So I called and told them that I was out of the country and needed to cancel my membership. They responded that the only way that they can cancel my membership is if I came in. I explain them in the military and I won’t be back until next week, they replied OK that’s fine see you then. So when I go to cancel my membership today they tell me that I have to pay another monthly fee because I did not cancel seven days prior! I feel that that is messed up and I shouldn’t have to pay an extra fee just because I didn’t show up seven days prior to cancel. They should’ve told me that over the phone or at least or explain that in the beginning of the contract this is some information I did not know. Buyer beware!

Please, please, please tone down the volume of the music. 99% of the people wear their own headphones anyway and I don’t want to damage my hearing my trying to smother gym music. I have seen some gym members walk around with masks under their chin or not wearing one at all for long periods and no one really seems to care. Other than that, it’s a great local gym with plenty of equipment and friendly patrons.

Beautiful facility with absolutely everything you can possibly need. Very well maintained and more importantly CLEAN. What I enjoy most about Retro Bayshore is the community of people. The members are supportive and friendly. The staff is courteous, attentive, and personable. To share one specific encounter, I dropped an airpod inside of the stair master (how? I have no idea) I notified staff and within minutes they had taken the machine apart to retrieve it.I travel from a few towns over just to train here. When equipment needs servicing it is fixed promptly. Rates are very reasonable as well.

I have the ultimate membership at the gym and what I really love about it is that there is no contract of a year! It’s so hard to find this so I’m really glad this gym offers this. I recently just joined here about a month ago and so far I love it here! Also, the customer service is really helpful. However, the music is very loud, lowering it a bit would be perfect! The gym is also kept very clean and so are the women locker room.

The crew is friendly and helpful, the place is kept clean, its only twenty dollars a month, and its within walking distance. If it wasnt for that fact that the mens room is frequently overflowing and unfortunately its the fault of the patrons, but still. Otherwise I would give it five stars because do enjoy my workouts here.

Horrible customer service. The owner is incompetent, unprofessional and extremely rude. Tired to intimidate me, threatened to call cops. I called to cancel over phone and was told I had to come in and sign then pay to cancel, when I got in I was told by the owner I only needed to pay which I did, I have record of the charge on my card, they’re camera clearly show me on that exact date in the gym for a few moments then leaving. I was charged two moths later on a different day then I would usually be charged when I was a member. When I called retro and I spoke with the owner he actually had the audacity to hang up on me after describing the situation. I immediately went straight to the bayshore location to speak in person. I was met with rudeness, ultimatums, threats and accusations of me not being truthful by the owner almost immediately. After maybe 30 minutes of back and forth and after being told I need to leave (AFTER I WAS CHARGED FOR THAT MONTH!!!!!) also after being told by the owner “It’s only a gym membership” yes it’s only my money you are stealing from me!!!! The owner finally agrees to refund me and cancel the membership l, of course they dragged they’re feet in the refund so I had to call back again to get that done. After this experience I looked through my records and found they charged me 2 times a month with a charge of 49.99 and a charge of 19.99 at two separate dates a month for a handful of months in a row on and off every few months, I literally have the charges on my card to see. This place is disgusting if they think that’s how business gets done. They should not consider themselves a good Business, the owner is a scam artist. Don’t not go to this gym.Update: 3/16/21Dear Steven it’s expected that you blame the customer due to the fact you run your Business so poorly, You shouldn’t be allowed to have a gym period. I will will filling a complaint with BBB (KEEP IN MIND THEY ARE RATED F ON BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU) I will be disputing the multiple charges of 49.99 month after month through my bank and you can deal with them. It’s highly unfortunate your answer to me being upset about you STEALING my money is I was on the verge of a panic attack. It’s laughable you chose the route you did in this response to deal with the situation. My wife was on the phone with me we have the whole interaction recorded it is also on his cameras I have the payment you took from my card is right there on file to see. I don’t know why you think you still have a chance to explain yourself, the proof is literally in writing. Why after 45 minutes of me arguing then you happily gave me a refund. I clearly paid and talked to him months before about canceling the membership. When I came in again he claims he doesn’t remember me but he remembers me over a review. Again your gym and Business is laughable I do hope you succeed at something in life.. this clearly wasn’t it. Again don’t go to this place as your can see stealing from members and blaming them is a regular thing here. Have been going here on and off for years. The staff is friendly and the place is clean. My only wish is that there was an extra power rack but there are plenty of spots to do the main compound lifts. Overall its a great place to work out in a convenient location for an awesome price.

