Adopted a cat about a week ago, and I couldnt have had a better adoption process. Quick email responses before adoption day, as well as helpful staff day of. I adopted a cat with a health issue, and Clark really took their time to thoroughly answer all of my questions (as well as providing a bag of dry food to help make the transition smoother!)--theyre a fantastic organization. Even after bringing my cat home, Sam was available via email to answer a few new questions that came up. Really great organization.
I cannot say enough good things about this place. I knew about this organization through my work because were a partner with them. I went to f&c a month ago to adopt a cat as a first time cat owner. The employee who helped me was super friendly and showed me all the cats they felt would be a good fit. But what I loved about the space was that it was completely open for the cats to freely roam around. I ended up leaving with a cat that chose me by sticking right by my side for the whole visit and sat on my lap. They take excellent care of the cats espcially with medical needs, and they make a lifetime commitment to their animals as well. This is my little boy, I could not have asked for a better cat!
I wanted to update my review. Ive adopted a couple of cats from this shelter, and Im going to be honest they have always been helpful and their priorities are the animals. I trust their judgment and understand how hard it must be to be given an animal back after it was adopted. This is the first place that Ive ever found where they are not interested in making money off the animals but want the best for them. One of the cats I adopted three years ago from them ended up becoming Anxious because I moved to a new home. I reached out to the shelter and they gave me different things I can do, sadly nothing worked and they offered from the start that if it does not work they can always take her back. They did not ask for a penny from me, and asked me to let them know everything about her to help her next adoption. It was amazing how much they truly cared about the best interest of my cat and wanted the best for her, and this is what shelters should be like. Once again I truly appreciate how hard they work and how much they do to make sure they advocate for the animals in their care! Thanks for everything you guys do!!!
Went there in hopes of getting a new kitten! The staff is amazing, very sweet. There is a big variety of kittens/cats to choose from. I got a very small glance of the puppy/dog section which is on the first floor. However I really cant tell you much from what I saw. If you are looking for something soon this place is the place to go. You just have to fill out an application and pretty soon they get back to you. I would say we got a cat within a week to a week and a half after applying. What they dont tell you is that its going to be a $150 fee to get a cat and if you dont have a cat carrier with you that will be an extra $20. $170 total. Everything is still very worth it!! Good luck!!
I adopted a cat from Felines & Canines and it was a wonderful experience. The cats there were all happy (if sleepy) and definitely well cared for. I have visited other shelters where the cats seemed stressed, but not so here. The adoption process was uncomplicated but included a helpful questionnaire that made sure I was the right fit for owning a cat. Same day adoption was an option at this shelter (I happily made use of it) and everyone was so so sweet and helpful. I would 100% recommend this shelter to anyone looking for a animal companion, just as it was recommended to me!
I’ve been looking into adopting a dog for a while now- visited several shelters/ clear the shelter events and even submitted some applications. A family friend pointed us to this shelter that is doing AWESOME work to rehome dogs from rural communities where they might not stand a chance of adoption, to areas where there is high demand (also, cats too of course!). I was perusing their Facebook and saw a picture of a lil pup who looked just like my sisters, and had to put in an application for adoption. I was contacted within HOURS saying we had been approved for a trial adoption! Granted, she was in an incoming transport scheduled to arrive that day so things may have moved a little faster than normal, but between that and the rest of my interactions I’ve been blown away with the level of response and care they take at this rescue. We were able to pick up the pup a few days later, after filling out forms and making a payment (which covers transit, vetting and her spay surgery coming up) - which is refundable if the adoption doesn’t work out. You get a week to see if it’s a good fit or not, and then decide from there. They also provided tons of guidance on what you need to do to prepare for your dog- things to buy, how and what to feed them, what to expect etc. When picking her up, I had some questions about kennel cough and if we needed to have a waiting period between introducing her to my sisters dog just to be safe, and the person I spoke with laid out why she didn’t think we’d have an issue, and said if we did she would be happy to pay for the meds for my pup as well as my sisters!I was contacted again after pickup to schedule booster shots and her spay surgery, and when we went back in for shots everyone was fantastic and answered all my puppy questions. I’m in LOVE with my new best buddy Pippin- but am aware the adoptions don’t work out for everyone. Family friend also trial adopted from here but was unable to keep the dog after a few days, and said that bringing him back was heartbreaking, but she felt good knowing they will take care of finding the right fit and family, and didn’t feel like they were shaming her for making that decision at all.Cons:-You don’t get to meet the dog before, just a little pic and description on the website )see below for mine v how she looks now)- they also don’t have a lot of information on if the dog will be good with kids/other dogs/cats, but it’s understandable given the circumstances they rescue from-A little pricey compared to other rescues, but it’s all towards a great cause so I’m about it-Process of adoption is quick, you won’t get much time to preparePros:-Awesome support from the staff here-Vetting and fixing surgery included in price-Week to confirm if it’s a good fit with the trial adoption set up (but you DO need to reach out to them if it’s not the right fit, they won’t call you to check in or come get the dog)-Refundable if the trail doesn’t work out-They have tons of puppies which can be hard to come by if that’s what you’re looking forThank you Felines and Canines for helping me find my new best buddy!
