My family has always had pets, this is the best practice I’ve used, and have been with them for a few years and plenty of well visits, sick visits and a neuter surgery. You don’t get referred to specialists for basic stuff and office staff and techs are so professional, organized, and it’s well run.I have 2 large dogs and a cat. They see the same Dr for routine care and I’ve been very impressed with the Dr’s my dogs have had for sick visits as well. They are very up front with their treatment plan, recommended workup and costs. Veterinary care isn’t cheap no matter what, and all of their Dr’s have been spot on. My younger dog’s surgery for getting neutered was impressive. He came home comfortable and his recovery was perfect, very well managed.

I was referred here by my coworker and I am very pleased with my visit. Dr. Kawai was amazing and took her time(20 minutes) over the phone to thoroughly explain everything going on with my fur baby, Cookie. She answered all of my questions and I did not feel rushed which I am very grateful for. Thank you all for being professional and providing great service.

Horrible experience at this clinic. They do not respect your time and blame you for their mistakes on their part without trying to make it right. I had a scheduled appointment, weeks in advance and arrived on time. When I tried to check in I was told that my appointment was at a different time and I had the wrong time and that nothing could be done. I was so annoyed that I drove back home to retrieve the card to be sure that I had not made this error and drove back to Westside with appointment card in hand. I would understand if there was a pet emergency or if they acknowledged their error; instead they blamed me and assumed that I was trying to get over. I have used this establishment for over twenty years and Im not sure if its new ownership or what... but there has been a significant decline in customer service and respect. Save yourself the frustration and find a more professional establishment.

If there was a way to give negative stars I would definitely give that after the unprofessional way we were treated this morning. When doctor Murphy owned this business it was all about the health of the animals exactly how it should be. I already know what their going to say when they read this so Ill go first...I havent brought my dog in for a while. During covid I kept him home and safe, we did clinics and as long as he wasnt sick he didnt need to go into a vets office. I adopted titan from Westside and dr Murphy and have always brought him there because I trusted them with him. Titan git a bad cut on his head the other day while playing with our younger dog. We needed him to go in and be seen and possibly get antibiotics for him. When we called a very rude person informed us that because its been a while and they dropped him as a client and have no time for new clients! Hes not a new client...its the only vet hes actually a client of except for the clinics that I have mentioned. They told us to take him to tufts and hung up rudely. We actually called another vet and hes being seen in a couple of hours by a vet who has time for new clients. I am so disappointed in the path that this clinic has taken after it was sold by wonderful people who really cared about the clients and not the money. I can tell so many compationite stories about how Westside used to be when the owners cared. Titans files will be transferred to another vet, if they still have them because you know hes not their client anymore . Very unbelievable...dont ever bring your pets here!

Westside Animal is awesome for your pets health needs, big or small. We recently took Effie there forsome stomach distress and they’re so attentive, the vet calls the next day to see how they’re feeling and they really care about you and your pets. They’re super responsive with phone calls. We are so glad we found them and wished we had sooner! They take the stress out of going to the vet cause their staff is so helpful and they make curbside drop off and pickup a breeze.

