I have to echo these other reviews regarding the customer service. In general, the client facing staff are unfriendly, not helpful, inefficient and incredibly slow. I race off the plane in hopes I am one of the first from my flight because it’s so slow to process people. There could be three or four employees in the checkin office and only one is helping customers. Other small airports I frequent get 5 stars, please do better.**I believe her name is Gwendolyn. She is friendly and efficient. It’s a blessing when she is working.

Sheryle is the RUDEST agent I’ve ever dealt with at National. She thinks she is answering questions but never says anything. Then gets irritated you ask again. Wants you to initial things however when you ask what you are signing, gives you wrong info. Horrible horrible. Do better National.

I would like to say that this is my 2nd time renting with National for personal usage and by far the service has been exceptional. From flying in and picking up my rental to bringing it back was a smooth transition. During my return there was a young lady that was extremely nice I asked of her name because others need to know of her when they encounter her she told me her name was Aaliyah “like the singer” Portis extremely nice and helpful, National should be happy to have her; this point moving forward I will rent with National because they definitely know how to hire the right personnel cudos National keep up the great work!

The staff was very friendly but unable and delayed in assisting me correcting an issue with the vehicle. My vehicle was retrieved by Weil Wrecker Services on dispatch from National Roadside. At this point it has been 4hrs since my call for assistance. I have now been at the Birmingham Shuttleworth Airport location for 3hrs without a resolution.

Convenient location but lacks vehicle choices (if there is a choice available). I’ve been elite status for several years and never have I had to deal with such a shortage of vehicles. I really hope they can step it up a notch. Having top elite status with national means nothing at the BHM location.

This location by far has the most unfriendly, non customer service oriented employees of any National location I’ve ever visited. I’m not sure at this point if this location just has bad employees, bad managers, or people who just don’t care. They’ve had several managers since I’ve been renting here and it’s the same every time. When is National going to get their act together in Birmingham?

The customer service representative was very friendly and helpful.Dislike: The inside of the car was not properly cleaned. The seats and floor were extremely dirty. During this uncertain times I feel it is important for the safety of your customers to throughly clean the cars.

Easy rentals through app and pick up through app. Service Counter and return check in employees have always been helpful and make my trips easy.I do recommend always taking a video of your car before and after your trip. I did have one National rental store try and claim damage after drop off that I know I did not do and they could not provide photos of the damage The claim also came 3 days after I dropped it off.

The worst car rental service I have ever had from NATIONAL CAR RENTAL they treated me like I was not worth talking to. I am a EMERALD CLUB MEMBER that has had 115 car rentals in 8 months this year. This will be the last time I ever rent one from this branch. I will drive a u-haul 1st.

The service I recieved was exactly what is expected when renting a car. I made a reservation ahead of time and when I showed up the vehicle was clean and ready. Getting into the car and off to my destination was quick and easy.Dropping off the car couldnt have been easier. Overall great experience

The process at BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT IS very slow you can not Go to the car and leave you have To go to the counter and get the keys. There is only one clerk, and she is very busy when a flight comes in. The process take to long and when your plane lands at 10 pm I pick national. for the quick pick up and there are not many cars at the executive level .

I requested a Dodge Caravan in advanced notice, but still did not get what I requested. Im very disappointed in National Car Rental. I was even informed to call a day before to sure or to remind National to have the van ready for pick up. I called the day before and spoke with Richard. He inform me they had plenty of vans available for me. I believed Richard, but let down when I arrived for pick up. I was taking my daughter to college. I needed a more roomy vehicle. Although the Infinity QX80 is a large SUV, but wasnt large enough. Oh should I mention the tuna fish smell and grease that was at the back of the hatch(on the inside). I cant recommend National to my friends or family. :(

This review is of the BHM National Car Rental location and doesnt reflect my experience at large. The car I reserved several days in advance was not there. The young lady at the counter was mostly pleasant but was also uncommunicative and unhelpful. I had to push her for any information on when my car would arrive. I ended up settling for a smaller vehicle which was a disappointment since this was for a personal trip. It would have been so easy for a more skilled rep to have made this a better experience even if I did not get the vehicle I reserved.