I highly suggest adopting through Felines & Canines! Felines & Canines is such an incredible animal shelter and while adopting through this pandemic they have made this adoption process so easy! I adopted my beautiful cat Lilah (shelter name Brooke) last Tuesday. I have been looking to adopt and sent an email to Sam to setup an appointment on Monday night. Sam emailed me right away Tuesday morning and we set up an appointment for that afternoon. When I arrived I was greeted by Clark who was so kind, welcoming and supportive through the entire process! Sam and Clark had animals suggested to meet when I got there based on what I was looking for. Clark thoroughly explained each animal and allowed me time to get to know them as well as get to know the others. Lilah (Brooke) was the second cat that I was shown and I knew right away that she was the one! Clark was the most incredible counselor and helped me find my new best friend!Felines and canines were incredibly communicative, their information was easy to find, their flexibility for appointments was outstanding and their matching process was spot on. Thank you Sam, Clark and everyone else at Felines & Canines for helping me find my favorite little lady!
This is an amazing shelter doing amazing work! My mom has had 3 wonderful cats from F&C and I just adopted the best boy cat from here this past week! The staff does an amazing job of matching prospective pet personalities to their potential owners. I am over the moon for my new family member!
I had adopted Princess Spunky the cat formally known as Spunky on 8/15/2021 through Felines & Canines. My goal was to adopt an adult female cat, that would get along with other cats.I know what was needed to a make a successful adoption happen. Many agencies were not responsive to my email inquiries or being closed to the public due to Covid-19. Within days of learning about Felines & Canines and filling out an application, staff emailed me. There were many cats that fit my criteria, so what day & time would I like to come meet my new cat.The staff is very knowledgeable about the cats they shelter and keep detailed notes. The staff guided me towards the cats that would fit purrfectly with my family. Spunky was a great choice. She was very shy, never approach me, and was in the shelter for a very long time. Spunky was great with other cats and that’s what I needed.Princess Spunky is a sweet girl who purrs, meows and has cuddles up next to me. She is enjoying her own bedroom, many sunny windows and cat trees that she shares with her new cat friend Teddy. I very grateful to the dedicate staff at Felines and Canines that made this shelter cat adoption possible.
Abby and Sam stayed with us the whole time that we were hanging out with different kitties. They stayed much longer than they were open, but they were sure to make sure we were welcome. They were efficient and knowledgeable beyond belief and we could not have found a better match for us than our Fig and Hebe (formerly Kansas and New Mexico.)
Felines & Canines is the most caring, wonderful adoption center. I got Norman a couple months ago and I couldnt be happier. I have sent soooo many emails worrying about my new pup (who is completely healthy) and I always got a prompt response and true compassion. They have so many animals in and out their doors but still make you feel like you can count on them for anything. Norman and I are so happy we found each other.
Ive adopted two cats from Felines & Canines during the pandemic and they have both been amazing experiences. They are very responsive and really work to find a cat who fits with your lifestyle. They never make you feel rushed while youre meeting the cats and are extremely friendly throughout the entire process. I could never recommend them enough!
Had an amazing experience adopting from them, they really care about the animals and about finding the right fit for every home.
I wanted to adopt a second cat after my first kitty had been an only child for 5 years which I was a little nervous about. The Felines and Canines people introduced me to a few kitties they thought would be a good fit and made the process extremely easy!!!!!! These guys rock and the boys are already getting along! :)
I adopted my cat here and they have been nothing but superb in all aspects. My cat has had some underlying issues that he came to the shelter with and they have been more than happy to help me get them under control! Which I appreciate more than anything; especially since I love this animal so much! I would recommend this shelter to anyone looking for a well matched cat. They will help you find the perfect new family member!