Tl;dr: If youre considering taking your pet(s) to Westside, PLEASE read recent reviews before committing. As others have noted, the client experience at Westside has shifted dramatically since the practice changed hands a couple of years ago. Our four (now three) cats have been patients for just over a decade, and we always had positive experiences. In the past two years or so, however, weve noticed the following:1. Difficulty scheduling a short-notice visit when we thought our cat seemed out of sorts.- Example: We were told that the office books two months out; unfortunately, once we were finally able to get our cat into the office, our only remaining option was euthanasia or a blood transfusion, which we were told likely would not succeed. (Though we appreciate the condolence card that the office sent out afterwards).2. Encouraged to order expensive tests that would put a great deal of stress on the pet, even though the doctor admitted that the test likely would not be conclusive.- Example: Sedation and an $800+ ultrasound for a cat who lost weight since his last visit, and has no symptoms of illness.- This new upselling tactic is evidenced, too, by the subscription service they now offer.3. Abysmal communication between clients, front desk, and veterinary team. There are a number of new front desk staffers who vary in their empathy and competence.- Example: We were told to expect bloodwork results within 24 hours. A comedy of errors ensued (actually, that lab can take up to 48 hours, The doctor is out of the office today, It looks like someone called you yesterday, etc.), and we finally acquired the bloodwork results after 8 phone conversations over the course of 5 business days. As a concerned pet parent, this was distressing and raised concerns that the office either had not actually drawn blood or that they had lost the sample.- Example: New, automated appointment reminder system that staff evidently have not been trained to use. We regularly receive erroneous texts and postcards encouraging us to come in for vaccines that we are up to date on, despite multiple phone calls to the office asking to correct the error. Obviously, this raises a concern that certain vaccines were never actually administered, even though we were charged for them, and that our pets are not adequately protected from preventable illnesses.4. Concern over quality of care:- While the office has excellent COVID-19 safety protocols in place to protect its staff, because we cannot go into the exam room with our pets, its not possible to know whether a vaccine or test was actually administered.- After a vaccine appointment, we dealt with lethargy, no appetite, shivering, and a limp with two of the three cats. We were not warned about these side effects, which lasted for about a day, and while all cats are fine now, it was understandably concerning.**UPDATE July 2021 (original review from May 2021): Transferred Ollie, Patrick, and Marvins records to VCA Abbott, who have been nothing short of amazing: responsive, communicative, and empathetic to our concerns. They offer same-day sick pet visits (see #1, above--no more waiting 2+ months!) and they quoted us just $400 for the same ultrasound procedure that Westside wanted to charge $800+ for (see #2, above). Such a relief to have trustworthy veterinary care providers after so many recent missteps at Westside!

They tried to sell me on meds that didnt apply to the problems my pup was having, almost gave my dog DOUBLE the dosage on rabies (I realized while he was in there), and even tried to sell me on a SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE. Now after I switched vets they reported to the city for dogs that I do not own. What a joke of a company. Weve been going here for over 7 years and have recommended them to many people. We recently had to put our dog down (which they handled really well - though trying to get her seen leading up to it was miserable, due to reception desk - I hung up in tears at one point when they refused to see her - they ended up calling back and agreeing to let me make an appointment) and then we also added a new puppy and kitten to the family. Even though we still have two cats who are patients there and are seen regularly, they wouldnt let me make a sick visit for our new puppy because hes a new patient. This was after not letting me make an appointment for either the puppy or kitten previously and recommending I find a clinic to bring them to to get them vaccinated - they hung up before I could even add the new pets to my account. When I called for a sick visit, I was told in an accusatory tone that I had never added the puppy to my account. I explained why, and again, they ended the call without offering to add the new animals to my account or speaking to a vet about my concerns. I can understand if we were new clients to the practice - but this is crazy. Most of the vets weve seen have been great - but not being able to speak to a vet or make an appointment is frustrating. We used to love this place, but have been treated differently and noticed a change in the past several months. Currently looking elsewhere for our veterinary needs for all four of our animals (soon to be five).

I have a 5 year old dog who had his annual visit on October 2020 at the West Side Animal Clinic. During that visit Dr. Taddei suggested he needed his teeth cleaned because of a significant amount of tartar. In fact, she made me believe that it should be done ASAP. Leaving his appointment that day, I made the 1st available dental appointment for him on January 14th, with blood work done a week earlier. I was told he would have to be under general anesthesia and stay in the clinic until the end of the day to make sure he is doing OK. Fast Forward to January 14th: I dropped my dog at Westside Animal Clinic around 7:30am. About noon, I got a call from the vet, saying that the procedure went well, no teeth needed to be pulled and that my dog’s teeth were “the best I’ve has seen in a long time”. Hm, I thought it was an interesting statement since I was told in October how urgent it was to have my dog’s teeth cleaned. I picked up my dog about 5 pm, after paying slightly over $600 for the procedure in addition to the $75 I paid for the blood work a week earlier. That evening my dog was definitely groggy still feeling the effect of full anesthesia. I was told that was to be expected. Later in the evening I received an e-mail from the vet who did the dental cleaning- it was the post-op report. The following is a direct quote from this report: my dog “had a dental procedure today. He had a minimal amount of dental tartar. All the teeth were scaled and polished. Full mouth x-ray were obtained. Dog did not need any teeth extracted today.” Where is the urgency I was told about on the October visit? The following morning I called West Side Animal Clinic and talked with both the manager and Dr. Taddei. It appears my healthy dog underwent full anesthesia for a procedure that was NOT an emergency. To add insult to injury, the only excuse/explanation that they could provide me was that I did not understand the first vet’s explanation. Seriously, is it because I have a slight accent that I must not have understood? BTW, my English is just fine!My family has been bringing our dogs to West Side Animal Clinic for over 25 years. We never had any issues, particularly when Dr. Murphy was there - he was compassionate, understanding, and only provided necessary care (providing all options at each visit). When we adopted this dog, a little over 2 years ago, we never even considered other vet clinics. I learned a hard lesson today: if you want to be taking advantage of financially with little regard to your pet - West Side Animal Clinic is your place.

