We have been going to this school for 8 or so years. My three kids have had such a great experience here over the years! There is such a family / community environment - you can truly tell that they are committed to each student rather than just churning out black belts. When my middle child wanted to take a break from karate, there were no problems with contracts, etc and they were happy to have him back when he was ready!
The instructors and staff here are great. Our whole family is involved and they work with us at our own pace to get the most out of our experience. We also sent our boys to summer camp here and it was top notch. They kept them busy with activities all day including three hours of karate each day. They were able to earn their initial belts during camp so they actually outrank the adults in the house.
My 4 year old son absolutely adores his karate class, and I have greatly enjoyed this experience. The level of patience in working with the kids, especially the young ones who are still learning how to interact in the setting, is stellar. I also love the fact that there is a balance between fun and games, along with taking karate seriously as an art and sport. UMAA has a program that inspires discipline, respect, character development, an understanding of martial arts, and strengthens all areas of development in children, and I have seen positive effects in my son since beginning his journey in martial arts.
I went in yesterday and came back today for my first judo lesson. I have some very limited previous experience, and I was learning off the bat. Its a great environment to learn judo in as far as I can tell. I cant speak on behalf of the karate program, but in response to the previous post about their instructors not being on par, that wasnt my experience.
I am not sure what they are talking about. I remember when I cancelled my membership early. I read my contract before I did it; so I knew what to expect. Its no big deal....Karate International will let anyone out of their membership early, and yea, I expect to have to pay to cancel early. Its a normal business practice with legitimate full time businesses. As far as the teachers not being up to par and part time I think he is confusing this school with something else. The OWNER is teaching classes along side numerous black belt instructors. The school is open Monday - Thursday 9:30am - 8:30pm and Saturday 9:00am - 2:00pm....nothing part time about that. The teachers are ALL professional and courteous. This person just sounds mad because they probably tried to NOT be held responsible for their end of the agreement...or maybe its just something else entirely. What a load of nonsense
Very poor experience here. Teachers were mostly not unto par and were part-timers except Mr. Winterwood who was a good teacher (but he only teaches one day).On top of that, the contract is a mess to get out of. When you join insist on a month to month arrangement - there is no getting out of contract without paying a hefty penalty (an arm and a leg).Scouting other Karate programs that have a better schedule and teaching ethics.
Ive been going there for 5 years now, and I love it!! Tony Letorneau is a fantastic teacher of pretty much anything! He loves what he does and it shows. He cares for his students and their parents, and he plans fun things for members of all ages!! There is a family atmosphere among the students, and its a family-friendly dojo and a woman-friendly dojo!! I would recommend this dojo to anyone, male or female, child or adult, who wants to be exposed to lots of martial arts and choose what makes them happy.
Karate International with Tony Letourneau has been one of the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences l have come across in my life thus far. I have learned and grown not only in the class but in aspects of my life. Karate is something that I have always wanted to do, and I dont think their is any better place I could have started than here. The pace in which we learn, the dedication and commitment from teacher to student and vice versa is outstanding, and the exercise is great too!!! I take the class with my mother and she enjoys it as well. I can say as a witness that they work with you to the fullest extent, modifying for your every need. I would highly recommend Karate International for anyone who is looking for a healthy change, whether it be exercise, commitment, discipline, or just to do a fun extra curricular activity. With an experience that is available for all ages, Karate International is definitely the place to be.
I have never been in such a nice place like Karate international of Cary. Tony is a GREAT person and a fantastic instructor, also everyone there are very friendly. Thanks for Karate international for all what you gave for me :)
We looked around for karate training for my six-year-old son and joined here because we were so impressed with Mr. Letourneau, the owner. A year and a half later, we are still very satisfied. Mr. Letourneau has excellent communication with the parents, a wonderful staff, and a great ability to bring out the best in the kids. Over a few months, with teachers like Mr. Letourneau and Mr. Winterrowd, the increase in focus and respect from the kids is observable. I also really appreciated the fact that this is not a high-pressure sales situation. We went to other establishments that wanted us to sign a contract after one lesson.
Mr. Letourneau has, honestly, given me and my son our drive for karate back. The school is amazing and we all are close knit, almost like a family. The amount of instruction given surpasses any other school that I have been in and Mr. Winterrowd has quickly became my sons idol. I hold a 1st degree black belt in Sanshinkai Karate and a green belt in Sanshinkai Jujitsu. My son holds a green belt in Sanshinkai Karate and his first belt ranking in sword. Our school offers Judo, jujitsu and sword classes as well for students to cross train if they like. All classes ( whether karate, jujitsu or judo ) are broken down so there is a great student to instructor ratio and our adult program is so much fun to be in. Hands down great school!
I am a new student here, and I am diggin it!! Mr Letourneau and his team of black belts put on quite a class! Several, actually. Large classes are broken down into mini classes that meet the needs of those on the floor. A black belt might take one or more students to work on the basic kicks, blocks and punches, and I have seen (and sometimes experienced as well) more advanced students engage in kata, swordplay, nun-chucks, bo staff work, sparring, work with the hanging bags, and BOB, the (nonbobbing) mannikin... and probably more! Sometimes two classes share the floor, with one class working on aikido while the other learns karate. This is just what I have observed in my first 3 weeks!! There are quite a few young folk out there with advanced belts, and there are some adorable tots who get to play jumping and running and kicking games to learn the martial arts. The atmosphere is relaxed yet energetically charged. The teaching is clear and concise, with attention paid to each students needs and challenges. I know what I need to learn to progress, and I am taught not only that but so much more! This is a great place to earn a black belt!!
My daughter loved it!
