Run for your life! Everything about UP sounded awesome, except smoking is permitted. E This property management is not following the ordinance smoke-free Health District that passed in 2020.

I implore you to not live here. This place is filthy and infested with pests. It is a widely expensive filthhole, preying on UAB undergrad students and UAB medical students. I moved in and was pleasantly greeted with apartment surfaces being sticky and light switches/handles covered in what could only be described as build-up from skin? On the first day, I found these two insect sticky pads in plain view (two photographs). Lets just say... In my time here, my cat has become a cockroach hunter par excellence. My A/C units both possessed interiors covered in mold, blowing mold pieces out alongside what could only be described as broken down insulation of some sorta (other two photographs)? This was promptly fixed upon asking, but why wouldnt they be cleaned before a new person moves in?Please, this is my first Google review. I feel that strongly about University Place. I sincerely encourage you to stay as far away as you can. No ease/accessibility is worth this.

I just recently relocated from Atlanta, GA to Birmingham, AL for a new job at UAB Medical. Mrs. Porsha Johnson was very helpful with my apartment needs. I needed a larger apartment from a one bedroom to a two bedroom and she was tremendous with my apartment transition. Also, I experienced issues with the cable and internet installation in my apartment, which I needed for my new employee online orientation. I got discouraged and wanted to move back to Atlanta, GA., whereas, Porsha assisted the cable technician with turning on the outside cable box which finally provided cable and internet service in my apartment - a big relief.Mrs. Porsha Johnson provided excellent customer services with my untimely issues and showed concern for the University Place Apartment residents. Im so glad that Mrs. Porsha Johnson is on their team and Im so happy to be a resident in this community. Also, this community provide nice views of downtown Birmingham and the skyline. Very peaceful and relaxing.

Great place to live. I lived here for one year while doing temporary work at UAB. You can walk to anywhere on UAB (school) or in the medical center. Also very nearby is 5 points with good food and drinks. I had to drive very little while living here. Quick access to both I-65 and 280. It is secure with gates/access cards, overnight guard. The office and maintenance staff were very pleasant and helpful. They make an effort to have social events for residents; very nice. The property is old and you can tell but it is clean and well maintained from my experience. They offer efficiency floor plans which is what I was looking for. Overall I am very happy I chose UP Apartments and would live here again.

Very convenient to UAB campus. Lots of new amenities and reasonably secure. This is a very old build for the most part but they have renovated most of the rooms. Bathrooms and plumbing are old and cramped. Plumber has to be called often.

Somehow, I managed to live here for a year, and I am still so absolutely disgusted with it. The cons far outweigh the pros, and I want to share my experiences with you so you can avoid the disappointment. The pros:-walking distance to UAB, 5 Points, downtown-gated parking-new, better management (I wish them the best)-utilities included ...more on that laterThe cons:-When I rented, it was $910 for a small studio. Ive seen that apparently the price was reduced...GOOD.-When I first moved in, I was given the keys to a unit after I signed my lease. I walked into the most revolting room, and I called my parents in a panic. There was trash strewn from wall to wall, dirty dishes in the sink, bloody towels, cigarette butts, and broken furniture. That should have been my cue to immediately get it of here! I went back, and the leading agent apologized before giving another set of keys to a more acceptable unit.-There are beyond disgusting conditions in the unit and pool area. The pictures Ive included illustrate that clearly. The building is old, smelly, and run-down. At night, it is so dark with loud neighbors. I was always shocked when I found another short-cut taken in renovations. They didnt bother to take the stove out when putting that flimsy flooring in, so I discovered nasty carpet underneath when I dropped something behind it. The pool patio featured gross outdoor carpeting that was stained and stretched by the puddles of water that would collect outside your door. Ooh, a coffee lounge? Yeah, $2 for a 6 oz cup made from stale Starbucks beans.-The management and maintenance were so unprofessional. Every time I needed something, there was rarely someone at the desk to help. They put up the sign saying they were showing on-site property so I sat for 45 minutes on occasion only to see them pull up in their car. The number included on the sign would never reach anyone. The one time I needed maintenance, the man (who I had only seen moping around previously) was unfriendly and almost rude. He spoke not once. Often, you would find announcements taped to your door that were sometimes curt, sometimes advertising lame community events. They have package acceptance, but they gave my package to another resident in their lack of organization. I later found that package in the mail room trash...goes to show the quality of people who live there. They have online payments, but its ridiculously expensive to do it! I believe $20-something to use a card.-Your utilities are included, but cheap is cheap! Once, I filled a mug to make tea only to find that the water was brown with flakes of insulation floating in it! Horrified, I took it to the front desk where I waited 20 minutes for someone to show up. I was told that they had reset the water, and it should be back to normal. A half-hearted apology was offered, and I was nervous to drink the water after that. The wifi is laughable. I think I would have preferred to revert back to dial-up with the insanely slow and unreliable service in the lounge. They once had the gall to put a notice on our doors that said we were to limit our water usage because their bill was too high. They claimed they would monitor usage and charge an additional fee to any unit using too much. That made me want to run the water 24/7, but instead I laughed.-The amenities are a joke. The laundry room was expensive and FILTHY. I opened a washer to put my clothes in, and I was greeted by a puddle of murky, stinky water full of hair. (Take a look at the picture, if you dare.) The fitness center was open for 3 of the 12 months that I was there. The gated parking is laughable. First of all, they charge $60 for one car. The lot is small, especially since the closed parts of it to do messy roof construction. The gate was broken when I arrived home one night, and I was forced to park on the dark street instead of the promised gated parking. It was left open for anyone to stroll in when it was broken the other 4 times that happened while I was there. In short: if you love yourself, live somewhere else.