I have been going here for years but will no longer!! Some time ago they changed over the computer system. Several customers wound up with charges to their accounts that did not belong there. I was one of them!! I was told by a woman who was supposedly the accounts manager that she would take care of the problem and remove it from my account. Nope! Every time I went to them, for well over a year, it was the same issue. I constantly had to explain to them what was told to me. I have never owed them money!! I paid all bills the day of the visit!! This last visit, it was charged to my card. A $50 visit turned into $94. While this is not a lot of money, it is clearly unprofessional from a business standpoint. I was told they will look into it. What was there to look into??? Simply remove it from my account! I will NEVER go back to them!! They have successfully taken my money (that I never owed them) and will probably never see it refunded back to me!! Thieves!!

My dog was seen by this clinic her entire life and I’ve always ranted and raved about them. However, once she got sick, we were taken for an absolute ride. I was ignored, what I was seeing at home and explaining to them was irrelevant and she was treated for everything under the sun in 2 months time. In addition to the weekly $300-$600 spent on medications and treatments, we were sent out for multiple xrays and ultra sounds . Back and forth.. multiple times . To no avail. Between west side and wachusett emergency, well over $3,000 was spent with no answers or even a hunch. Xena was placed on metronidazole this ENTIRE time despite me telling them it wasn’t making a difference. Her insides were destroyed. Finally after calling several times and requesting a call back from the doctors (which I never received). I decided to bring her Somewhere out of their hands. One poop sample and some blood tests.. it was declared she had HGE . They were floored that she was given the amounts of medications of their kind for as long as they did despite the symptoms not improving but only getting worse. We attempted one more treatment plan but it was too late for Xena . A colon transplant wouldn’t have even saved her at that point . She was sent over the rainbow bridge shortly after realizing this . Needless to say, any future pets our family will have.. will not be patients if West Side . The condolences card was a rather nice touch once they were informed she had passed .. would have preferred some compassion and cooperation though .

I was a client of this clinic for 12 years with four different dogs. I’ve been there for everything from wellness, and everything from minor to major illnesses. I always had a great rapport with the doctors and trusted them. Dr. Murphy was our primary vet, and I saw Dr. Trom and others on occasion. I always felt they were being forthcoming with us. They would tell me when something was really needed or not. They were responsive to questions, phone calls etc. The front desk staff knew my name, they knew my dogs ( even when they had not seen them for a year ), and it was an all around good experience.Dr’s Murphy and Trom sold the business to prepare for retirement, however they were on staff for awhile so I continued to go to Westside. At the time I had two older dogs with chronic illnesses so I was there quite a bit, and I noticed right away ( in a matter of a week or 2) that many prices went up quite a bit right away. I could deal with the increase to still have Dr. Murphy. One of my pups seemed off one day so I brought him in on Dr. Murphy’s day off, and they did some blood work and told me I needed to take to Angell or Tufts right away. I did, and was told after a review of his records that these mild elevations were normal for him, that he had them 6 and 12 months prior, something they would have seen if they had reviewed all of his records FROM that clinic. It ended up costing me an extra $500 at an emergency clinic and a lot of anxiety.Next time he was sick they called to sell me $1000 in extra tests, and said most of it in a barely understandable voice mail- they didn’t call back when they said they would .....it was so impersonal.Recently my dog was placed on a liver support supplement, that a prescription is not required for. I called to get a box on a Friday, and was told the doctor had to approve it, and she was not in until Monday, and I would get a call back. The call never came, as a client with the practice 12 years that was disturbing to me.Now it’s just another corporate entity, and pets and clients are just a number. It’s all about what they can up sell. I won’t be back.

