I was supposed to meet with the owner regarding working at this gym. When I told her an hour and a half before hand that my spouse needed to go the emergency room, she asked me if I, “Could’ve given her better warning.”Yeah, I’ll give you more warning next time my veteran spouse wakes up with no feeling in his legs. Nut job. Get some compassion.
Owner is a terrible person. Staff is kind, but gym has very little usable equipment. Worst gym in state college by far.
Friendly staff, clean and well-ventilated changing rooms with shower. I only go there for racquetball so I can’t tell how good other equipment is. This’s probably the only place to play racquetball in State College if you don’t have access to Penn State’s IM building. The racquetball court is okay, the hardwood floor could use some maintenance I think. Unlimited racquetball-only pass is $30/month as of August 2020.
Great experience, and such nice and friendly workers. 😊
The best fitness club! Love it here!
Don’t have any other gyms to compare it to, but I think this gym is great. Not sure what people are talking about when they say the machines are too old and hardly function, I’ve never had an issue with any piece of equipment and I’ve gone almost every day since July of last year.Only suggestions, I wish I knew how much extra the 24/7 access is cause it’d be nice to be able to lift when I get off work late night than have to wake up at 6 and lift before school and that they had turf or something for the sled.
The North Club is a wonderful well-equipped gym. Air conditioned, good changing rooms with showers and great equipment to let you work out any way you want to. clean environment with friendly staff. Reasonably Priced membership one of the best bang for your buck in state college
A great little gym. No frills, but everything you could want... cardio, circuit, free weights, spinning, racquetball, and the availability of group training. Also a 24 hour access option!
Equipment is old and half doesnt function. And now they are thinking about opening 24 hrs, there is no one there now during the day. Look for a more professional place to spend your money.
This is the best gym in State College. We recently upgraded and doubled the weight lifting equipment. Since we purchased the Club 2 years ago, our focus has been on: 1) cleaning; 2) well maintained equipment; 3) friendly and highly trained staff. We offer: group fitness, personal training, extensive cardio and weight lifting equipment, sauna, steam room, and tanning. Come on over for a great experience!
Was physically harassed when a crazy Trumper grabbed my shoulder to engage me in a weird political discussion. Staff did exactly nothing when I complained. I tried to let my membership lapse by not updating my credit card and they illegally changed the date without authorization. Be very wary. Most of the equipment is ancient and half doesnt work. Way better choices in State College.
All of the equipment is super outdated other than the womens-only room which specifically excludes men (and women who workout with men) from using any of the nicer equipment. Over half of the treadmills violently vibrate when you go faster than walking speed and many have broken TV screens as well. They claim to provide free WiFi, but its slower and less reliable than my cell data, and the only area in the gym without cell reception (the basement) doesnt get any WiFi signal so its pretty much useless. I cant comment on their classes as they cost extra. Ironically, the nicest and cleanest part of the gym is the locker rooms. I would give it 3-stars but management is absolutely terrible and brought my review down to 1-star.Staff are nice enough but received zero communication from management on how to handle the COVID situation or even answer basic questions. I was constantly asking for updates on the gym schedule and if we would be charged during the shutdown, but the staff had no information to give me since management doesnt tell them anything. They couldnt even tell me if I would be charged for the month that the gym was closed!!The front desk staff also verbally told my workout partner that they could cancel their membership a day late without any additional charge due to COVID circumstances; this was not honored by management and my workout partner was essentially told tough luck, not our problem and charged an entire months membership. I myself had to hound management by sending 2 separate emails asking to cancel my membership before I even got a response saying that they were out of town and would deal with my membership cancellation when they got back. I then had to send a 3rd email before I got confirmation that my membership had in fact been canceled. Luckily, I had seen how they previously treated my workout partner when trying to cancel their own membership so I had the foresight to start this process over a week before the cancellation deadline. I have no doubt I wouldve been charged another month if I hadnt been overly persistent which is completely unacceptable for a professional business. On top of all that, management opted to increase membership fees while decreasing hours of operation during COVID for some reason.Im convinced that all of the recent 5-star reviews were either left by people who have never been a member of another gym, paid for by management, or left by people associated with the gym. Heck one of the 5-star reviews from 7 months ago was left by The North Clubs own google account! You can find friendlier and more modern gyms with much better communicating management for a similar price elsewhere.
Great friendly staff, felt welcome as soon as I came in. The facilities are beyond phenomenal, with multiple levels equipped with various training equipment. Whether you simply want to do cardio to burn off fat or train heavy for powerlifting, this place would be great for you.
