I think its important that my experience as a Volunteer Foster and FORMER Benefactor (but they must be in the enviable position of no longer needing donations?!) to this group be shared. I was given a senior cat to foster, who I was told needed to be socialized because she was hiding. Once at home, I had noticed that the cat had symptoms of dental problems and brought this to the attention of the staff early on. They told me not to come to the vet at this point, because of all the effort it entailed, anesthesia and other excuses. I had the cat with me at home, bonded and loved her as my own in the small apt we shared. When her symptoms got worse, I realized that she had been sick all along and they never did an accurate exam in the first place and they dismissed her symptoms as needing socialization. Turns out in the end she needed a full dental extraction and also had kidney disease. Hours before she was potentially going to be euthanized, as I was waiting with her at their location, experiencing the unbelievable pain of losing a pet. The Manager came out to tell me that the Vet Dr P, was angry at me for bringing attention to the lack of the accurate initial medical assessment of the cat, and they werent interested in giving her any medical care at all. And for that, they would not return my cat if she wasnt going to be put down first. They took her out of my hands and I was told she was euthanized hours later. I cannot believe how cruel and unprofessional these people at the shelter. As I am in tears, letting her go, they got great joy in adding more to my emotional pain. Sick and depraved Management. They should be re-named to the Cruelest Society in the world. It is truly shocking how cruel, heartless, and unprofessional these people are. Oh and also that donation, now withdrawn, as beneficiary would have been significant. Way to go!
I adopted a beautiful pitbull named summer she is everything I was looking for and more best decisions ever this was my first time adopting a pet and I do not regret it only thing I wish is that I was told more about one of her conditions and how to manage it but it was on her medical chart so I got to educate myself about it other then that she is so sweet and I would definitely adopt another pet from this place best decision Ive made 💖
Had a very easy time adopting my 2 cats. Worked with an excellent associate that helped me find a great fit for my family.
Wonderful staff who helped me find the perfect cat! A really rude and entitled customer came in while I was there and the supervisor on duty handled them with the utmost professionalism despite how big a scene this walking ego caused. If she sees this, know you did amazingly and you have a fantastic team.

I think it’s important to share my experience so that others are not blindsided the way I was.First and foremost, they are NOT a no kill shelter (so watch out for that one).Ill begin by sharing my initial experience. The adoption process was fairly quick. I submitted an inquiry through the online process late at night and the next morning I received a call asking me questions. I specifically told them that I could not have a leash reactive or aggressive dog in my neighborhood as I live by an elementary school and I also live in a dog heavy area. I asked these questions about the dog I adopted because I knew that if they were aggressive / had anxiety regarding other dogs it would not be great for their health or the health of my neighborhood. I was informed that the dog I inquired about seemed to fit my needs, so I adopted her!In no way do I regret that adoption because I loved that dog so much! However, I come to find out that she is extremely aggressive and is leash reactive to not only people, but dogs as well. In my neighborhood where I simply cannot avoid them, I made the best decision for her and the hardest decision for me and decided to do a return to shelter.I was told on the phone that I could bring her back. I asked if she could keep her favorite toy to which they said yes. It was not until I was there and alone that I was told they would be EUTHANIZING her (so, to all the comments that said they are no kill, youre sadly mistaken). I had to sit there alone and hold my dog as they killed her. Because I was not even told this until I was sitting in the chair, I had nobody to be there with me and could not prepare myself for what I was about to experience because the last I was told, she could keep her favorite toy.I got in contact with Danielle (I honestly forget her position) and she is conducting a small investigation. In the process of me talking with her I found out that they were deceitful in the initial process and that she was leash reactive in the shelter as well. The entire process that myself and my dog had to endure was honestly disgusting. If they were honest in the initial adoption, they would have placed her in a better home somewhere else where it is quieter and less dog heavy.I say this and share my story because I too saw all of the good reviews. I think it is so important to share these experiences so that others do not go through what I was put through. I do appreciate the reaching out of Danielle and the things she is trying to fix, but it does not negate the fact that this was horrible.Other adopters simply beware.
Our family adopted a beautiful pup from here a few months back. Shelters were clearly inundated with applicants at the time shortly after covid shutdowns were occurring, but I saw a dog, our dog, within a couple hours of her being posted. By the next day, she was off the page. I emailed the staff worried we missed our chance, and thankfully, she was available but was removed since they already received so many applications. They were incredibly responsive while being candid about how busy they were.We had a phone interview and facetimed for a meet and greet. The next day, she was ours. Despite being inundated, the adoption process was extremely smooth, and the staff were in good spirits with excellent communication. They were great advisors and support for helping us build our family. We had a great experience, and when its time for a brother/sister for The Mighty Quinn, the Anti-Cruelty Society is our first choice.