Wonderful local animal shelter! They rescue cats and dogs from high kill-shelter states like Alabama and make sure their animals find good homes. When we adopted our cat, they took time to make sure we were a good fit and even gave us medicine when our kitty had a cold a week later. 5/5 highly recommend.
We just adopted a cat from Felines & Canines and even during the pandemic the process was very streamlined. After filling out the online application, we scheduled an appointment to visit with the cats, who roam free on the second floor of the building. We appreciated that they do not cage the cats and instead allow you to hang out with the cats freely to get a sense of their personalities. On the day we adopted, the staff was overwhelmed with getting 70 new cats settled and still made time to get us all situated with microchipping, vaccines, and medical records. The cats all seem very happy living there, which is a good testament to the level of care and attention the staff provides to animals.
Thank you to the staff at Felines & Canines for a wonderful adoption process and for bringing this sweet boy into our lives! We appreciated the opportunity to interact with all of the cats to find our match. Everyone was also helpful in answering questions (care, vaccinations, etc.) and it shows just how much they care for all of their animals.
Adopted a kitten while visiting. Clean and nice facility. Very helpful and kind employees.
We have had the most uplifting and positive experience with F&C, even during the COVID-19 crisis. I had been following them for years and know several friends who have adopted through them, so when our time came, we reached out. We were responded to quickly and professionally and still cant believe how blessed we are to have our rescue boy, Clark (formerly OCEAN)! He arrived a little dirty as he came right from his rescued spot in Alabama, as expected, but full of love and was so well taken care of by the staff. These professionals and volunteers dont get enough credit for all they do ––– THANK YOU, F&C!
My husband and I love F&C; We have adopted 2 pups from Abbey and her team and our dogs are literally the sweetest and furriest Alabamians anyone could ever ask for! Plus Abbey and the F&C team were always there for us when we had questions regarding medication or spay/neutering concerns etc. Such an amazing place doing amazing things for the animal community!
I recently adopted two kittens from here and could not suggest it enough. I have allergies and they were beyond helpful finding the right kittens for me because of this. They also provided medicine for my kittens when they weren’t feeling well within the first few weeks of getting them. Everything was easy & helpful, and I could tell they genuinely care about their animals. Go visit and find your new babies!!!
F and C is my favorite rescue. Their philosophy, origins, and staff have always impressed me. I highly recommend if looking for a new furry family member!
We have adopted three animals from here, Milo pictured with this review and two cats. The staff is very welcoming and accommodating. Can get VERY busy on the weekends, so plan extra time. They like to have a personal touch with you so there is no rushing through the process. If youre looking for a new friend visit often, fresh puppers are available weekly so if you dont find a new friend today, perhaps next week.
One of the best shelters Ive ever visited! Sam was quick to respond to emails and I really liked their process of getting to know what kind of cat youre looking for so they can help you pick the best fit! I loved how all the volunteers knew all the cats names and their personalities! All the cats were so happy, healthy, and sweet! I recently adopted a cat and Im so happy I adopted from this shelter!
Very compassionate and understanding shelter. During the pandemic it has been very difficult to adopt a new cat because most shelters are doing virtual adoptions and curbside pickup. This place understands the importance of meeting and interacting with your next fur baby in person. I fell in love and took her home that day and we are very happy with her. The adoption fee included what was medically necessary to take her home along with the spay. I highly recommend this place.
Wow is all I can say. The world of rescue can be challenging at times for all involved ( people and animals), however Felines and Canines made this process seamless. We had been looking to add to our family for a while and basically, looking on line. Many rescues have an extensive process to adopt ( which I fully understand) but felines and Canines took the stress factor out! Our adoption counselor took the time to show us all the pups in the shelter and she was beyond thorough in explaining what the process was, but more importantly what we could expect when we brought our new furry baby home.We went to Felines and Canines at the last minute, ( we were actually driving to a different shelter, but made a stop at FandC)It was the best divine intervention ever. In the last kennel we found our little mama. Isabella now Princess Nala will be a part of our family for a long time.Plan to spend about 1-2 hours here. They allow same day adoptions if approved. Highly recommend this rescue, their staff is beyond knowledgeable and dedicated and their animals are just perfect! ADOPT DONT SHOP :)
I cant say enough good things about this place. I adopted my first dog(other than family dogs) from here 5 months ago. I was definitely a little overexcited and tried to rush the process when I found a dog I liked. The staff slowed me down and talked through the whole situation before considering me to adopt her. She came from a hoarding situation so she hadnt been properly socialized and I definitely downplayed what a big deal that is. After considering everything, they decided to allow me to adopt her. I was a little irritated at the time that they wouldnt just let me adopt her since I was willing because that had been my experience elsewhere but Im definitely glad they took the time to carefully consider whether we would be a good match. It goes to show how much they genuinely care that their animals end up in suitable homes. About a month after adopting her I realized she had some fear aggression issues and was lost trying to figure out a trainer to go to. I called up F&C and they were so supportive and gave me phenomenal recommendations. Also their facility is very impressive and clean!
