Nightmare bathroom remodel. We interviewed Chris Campbell of Hill Country Flooring / Austin Bathroom Remodels, along with four other contractors to remodel our 20-year old master bathroom. We went with Chris over the other four contractors because Chris is very personable, had a lot of great ideas, is a very good salesman and we really liked his designer. In addition to himself, he presented his entire team of people at our home (project manager, construction expert, another construction / demo guy and designer). Highlights: From Chriss detailed 10/21/20 proposal, total project cost was $33,557. On 10/26/20, we paid Chris $13,423 (40%) and our bathroom was demod. Original completion date of 11/20/20 did not occur as there were endless problems. We never saw the construction expert again, we never saw the construction / demo guy again, and we did not hear from our project manager until 11/17/20 (three days before the original completion date). We parted ways with Chris on 12/1/20, and asked him to deliver our doors, window and vanity cabinets that were paid for with our $13,423 check on 10/26/20. From our calculation, this was a very generous offer to part ways as very little progress had been made, and almost all of the progress would need to be torn down and rebuilt correctly by a new contractor. Chris pushed back and kept asking us to allow him to complete the project, but we did not want him back in our house because the remodel had been very stressful, with poor quality in several areas and minimal progress. Subs showed up not knowing the specifics of the job. The subs rarely, if ever, showed up when Chris said they would. There was no overall management of the project, and constant miscommunication, which pulled me away from my job multiple times, so I could try to help coordinate between Chris and his subs. Some of Chriss subs did a great job and others did very poor quality work. We were naive in trusting Chris would deliver the key components of the remodel (doors, window, vanity cabinets, quartz, tub) to our home in time to complete the remodel by 11/20/20. We picked out our quartz in October, and provided all of the details to Chris. No progress regarding our quartz was ever made. Chris never even obtained a bid for the cabinets to go in our water closet (included in his 10/21/20 proposal). On multiple occasions, Chris said the doors are in, and he simply needed to have them delivered to our home, so they could be painted and installed. After we parted ways with Chris on 12/1/20, he said he was checking on our doors, window and cabinets, which led us to believe he would have these items delivered (since we had paid for them on 10/26/20). We learned on 12/10/20, the vanity cabinets were still not in and there was a balance due of $1,423. On 12/14/20, we learned the doors and window had never been ordered. On 12/18/20, we finally ordered and paid for the doors and window again, this time, ordering those items directly from the supplier. After paying the $1,423 balance directly to the vanity cabinet maker (week of Christmas), I made multiple trips to get the vanity cabinets to our home. We are out thousands of dollars and have not had use of our bathroom since 10/26/20. Our new contractor is doing a phenomenal job, working very efficiently, sensibly, and with great detail, care, communication, etc. The new contractor is at our house daily, sometimes several times a day, to make sure everything with his subs is progressing as planned. Within 3 days, our new contractor perfectly completed what could not be achieved in over a month by Chris. The remodel still cannot be completed until the doors, window and tub arrive. At this point, it looks like our new contractor can complete our remodel by mid-February. If we could give a zero star rating, we would.