The auto rental was good. But upon my return the employee took out a flash light and started to go over the whole body of my vehicle. She found a ding which you couldnt see with the naked eye unless you had a light. I then had to wait and be questioned about what my insurance policy. I asked they send me a request and I would have our company address. I felt singled out because I didnt see any other employees checking cars with lights. DISAPPOINTED after all these years of being a customer.

Other than the vehicle I rented drove horrible. We could not sleep on our 6 hr drive because the van shook so bad, when you got up to 60 miles. I have been renting from National for over 15 years and this is the first time there was a problem. Which is really good.But other than that it was Great.

All the National Car Rentals employees at the Birmingham airport were terrific, super friendly and helpful. BUT - the only 4 door car available had a TAG APPLIED FOR plate on it. On the third day I got pulled over by the police. It took the police 15 minutes to confirm the status of the vehicle and that made me late to a important meeting.

Upon arrival, I had to wait 25 min before being serviced. Because there was nobody there at 7am during normal business hours. Then I was given a rental that had not been cleaned. I didnt complain, I just sanitized the rental myself. But to return the rental at 6:30am and drop the keys in the drop box early that morning and that afternoon to receive a bill with an extra day rental was unbelievable. This let me know that nobody was doing their job upon arrival. Like checking the drop box early in the morning to account for the cars in the lot. Apparently they checked the cars in when they get ready and charge credit card for their untimely matter. Very disappointed with the service.

Excellent experience! We had an issue with another car rental agency and were in need of a vehicle with a hitch. The National agents were extremely helpful and got us exactly what we needed in no time. Ill definitely only use National to rent cars in the future!

The car was fine. The service was fine. (hence why i gave it 1 star) I switched to National a few years ago when I had major service issues at Hertz! Many times when traveling for business, I dont stop and look at the receipt as Im in a hurry to get into the airport. This week, when I got to my gate to input my receipt, imagine my surprise when my receipt showed $77 a day for a car. I NEVER book a car more than $35 (or rarely) given what we are permitted to spend on our expense accounts. I IMMEDIATELY called and the agent told me gee, sorry, I do see it at the lower rate when you booked, but your name was hooked to another business account and posted the higher rates.WHAT? You cant just change my rate. And she told me that since I already left the car, my statement was closed out and basically S--t, out of luck, shed send a note to the local car center, but she couldnt do anything else. Im sad and disappointed and if I am not credited, I will bring my loyalty to another company who might care more. Its 4 days since the rental was returned and I havent heard from anyone. I really hope someone contacts me-and credits my account-or I will be gone. Its that simple. No threat, just want good customer service and want the rate that I booked at, not a bait and switch, that honestly I think the BBB would have some issues with.

The pickup was efficient. The desk service manager was stellar. The car was amazing...2020 Mustang! When I returned the car a truck had pulled the wrong way in the drive leading to the return area and the kindest man came out and told me what happened with the truck and to give it just a sec. I’ve been Executive Elite with National for several years. Three weeks ago I rented a one way from Birmingham to Atlanta. I asked about an Infiniti and they told me it would be an upgrade charge. I told them “no, my company won’t pay for upgrades.” I then asked about a mustang and they said “sure, we can do that for you.” Once I got on the road and looked at the receipt, I saw they charged me for an upgrade. I immediately called customer service and was told, after being on hold for far to long, “no problem, we’ll get that corrected”. Of course, the bill remained the same and I never heard back from them. After 3 customer service emails from their website (which still haven’t been responded to) and two more phone calls which i was on hold a total of 34 minutes, I was told that it was a local branch decision and they don’t have a phone number so I couldn’t call them to discuss. Basically “you’re out of luck”. Well turns out THEY were out of luck on their scam because I live in Birmingham. I drove an hour round trip back to the location and confronted them directly. Even after recounting the initial interaction the branch manage Matt Wallace (via telephone - turns out they do have a phone) advised he remembers me authorizing the charge but gave the poor guy onsite permission to remove it to get rid of me. Mr. Wallace either has a bad memory or is unscrupulous - refusing to every speak to me directly, hiding behind “ no telephones” and his employee, tells me it’s likely the latter. Anyhow, as soon as I got home, I signed up for Hertz Gold. Time to start building status again. Oh well. Bottom line, check your bill BEFORE you leave the location. Otherwise, they will jerk you around.