Great gym with a friendly staff and great equipment. Have stuff for the cardio folks to the powerl ifters.
Good gym, but the management is terrible. Very poor communication with customers. Cancelling membership is such a hassle and there is no option to cancel it yourself on their website.
Handled the covid situation quite poorly, and employees are not trained to know accurate information regarding cancellation policies.
I have been a member for almost 2 years now and it seems as if the service has gone down since I first joined. The weekend hours are especially short and the staff is especially inattentive. They are either on their phones are sitting down talking to each other. When asked a question, they act as if they cant be bothered to answer the question or that they have better things to do than help customers. A year ago the staff was friendly, offered help, and were trained trainers. Now they have a bunch of lazy entitled boys who stand at the counter to look pretty. The management needs to get a handle on what constitutes as a good customer relations employee. Would not recommend this gym to anyone except it is one of the only ones with a sauna. The membership cancellation is probably the most outrageous I have ever seen before as well. Always be wary of an organization that requires you to cancel two months prior to a cancellation date. They are likely having a hard time retaining customers and need to cheat them in order to stay afloat. Bottom line, avoid this gym. Based on customer service alone, hands down the WORST gym I have ever been a part of.
Been going there for three months - everything is fine. The equipment is good and modern (I like their much-underused pneumatic machines and the Espresso bikes). They have classes as well, and small steam rooms and saunas. The locker rooms arent too nice - with showers and toilets located so close together, people walk around in street shoes, and thats not too yummy.Opening times are convenient, the location is perfect for me, and prices are reasonable. Staff are nice, although Im on my own of course for my workout.
The North Club is a nice gym. Its far from downtown, so the clientele are a little older (that is, theyre not all college students). I really like the Women Only exercise room, as I can pretty much complete my routine in there and avoid any risk of unwanted attention. My experiences with the staff there have been uniformly positive as well.Plus, they usually have free coffee by the desk, so it makes it a nice part of your morning routine.
This has to be the best gym in town, they have everything. Sauna, steam room, womens only room, group fitness, more cardio equipment than I have ever seen at one location. There is a separate area for free weights that helps break the place up. The staff is extremely friendly. I love this place.
My friend recommended me this gym. she said its small but when i went there it was larger than i expected. They have enough equipment. However, I did not like their schedule. They close really early. During weekend they even close at 6pm or 8pm max. I am not the person who goes out and drinks. I prefer to work in gym rather than going out. So their schedule did not work for me very well. I study at campus and want to go to gym after i am done with studying. Overall not bad.
Cancelled my membership spring of 2017 because of cleanliness and antiquated equipment. My automatic monthly payments stopped. I confirmed through my bank that the debits had ceased. Well, for unknown reasons and without my authorization the debits resumed in September of 2017. Because debits had ceased for 5 months I no longer checked my account for the transactions. I called and was told the owner would be made aware. I was also told that it looks like my membership was placed on holdNot cancell, but they even admitted there were no monthly hold charges assessed to validate that claim. I thought it would be a simple fix, Refund my $560. Its now going on week two since I called and I have not heard a word. Three phone calls and one email have been initiated by me with no response. If this isnt resolved I guess my next step is the legal system.
If you have an emergency and have to go pee good ace to stop and run in clean rest rooms🙄😁😁😁
They have everything (machines, freeweights, etc) you need.Clerks are very kind and helpful. This place is not so crowded so you will be able to do the exercises you want to do anytime.
Been going since 2013, Gym costs more now with less space. Rooms are crowded, weights are messy. Go to another gym if you dont want to deal with crowded rooms or time constraints with a higher price point. Billing is done with new tech company that glitches frequently and several other people have had issues on charges as well. Their staff actually told me this as they tried to figure out my billing issue !!!! They need to clean it up otherwise the classes will be the only thing worth the money here. Get it together NorthClub, you use to have a much higher standards then the other gyms in town.
Decent gym with decent prices. I chose because its closest to my work place and I go on my lunch breaks. I do a little cardio so its perfect for what I need; however, the building/gym itself is not very clean. There is lots of dust/dirt build up on walls. I like the Womans Only Gym but the cardio equipment is in a very tight spot. Theres not a lot of room so it gets quite hot in the small space. I also dont like how the showers in the locker room have clear glass. Theres no sense of privacy which I prefer. Also, since the showers are so close to the lockers it often gets too steamy/sticky in the locker room. There isnt much venting.