We recently adopted a cat from F&C. The first thing we appreciated was how clean (and clean-smelling) the shelter was. We were glad to see that they have a whole cat floor, where the felines can interact. It made it a lot less depressing than your typical shelter. The employees really care about the animals and make themselves available as a resource even after you’ve adopted. Definitely the place to go if you’re looking for a new pet!
It was pre-COVID-19 when I decided 2020 was the year Id finally be ready for a dog. I had picked mid-March as the right time as I wouldnt have set travel plans for the rest of the year, the weather would be nice, and I was looking for a little running companion.Cue the shelter in place order and two weeks anxiously waiting to hear if this would even work out. Abby and the team at F&C found a way to make it work, meet the demand, and save so many animal lives in the process while being as contact-less as possible for us humans! And the best part is that I have my new best friend, the sweetest girl of all time, Pepper (fka Charlee). She is sweet and funny and has taught me more about mindfulness in these few weeks than my many years at attempted meditation. And I got to connect with Peppers Alabama foster mom through the F&C community on social media, which has been a wonderful treat!
We got our puppy from them. Communication was quick and their service was top notch. Awesome place to get your pet
We visited today and left with our own new cat addition to the family! Very friendly and professional staff. Im so glad we came here. As a family we visited and each of us really connected with our little Chloe 😻
Adopted a 2 year old kitty Shadow in November 2020. The place was immaculate, plenty of windows, cat furniture, beds, and toys. Staff were super friendly, helpful and devoted. Good veterinary service.
We got our puppy fro these folks. Excellent communications. Couldn’t be happier.
I adopted a female dog yesterday, Katie. This dog will be trained and given to a veteran free of charge through Pets for Vets. The Felines and Canines organization was very easy to work with and the process ran very smoothly. Katie is GREAT and I know she will be wonderful with the Veterans family. The backstory on her was given to me and I felt like I could trust them completely. Complements to their efforts!
Really bad communication and Samantha is really rude. Totally wasted our time going there only to be told they couldn’t accept us even though we followed all the instructions given by email. If you aren’t going to let people see potential pets without you first getting the application then say that. Don’t tell me i can bring it with me to save time while I’m there and then stand me up at the door and lecture me. Samantha is not a great communicator and i would not recommend trying to adopt from them.
My dad finally let us get a dog and we saw a cat that was nice too all 5 of us, and we adopted her.She is very sweet and cute, though mishevous.I give it 5 stars!I think that although it is some distance away, its a great place to get a cat, or, presumbly, a dog.
We recently adopted a kitty from F&C and couldn’t be happier with our experience here. The staff was patient and extremely knowledgeable about every single cat on the floor. I would adopt from them again in a heartbeat.
I cannot say enough positive things about Felines & Canines. I adopted my cat Evie, formerly known as Madame, from them a week ago. The adoption process was seamless - an online application + an email to set up an appointment. After contacting Samantha, she also asked about what I was looking for in a cat so that we could find the right fit in personality. Evie is absolutely perfect - I couldnt be more in love with her. When I went for my appointment, Samantha pointed out a handful of cats she thought would be a good fit based on temperament, age, etc. and I was given time to spend with them and able to ask about any of the other lovely kitties who wanted my attention. Evie is FIV+, and I havent had an FIV+ kitty before. Samantha was so helpful in educating me on what I need to know to have Evie live the same long life as an FIV- cat. Ive been a bit of an overly anxious parent in the week since I got her because of the FIV, and Samantha has been so patient and helpful with all of my questions and helping me troubleshoot some basics. You can tell the staff truly cares about these animals and finding the right home for them. Felines & Canines is the place to go for thoughtful, intentional pet adoption!!!