Friendly. Competent. Only problem was “Tag Applied For” Rather than actual tag. Florida Sun Pass Doesn’t have a cash toll so I was running the toll booths. When picking up daughter at Key West Airport I was detained by police while they ran my license and car registration. Fortunately tag number was on rental form. I came back on non-toll roads. Happy ending but could have been a big deal.

First, the lady that greeted me and provided the car was very helpful. Although, the car I received was one of their last and was a Hyundai Tucson that was a smokers car and smelled like a cigarette, followed up by emptying a can of Glade air freshener. Absolutely disgusting... This is the first time I’ve ever complained, but this vehicle shouldn’t have been on the floor. Absolutely horrible!

The attendant was great. The standard payment policies are horrible. I am a weekly renter from Enterprise, which is the same owner as National Car Rental. There should be some option to pay with cash. I forgot my wallet in my personal truck, which was in the shop. I had my drivers license and I know my Emerald Club member #. You guys would not take my debit card as payment and not let me get my rental after I had been dropped off by a coworker. In the past 10 years, I have rented over 250 times from Enterprise and I have Executive Level status. I had to pay for a cab to take me across town to my house since you would not take cash or the only plastic form of payment I had, my bank debit card. This is a horrible way to do business with a regular customer.

Rented from the Birmingham Airport with ease. My car was ready, it was clean, had been well maintained, and was comfortable. I rented a Volvo SC90 and couldnt have been happier. The selection of vehicles at the airport was great as was the service!

Very frustrating start to my trip. I had reserved my vehicle 6 weeks in advance, only to find when I arrived, they did not have the SUV. I then had to wait for a vehicle to be returned by another client, taken to be cleaned and sanitized and finally given to us. A wasted hour that should never have happened. We had important plans to get to, and were late.

I am an Emerald club member with National Car Rental. Upon arriving to the Emerald Club booth, no one was in line, so, I stepped up to the window. There were two employees located inside the booth. When I approached the window, I spoke to the employee at the check-in counter, and the employee never said a word. He acted as if I never spoke to him. Then, he proceeded to ask me if I was an Emerald Club member, I told him I was. He asked me for my license. The entire time he checked me in, he acted as if I was disturbing him and he had an attitude. I received the keys to my vehicle and I left the window.Upon returning the car, the same employee along with 2 other employees were in the booth. I have been an Emerald Club member for years, and it has been several months since I rented a vehicle. The layout of the return vehicle center had changed. It was my fault that I did not read the sign, and followed my memory to return the car in what I thought was the correct location. Well, those three employees inside the rental booth allowed me to stand outside my car, waiting for it to be checked, for almost 10 minutes before the one I had the initial encounter with came out to tell me that he would get someone to help me.The level of customer service for this National Car Rental agency at the Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport in Birmingham, AL has gone down. I have been an Emerald Club member for years. And, to be treated in this manner was unacceptable.

My car was ready on time but when I opened the door, it reaked of cigar smoke. I told the attendant and he immediatley fixed it. No questions asked and made sure i got a comparable vehicle ASAP. Only negative is that the pickup is in a bad spot at the Birmingham airport. It is very dark down there and it is hard to look over the car for damage without using a flashlight.

If I had one word of critique, they could definitely spend more time cleaning the inside of the windows. Van was clean, outgoing service good.Motor alert light came on midway in 4 day rental - probably low oil, should be rechecked.Side doors stuck partly open. Had to be in park to open/close them.GPS extra charge - should be free since most cars have them included. Otherwise fine.