Its where I got my baby girl 7 years ago. She was well taken care of before I had her and they had good recommendations for a vet and Ive been taking her to the same vet ever since.
The whole experience was great. Getting use to do both the paperwork to get my new cat online and the adoption fee was surprising. But as long as you dont put NA on every line, you might even get a compliment. They hate blank spaces. The volunteer who helped out was truly wonderful. Certainly far improved over a previous experience more than a decade ago.
This is just a really great place because they take in animals and find them homes. No kill. And they treat them really well while they are there- with toys and play. They also do a lot to educate the public about animals and being good pet owners. I’ve gotten both my cats and my dog from them- and I’ve volunteered there too. I appreciate them for how they care for animals.
This place is amazing, I called to possibly get some information and help with my two cats. I did receive a call back from a very nice lady who was not only knowledgeable but she was also encouraging. To some people there not only animals theyre apart of our family. Thank you for all that you do. Oh and if you need more volunteers simply tell me how I can go about helping. Unfortunately I dont have funds but I do have a huge heart and a willingness to help.
We adopted our cat there around 3 years ago. He’s the best pet we could have ever asked for. He was brought to the shelter, adopted and then returned to the shelter. I still can’t believe he was sent there 2x but I’m glad they did because then we were able to have this angel in our lives. The shelter was great through the process and he was already all vaccinated and neutered when we got him. Thank you!
The Evanston Animal Shelter rescued 41 cats from a house fire. Five of them were transferred to Anti-Crueltys custody. Within a day, they were euthanized. Traumatized from being dragged from a burning building and put in a cage, they were immediately deemed unhandleable and killed. How many other animals arent even given a chance to recover from their ordeals before receiving a death sentence?
They have a new arrangement during Covid where you can only visit with 2 cats per visit. On my second visit it was clear that the 3rd cat I visited with had chosen me to be her new companion. Wonderful service, wonderful people.
We adopted our first pet 3 days ago. I liked that they tailor your future family member according to your family and needs. Kitty is the most gentle and loving cat we have ever encountered and we have a house with 4 boys who have toned it down just for him. 3 days in and we are happier because of him. The process of adopting is easier than the other associations I encountered and the staff is always eager to help make the process of adoption a true success! If we ever adopt again, it would be from here.
Over the years have gotten 4 great dogs from them. They are so helpful. They vet check the dogs, give them shots, microchip, neuter or spay and so much more. The place to go for dogs!
I go here cause the price is great, but make sure you plan to stay for a long time. I waited for 6 hours door the vet. Then i found out there was only 1 vet dr to see so much pets. But over all i will continue to take my pet here cause its what i can afford.
Barring procedural and communication hiccups, and lack of transparency as to why the animals they have are there, and giving proper guidance once the animal is adopted would be nice, especially when your animal has violent and explosive gas and runny stool. No amount of rice, chicken, oatmeal is solidifying it and the dog needs 6-10 potty RUNS. So explosive, if dog doesnt get out quickly...blam... Would be nice to have known that. Its not barring my love or commitment, but its disingenuous.
I am writing this review because 15-years-ago I adopted my sweet dog Carley from here. She had clearly been abused: she was nervous around people, and had no idea how to be a dog. With a little patience and love she quickly became the most incredible dog and truly my best friend. Unfortunately, I just had to put her to sleep after nearly 15 years of unconditional love. I owe it to the the Anti-Cruelty society for giving me so many good memories with an incredible four-legged friend. Adopt, don’t shop.
Great experience, everyone still wearing masks which was awesome. By appointment only the adoption process went smoothly and we also got an adoption care bag for our new kitten.
We foster for AAWL and love it. Saving animals is their gig and they do it well.
Amazing staff and beautiful animals for adoption
I will never run out of good things to say about this place. I volunteer on the Dog adopts team and work with the foster program. Ive worked in shelters in 4 cities and this is one of the best shelters. The mgmt is amazing and everyone always has a smile on their face, volunteers and staff alike. If youre looking to adopt or foster this is a must stop on your list to check out.
Service was excellent and so was our food! Soup was very good too.