Dont go to this gym if youre concerned of contracting COVID. It is an absolute free for all when it comes to masks. No one wears them, and no one enforces it.

My husband used this gym and when the pandemic hit they stopped charging our card monthly. We moved and got a new credit card. We are now having creditors call both of us for months of charges. When the gym opened back up and he never returned they put his account in collections. They are now ruining his credit for services that were never provided. FIND AN HONEST GYM!

I am originally from pa and was used to a private gym, I came up to the strip for a vacation with friends, not knowing what to expect I was extremely satisfied and awe shocked to how this gym compliments its liftersWith drinks, and a smoothie bar, and showers, hell even a movie theater while u do cardio there’s really not a better laid back gym around

DO NOT JOIN HERE. NO way. Cant believe they charged for another month! I cancelled in March for moving, then of course gym closed due to COVID. I understood I would be charged one more month for services available in APRIL. But not a random charge in SEPTEMBER because of policies. Their excuse? Unprecedented times YES THEY ARE. Which means the organization should reconsider THEIR POLICES.NO WAY...DON:T DO it. Numerous negative reviews here for extra fees. And poor communication regarding POLICIES. Forget it..Edit to response: dishonorable practice. Charged for month cancellation according to policy( 5!!! Months )later??? Not reputable at all. You should be trying to regain people rather than ensuring never to return.

Overall a great gym. The owner, Steve, does a great job keeping it clean and disinfected on a daily basis. Friendly staff, and good atmosphere.

Music played here is too loud. I do wear headphones, but at the volume that I listen to music at, I can still hear the gym speakers blasting music. I’d have to boost my headphone volume to unsafe levels in order for it to be loud enough to block out the gyms music. This can cause long term hearing loss. Most people wear headphones while they workout anyway, so there is no reason to have the gyms music so loud. Using an app on my phone, I measured the noise level to be an average of 77.6 dB. Please lower the music played at this gym.

I believe i spoke to the owner 10 days before my membership was supposed to be renewed and told be that i would not be charged for the next billing cycle as i wanted to cancel my membership but i was still billed for the month.

Been going to this gym for quite some time now, and it has only gotten better. Constant improvements being made to the equipment and the utilization of the space they have is done well. Being someone who has competed in bodybuilding before and will compete again in the future, those are important qualities for me. The owner Steve shows genuine interest in both the gym and it’s members. Feels much like a second home for me.

I joined the gym in bayshore about 2 weeks ago and I have to say I love it!! The staff is nice and friendly when walking in and out. The gym itself is very clean with the exception of the bathroom and lockers. They both could use an update. I have to say I really do enjoy going to this gym daily.

Never fail to get a work out in, been here years ago & come back & everything has been good & staff always been really nice & never came across any bad attitudes

So I had a membership with retro but had been working so much hadnt really used my membership in like 8 months. So during this whole covid crisis I was working the entire time and did not use their facilities as all due to the fact they were closed. Some how I missed a payment and they reported me the the creditors and gave me a derogatory remark!! I was given no notice by phone,text, mail, or email that a payment had been missed to correct the mistake.I sqaured that debt the day of and payed the creditors. When I contacted their financial department to cancel I was told I would have to go to the gym in person. During the time they were closed they charged me for a gym that was not open. They are still closed and this issue has yet to be settled. I have went to this gym 2 different times and they always try to report you to creditors even if you have money in your account. What they are doing is very shady and i do not reccomend this place what so ever. Planet fitness is a better option if you dont want to get taken advantage of for money you worked hard for.

I like the gym alot

I love the flexibility of the hours available to workout. The gym is usually buzzing with members and the staff is always there to help with anything. Personal training is great at my location and the trainers are all in. The equipment is usually in great working order and the locker rooms are in good shape. I’ve watched the ownership invest in the facility with construction updates as well as technology updates. I am a longtime member and see it continuing as long as I’m healthy and able to keep on going!

