT GO TO THIS TERRIBLE PLACE!!
Car broke down on the highway, rolled into thompsons t cause it was the only place I could go without a tow. Ill pay for a tow next time. They had my car for 2 days, 900$ later they said they fixed the problem. I mentioned how the price was high, and the mechanic told me im lucky im not him cause he has it way worse “had to pay 2 grand for my truck” like what?! What kind of mind set is that? Then to make matters worse, my car broke down with the exact same problem on my way to the cities a day later. My guys in the cities fixed it no problem. Do they even test drive here?? Ill never go again.
Scandalous tow truck drivers. I used to use this place until it was 105 to get keys out when locked them, well Ford, in ignition while running while working myself. 90 then because he decided to be scandalous and wanted 15 because he went down to canal Park instead of where I was in harbor highlands. Spent a few thousand over the years there. Sorry Jeff, hope you have better ones now but never again
Great service, always fix our vehicles on time. Sarah is a dear to work with
Bad mechanic shop that spoiled my vehicle while doing oil changed, Gave me qoute of $1105 to fix what they spoiled, Another honest and reliable mechanic able to fix my vehicle less cost of 400 bucks...Friendly appearance, bad service, Beware!!!
Weve had several services to our Nisson, fair prices and Professional workmanship!
Great service and friendly helpful staff as always
I had a flat on a Saturday. Most places were closed. Thompson weekend guy met me in 20 minutes and fixed my at very quickly.
Always great service been going here for 10 years. Well priced also.
Want an honest mechanic that won’t overcharge you and will go the extra steps to get you on the road? Look no further. We were passing through Duluth, and Randy took care of us when three other Duluth mechanics we called had either left their shops early for the day or wouldn’t see us because it was too close to closing times. He didn’t overcharge us or make up fake issues and charged us a super reasonable rate. Probably saved me hundreds and a headache.
Randy was amazing. Helped my daughter on labor day. Thank God for Randy being able to help with her tires
A bit pricy for labor, but you get what you pay for. Great work and they will try to save you money when they can. Friendly and helpful mechanics. The front desk person is a little rude on the phone, but he does a good job otherwise.
Awsome place to go good people work down there awsome service!!
Very Fast! We had a completely flat tire, stuck in a parking lot. They picked us up, patched our flat tire and we were back on the road in 45 minutes. Super friendly staff. Highly recommend!
Nathan told me that he could order the parts I needed to fix my own vehicle. For six spark plugs, a plug wire set, and two oxygen sensors, they were going to charge me $314. This was JUST for the parts, not for labor. I bought these parts from Advance Auto for $156. Im not impressed.
Honest shop. Have had my oil changed here since I bought my truck new. Have had other work done too. Always fair and honest with me. Being open on weekends is a bonus too!
Called for a quote on a rear wheel bearing assembly. with labor and part it was $100 MORE then 10 other mechanics I called on the same day for the exact same thing. I told the gentlemen on the phone this info and he wanted to correct and said they are prob just quoting the bearing and not the full Hub assembly. No sir... I know what I am talking about regardless of being a woman or whatever. He seemed like a nice guy, called me back with the quote... that is why I gave them a 2.
Always an excellent experience
Well we will see.black Friday sale I hope
Will do the job cheaper than a lot of places. They also check other things and, let you know what is wrong or need for free with you asking. They do a really good job 👍 on very 👌 thing.
Great repair and quick but not so good calling back when left messages
I highly would not recommend this company. The guy who owns it lies and scams people. Honestly the worst auto body place Ive ever had to deal with.
Awesome they take care of me everytime.
I wish I got the names of the man and woman who helped me today, I am so grateful for the time they spent on my car. Thank you for checking things so thoroughly. It was such a relief to find a good mechanic on a Sunday, on the last day of my trip to Duluth.
So thankful they were able to tow us and put in a new starter so quickly. Were on vacation and they made our day. Great service, friendly people, overall terrific experience. Thank you!
Fast service, every time. And they always call me with the cost of the fix before they tear into it, which I really appreciate. They been fixing my stuff for years now.
Great car service! Honest! Fast! Personal service, not like the corporate disinterest you get at the big box places. Thanks for a number of great experiences guys!