I called to see if I was able to come and check out the fur babies there that need homes so badly but because of covid-19 restrictions we need to make an appointment after we fill out an application. The gentleman I spoke to was absolutely awesome and filled me in and hopefully soon we will have an older dog who needs a good home with lots of loves. Thank you guys for doing what you do everyday!!
Rescued a 7 week old baby squirrel and this place took it in.Dont let the Mad Max exterior fool you..Let the sweet lady at the desk and the shrine to squirrels fool you! Very happy to fond this place!
I am so glad I adopted a dog from here. The setup is great, the people are real helpful and nice, and the application you put in to try and get a.dog is very well asked questions. Its a great way for the society to know who the people are trying to adopt, where they are and if they match the profile for the dog you bnb put in for. I like that cause you know there not just giving an animal to someone who wouldnt be a good fit or someone who may abuse the dog. Thank you for everything and Im so happy with my beautiful puppy and cant wait to watch him grow and succeed
I called to see when and if I could get my cat fixed, and not only did the person on the other side of the line not listen to my inquires, he continued to interrupt me and speak over me and frankly, talked down to me when I was asking simple questions. It ruined my entire experience and I will not be going there, regardless of how cheap it is. They seem highly unprofessional in my opinion
I dont go inside, but cats is beautiful ❤️ from window. Nice shelter for cats.
We went there two weeks ago on a Sunday to find a new kitty friend for my mother whos kitty just passed away and she was very depressed. We decided on Celia who Mom renamed Ginger. Ginger has adapted very quickly to the household. She and Mom are blissfully happy together. We would like to thank Krista in the Cat room and also Jeannie who is at the main desk both for being so patient and helpful.
*UPDATE* We have now adopted from The Anti-cruelty Society for a second time! The adoption process is completely different now because of the pandemic but their communication with me through email and phone and then finally in person was straight forward and they answered my questions thoroughly. Im very grateful for their amazing staff, and shout out to Dr. Belding who has taken such good care of our Bryzzo. We adopted this sweet girl about 10months ago! I have nothing bad to say overall good experience. Reasonable adoption prices, free parking garage, friendly staff. Also took our cat to get neutered and again good experience.
I had the best experience adopting a cat from here. The process was quick, informational and sets you up for success with your new furry friend.
I initially tried to contact them regarding the breeding of dogs in an apartment building and they have Never Responded! The second time I went about contacting them by going through a fundraiser email they sent out. I mentioned that I needed to report a case of severe neglect and I was so surprised when they Responded. They actually went and saved the poor dog and I then offered my assistance in anyway possible, be it financial or foster care and they were very amenable to that and told me that they would keep me updated on everything. They didnt do any of what they promised and proceeded to euthanize the poor dog that could have lived in a loved environment. Very disappointed with them because I found this out by my insistent calling and speaking with a decent person. Still no response from them!!!!!
When I was there today, I witnessed somebody coming in to drop off their mothers cat. He was in the hospital with cancer and couldnt take care of the cat. They immediately took them in and were going to take care of him till she got better. Eyewitness the great work this organization does.
Great Intake Specialist! Gentle, compassionate, & patient.
Very nice staff. Love the dog we got
Staff was very nice and I adopted a fur baby cat~
They euthanized my Dad’s dog, Buddy after he relinquished him after having a stroke. Not even a week later. My dad was very deceived when he relinquished. He was told that he would only been euthanized if he was aggressive which he was NOT. The explanation was that he was having a hard time adjusting to the shelter. Which is understandable since we had him since he was a puppy. We should’ve been called, we could’ve found him a rescue or foster for that matter. The only reason he was given to them was because of the fact we believed he wouldn’t be euthanized. We should’ve been given an opportunity to save his life. We are heartbroken and feel so deceived.
No-kill shelter. I bring unchipped friendly stay cats in for veterinary care and adoption. They check them, neuter and otherwise take care of them. No questions asked. Cant ask for more.
Got my dog, Ginger, here 9.5 yrs ago. Shes still with me and an awesome pal. Looking forward to coming back for a friend for her.
Never got here, nor did I get to speak to anyone
I needed to put my dog to sleep due to cancer and they took me in the same day. I explained she was suffering and worsened from the previous day. They understood her quality of life could not tolerate another day of waiting to be put down. Thank you for helping my girl transition gracefully and quickly.
