Weve been going to Jims Automotive for over 25 years now. The service has been consistent throughout. I am not savvy with auto repair, so Jim & his staff have been very helpful in explaining details in a language that I can understand. Even though some people may think his pricing is a little high, I totally disagree. As the old adage goes, you get what you pay for. And in this case it is true. There is a level of personal care that Jim gives to every client. In fact, if you go during the time that Jim is in the shop, he will most likely toast up for you a piece of his famous homemade sourdough bread complete with butter. He bakes the bread right there in his office kitchen. Around noon the smell of baking bread fills the waiting room. Amazing stuff. Now where else can you get this kind of customer service & caring behavior? At Jims Automotive, of course!!

I found Jims Automotive after moving to Albuquerque over a year ago. From my hybrid battery replacement shortly after I arrived to my most recent oil change, all my car care needs have been handled professionally and efficiently. Jim and his competent mechanics take the time to explain whats going on with my older Camry every time I visit. Theres never any pressure to have work done, just an honest assessment of whats needed and what might be a good idea in the future. I am slow to trust, and Jim and his staff have won my trust and earned my business for life, at least as long as Im in the ABQ area! All this, a comfy waiting area, relaxing music and, if youre lucky, maybe a sample of Jims homemade bread, make Jims feel more like a visit with friends than a trip to the auto repair shop. I highly recommend Jims Automotive!

Jims Automotive was recommended to me by another mechanic. I drive a hybrid and the issues these cars encounter are highly specialized and require extensive knowledge in hybrid problems/solutions.I took my Highlander to him and he had the problem and solution diagnosed in a timely manner with a reasonable estimate. Jim took the time to explain to me the reason my car was having problems and the solution of how to fix her.He has a beautiful shop kitty, personable staff and displayed a level of personal care that went above and beyond my expectations. I will use him for all my automotive needs.I would recommend Jims Automotive to all hybrid owners needing maintenance.

I was traveling from Tucson and hit debris on I-25 in Albuquerque. I found Jims Automotive through AAA. I came in without an appointment. I was explaining my problem to the shop scheduler when Jim stepped out of his office and said lets help these folks right now. Overpriced place, considering the cost-benefit factor. We dropped off our car last August or so. It needed new hoses, the radiator to be replaced and other minor adjustments. We paid about $2000. Then, I dropped it off again a few weeks ago because the brakes needed adjustment, and the car needed brake fluid. It was okay. About $260 dollars. We used our AAA membership to get a discount. When I was leaving, they suggested checking some hoses because of leaking. I was surprised by that. I mean, we had paid for that already last month. They had not realized that. I had to let them know about it. They sent a technician to fix that thing. Then, they recommended bringing the car back if the leaking still persisted.Quite a bit disappointed.

Very happy with the repairs on my 1995 Jeep. Because it is an older vehicle, the work required some expertise and skill. The Jeep is now running fine and digging through the mud and snow in the San Juan Mountains.I notice some reviewers complaining about having to pay more than what a backyard mechanic charges, but I would rather pay reasonable industry-standard rates for professional repairs and parts I can rely on.I recommend Jims.

An associate at a rental place suggested to put the emergency brake on our Prius while towing it. Priuses are front wheel drive and after 600+ miles, this wore away our back brakes and caused the system to malfunction in several areas. We no longer had any brakes on the car. We were just passing through on the way to Nevada, and were panicked that we would be stuck only halfway to our destination.I googled Hybrid mechanics and found Jim. He was busy but fit us in anyway because he wanted to help. He looked over the car and gave us updates on time and everything going on. He took the brakes apart to assess any damage and ran tests for codes on the car. He explained each one and how it would affect the car. I appreciate it because its an honest way to do business and helps the customer feel secure in the process.Money is super tight for us after some life events, and we are lucky our brakes were only worn down about 50%. The cost of labor, inspection, and the tow came out to $335. Car troubles get very pricey, but for our money, we received service that felt like we were important. His coworker Wilbert helped us put our car back on the dolly and secured it perfectly. I am sad about the circumstances, but happy we called Jims Automotive.