My reservation needed adjustment prior to my travel and was mishandled over the phone so when I arrived it was not in the system. The on-site manager quickly resolved the problem and honored my reservation both in vehicle type and cost with no hassle whatsoever. Rented a vehicle at Birmingham, AL airport location for a month on business. Let me start by sharing that I am in the Executive Elite tier of National and typically rent a car between 70-100 days each year. Typically, I just pick up the car of my choice from the Emerald Aisle and drive out in a couple of minutes. Not this time.The return date at the time I rented on record was 2 days prior to when I was planning to return. I brought this to the attention of the agent at the counter. I had to spend an additional 10 minutes as there were 2 ladies (not the best trained) trying to figure out how to correct the return date to the one I mentioned to them. They told me it was done and I was all set.I get to 28AUG and I receive an email from National saying that my car was due back on that day! They closed out my rental and sent me an invoice. The only option I had was to extend my rental on my National App and was charged an exorbitant rate for the additional 2 days. Even after I called National (on the day of return Aug30) when I returned, there still was no record of the change. Took them another 2 days to set the matter right.A pathetic experience for a so called Executive Elite member. Complete lack of customer focus. Wasted my time!!! Dont hold your breath if you are not an elite member at National.

Arrived around 11:30 pm at National and there were no cars available. This is not the first time that this happens at this location. Had to wait 10 minutes until a pick-up truck arrived and I had to take this one, no other choice. After me another 4 people arrived. I wonder how long they had to wait for a car. Being EC Executive Elite with a reservation confirmed you expect to get a car right away!

Im a Emerald Executive level - selection/ availability has steadily dropped in the last year. Car models seem to be from extreme to the other - I either get a loaded Audi Q7 ( fantastic and 6 stars) or Chev sewing machine that you cant even link your phone to ( Executive level? 1 star). Waited almost 15 minutes this time to get ANY car. People there are very pleasant to deal with though.

Had a standard rental with executive status. At every other airport you pick your car and drive away. Pretty simple.. but not here.. you have to wander the lot, choose a vehicle, and then walk back to tell the clerk the parking space number to get the keys. I did this several times with each time I was told that vehicle was reserved. So I waited for 30 mins to get something other than a minivan as I was told ALL the other vehicles were reserved. I’ll rent from someone else next time, this place is poorly managed.

Mind you the two National employees were nice and cool in their air conditioned booth. Service was fine and prompt, but you cant walk out and just pick a car. You have to go to booth out in the garage and they tell you to pick a car from numbered spaces behind you. Selection was not bad but i am executive elite and just does not feel the same as most other National locations

Was great. Picked up the truck in Birmingham and dropped it off in Memphis. The best part was that when I got to the Memphis airport, the greeting saw me get out of the truck and as I wear a brace and sometimes walk with a cane. he arranged to have us driven over the the terminal. Told me that it was a hike. I am sure that it was and he added years to my life! thanks to the crew in Memphis. You rock.

Picked up a car at 11:00 PM...all that was left were minivans and a pickup truck. Chose the pickup truck. It had a mechanical issue, so I called the next day to report it. They said I would have to come back to the airport to swap cars. There was no apology, very little concern about the inconvenience. After several minutes they found me a replacement car

Arriving mid morning, I was surprised to be 12th in line at the Emerald Club kiosk in the garage. When it was my turn, I was told to Pick a number between 1 and 25... when I asked why, I was told, Thats the car youll get - the number will correspond with the parking spot behind you.Glancing back, trying to be quick (there were at least 20 people behind me in line), all I could see were mini-vans and pick up trucks.... I chose 25 and ended up with a mini-van. It ended up being quite nice, but not what I expected or preferred (or reserved).

National Emerald Club is the way to go. I give this location a 4 star review only because they dont Emerald Isle with drive/drop and go service. But no worries! The service was fast and friendly both ways and didnt cost me much time.The only other reason this review is not 5 stars is that the rental area is cramped. Not much can be done about this because BHM is a tiny airport.

