I spent a good amount of time freshman year yammin on the basketball hoops at Fetzer, as it was conveniently located near my last class of the day. This on-campus gym is a great recreation facility for UNC students.
The renovation of rec center made it awesome for power lifting. The other facilities are good too.
Class of 76 dropout (VCU BS-IS 84 later), for context. My freshman 2nd semester phys ed class (judo) was held in the tin can. Glad they replaced it.
If you dont get lost in the endless connections between Fetzer and the student rec center, you will enjoy your workout here. Many options for whatever activities you enjoy. Not a ton of cardio (rams head has way more machines) but tons of other equipment and you can get your cardio with other activities like squash, etc.
Its surprising that a major university would let this facility become so outdated. The mens locker room is awful. Lockers are rusted and many wont latch. Many shower heads dont work. Racquetball courts are in rough shape - broken door handles, crumbling and uneven walls. I was told that there is no air conditioning.
Widest variety of weight lifting equipment compared to other student gyms in UNC’s campus
The signs on the doors all say that the gym opens at 9 am. However, I waited for almost an hour and there isnt anyone at the front desk. The few people I saw provided little to no assistance! How can a school gymnasium operate so poorly?!!
Best gym on campus. Lots of free weights and machines on the lower floor, lots of cardio upstairs. Offers fitness classes as well as equipment for various sports.
Nice basketball courts. Decent private gym for club athletes and other open spaces for clubs
Pretty ratty gym but it has plenty of equipment and several squat racks. Make sure to time it right, though, if you hit it during peak times youll never get on the equipment.
Good gym with lots of equipments and usually not very crowded!
Good facilities, though often occupied by classes or sports teams.
Pretty old and dingy. The racquetball equipment is falling apart. Always crowded and smelly. Needs updating.
Good place to work out!
Very adequate for its role
Outdated, building is old and looks to fit only small people
Good space with many resources
First class.