His team works well together and his employees stay for a long time. I too am questioning the negative reviews for this business. Anytime I take my car in, they call me with the my cost of repairs BEFORE they perform them, and ask my permission if it is OK to go ahead or not. Or if you dont want it all done at once, they suggest what is critical to repair immediately and what you may be able to put off for awhile. I have never been ripped off by them. Came in one morning with a break in the top of my gas tank. Told the tech thats what the problem was and how I knew, and was theyd take a look at it that afternoon. Received a call a half hour before they closed that day letting me know that they didnt get to it but would need approval for the two hours book time to drop the tank and confirm the issue, which was fine. The next day, I again received a call late in the day to let me know that they werent able to drop the tank within the allotted book time, and would need at least 4 hours to get it off. At that point, they told me it looked like there was a break at the top of my gas tank, and Id need a new one, which I knew. They told me they were looking at probably $1200.00 - $1500.00 to get it fixed. I balked at that and told them to drop the car off the lift and I was going to come pick it up.I get to the shop a few minutes before they closed and, like I was a child, had it explained to me just what was wrong and why theyd need the time and parts they needed, basically trying to justify the cost. I told them there was no way I was dropping $1200.00 and would shop it around. Keep in mind that they hadnt even dropped the tank in nearly two days and could still only tell me exactly what I told them when I brought it in the morning before. At that point, the owner came around and said there was no one in the city who could do the work for the regular book times and I repeated that Id like to look around myself. He became irritated and asked if I thought his tech w/ 30 years experience didnt know what he was talking about. I said that Im sure he knew what he was talking about but that as a customer, I hadnt gotten the service I would expect and was being treated like a rube. I told them Id pay them $60.00 for the time they put in and to take it off their hands. The owner then said his tech had 4 hours labor put into it and their labor rate is something like $115.00/hr for mechanical. I told them theres no way I was going to pay that and just wanted my car back.I ended up paying them something like $150.00 to keep them from holding my car hostage, and took it elsewhere and had the work done, in total, for $600.00. I know these guys know cars, but the feeling that I was some kind of mark that they could gouge whatever amounts they wanted out of ticked me off. All in all, Id recommend anyone look elsewhere unless you have no other choice. The customer service and forthrightness is lacking, at best.

This is a very honest mechanic. I took my Prius there 1.5 years ago for a new battery, and it ran fine till just recently. I went back and Jim informed me that the battery was still under warranty. After further inspection, he determined that the big battery (my words) had died. The Prius had almost 200K miles on it. He said it would be roughly $2600 for the battery and labor, and would take about a week to order the battery and do the repairs. He called me back the same day to say that after looking further, it simply was not practical to replace the battery versus getting a new car. I would have taken his word for it and shelled out the $2600, but he was very honest with me about the condition of the car. He could have taken my money, but he did not. He also spoke with the person at the dealership where I got a new car about the trade-in. Very great service, and I really respect his honesty. He has been super helpful. Its hard to find honest mechanics, but Jims Automotive is trustworthy. Also, I accidentally left 6 CDs in the car (it had a 6 CD changer), and a couple decals on the back window. I left a message about that over the weekend. The sweet service gal got right back to me on Monday morning. She put all 6 CDs into an envelope that she made out of a piece of paper and put my name on it. She said she really tried to get the decals off, but theyd been baking in the sun for years and could not be removed. Really, really great service all around!

It takes no more than 2 hours to change, you just need to drop the gas tanks, unscrew couple screws, replace, and youre done! They also tried to change other parts that are working fine.I ended up taking my car back to another mechanic which cost me only $450 for parts and labor. I was very upset because they didnt want to give me my car back until I paid them 1 hour of labor $117.50. Avoid this place at all cost!