A wonderful experience: staff were so friendly and helpful, when I came in for the first time they already had some suggestions for cats I should meet based on what Id said about my household and needs. We found the absolute perfect feline addition to our home with their kind help!
So happy to have been able to work with Felines and Canines. They were responsive, knowledgable, and helped us to find the perfect addition to our family. Such a positive experience!
I have adopted from F&C 2 different times now, and both experiences were incredible. They give you as much time as you need to wander around the free roaming cat room, meeting all the different cats. This has led to 2 different times where the perfect cat has walked up to me, hopped in my lap and just started purring. Such a joyful experience! The staff is absolutely amazing. Super informed and caring. They were able to tell me a lot about each individual cat just by looking at them. Ive reached out to them with questions well after the adoption and they were still happy to help.Adoption process is super streamlined and easy! (Even during this pandemic.)I cannot recommend this place enough!
From beginning to end this Shelter was great to work with!!! My husband and I were interested in adopting a new kitty to be a part of our family. We lost our kitty of 21years, Sebastian a few months earlier. We thought maybe our female cat was ready for a new friend as well.Felines and Canines responded right away. There new adoption process during covid was the most efficient of the shelters we spoke to.The shelter itself was clean and brite. Everyone we spoke to was kind and knowledgeable. You can tell they trully love and care for the animals. We ended up adopting a 5 month old male, kitten that day!I highly recommend adopting from Felines and Canines!!!❤🐈🐱
Great people and great cats. I am very happy with my adoption.
Really bad communication. My boyfriend and I went there looking to adopt kittens, and on the first day we were told to “give it thought” one more time because they’re a big decision. Before leaving, we asked if we need anything else to go forward with the adoption, and they said No. Next day, we went and they all of sudden told us we need a written consent that our apartment allows cats, yet; we brought the whole contract of our lease to show proof . They turned us down and we were sent back home again. (We also live very far)
Couldnt get in?! One sign said you need an appointment during covid. Otjer sign on the door said to call a number and leave a message. Been over two weeks and no one has called me back?! 🥶
We went home with 2 amazing cats!! The staff is friendly and kind. Highly recommended for anyone looking to adopt a cat or dog.
I had a great experience everytime Samantha was not involved, shes terrible.
We adopted a cat from Felines and Canines this past weekend. Samantha is super friendly and responds to all emails and questions promptly. We felt very safe with their COVID adoption and sanitization process. The staff is very kind-- we couldnt make a decision during our first 45 minute appointment, and they completely understood and welcomed us back for a second appointment. They all obviously care very much about their work and their animals, and I would recommend this shelter to anyone looking to adopt.
The staff here know the animals very well and are open and upfront about any questions you may have about adopting. Best shelter in Chicago
They were so sweet and helpful. I found my Chloe there. A wonderful, sweet kitty. Chloe is a precious Christmas treasure! Thank you!
We had a fantastic experience with Felines & Canines, the staff was so welcoming and friendly. A week after adopting our cat we emailed back with questions and got a rapid response filled with details specific to our cat. Clearly they take the time to get to know each animal and cater to their needs with great care. Please consider F&C if youre looking to adopt!
My wife and I only saw the cats, but they are so loved and taken care of. Were so grateful they exist. The cat we adopted, originally named Pretty Mama, and who we renamed Francine Bowie Dreeha-Lefholtz, Franny B. for short, is such a delight; she has absolutely brightened up our lives and home. Thanks, Felines & Canines! 💗😻
Took forever to get back to us. They answered their phone one time. We started to email and that stopped out of no where and by the time we reached out the last time, all of the puppies were placed.
Like so many families, we decided to adopt a dog during COVID as we would both be working from home for the foreseeable future. We had been on waiting lists for several months and were so thrilled to have been matched with our new dog Sadie. By nature, I tend to ask TONS of questions, and the owners and staff at Felines & Canines were super responsive and helped to ease our hesitation about adopting a new pup without meeting her first (due to their 7 day foster to adopt program). We completed an extensive questionnaire and cant believe how well we were matched. Sadie is an amazing dog and we are so happy to have her. Thank you Abby, Kelly and Kirby!
An amazing shelter operated by amazing people. Ive gotten 4 different cats from them over the last 15 years. Abby is an absolute delight and these folks could not care more about the animals in their care. For as long as I live in Chicago, I would never considering adopting an animal from anywhere else.