I generally do not complete surveys because I do not get a response...so I see it as a waste of time. I would like a response - not just an automated reply.I am an Emerald Club member. I find it hard to believe that Birmingham does not aisle service. I guess that is not going to change.One issue I had in Birmingham was that the person behind the counter did not know how to rent me a car. I reserved the car on-line and gave him the printed confirmation. I was there more than 10 minutes until a supervisor came to get me on the road.Second there was another rental agent in the booth with him who was not serving customers.Not sure what she was doing. Consequently there were four or five people behind me who were obviously not pleased.The supervisor was gracious and apologized which I appreciated.Being on the road is a pain anyway but having a less than great experience at National in Birmingham was disappointing. I can not remember at another National location that was bad.

Disappointed! I reserved an intermediate vehicle for three days. Instead of providing me the size car reserved the customer service rep decided to down grade the vehicle and pass it off as the intermediate. This vehicle had air, wheels and a radio, and no cruise control. When I complained he said it this was all he had and that I am not an Emerald customer. I am an Enterprise Plus Customer and that evening became a Emerald customer. When I returned the vehicle I couldnt get checked out because National was charging for the level of car I reserved and not the level I had. This is a very deceiving and poor practice for the representative and National. I am not satisfied with the apology, this was an unnecessary and extremely inconvenient burden to have to deal with while there on business.

Short walk from baggage claim. Easy to find. Offered me any car I wanted. Took a Chevy Traverse with 132 real miles on it. Paperwork a breeze. Car was flawless. Even got good mileage. Return was just as easy. Way to go Birmingham. Four day rental June 4-7. Drove 500 miles. If only every car rental was this easy!!!

I had a wonderful experience with national in Birmingham on my last visit. I walked straight out to the garage where there were many vehicles to choose from. The majority were mini van types, which is not my favorite for business travel, but they had a brand new Chevy crossover so I took that one. Since I already had a reservation it took a minute or so to check in and I was on my way. Since it was new, the car also has XM radio which was a plus because I had some driving to do. The return process was fairly easy as well, although it took a minute to find the drop off location and find the attendant, but he was very kind and polite and had my receipt ready a minute later. Everyone at this location was very kind and helpful.

Very quick check in and check out and if you are and Executive member you can always get the car you want as long as it is available. The staff is very nice and responsive.3 years later. Review has gone from 5 stars to 3 stars.I went to rent a vehicle a year ago and was told because I am local, I have to have a deposit ($200). I wasnt told until the employee had already run my card and I declined to get the rental. It took over a week to get my money back. This was a turn off because this no longer sets National apart from the other rental agencies in Birmingham. If Im renting with a major credit card, a deposit should not be held. I havent been back since.

I would not use this location if I didnt have to. They never have enough cars available even though I made the reservation in advance. You always have to wait in the garage for a car. They never seem to have enough people scheduled. This time I returned the car early in the morning and no one was available to check the car in. People in the office but they informed me it wasnt their job to check cars in.If I was allowed I would mark 0 stars.

Full Size cars? A Honda Accord is only a full size car in Nationals eyes. Im sorry, an Accord is not.I finally found a Dodge Charger that hadnt been cleaned or serviced.I Love Chargers because they are real road cars and have plenty of trunk room for my gear. But on this one, the Cruise Control didnt work, the front lighter socket didnt work and it stunk of smoke. Yet I put up with all that for a real car. I have Executive Elite status and you would think they could have a real car for me when I got there. I expect better maintenance.

I recently left my Galaxy Tablet in my last rental and thought that it was a total lost until I contacted the office at Birmingham Airport and spoke to Claire. She took my information and said she would call me back. Shortly after hanging up she called to inform me that my return rental had already gone out on a monthly contract. They didnt stop there, the individual from lost and found contacted me to inform me that nothing had been left on her desk that matched my description but she assured me that they would do everything possible to recovery my property. This communication started around 7:30 am CST and I received another call while at the doctors around 4:00 pm informing me that I could pick up my tablet. I applaud the National Rental staff for their service and integrity. Thank you all so much.

Great knowledgeable staff. Service was always superb. Been Emerald club member for so many years. National has always kept their promise as to Emerald Aisle available vehicles. Just couple of warnings ALWAYS check your PRINTOUT! sometimes National will give you an earlier time for vehicle return. i.e. if you make reservation for 3days 8p-8p, but you didnt get to pickup until 930p, then National will put pick up 930p, but return 8p on the printout they give you. Also, because you pick up early or late, the system will change the cost. So always check the printout they give you, and bring the confirmation email you receive with cost. So they can adjust the cost should this happen.