I’ve been bringing my dogs here for quite sometime and after the ownership changed, and Dr. Murphy left, this place has gone downhill. My Frenchie had her nares done about a year ago, and noticed her nostrils grew back as if she never had the surgery. So I called and made an appointment for her to be seen to determine if she needs the surgery again. I brought her in and Dr. Durgin agreed she does need the surgery again, but they no longer do the surgery and I have to take my dog to Sturbridge. No one ever told me over the phone while making the appointment that they don’t do nares anymore. My time was wasted and they have the nerve to charge me $62.00 for an office visit, when I could have just taken her to Sturbridge. I’ve been trying for a week to get a call back from the director, only to be told this person is not available. I’ve called 3 times. Needless to say, I’m transferring care to another place that hopefully, will not be as money hungry.

The vet told my fiance and I that if we surrendered her cat that the bill would be squared off because she wanted the cat. We go in to sign the papers to surrender the cat and the secretaries tell us we would still have to pay the entire bill even if we surrender the cat. We told her to speak to the Dr. Because we were told otherwise now the Dr. States she never had that conversation with us. Seems to me she just wanted to steal our cat. We had been clients at Westside Animal Clinic since it was established in its prior location. Dr. Trom and Dr. Murphy have kept 8 of our dogs healthy during this time and they have put five of them to sleep when they could no longer keep them living comfortable lives. They became like members of our family; we put our faith in them, we trusted them, and we knew that they also cared for us and for our animals. There was consistency behind the front desk, and when we would call for an appointment or in an emergency, people knew who we were and they responded to us warmly.Since the new corporate takeover, things are no longer the same. There is constant turnover in the front, appointments are hard to get, and when you walk in the door, people may or may not know who you are. The vets seem to be part time people who dont have the investment in the practice that Dr. Trom and Dr. Murphy did.We decided that once Dr. Trom officially left we would change vets because of our dissatisfaction with the new management. When I called to ask that our records be faxed to another vet, I wasnt even asked why I wanted to leave. After having been patients at the office for more than twenty years, I would have thought that the new owners would have wanted to know the reasons for our choice to move to a new vet; obviously, we are not people who rotate from practice to practice. This in itself is symptomatic of the coldness and the corporate air that now permeates a once wonderful place.

I generally never post online reviews, but I am compelled to now because of a recent visit to WAC. I have taken my cat, Martha, here for years - in fact, Martha was being treated here since before we joined forces - and I have found the staff overall to be helpful and knowledgable. In general we are treated with respect, and they have been able to accommodate visits on short notice when needed. I have even been able to consult with them over the phone without having to bring her in for a visit at no charge. I have specifically appreciated Dr. Vincents willingness to take the time to explain in great detail what might be happening with Martha, as well as strategies for taking care of her, that are also backed by science; I love that she shares the research findings and theory behind what she is doing when we meet! If it is not already clear, I have found Dr. Vincent, and the rest of the staff with whom I have interacted at the WAC, to be very thorough in caring for Martha. Most recently, they helped me with being able to afford her treatment needs during a time of financial stress - to me this demonstrates that they care above and beyond for the heath of their pets (and their pets people!). After this visit, Dr. Vincent personally called to check in on Martha and to inform me that we would continue working together on making her treatments affordable - she went out of her way to make sure that Martha would have what she needs to get better without causing me undue stress. I am grateful that Martha is being cared for by such warm and compassionate people, and I hope that others find their pets to be well-taken care of here, too.

I left a five star review when it was Dr. Trom and Dr. Murphy. They were great as was the staff at the front desk and the techs. Theyve since retired and the practice was sold to a corporation. Ive been bringing my animals to them for 25 years. One visit for a regular yearly with one of my dogs left me feeling short changed. It wasnt the same and I felt like a number being shuffled through. There was no time spent with my dog and no discussions. I was told she needed full dental and her teeth were a mess. Less than a year prior she had one done and they took most of her teeth. I was told they would work up an estimate. I never got that estimate or even a call back to follow up. Thing is, Ive spent over 3K in the past year on my animals because if they need something done, I have it done. This time, I felt like they just wanted to give her the shots she needed and getting to the next appointment. I, like the hoards of other loyal clients, have since requested my animals records be transferred to a small caring (uncorporate) vet. One where the doctors and everyone else in the practice can actually be the loving pet caregivers that they signed up to be instead of the corporate robots that they got wrangled into being at West Side. So sad. That being said, Ill always have a warm place in my heart for the original West Side, Dr. Trom, Dr. Murphy and the fantastic people at the front desk and the techs. All of whom laughed with me and when the time came, gave me a hug and cried with me.