I went in yesterday and adopted the sweetest kitten. The staff here Is knowledgeable, kind, and really cares for each of their animals. Every cat there seemed genuinely happy, healthy and thriving, free roaming their kitty kingdom. They also rescue dogs from a high risk area in Alabama and it’s wonderful that so many animals get a second chance because of these people. We love our new baby and wish the folks at F&C all the best—they are wonderful!
Wonderful rescue center! Helpful and friendly staff, easy application process, and great cats and dogs
We left with our new family member Sweetie (now named Regan) after looking around the dogs, taking her for a walk and having a chat with some very nice members of staff. A relaxed and friendly environment with a caring team that tried to find the right fit for our family. A+ place to go for a dog or a cat.
The shelter staff was very supportive and helpful! They answered all my questions and helped match me with a lovely young cat! Love that they have a large space for the cats to roam and socialize too. Highly recommend them if you are adopting!
Got our dog from this place. They really take care for their animals right here. Her name is Hampton, she’s like 2-3 years old and this dog is really smart and friendly. They told us all about it and gave us the whole list of vaccines and all medical history. Price is decent too, we paid $275 for it. The gave us food, leash, treats... the good thing about is that, u can always return the animal to their place if u cannot take care of it anymore and they’ll accept it. Really nice staff too, true dog lovers. Thank you guys!!
I adopted my cat (RIP) from the formerly known Felines inc. and this place is the best. I am so glad they extended to dogs. Great establishment, amazing mission. Plan on adopting from them again in the near future.
I was just rescued today by a wonderful cat. This is a great shelter where the cats can roam around! If you’re looking for a feline friend I highly recommend this shelter.
The absolute best experience. A wonderful staff that are always willing to help. Highly recommended.
Let me just start this review by saying if youre looking to adopt an animal - this is where you absolutely have to go! I just adopted my pup from here and in all serious, the whole experience was actually FUN from start to finish! The entire staff is super warm and inviting, everyone who walks past you says hi and seem genuinely excited to have you there meeting with animals. Its obvious how much they love their dogs (and cats, too, Im sure!) and clearly their dogs love being there... they are so friendly and happy. I think the most challenging thing about the whole experience was trying to narrow down who to meet... they have some of the cutest, nicest dogs Ive ever met. Im so happy I came to Felines & Canines to adopt. I had heard so many awesome things about them from neighbors who had adopted a dog from there, so I knew they would be the only place Id go when I was ready myself. I feel like I totally hit the jackpot!
Adopting our pup through Felines and Canines has been the absolute best experience! We wanted to adopt during quarantine, and they ran everything so smoothly. They are so incredibly organized: We picked out our pup from the Facebook page that is updated weekly, filled out the application and within a few weeks we received a detailed email about how to move forward with the adoption process. We filled out the necessary paperwork and took care of everything online. Our forms were sent to us electronically and when it came time to pick up our pup we received detailed instructions on what we would need to have ready to receive her, as well as instructions for pickup. We arrived at the location, texted the number, and they delivered her to our car (with masks on) and we were on our way! The process could not have been any easier! Then a few weeks ago, I received an email saying it was time to schedule our pups spay surgery. We picked a date, and then received a detailed email explaining everything we needed to know about drop-off and pickup. When we went to pick her up after her surgery, we received detailed instructions for how to care for our pup post-surgery. Abby, Kelly and Kirby are so incredibly nice and it is so apparent that they love what they do and these pups love them!! Thank you so much Felines and Canines!! We love our Lucy to pieces!
I recently adopted my cat from Felines & Canines and couldnt love this place more if I tried! First and foremost, every person I met there was so kind. You can tell how deeply they love their adopters and care about visitors having a good experience. Their cat floor is so clean, you couldnt smell anything other than fresh air, and its the first shelter Ive been to where I was totally comfortable sitting on the floor! Their adoption process is thoughtful without being over bearing or nerve wracking. You can tell their only goal is to do right by their animals and their adopters. The Director Abby is so responsive to every question I had. I actually cant believe that when you call or email, you can talk directly to the head of the shelter. I didnt think that happened anywhere! I would recommend Felines & Canines to any person considering adopting a dog or cat. They say that once you adopt youre family for life and I can tell they mean it. I cant say enough good things about this place.
My partner and I adopted our awesome dog from F & C. The staff is amazing and unlike other animal adoption centers, doesnt require you jump through unobtainable hoops and doesnt require that a case worker intrude upon your home monthly. Our dog is happy and healthy 8 years later. Thank you Felines and Canines.