I travel for work and use National almost exclusively. In general I have had excellent experiences with National and plan to continue to rent from them. That said, my experience in Birmingham was extremely frustrating and disappointing. Even though I am an Emerald Club Exec member, we still have to check in at the kiosk in the garage. By itself, this would not be a problem at all. The staff working the kiosk were friendly and apologetic. However, we had to wait for 20-25 mins at the kiosk because there were no cars available. Zero. Talking with another customer in line, I was told that this is a typical experience in Birmingham. Once a car finally was available, all choice goes out the window. You either take what comes or wait even longer for the next car.As I stated above, I am very, very positive about National in general and will continue to rent from them. However, should travel take me to Birmingham again, I will consider other options.

The people are great in Birmingham. Great morale was evident as everyone was smiling and very helpful. The issue which is an issue at EVERY National Ive rented from this year is The Vehicles are filthy when you get them. The windows look like someone cleaned them with an oily, dirty rag. That is the one difference I see between renting from National and Hertz - vehicles are ALWAYS clean when I rent from Hertz. But I love the people at National.

The Dodge Journey was clean and in perfect working order. The National office had me on my way in less than 5 minutes. Turn in was just as easy.Covered walking from/to the terminal. The Birmingham National Team was perfect!

Quick Service and everything was very clean. Bad part is I ordered a luxury sedan and they were out when I got there, so they gave me a luxury SUV. This was great until I got the bill and they tacked on a huge bill. I called the company and told them the situation. The operator told me that I agreed to those terms. I did not, I agreed to the luxury sedan. Long story short, they charged me a bunch of money and did not give me a refund after giving me a nicer car than I reserved.

It was a good 20 to 30 minute wait at the counter. To make it worst they ran out of intermediate size cars. They offered a mini van, which I declined, and ended up with a compact. Not happy.

This was the best experience I have ever had renting a car, and we have rented quite a few! The staff was fantastic, knowledgeable, and very friendly. The car was brand new, clean, and an incredible deal. We will definitely be looking for a reason to rent a car again very soon!

Always nicer, newer, clean cars with popular features. Only thing I hate is getting two keyfobs cabled together; who has pockets for that? Also, with that extra fob hanging right at knee level one worries about possible injury in an impact. (No longer rentals those cabled together keys have mysteriously/conveniently fallen apart.) The rental company just doesn’t want the hassle of keeping track of the extra key themselves.

I was greeted at the EC booth by a charming young lady, who asked my last name and number. Then pulled up my contract, reviewed it with me and said she would need to locate car. She returned shortly gave me car keys, a local map, the location of my car, direction out of the facutility and to the Interstate south. Her services were excellent.

I came in on a delayed flight that landed at midnight which is when the location was scheduled to close. There were several people including me on our flight that had National reservations but the location closed and would not honor our reservations. Hertz stayed open and I rented with them. I recommend renting from the people at Hertz rather than this National location. It is obvious that the National employees do you not care about the business. I won’t be renting from this location in the future.

The car was mechanically sound but numerous small scars on exterior and stain on seat left me nervous if I was going to be blamed for any of them. GPS did not mate to holder tightly and was continual source of annoyance. But the car did get me to where I needed to go. Just seemed to be lower value experience than I normally have at National. Also the process of pick the number car that you want while there is a line behind you and you feel rushed, cant see all the cars, and you blurt out a number and hope for the best really is horrible and needs to change.

Seemed very unorganized. Dropped it off. No actual return line and no spaces to park it. Had to just leave on the lane of the garage somewhere. Service representative asked her mandatory questions, however, was not helpful in directing me where to go. It was my first time there and they seemed overwhelmed and have s chaotic system

Asked for a minivan, got a brand new minivan. Enjoyed the ride, it met the need, got my stuff where I needed to in style. The agents there are very friendly and helpful. No problems whatsoever