So nice to have reasonable policies for adoption. Suburbs are more full of obstacles to adoption
Good people doing good work
We cant rate them highly enough! Everyone there was friendly and knowledgeable, they have a store where we were able to buy all our new pets supplies at a good price, they were meticulous about making sure we knew our pets needs and personality, and the experience was a lot of fun. We love our new cat Pooka, and Id love to come back to the Anti-Cruelty Society any time were looking at getting another pet.
These people dont have the patience or knowledge to properly deal with animals who arent used to other humans. Take care when surrendering an animal to them.
Very good and give you coupons to help
Ive had a great experience here. Ive adopted 3 cats over the last 20 years from here and they were all great. A week ago I adopted an older cat (see pics). He was frighted in the shelter and they had him in Charlottes Corner (where the cats arent caged, usually older ones). He was terrified as his former owner died and hed been in the shelter since September.Anyway, I got him home and he got really sick, an upper respiratory infection that a lot of cats from shelters get due to stress. As hes older (they said 10 years) he was having a really difficult time, no eating and no drinking for three days. So I called the shelter and they immediately had me bring him in for fluids and a vitamin shot. They offered to keep him there but they preferred me bring him home so I did. He kept getting worse so I called again. They took him back and stated hell be there for a week. They also did blood tests and they werent sure he was going to make it (actually still not sure). I was able to go back yesterday and visit him in the clinic and he seems completely different and better. They gave him fluids, antibiotics and other treatments. Ill find out Monday or so if hes able to come home. Im hoping although he still is a little sick and its day by day.I gave the ACS four stars instead of five. This is not due to his respiratory infection as that cant be prevented. Its due to the fact that they/me think hes older than what it says on the placard. More like teens maybe which worries me. They did do all the blood work and urinalysis and he only has a slight trace of kidney deterioration (normal for age). I hope he lives and does well at my place. It has been stressful and the clinic and everyone have been so nice. Part of me wants to give him back because hes older than I thought and has a beginning of kidney deficiency. Hes so sweet so Im going to keep him if he recovers. Ill worry about anything else later. Its nice they pay for all the initial and current treatment for 15 days.UPDATEI changed my review to one star. My cat was estimated at 10 yrs old by the ACS. While he was sick at the ACS, the estimate was changed to about 14. Now at my private vet he indicated that he is at least 14 and probably a little older. On top of that he has the beginning stages of kidney disease. And my private vet said too skinny. So now Im sitting at my vet paying $200 to get x-rays to see if he has cancer. On top of that they might want other tests. And hes also being prescribed an appetite stimulant. Plus the chart said he has moderate dental tartar that would need to be treated. That I accepted because I saw it on the board. Apparently it might be more than that with gingivitis. And the x-rays came back and he may have cancer or irritable bowel diseaseFurther imaging is recommend at at least $500. So now Im stuck in a really bad place. Having a nice cat, thats older and sicker than I was led on. Im sure I can bring him back to the ACS but would anyone else want him and want to pay for the costs? I dont know. He also had to get a vitamin B shot. So my first trip to the vet was $300 for a cat Ive had 3 days. Im not even factoring the 7 Uber rides Ive had to take to the ACS and vet, thats another $100.I want to be fair to him and fair to myself. This is very upsetting. And the ironic thing is I got him because my 16 year old cat has kidney disease and probably wont be around for more than a year according to my doctor. So I thought I was getting a 10 yo cat to help lessen the blow. Absolutely upsetting and nerve racking.LAST UPDATEThe ACS called me back and we spoke about him. I have the option of bringing him back at anytime. I just decided to keep him, hes a good cat and I cant bring him back to the shelter. My pocket book will hurt but hopefully hell have a good few years.
We had to put my cat down it was a very sad day. But the staff was ever conferring during this time.
Great place. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Got a new friend there.
The staff was extremely kind and helpful.
Im interested in volunteering but havent heard from them. Maybe old information on the voicemail system. With the pandemic, businesses are struggling to say current with procedures so its understandable.
We had our kitty neutered here. They did such a great job.
They help us a lot to adopt our dog!
I had a fabulous day! I was able to adopt a black lab puppy thanks to the Event sponsored by Subaru. Subaru provided an additional goody/doggie bag with a leash, food bowl, and food scoop. How cool is that? The society gave a light-up leash, too.Thank you to everyone at this fantastic Organization.!!!