Had a horrible experience with this adoption center about a year ago. I adopted a beautiful cat, only to have Felines and Canines take him back from me a few weeks later. The staff, including the owner, are so incredibly rude and demeaning here. If you are looking to adopt, go to PAWS Chicago! They have the best policies and staff :)
We adopted our dog from Felines & Canines and we couldn’t be happier with our experience! The shelter staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. The shelter was also really clean. They encouraged us to take a walk around the block with the dog we were considering. I was shocked that they let us do that but in retrospect it was such a great way to get to know our pup. This shelter is really in the business of matchmaking and they are so good at it. I love that they commit to their dogs for a lifetime and, if a dog is ever returned, they work to find a better home for it. They’re amazing at what they do. When we are ready to adopt a second dog, we’re definitely going back to Felines & Canines!
We took a bit of a break before adding a dog back into our family after our most recent loss. A friend of ours recommended supporting a local group so we began using PetFinder to aid in our search. Long story short, the dog we were probably interested in was adopted but we came by in person anyway. From the moment we walked in, it was a very pleasant experience. The person who greeted us and ended up helping us through our process was absolutely amazing, very caring, knowledgeable and thorough in each step of the way. As she brought us around to see the dogs, we ended up downstairs where we met our new daughter Kyra (pka Liberty). We didnt even know shes what we were looking for until we met face to face! We got to walk with her, be alone with her, play/pet, etc... It was great! Plus, the animals are truly loved and cared for by this wonderful staff. Each person was upbeat, positive, professional and happy to be there! Thank you too everyone we met today that was apart of our adoption. Kyra is in a great home and wers so glad to have her!!!Thank you VERY MUCH!!!!
I got my first dog there and I love her!
My husband and I adopted a 5-month old puppy from Felines and Canines a few weeks ago. The adoption process was seamless (we met the puppy and took him home that day!), and from the moment we walked in the door, we were so impressed with how the F&C team. That first impression paled in comparison to the incredible level of support that we continued to receive from Abby and her team (we worked with Sam, Izzy, and Kirby, among others!) over the subsequent days and weeks, as our pup got sick shortly after we brought him home. They were tremendously responsive, compassionate, patient, and solution-oriented; they truly went above and beyond in many regards to help our puppy become healthy (which he now is!). Their generosity with us goes to show not only how deeply they care about their mission to save the lives of dogs and cats, but also how they welcome new members into their community with open arms. We will always be grateful for the experience we had at F&C and look forward to continuing the relationship with Abby and her team in the years to come. THANK YOU!!!
The staff (namely Kirby) made the process of adoption seem so much more approachable. They answered all of our questions- patiently. We were given a thorough tour of the facility and we got to meet all of the dogs.I love that there are a variety of breeds/animals so that a family can find the pet that best fits in and vise versa. And if it isnt love at first sight with any of the dogs today- there are new arrivals every other week or so.I wish life was such that no animal had to be housed at a shelter. But as this is a reality, Felines and Canines does a good job of caring for cats and dogs until they find their forever home.
The woman Sam has terrible service she cancelled appointments gave another one through email had me drive a very long way just to turn me around, dont waste your time.
I found a very sweet young cat roaming around the allies by the feral cat colony I help care for. He seemed to be quite obviously lost, and he was rather thin. I was lucky he was so friendly, because after feeding him, I was able to bring him home where I cared for him while I frantically called every no-kill shelter I could verify to be no kill. After attempting everywhere from PAWS, to Harmony House, to Treehouse, to Animal Care and Control, I eventually (48 hours later) stumbled upon Felines & Canines. I am SO GLAD I did. Abby indicated that due to COVID it has been so incredibly busy, and she, at first, seemed reluctant to take little Potato, as we named him, in. But, it wasnt hard to convince her! We were able to bring him by for intake the follow afternoon, and I am so thankful he is at a shelter that will protect him and help him find a forever home with some loving person/people! A bonus... Abby allowed my partner and I a moment with Potato to say goodbye and wish him luck on his journey in finding a family. We miss him so much now, but gosh... we are so incredibly thankful to Abby and the team at Felines and Canines for taking him in and helping this sweet little guy!
