Thinks he owns the Truckee River. Very rude to anglers that fish the waters near his property. I personal cant stand people who commercialize my favorite pass time and then ruin the experience for regular people trying to enjoying our public waters.

I’m giving him two stars because my husband landed a fish. But I spoke with him numerous times before our trip and told him we’d taken a few guide trips but that we didn’t have a lot of experience. When we met him in the morning he got “mad” at us because we didn’t tell him we were beginners. We spent the first hour in relative silence. We told him we’d mostly euro-nymphed but he suggested streamer fishing. That was fine with us because we like learning new things. The day was pleasant enough. But after we parted ways that afternoon, two guys in the parking lot who had been talking with him said he was saying he didn’t put us on more fish because we wanted to “streamer” fish! He said we could have landed far more if we euro-nymphed. What?!?! We didn’t even know what streamer fishing was before we started. We did it because he suggested it. And why would you ever talk about clients to strangers. The whole thing was so bizarre!

Had the good fortune, and the good taste, to marry a woman who presented me with a guided fly fishing trip on the Truckee this past weekend. She knew Ive been dying to learn the river and had never caught anything larger than bait-sized in the few trips Id made. So we hooked up with Matt Koles. Matt took us out, worked with my wife to get her going (had never fly fished before) and then spent the next few hours showing us the ropes. We caught a couple quality rainbows, and my trip was already made. But the goal was to go with a guide who could teach us enough to replicate it on our own... and thats what we got. The next morning, we set out to see if we could replicate what Matt had shown us. My wife hooked into her first Rainbow, and I caught another nice Bow as well. But the highlight of the day was this Brown... my first. Pulled her out of the same stretch of river Id fished twice before on previous trips with absolutely zero success. A few hours with Matt, a new approach on the type of water I was fishing and how to get the flies in front of them, and this was the result. Wont happen for everyone, but certainly wouldnt have happened without Matt. If youve got a chance to explore the Truckee, spend some time with Matt and improve your skills a little... because you never know what that one extra tip may bring.

Awesome half day trip! Going out there not knowing much about the Truckee River Matt put my dad and I on some fish and taught us a bunch. Definitely going to book another trip in the spring/summer!

Little guy with a huge ego. He has an attitude problem and doesnt deserve to be a guide. DO NOT GIVE THIS GUY BUSINESS. Went out with Matt this summer and boy was he a jerk.

My husband and I went on a trip with Matt on the Truckee river and had such a good time. Matt was quick to respond ahead of the trip to answer all questions. He was on-time for our appointment and was very knowledgeable. We got our moneys worth in all the tips and tricks of the trade. We would recommend him to friends and family and might try to work with him again as the pyramid lake season is quickly approaching:)

My wife and I recently moved to the Truckee area, and after struggling my first few times fishing on the Truckee river, I decided it would make sense to spend a day with a local guide to shorten the learning curve a bit on my new home waters. I actually ran into Matt on the river (it is always a good sign when you find a guide fishing on his day off!) and we agreed to fish the following Friday. Matt is not only a very good fly fisherman, he is also a very good teacher and really took the time to answer all of my questions (I had a bunch) and provided just the right amount of coaching to get me dialed in without smothering me. By the end of the day I had caught some amazing fish, learned some great new techniques, had a hands on tutorial on how to build the rigs and leader systems we used, and went home with a page of notes and high hopes for my next trip to the river. From beginners to old pros, I highly recommend a day with Matt, you wont be disappointed.