I haven’t moved yet but I wanted to give recognition to Porsha!! She did an excellent job at making me feel welcomed during my application process! She was friendly and really engaging. My application process was smooth and quick! I was able to get all of it done with her help! She’s so great! I can’t wait to move here in May!Also, the apartments are nice! Most have hardwood floors and they are really close to campus! This is a great place to live if you’re moving off campus!

This apartment complex is absolutely amazing. Tiffany and BJ are the nicest and most accommodating individuals you could ever meet. They exemplify the definition of customer service. Maintenance is relatively fast at fixing orders and they always have a positive attitude. My wife and I plan on making this our home for a while and can rest easy knowing we are not in good hands but awesome hands.

Tiff and BJ are wonderful person. There are somewhat reasonable rent prices. But they REALLY NEED to upgrade the furniture and appliances they provide in the apartments. They literally feel like they belong from 1950s even though they say the apartment is a renovated one.

The staff was very welcoming especially Ms. Drake was excellent in accommodating me and my family in drastic up root from the Virgin Islands. She was prompt and respectful and understanding and assisted us all the way up until the day we actually moved in. I would recommend these apartments to anyone just based of the staff alone.

University Place has a convenient location next to UAB undergraduate campus, UAB medical center, and Five Points South. This area of town has you covered in terms of places for brunch, dinner, and nightlife. University Place is not as glamorous as other newer apartment complexes; however, it is much more affordable. Most of the competitors are more expensive, utilities are NOT included, and furniture is NOT included, unlike University Place which provides all of these things. The staff is very friendly and always willing to assist however they can. Indeed the apartment complex has a slower-pace, family-feel to it. You will get to know other people living there, who literally come from all over the world, and all of the staff, including the friendly security guards. No joke I met one of my best friends here. It also has a pool, a common lounge, and a workout room!

Have lived at University Place for about a year and a half now. Had a few manager swaps but this one has truly changed my opinion of this property. Hes responsive, he listens, and does what he says hes going to do. This is an older property so I understand that maintenance is needed in my home but those work orders are addressed same day or next day. New fitness equipment arrived a few weeks ago and I couldnt be happier!Rent includes all of my utilities (Electricity, Water, and Trash!) which means I write one check every month and dont have to worry about anything except my Cable. Gated parking which beats having to try to find parking on the street and pay a meter. Im walking distance to 5points to some of my favorite restaurants and bars. Thanks University Place!

This apartment complex has a serious mold problem. All of the windows leak when it rains. I reported mold in my apartment to management which was never resolved. Upon moving out, they withheld my deposit as well.If you rent from here, you are going to pay over $1000/month to live with a moldy apartment.