The animals in the clinic were all shaking and nervous. The staff was rude, judgmental, and unhelpful. Truly unbelievable that this clinic has been open as long as it has. Will not return, would not recommend friends, family, or even enemies to bring their pets here. Beware.

Words cannot describe the level of care our cat has received at Westside. Dr. Trom, Dr. Murphy are simply amazing. I know other reviewers have complained about wait times and not being able to get through on the phone - but that is a clear indication of just how busy they are because people love them! Since I have been going to them they have responded to the demand by adding additional vets to assist. I adopted a one year old cat from the MSPCA who had special needs: a hole in his heart who was given only a few months to live without proper treatment. Under Dr. Troms care, he has thrived and weve had him 7 years longer than we ever thought we would. They are always willing to squeeze us in if hes having frequent asthma attacks or his heart rate increases. They never nickel and dime us for every little thing (as we are clearly frequent visitors!) I will never go to any other vet as the Doctors are so wonderful. Weve boarded our cat there as well and he wasnt happy - but that certainly had nothing to do with the wonderful staff that did their best to make sure he ate, received his medications, got him to take his 2 inhalers per day! Believe me, the daily rate for boarding was worth its weight in gold to know that he was in a safe place, where his medications were administered and he was monitored on a regular basis. I am forever grateful to Dr. Trom and Westside!

If I could give an extra star I would.. We (partner and I) just went through a very trying, very heavy few months with the love of our life, our 7 year old yellow lab, Deegan..He was our child.. a companion that we would go to the end of the earth for, and know he would do the same for us.. We had been to a few other vets with him, and the usual un-compassionate, over-priced, almost car salesman-like approach was just what I had assumed was the norm..Then I came across Westside, after a referral from a friend. Dr. Roy was Deegan appointed Vet. She was amazing to say the least. Not just Dr. Roy, but all the Vets (Dr. Klingener, who assisted us a few times and Dr. Trom, who helped us let Deegan pass so peacefully, thank you..) and Vets techs, all the girls at the front desk and out back were a shocking change of pace.. You could feel the love and compassion not just for Deegan but for any animal that walk through their doors. My dog was special..I knew it, and even if this is how they treat all animals at Westside, they made it very obvious that he was special to them as well. He was diagnosed with Chronic Renal Failure and given a month, maybe less in March.. The whole team there were so helpful, so kind, and so good to my boy.. He was actually excited to visit every time we were in because of the love he received from every single one of them.. Pricing was actually extremely reasonable, and compared to others in the area, it was EXCELLENT.We ended up keeping Deegan well beyond what we had been originally told with their help (just this Saturday we had to let him go on his next adventure, as much as we struggled with the decision), and I will be forever grateful. For one of a thousand examples I could give, there was a Saturday afternoon in May that Deegan seemed unusually not well, so I left a message expecting a call on Monday.. One of the techs called me at 530 that evening after stopping in by chance. She WAITED THERE FOR ME TO ARRIVE WITH HIM to give him some extra medication and keep him happy. ON A SATURDAY NIGHT! I was blown away!Honestly, if you love your animal and want the best for him, I couldnt recommend Westside enough. Even if you are not local, they are beyond worth it. I again, cannot express the gratitude and love I have for the team there.. Thank you for helping make Deegans last few months as great as they could be given the unfortunate circumstances, and for being so compassionate and kind to Mike and I as we went through this horrible situation..

I cannot recommend Westside Animal Clinic enough. The entire team is kind, compassionate and extremely responsive. Most importantly, our dog is extremely scared at the vet and requires extra precautions. the entire practice has been understanding, accommodating and most meaningfully to me, nonjudgmental. Your animals are in very loving and knowledgeable care here!