This place is a rip off. We were charged $110 per hour for just diagnosing our Jetta, totaling almost $400 for 4 hours (not including fixing it!). The Jetta dealer at University VW only charges a flat rate of $50 to diagnose, so we should have taken it there. Jim, the owner, called my husband back after my husband asked if he would match the price so we would have Jims Automotive do the work (fix a fuse box). Jim was nasty when he called back, saying that he would not match the price and told us that if we didnt pick up our car (it had been there almost 2 weeks, because he and my husband kept playing phone tag) that he would start charging us a daily rate to keep it there. Ive never heard of a reputable mechanic charging this much just to diagnose it; and if they did, they would apply it to the cost of the fix. Obviously, we picked it up and will take it to a REPUTABLE dealer to fix it. This guy is trying to retire on one diagnosis and seems very untrustworthy. Im surprised people continue to keep him in business. Bottom line: if you feel the need to donate your money, do so at a charity, not Jims Automotive - because thats exactly what youll be doing.

Ive always had a outstanding experience with them and never felt like i was being over charged. There work is timely but for the most part everything is warrantyed and if you had it fixed somewhere else and they did a crapy job they will help you get the job warrantyed and fixex properly. They are recommended #1 by AAA, AARP & BBB!The one thing is they are very popular and is hard to find time on there schedule. Staff and owner are super friendly and very blunt to the point. I truly appreciate there honesty.

Great job in a timely basis. Cost came in under estimate

600$ in labor 350$ in parts, One Radiator and Oil Filter Cap. I couldve done this myself. They didnt even fix what we told them to fix in the first place. The valve gasket has a leak, leaking onto the Alternator. They said we New Radiator. Once they fixed that they now want to bring up the Real Problem and Want Us to Spend Another 1000.00 600$labor 350$ parts. Doesnt add up. Do It Yourself buy the parts and have a mobile mechanic do it.

Was referred several years ago when I purchased a VW, and so far have had outstanding service. The guys really know their stuff, and actually seem to care. My impression is that they take pride in their work. I dont feel like Im getting hustled when im told about my repairs. If they find anything while working on it, they call first to update me before proceeding, and will tell me honestly if I even need to fix it.For example, I had an issue with my oil pan bolt where the threads were stripped (at a Jiffy Lube..my first mistake) and very slowly leaking oil. At Jims, they explain to me when I go in about the mechanics and what EXACTLY is happening in the vehicle (in such a way that anyone with a high school education can understand). They informed me that I could honestly drive it with the bolt leaking slightly as long as I keep an eye on the levels every few hundred miles, that the $600 repair could wait indefinitely if I dont want to spend that right away, but of course it is better to not have that leak.Another example, I had a torn CV boot which is dangerous because it could lead to a snapped axle going around a turn (this exact incident happened to a fried on San Mateo and Lomas, torn CV led to snapped axle (entire wheel fell off) while turning left, car slid into another vehicle waiting at the light. Nobody was hurt but it sure was expensive). They took me into the shop with my car on the lift, showed me the new boot installed, and showed me the old torn boot using it to explain to me the moving parts. Thats legit.Short story: Was waiting inside once, a veteran with mental health issues post-tours who looked obviously very confused and lost, walks in to the shop. He is from some nearby state (Oklahoma or Texas, not sure) and didnt even realize he was in ABQ. Long story short, Jim himself offered to drive the guy to either Kirtland or the VA to get this guy some help so he wasnt wandering around ABQ homeless (thank the Reagan admin for cutting funding for mental health institutions and GIs). Not many people would do that these days.Another good cue this place is legit...seriously always filled with cars, never slow, nice cars. Theyre certified so you wont void your warranty if leasing.Their labor charges are average, maybe slightly more but you wont need to worry about a scam or the quality of work. These guys tell it true and do quality work.TL;DR: Have taken my VW here for years, never disappointed. Honest, quality work. Would recommend.
