Had Nationwide and my agent of decades retired. I called to have my home & auto policies canceled effective on a future date. Was told to send an email instead. Apparently got a junior agent (I wont name him here, but told the agency) who canceled my policies effective immediately. I didnt even know because I received no confirmation or communication that it was terminated and found out only when I checked my account online to change the date I wanted the policies to be terminated.I emailed my assigned junior agent to ask why the policies were cancelled. Instead of calling me or asking me for more information if he needed it, his only response was, Check your email, referring to the email where I originally requested the FUTURE cancellation of the policy, which had the EFFECTIVE DATE right in the subject line as well as in the body of the email. Clearly, it was not supposed to be cancelled now when I sent the email. If he was not clear on that, he should have asked. I found this rude and unprofessional. I replied with a screenshot of my online account showing the policies were cancelled prematurely and told him someone else would take care of it. Luckily, I also called and was being helped by Rachel. I would have expected a phone call immediately from him to clarify or rectify the situation, but no such professionalism. If I werent terminating my policies already, I would take my business elswhere.I ended up calling the agency directly because the number that was listed in my junior agents signature block turned out to be a fax. Luckily, Rachel answered and is taking care of everything to reinstate my policies without lapse until I want them terminated.She called back to say that he scheduled my policies to be canceled in the future on my specified dates and it shows on their system that its still active, but my online account on the official Nationwide.com site shows they are both canceled and I cannot access any current policy information. Regardless of what happened, there should have been some sort of confirmation from my personal agent on what was done to avoid confusion. Ive had Nationwide for decades and my family as well. Multiple homes and cars and changes in policies over the years with no issues whatsoever with my old agent. If I were to stay with Nationwide, I would probably switch agencies.The personal customer service I received for decades is clearly lacking and feels much more transactional. For improvement for other customers, I would recommend:- Being more accessible as the owner of the agency, particularly at least on the first call for new customers and especially for long-time legacy/multi-generational loyal customers.- I understand the need to document communications in writing, but maybe not just tell customers to email an agent the first time they interact with your agency or have a question. Better to give personal customer service and have the agent follow up with an email documenting the conversation. More work, but makes for more loyal customers.- Pay attention to detail and follow up when taking any actions to confirm with the customer that theyve been taken and give them a chance to review in case of any errors.Normally, I dont write many reviews, but the difference in my experience with Nationwide with this one very important matter was so vastly different from all the decades prior that I felt compelled to say something. At least they have some people at the agency, like Rachel, who seem on top of it, but would be better if people like that were the first impression and not when theres an issue.