Scammer
Very fast to respond just pricey
Despicable
Our son is going to college outside of Duluth. Over Christmas he left his car at a downtown parkade for over 3 weeks and flew home to Canada. He returned on Sunday and when he started his car, a power steering light appeared on his dash. We noticed that Thompsons T-Express was open on Sunday and phoned to see if they could look at it. They got his car in immediately and quickly got him on the road and didnt charge him. Being so far away, we really appreciated the help they provided and would recommend their service to anyone.
Towing was quick and easy, but repairs were more expensive than they should have been. In addition to being overcharged, only the immediate problem in my car (broken belt) was fixed, not the underlying problem which caused it in the first place (oil leaking over the belt). Customer service was excellent over the phone but less than desired in person. Would not recommend
Disappointing! I set up an appointment with them to leave my car at their facility for a friend to pick up 3 days in advance. They said great! their rate was high but I likes their google ad. I called an hour before dropping off and they said DO NOT BRING ANY CAR here...I was confused I said do you remember we booked this saturday? they said yes...I said do you remember telling me the price and what it would be? and they said yes and so I said Jeff, what changed and he said I dont have to tell you anything and hung up...Terrible..Last minute I found Daves towing and used them. They had great customer service. DO NOT USE!!
Tried and true shop. Honest and respectful of customers.AAA approved and discounts for members.
Never returned the lug key needed to remove tire after getting work done. We were told it was placed in the glove box. I need to repair the brake and the lug key is not where they told us it was placed. We called at 10:30am and was told someone would call us back. I went there at 12:30pm to talk to someone. Front desk person was sitting and watching soccer. Told her that I was here to pick up my lug key. After about 15 min of her calling and walking around, I was told that she was unable to get one because it was after noon.We still do not have a lug key for our car and unable to remove the tires because of this place.
They responded to a flat time call I had through roadside assistance. Came in a timely manner, the guy was kind and swift, did a good job. Very pleased.
Stopped in to inquire about a tire for a car. The lady was rude and not helpful at all. Granted it was a Sunday, but she made me feel as though I should go somewhere else.Ok lady, no problem. I will gladly go somewhere else. And NEVER OPEN YOUR BUSINESS DOOR AGAIN
5 star service... I was in a pinch, in from outta town for a bball tourney. My car wouldnt start and they got her up in running same day on a Saturday for a very resaonable price!
They have dealt with me fairly and did the job right.
Weve been taking our car here for years and have always been happy. The one time they came back with a price quote for a repair that made me hesitates, I looked it up and learned it was just a terrible and pricey thing to go wrong; the car wasnt worth it. And Thompsons didnt charge me for that diagnostic either. All my other experiences have been pleasant surprises at the relatively low cost compared to what Im accustomed to at other places. Theyre sometimes a little behind schedule, but I imagine thats just something that comes with car repairs-- its hard to know how long something might take. I either plan to hang out at Duluth Grill next door for an oil change (a perfect excuse for a cup of coffee and a cinnamon roll!) or to drop it off and leave it for a day if theyre having to look into an issue; much simpler that way. Also, theyre always friendly and helpful and thats a HUGE plus for me because I like to feel comfortable with the people Im doing business with.
Had my car towed by them this morning. Driver was fast in getting there, very professional and explained a lot of what was happening. Highly recommend.
We had issues with our vehicle coming back from Lutsen and had to get towed there. They diagnosed and fixed the problem as their Sunday was winding down and saved our day! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Thank you!!
I dropped my car at 7am called 7 hours later the mechanic was rude. The mechanic said I cannot find the part I will call you back when I find the part to give an estimate. I called an hour and forty five minutes later mechanic said I cannot find the part and cannot give an estimate. The mechanic was very rude. They didn’t fix my car. I would not bring any car to this place.
Always great service.
Had a flat tire along 35 and Jack drove me out and changed it, instead of insisting that it needed to be towed back to the shop. Great guy, very personable and knowledgeable!
This staff is beyond an A+ rating, emergency service on a Sunday afternoon!
Knowledgeable staff, easy access off freeway. Pricing reasonable.