Good spinning classes. Clean locker room. Exercise machines are OK
Be careful about the hidden fees.If you cancel your membership this mouth, for some stupid reasons, they will charge you for the next month as well. There is $40 annual fee that they are reluctant to talk about it much in the first day.Make sure that you will get the copy of the policy and a receipt for everything. However, never mind, they are smart enough to find a way to double or triple charge you at the end.It seemed an affordable gym in the first look, but by the hidden fees you will end up paying for, you would be better off to find yourself a gym with a better quality but a little higher membership fee. At least, in this way, you will really get what you paid for.
I am a former member of this gym, and only because I moved out of the area. The services are great: very competitive rates, a lot of various equipment to choose from. A lot of free classes also. A raquetball court, Steam and Sauna room are also included in the membership. Not to mention a friendly and courteous staff. I am amazed how they remembered who I was so quickly, considering how many people they probably see.I definitely suggest this gym to anybody who is looking to get in or stay in shape, as it really has everything you could need.
The sort of short guy at the front desk is terribly rude. He makes me feel uncomfortable every time I go so I plan on ending my membership soon. I am not sure what his problem is but everyone else there seems not as bad.
The North Club is a great local gym. The price is reasonable and the equipment is fair. There are plenty of cardio machines and enough weights to get a great workout in. Its few pitfalls include some dated free weight equipment and the showers are not in the best shape.
Would not recommend this gym. I cancelled 7 weeks ago (beginning of July) and they charged me the monthly fee for August, which was expected, but on top of that they charged an annual fee of $39.00. I was charged a total of $64.00 in one month, which was 7 weeks after I cancelled my membership. To me the monthly fee was acceptable, but to be charged the annual fee was more than unfair. They were not empathetic, courteous, fair, genuine, or concerned. They did not seem to care that they would lose a loyal customer, if I were to renew my membership after my school year. I had another gym membership in town at the YMCA. I cancelled 4 weeks ago due to the same reason (going back to college) They did not even charge me for the month of August due to the fact I cancelled in July. To me, that is fair and considerate. It completely caught me off guard how the North Club would not even consider a refund for the annual fee when I am no longer a member. Especially because I had cancelled 7 weeks ago.
Was reading the reviews and worried about unauthorized charges before I signed up since I know I could be moving, staff told me theres new management for the club so I thought things would change. WRONG. I asked thoroughly about cancellation policy when I signed up. Did exactly whats written on the policy: Sent email notice before 25th. Also talked to a staff on site but he said the managers away so he wrote a note down saying will leave it to them. After I found out I still got charged on the 1st, I wrote an email asking what happened. This manager lied and said that they have replied on the 25th about my cancellation and since my request was on the 25th so its too late to cancel for the next month. I never received the reply email so I asked for prove and the north club couldnt provide. I said the email was sent before 25th, they validated it but said they didnt process it until 25th so they have to charge me. Hello!?!? So you just admit that previous email was basically a lie when they were fully aware they received the notice before the deadline and decided to charge anyways!? After I confront the manager about the false claim, they completely stop replying.I was planning to cancel the yearly contract and just pay per month since Im looking for housing around. Have informed to the north club in my first reply that they could still have my business if they handled it correctly but still they choose to ignore the complaint. Now they will lose my business forever and I will not recommend anyone to join this club unless they dont care about paying for a service they never received and/or never wanted. This is not acceptable.Update: after couple days or about a week, the owner called, same person as the manager who replied my email, said nicely will send a check to refund and I did get a refund afterwards. So I’m up my stars.
This place is great for getting huge, and even getting swoll. Theres a diverse array of equipment ranging from elipticals and cardio to free weights. They also have a sauna and a steam room where the old guys like to hang out to avoid their wives.
I was able to pay a drop in fee here and the facilities had everything I need with lots of space. Staff was nice too.
Overall I like it. Spacious always can find a bench or treadmill. The only complaint is they have the humidity jacked through the roof.
This place is filthy, they are supposed to be a health club and the bathroom is horrible, hair and dirt every where! Cancelled my membership - auto billing to my credit card stopped then started up again without my authorization!! Called 3 times, each time told the owner woukd call me back and fix the mistake- never happened- now disputing with my credit card company- Horrible management- no retutned phone call - dO not trust this business!
I have been going to the North Club for 20 years. The staff are the best. And the facilities are terrific.