We had been searching for a dog for the past couple months working with several different local shelters. We heard about Felines & Canines and really liked that they work with both dogs and cats. We have a 5 year old cat and wanted to make sure that whatever dog we adopted would be safe at home with our cat. Felines & Canines was incredibly supportive of this and cat-tested the dog we were interested in right away. We worked with Abby and she was amazing at answering all of our questions. It was exactly the experience you hope for when adding to your family. Thank you, Abby and Felines & Canines!
This is the most wonderful place I have had the opportunity to interact with. They truly want what is best for the animal. They also focus on the adopters needs and truly have their best interest in mind (which is so hard to find!) The entire community at this facility is incredibly welcoming and supportive. Highly recommended. And a thank you again from my new family member, and myself,to Felines and Canines. Abby, Kelly, and Carol ♥️
We had no luck at any other rescue during the pandemic. They are so good and communicative. We are furever grateful to have gotten our doggie from here!
Outstanding experience- the total package! First I saw all the cuties online, (about 10x as many at the facility that dont even make it to the website) then I followed all the online instructions with the new COVID protocols, I had awesome email communication, set my appointment and voila! I show up to find my new baby- I was a little worried that it was going to be tragic and I was going to try and save them all...picture middle aged woman running out with 14 cats. Nope. Such a bright, loving, clean and safe cat room. And all of these VOLUNTEERS, are zipping around tending to these cats like their own. There is ZERO smell. Whaaaaa? (And I went on a day after they rescued 65 cats) They are cleaning, feeding, brushing, playing with, talking to and somehow they know each personality and each activity level (or ZOOMIE level HA!). It is so impressive. Shout out to Sam, Kirby and Mel. And all the others - you are GEMS! They walk you through all the vaccs, meds, surgery and pet docs are sent to you online- its a breeze honestly. And the cherry on top? You leave the same day with your new family member- it does not get any better! LOVE IT.
We adopted our dog Kyra (Liberty at F&C) last Saturday and it was a wonderful experience. I believe the person who helped us with the adoption was Carol and she was knowledgeable and friendly. They give you time with your potential dog and even let you take them on a walk. I think that is a great idea so you have a little privacy with the family to discuss youre thoughts and see how the dog will walk. The shelter was clean and smelled nice. Everyone was so friendly, the energy was nice and we couldnt be happier! Thanks for our new family member!
A few weeks ago I came in here in search of a friend to take home since I had just recently moved to the city. Everybody was so kind and helpful. I knew I wanted P. Joe almost instantly, he’s been my best friend since and the adoption experience was very clearly explained and simple. Everybody there obviously really loved and cared for him as well as all the other animals, they said their goodbyes and let him pick out and take home a toy. I love my dog so much and sincerely appreciate the service they provided me and all the information i could ever need as well (he’s my first dog so I had a good bit of questions) Thank you guys so much
This is a great place to get a pet in Chicago! The staff was so friendly and helpful and clearly knew the pets. The place was clean and friendly for the animals. Molly helped me when I came for a cat and he helped me pick out a wonderful cat based on my needs, walked me through the adoption process, and I adopted the little guy right there same day. I would definitely come here again for my next pet.
I visited Felines & Canines this past Tuesday because Im looking to adopt a cat. Though Im a few weeks from actually adopting one I tell you this place is spot on. Its an open, free roam, clean environment for cats to just intermingle and chill out. I certainly didnt see any hostility amongst the cats period. Very cool place to check out if youre interested in getting a cat. I didnt see the dog area so I cant speak of it.
Friendly staff who’s dedication to the animals is self-evident in the clean and well maintained facility and heath of the animals- many of whom were feral before being housed there. Adoption process is straightforward and easy to navigate, staff are very accommodating.
I dont recommend working with these people. I had an appointment to meet a cat that had been in the shelter for 2 months. I made sure that she was adoptable and was told a few days prior that she was. One day before my appointment, she was given up for adoption to another family. Which doesnt make too much sense because even if they cant reserve cats, it wouldnt make sense to say that the family fell in love with the pet so they gave it a home without fully considering other owners. I then called and someone told me to come in twice on Wednesday which doesnt make much sense as we are in the middle of a pandemic and they encouraged patrons to have multiple in-person visits. The apology and response was not professional and they have questionable business practices. AVOID.
They dont want to actually help everyone.
I couldn’t be happier with my decision of going to Felines and Cannies to adopt out dog. It was such an enjoyable experience. They were extremely helpful. My tip is go there as soon as it opens because they get very very busy. We are so happy and Bentley has been a wonderful addition to our family!