DO NOT rent here! I applied and got accepted to rent an apartment with them. However, they made a mistake on my application. Instead of apologizing, Porsha blames me for the error and said I was confused. Come to find out that they entered my move in date incorrectly on their computer system. I even paid my deposit early to show them I was serious about moving in. UP just made the process of moving in more difficult than it should be. I figured that they were not able to have the apartment ready at the time I stated in the application. So UNPROFESSIONAL!To make matters worse, they canceled my account on the rental portal twice so, I can’t see my payment history. They never returned my deposit. I have contacted them and they said that my all fees were relinquished, which I understand since it was in the rental agreement. However, the deposit should be returned since it is not a rental fee!I had a horrible experience with UP and generally speaking they were unprofessional and uncaring. When all is said and done, think twice about renting here. They are SHADY and I believe I am not the only one who experienced this issue. Do your research and watch out for “red flags.”

This is my first time Ive had evaluated any complex.Ive lived here since last Jan. If I stayed at Birmingham long time I would not stay here any longer .To be optimized I will start with the Advantages:1. Safe2. close to UAB it takes about 5 or 10 minutes.3. good rent price included the utilities. The disadvantages :1. very very very old.2. dirty dirty.3. the laundry room is awful, there are only 12 dryer machines and 12 washers, for more than 300 units !I will let you imagine the dirty, smell, and who much hair you will find in your clothes.4. The apt parts are old like AC and Toilet, I transferred from apt to other because the roof was leaking and I have the same problem with the new one, they keeping promise to fix it but they not.5. there is no fresh air spot in bedroom or restroom.6. There is bad smell in the Restroom and there is no air spot or fan.7. the Carpet around the swimming pool have bad and strong smell, especially after Sunny or runny day.

Pros: Close to UAB, Gated Parking, Big pool, friendly staff and management, and no utilities to pay for, everything is included in rent.Cons: Expensive for what you get. I payed $1000 a month for a studio and a parking pass on a 12 month lease(the price is even more expensive when leasing for a shorter term or month to month) Place is very old, expect windows to leak, MOLD to grow, and things to break. In my year living here, I had to get the tub in the bathroom replaced, the refrigerator replaced, the window resealed and have multiple other maintenance trips and while I didn’t have to pay for any of it, it is very time consuming having deal with all these repairs on top of having a full time class schedule and a part time job. Honestly, too much to deal with when asking for $1000 or more a month.Furthermore, brown water came from the bathroom faucets frequently and the temperature rapidly fluctuates when in the shower which is incredibly annoying to deal with and made showering here unenjoyable for me. When I told them about the issue, they would come and run their hands under the water for 30 secs see no issue, and told me to take a shower at a less “popular time”. I’m sorry, but if I’m paying $1000 a month I better be able to take a shower whenever the hell I want.I would only live here if being within walking distance to UAB is a must for you, that is literally the only benefit of living here over anywhere else. If not, I would definitely steer clear of this place as the constantly needed repairs, brown water, fluctuations in water temperature, and myriads of other issues are not worth the $1000 or more they charge. The complex is just getting too old and is going to need a major remodel in couple years unless they want to go bankrupt paying for repairs.

Would NOT recommend. While paying an absurd amount of $1000 for a small studio apartment,, heres what I encountered::- You need to pay $60 a month (per car) to park here. At a place you live.- Extra fees for paying your rent online. If you use MasterCard or Discover, this fee is $15.30. If you use Visa, its $48.96. Almost 50 dollars to pay your rent online.- EXTREMELY SLOW, spotty,, sub-56kbps internet. This means you will struggle loading YouTube videos at the lowest quality, and most webpages take around 10 seconds to load fully, if they load at all.- Your mail key, and everyone elses, can open multiple mailboxes (how did this happen?)- Stained, shoddy carpeting in main outside common area- Noisy neighbors with nothing being done about them (working tomorrow or studying tonight? Good luck when you have people throwing a random barbeque at midnight!)- Debris from roof construction raining all across the outside carpet common area.- Flooding in common area (some puddles form right in front of apartment doors!)- Leaky faucets that sometimes spread water everywhere if youre not careful- Water temperatures in both shower and sink sometimes fluctuate between very hot and very cold- Two lights in my apartment did not function when I moved in. This was a furnished studio I paid for.If youre considering living here, stop now. Find a better place for half the cost.