Compared to other retros this one needs a clean up. Some tightening in the business administration of it too. However the machines are good and there’s plenty of free weights. Not to clean bring some sanitizer wipes if your worried because the one there is always empty. Overall the place has a lot of potential.

Worked for them a couple years ago. When I moved on to another gym they set up my account again - without my consent and tried to charge my card without telling me! - and then put a derogatory mark on my credit when I refused to pay it. Completely fraudulent.On top of all of that, the gym is small, not cleaned well, and they will try to put people into contracts without telling them first.Just my experience working for them and using the gym prior to that.

It would have been nice to know that if you sign up it for a year that you truly cannot cancel within that year. And this was specifically the question that I asked the rep signing me up and got a quick Yeah you can cancel anytime!. I was cancelling yesterday due to me not showing up at all so why waste money. Luckily I walked in and saw a friend with a trainer and thought hmmm may not be so bad after all, and if shes going why not have a buddy to go with?! So for now the rating is 1 star for not being able to cancel when I wanted to. Ill give another review after I actually step in the gym.

Stay away. I joined the end of June and was also informed I can cancel at any time by Steve etc. I wanted to get healthier as I suffer from High Blood Pressure and I informed them about this and I needed to start slow.After a nearly 40 minute free assessment session lifting my own body weight and flipping a truck tire. etc. with a trainer named Tyler, I almost blacked out. It took 15-20 minutes of me sitting in a chair before some of the dizziness subsided and I was well enough to leave. During that time, Tyler was still trying to sell me on using him for future workouts at the same time apologizing for working me too hard during the assessment. Who does that while someone is ready to pass out?A day or so later I called to speak to Steve about canceling, he was busy and never returned my call. They claimed that I needed a doctors note to cancel, which I provided, again in person. They still havent canceled my membership. I have never once used their gym beyond my first free assessment session. I am not looking for a refund of my initial month in advance, etc. I just wanted out.The threatening emails from their billing company, ABC financial, have started with a bill over $100 now. I filed a complaint with the BBB, well see how far I have to go.There has to be a better gym elsewhere, these are not honest people. Avoid this place.Update *** Tuesday 9-24-19. I received an email from Retro finally canceling my membership with nothing further owed, as well as a follow-up email from the BBB with the same response from Retro.They apparently lost my medical note and I faxed them a duplicate at the owners wife/business partners request. Props to Melanie, an employee who helped me get a resolution and avoid any further escalation. Added a 2nd star for cooler heads prevailing.

If I can give this place 0 stars I would, apparently when you try to cancel they make you pay the rest of the year that your with them! In the beginning they say its no contract but yet I still have to pay for the rest of the year, you get tricked into signing an AGREEMENT? Which i believe its the same as a contract, very dishonest I wasnt told this when I was joining.

Retro fitness has a great selection of equipment that has allowed me to really target my problematic areas and build on my strengths. Its always very well kept and the staff are quite knowledgeable and caring. It has become an integral part of my routine and I genuinely enjoy being a member.-Larry B

Not sure what people are complaining about. Friendly Staff and Workout equipment is all that is needed. All the other services and rooms are just a bonus. For $20 a month you should stop being so picky . What do you expect someone to fan you off and feed you grapes while you workout? Its a Gym not a Spa. Its a business and needs to pay all the employees for upkeep on the place everyday so all of you cry babies dont complain or write bad reviews.that is why you have a contract. Go to another Gym on a Month to Month basis and see if you get a membership at $20 a month. Not happening. Not even close. Reason there is a year contract is so the place can make a few bucks. One downside of the internet is that the 99% of the customers that are happy dont go and write the reviews. They are too busy being happy.

Horribly managed, very difficult to get clear cut answers. Retro Fitness are running scams on opening multiple accounts under same name, then billing as unpaid. Be aware this will go on your credit report as unpaid. Nontransparent company and shady business. Would never recommend

Friendly and accommodating staff! Gym is always clean and has the most up to date equipment. I credit Retro Bay Shore with helping me lose almost 90lbs this year!!

Since December I have tried to close 3 accounts and they always give excuses but every month they charge me the membership, I have spoken with all the staff but they never give me a solution it is always someone new and a new excuse, I do not recommend this gym in administrative service loser time and money.