Have had lots of repairs done by this company and was very happy
Go to SVS 5 blocks down and they do EVERYTHING for a good price. This place is only good for oil.
NO ONE TAKE YOUR VEHICLE HERE. A family friend’s car wouldn’t start so she took it in to Thompson’s to be looked at. They told her she needed a new battery and charged her $280 just to replace her car battery!! She then drove the car for 30 min when it quit on her and died again. When having it towed back to Thompson’s, the tow truck driver couldn’t believe they chargered her that much ON TOP of misdiagnosing her vehicle issue. Don’t trust these people they’re nothing but scam artists
If I could give less than one star, I would. Brought my car in for a broken sway bar link and a grinding noise. Fixed the sway bar, not the grinding noise. Drove my car off the lot and began to swerve uncontrollably because my mechanic missed BROKEN WHEEL BEARINGS. Took it to them to fix again, and it wasnt fixed. $600 later, car is worse than before, and they wont refund any money. Only would give 10% off if I took it to them for a THIRD time to fix this problem.Took my car to Johnsons Auto, just a few blocks down, and they fixed it for half the price, and half the time. The mechanics at Thomson Auto are negligent, dont test drive, dont apologize for mistakes, and dont refund you when they screw up. The owner is even more stubborn and pig-headed. Do not go here, go down the road to Johnsons auto.TL;DR: Three trips for a car repair is not acceptable, and not test driving a car is even worse. I was almost hurt due to their negligence, and am out $600 for uneccessary repairs. Go to Johnson Auto instead.
I am from Wisconsin on vacation and had a broken window regulator. Part had recently been replaced already. I found Thompsons T Express from the Napa Autocare website. Made an appointment and they got me in and out fast. The Napa Autocare warranty is nationwide and the repair was covered under the warranty. Thank you very much for the fast service!
I got a flat tire on Hwy 35S. I was towed to a safe location which was Thompsons Express. The lug nuts were torked so high when I got my tires rotated last time that we asked for their help at Thompsons because we couldnt loosen them with the tire iron I had in the car. One man was more than happy to help but after going inside to talk to someone else that works there, he was instructed NOT to help us. We would have to pay, $18.00 for a plug and $28.00 for labor. We can go to Petes Tower in Superior and pay $12.50 for both a plug and labor. I could have had my car towed there but this was closer. In this economy and in this world of social media, I cant believe a business/business owner would be so idiotic as to not help a fellow man/woman in need or match the price of a similiar business. As the wind was whipping and it was raining, we got the spare on as the employees watched from the window. Now I get to vent on the internet and on my FB because thats all I have however do not think that I wont tell my 669 friends on FB, all my clients and friends through the industry that I work, and all my family. Good luck to the person at Thompsons that had a heart and wanted to help us. To the other workers, I wish that when you are in your time of need, that someone will not help you or choose to walk the other way. Karma, Karma, Karma.
I brought my car in on a recommendation with 4 problems. They fixed 3 out of the 4 in just the initial diagnostic, and charged me much less than Im used to paying for just a diagnostic. This included a broken headlight wiring harness according to Jiffy Lube, but Thompsons found that it was just a loose connection and fixed it with no additional charge. I will absolutely be bringing my car here from now on.
I stopped to get air in a tire and car would not re-start...ran in and asked for a jump and a minute later he came out with a starter batt and touched the terminals...(Ihad already lifted the hood) The car started right away and although the service person had spent all of 2 minutes (120 seconds) in starting my car they charged me $40.00...What a rippoff...I will never go there again and am considering taking them to small claims court for price gouging...$40 for 2 minutes effort is an hourly rate of $1200 per hour...I wonder how many others have been the victims of this kind of price gouging...?
The mechanic that helped me was trustworthy and honest.
Bad place
Emergency issue on a Saturday morning they took care of it in just over an hour. I wouldve been a duck out of water without that service, thank you.
Great service e
Great service everytime!
Great place
Twice in a row, wait time was quoted at about 15 minutes to get the car in. Both times it took over 2 hours. Waited an additional 30 minutes for an oil change
Fun place to take the kids
Thank you Jeff
GREAT
