My son has been really enjoying his experience with Taekwondo. Master Mercer and his staff are top notch instructors. They teach self discipline, confidence, respect, and giving back to the community. There is a reason theyre the oldest martial arts school in Wilson, what they do works. I would highly recommend giving them a chance.

I earned my black belt here when I was young. My six year old son has now started his journey here and loves every second, he looks forward to class and practices at home constantly. Great place for both you and your kids to practice the fundamentals of martial arts while having a great time engaging in physical activity.

My daughter (11) had the opportunity to train alongside Master Mercer. She arrived with previous experience. In order to determine her ranking, he took the time to evaluate her technique and placed her where appropriate; he didnt just hand her a belt of equivalent ranking. This quickly revealed Master Mercer is a just and respectable instructor and is genuinely concerned with his students success in his school.During orientation, he provides his students with a neatly-designed, well-organized booklet containing valuable information about Dongs MA School in which he introduces the school (and TKD) history, rules and expectations, programs, uniform significance and badges, etc. Before signing up for a program, he first allowed my daughter to discuss her motives for taking TKD and listened attentively as she elaborated on her goals and desires. My daughter’s typically shy when first making another’s acquaintance; however, Master Mercer’s peaceful, welcoming energy rendered her communicative. Pleasantly surprised, I was discluded from portions of this office conversation. He’s excellent with kids!I would describe his TKD instruction as traditional- a setting in which the mind, body and spirit are fortified and effective self-defense skills are developed. The students were organized on the mat as chess pieces on a chessboard, precisely mimicking their passionate instructor’s every move. This was occurring during the pandemic, so I watched from outside his academy’s windows. Master Mercer strictly enforced all possible COVID precautions- masks on everyone’s face, temperature verification upon entering the facility, social distancing, and he temporarily discontinued sparring- not entirely; students don’t make physical contact with each other, but are arranged in groups and practice learned techniques amongst each other.Within days of enrollment, my daughter, who transferred from another TKD institution, confessed she enjoyed this setting much more. She was comfortable at Dongs MA school, got along well with her peers and looked forward to each training session. With all this said, I regret having withdrew my daughter from such a great school (as a result of relocation) because I am confident instructors as Master Mercer are hard to come across!

I have been an adult student at Dongs Martial Arts in Wilson for 6 years now. All students are challenged both mentally and physically to do the best that they can in an environment that is supportive. There is a willingness between students to help each other achieve their goals. Students of all ages can benefit from the exercise and discipline at our school. Also, we are taught self-confidence to stand up for yourself and to ultimately chose the right thing to do.

Master Matt Mercer and the Wilson, NC branch of Dongs Martial Arts have been wonderful for our children. Our middle child is now approaching black belt level, and has learned perseverance, coordination, and many other skills he will use for the rest of his life. (Our oldest has already attained this honor) Great program; great branch! Thank you Dongs Martial Arts!!!

I joined this school in 2007. I have enjoyed training and progressing through the ranks. The workouts keep me entertained, or I wouldve stopped by now. The students show respect to Mr. Mercer and each other.

I went with my friend to this dojo and while I was there I witnessed my friends five year old brother get yelled at for falling. After getting back up the sensei made him, a FIVE YEAR OLD BOY, run in place for three minutes. There’s also a kid with autism who tends to sway in class. This CHILD was yelled at and doesn’t have as much control over his mind as the other kids, and I don’t mean yelling, I mean screaming. These children don’t completely understand what is wrong or right. The sensei doesn’t let the kids go to the bathroom during class. These children’s brains aren’t fully developed yet and to be taught this at such a young age has a huge impact on their mindset in the future. I understand the need for discipline but being this harsh on 4-5 year olds isn’t acceptable at ALL. Being taught going to the bathroom is wrong isn’t what you need to teach your kids. Being called out in class for falling and having to run in place was embarrassing and humiliating for my friends brother. If you’d like to witness your kid being disciplined for simple tasks such as aforementioned, I’d suggest either take them here, or go to therapy.