This retro fitness gym is great. I was former member at bay shore planet fitness where it felt like a prison not a gym with all t he stupid rules. I was forced to jump rope outside in the elements, rediculous. Retro is the exact opposite, they actually allow and have jump ropes!! Friendly staff, good equipment and clean. Glad I made the switch to retro fitness.

This is my preferred retro. Not too big but has all the right equipment. The people are friendly. Generally not super crowded during the week.

Came from Planet fitness and I can honestly say that all these negative reviews are inaccurate and false since this gym has the nicest staff and owners Ive ever met. Plus they are super helpful and friendly. They are always available to answer your questions and the gym itself is always super clean and organized

They make you sign a contract for a 1 year and when you are finishing the year you want to cancel they tell you over the phone that you have to do 60 days before your last payment and when you go to the gym personally 60 days before your last payment they tell you can’t cancel until the last month !! They tell you things first and then change the version !! Terrible service!! I hope to solve my situation because I need to leave the country and I don’t want leave debts!

This gym is great compared to planet fitness the locker rooms have toiletries you can use. Running with a tv you can control is a nice distraction. The gym never closes except for Christmas Day. The only thing I HATE is that you cant quit without writing a stupid letter and mailing it in a month in advance.

Good gym for the price you pay... There are a number broken machines that I hope they fix soon, but even so, I never have to wait.

Parking is always available. The place is clea n and machine are available even at the busiest times. Staff is friendly, smoothies have too much sugar

Ive been a member of retro for years, but I only just started going to this one because of the location.I even used to be a floor tech at a different retro.This gym is alright, except the employees really arent much help. I hurt my finger sliding a weight onto a rack without a stopper. My finger got clamped between the frame and the plate. Usually theres a rubber stopper to prevent this from happening. So i told the staff as soon as it happened to let them know their equipment needed servicing. They seemed to not really care. The kid told me the stopper is probably on the floor, which it was not. Now about 3 weeks later, nothing has been fixed. They seem to be pretty preoccupied conversing to themselves to take care of the gym and tend to guests.Im not one to complain like this, however as a former retro employee, this is absolutely unacceptable. I wouldve been fired if I had done what he did to me.

This gym is amazing. the colors of the gym bring me vitality and strength. i gained much strength and confidence there. alot of people are in greatshape there. i am grateful.

My family went here a while ago and didn’t really receive friendly interactions from the staff and clients. We hope this can improve for the future.

Half of the treadmills don’t workToday while one of the employees was vacuuming (in the middle of the day when the gym is crowded as always) they hit the plug on my treadmill which stopped it suddenly making me almost fall off it. Then the same employee continued to vacuum (with a huge extension cord trailing around the gym) around all the machines that members were trying to useYou ever think of cleaning the gym overnight retro?? So ridiculous

The gym is a descent gym except if you move they will screw you over. Moved 800 miles away back in july and they wont accept termination since I didnt have an address before I left. They asked me to send them proof of moving (address) via email and fax. Sent both once I got it and then they stopped replying to emails and phone calls. Tried to screw me for not only Aug., sept and October but plus a late fee for each month yet I sent all info they required by the 15th of July for me moving. So with that being said BEWARE THEY WILL ROB YOU TOO

One of the cleaner better kept at Retro Fitness has

Not the best gym, its a small area and they only have one squat rack for the entire gym. On top of that they have no pads to deadlift on, and youll be asked to leave if youre seen deadlifting (even if quietly). Since the gym is also right next to the high school it has also become a social gathering for high schoolers, cluttering up the free weight area, machines, etc. And finally make sure you dont sign up for the one year contract, i guarantee you will want to leave this place in 6 months and youre obligated to pay off the rest of the contract on the spot.

If youre looking for a cheap gym just go to planet fitness, they have more facilities and dont require 2 months of continued membership after cancelling.

Just come back after a few months and I was very dissapointed, place looks dirty, machines are filfty and I went early in the morning :-(

My membership expired January 7th, the gym continued to charge my card 2 months after my membership expired.

When I signed up they told me I could cancel at any time, when I tried to they said I signed up for a year membership. So make sure you actually read that contract.