Our family just adopted a beautiful & affection 3yr old cat and was pleased and satisfied with the safety precautions implemented when we picked her up. The staff was friendly upon greeting and the process was very efficient. Weve had our kitty for a week and shes just as loving and affection as her bio described her to be! Were thoroughly satisfied and would highly recommend all to consider adopting from here.
This organization helped me when my cat was dying from liver cancer, they offered compassionate euthanasia and let me be with my cat at the end. They had good covid safety practices while still giving me a chance to say goodbye.
Great place! We all adopted our cat from here and he is with us for 2 years now!
Great food, great service, and its great to see it open again.
They are amazing. I adopted my dog on Wednesday and he had a few issues I was concerned about. I called the clinic and they got him in right away and checked him out. Hes doing great.
Very friendly very clean very nice.
The entire staff are the most professional and compassionate people to deal families during the hardest times in their life. Our dog was a 16 year old Roc/Husky mixed, he grew up with my granddaughter who 17, it was devastating to her and my brother. To the entire staff thank you, thank you, thank you.
They Need Cat and Dog food. They will bring a cart outside to unload all the unused Chewy food youre saving for the zombie apocalypse!
They seem to do good work and help a lot of animals
The staff was very concerned and caring. My 16 year old shih tzu needed to be put down due to his health. The facility is spotless and everyone of the staff members made me feel comfortable and at ease with my decision. Thank You.
Easy and affordable adoptions. Lots of animals are adopted very quickly. Made special accommodations for my specific needs and schedule. Very clean and few barriers to adopting as long as you arent an obvious bad fit for your desired pet. Excellent care package to go with your new pet.
Great so far waiting for my two furballs. Next week
They were all so kind to me and my injured pup. Price is reasonable. Now for recovery!
Recently adopted a cat there. I was pretty amazed of the good job that they do with the animals, you can tell that they have everything that they need and the staff seems to really care about them. I paid only $60 dollars to adopt my cat and he already had all vaccines and is neutered. He also has a chip on him. I was also happy to see that they interview the possible adopters to make sure the cats will have a good home. Totally recommend!!! Dont buy, adopt!
I was VERY anxious and worried about taking my 10 month old here for her spay as she is my heart and soul. There was NO WAY I was able to afford my vets prices so this was my only option. Once I arrived my anxiety went away and I couldnt be more happier. The facility was very clean, every employee I encountered was kind. I could not be happier with my experience. I got back the same dog that I dropped off. Thank you for taking care of my baby. They also clipped her nails!
Fast and thorough. They helped me find the perfect cat for me.
Easy, effortless, empathi, caring staff!
Nice place to adopt a pet.
I donated my dogs beds, bowls, toys, etc. Strict covid19 rules, which are appreciated.
I got my puppy from them 8 years ago. He is the best and so where they. 😁
They need to explain the procedure of putting a pet down better in COVID times. We didnt know until we got there that we couldnt be in the room. If we knew that before we might have chosen a different place. The entire procedure felt rushed and the receptionist was too happy for this somber event. Would not recommend here.
Wonderful organization and facility. Appreciative for all they do.
I adopted this sweet girl there to be a companion for my current cat. The staff members there were so nice and helpful and helped us pick out a cat that they thought would get along well with our current cat. We had to get our current cat up to date with his vaccines before we were able to adopt so we werent able to adopt the kitten we wanted on the first day. Came back the next day after taking our current cat to the vet and getting his vaccines done to find out that the kitten we were going to adopt the day before got adopted by someone else, which was a little dissapointing but I can understand why they dont put any animals on hold. We ended up adopting a 1 year old cat who the staff member recommended and she is the sweetest cat ever and were happy to have her! Would recommend if youre looking to adopt. Adopt dont shop please!EDIT: The cat we adopted from the anti-cruelty society is hands down the best cat Ive ever had. Shes super affectionate and is very tolerant of our constant hugs and kisses! She cuddles up next to me and my husband and sleeps next to us every night, and gets along SO well with our first cat (theyre literally best friends now and play with each-other every day). Were so glad we adopted her. Thank you so much to the staff who recommended adopting her, we love her so much and seriously cant understand why her previous owner gave her up, shes such a sweetheart!
I brought my 1 year old pit bull to get spayed, and I was very pleased with the service. I dropped her off in the morning and picked her up during the scheduled pick up time. They were fairly fast with both check in and pick up. The vet thoroughly explained the procedure and how to take care of her after. Will definitely be bringing in my other dog to get him neutered. Oh and they have special prices that are cheaper for your pit bull breeds, which is amazing.