Convenient location and good classroom space, but a lot of the equipment has some wear on it and the hours arent the best.
Great variety of universal equipment and stationary bokes and treadmills. Very personable staff.
I terminated my membership the second week of October because I was in the process of switching gyms, they made me pay Novembers bill which was expected even though it was not mentioned until I spoke with someone else. I sent my termination email to the email I was given and after about a week I did not hear anything from anyone, I called the gym and was told that they had received my email but that they didnt have time to respond and that they would eventually. Ok? Long story short I was having ATM troubles so I gave them a call and explained my situation letting them know that I could bring in the payment as cash, the first person I spoke with told me that they did not accept cash payments but that he would leave a note for the manager, he also informed me that he would put in the note not to charge me the $39 processing fee? Which I was glad. I thanked the guy and hung up, a couple days went by and I didnt hear anything I called in and the girl I spoke with had trouble comprehending what I was saying, she put me on hold but the phone was still on so I could hear everything. She says the her manager theres a lady on the phone saying something about a card I dont know I dont know what shes saying after I repeated myself 6 times, speaking in clear fluent english. The manager gets on the phone and I explained what happened, he says first we dont charge a $39 processing fee it would be $15, and second we do accept cash payments. If I wouldve known when I called in the first time about the cash payment this whole process couldve been avoided. I go in and give my cash payment and they gave me a receipt meaning my payment for November was done. I checked my account today and noticed they took out $25.00 meaning I was charged twice. I do not recommend this place to anyone, no one is friendly, no one knows what theyre doing half the time, and its poor communication.
Almost as good as Fit for Play!
Great gym, several rooms, included a womens only room.
Nice friendly and clean. Good equipment.
Weight training area is woefully undersized and poorly organized. They recently cut even more space from the weight area to squeeze more cardio equipment in.
Saw good reviews on here and it was the closest to my house, so I toured it and joined. This place is good for those that like cardo machines. They dominate the floor space. The free weights and cable machines are scattered around them with little logic. The machines are super old. The workout rooms upstairs were set to a crossfit type room when I toured. When i came in to work out it was gone. Lots of classes, but $25/month more. There is a womens only room with nice new equipment, but Im not a woman. I may be spoiled with prior gyms (military and Wyomissing fitness), but this isnt for a guy looking for an easy to use workout center. I cancelled after 1 visit....was afrer 3 day window so now i must pay for 2 months to clise my account.
If you are looking for a conveniently located building to use a piece of equipment and nothing else, the North Club will likely suit you just fine. There is quite a bit of cardio equipment and the things in the women-only room are great (I never spent much time anywhere else). I really liked the Expresso bikes. However, if you have any expectations for customer service from the management or administration, you should definitely look elsewhere. They have no concept of the term nor apparent care to learn. And I learned the hard way that if you complain about that lack of customer service, they will ignore you and cancel your membership. There are definitely friendly people on the staff, but the management and administration either fire them or drive them away with the mismanagement that prevails (as of the time of this writing). In 15 months, I saw an almost 100% turnaround in the staff, which is very odd considering I most often visited the gym in the midmorning on weekdays, when one would expect to see little turnover because people available to work those hours arent college students with part time gigs, theyre people in fitness for a career. Yet, every few months, it was a new set of faces at the desk. But, high employee turnaround is a symptom of poor management, which is my main complaint. If you need a gym that provides any extra services, this gym is also not for you. The management does not care whether or not there are lapses in service (in my case, the child care service) and if you complain to the daytime manager at the front desk (again, as of the time of this writing) he will tell you its not a problem from his point of view or explain why it isnt his fault--but he will do very little to take accountability, address your concern and actually solve the problem. Its shockingly poor leadership. That is only one example of the poor leadership and management I either personally experienced or received first hand accounts from other members or employees I befriended a long the way (which is wont to happen when you go to a gym 3-4 times a week almost every week for over year). For weeks, I called and left messages for the club director (an administrator over the management, the third to hold that position in less than a year, yet another symptom of poor administration) to complain about this manager. Finally, I wrote an email to him and a few days later I received an unsigned email terminating my membership. When I got him on the phone the next day (go figure, I would want an explanation for that extreme reaction to an email message) in an exasperated voice, he told me that, Child care is not our niche! Granted, while I had brought some concerns about child care to the manager (isnt that weird, I want reliable child care that I pay for as part of my membership and for the workers who care for my children to have all the equipment they need and be appropriately treated by the management?), my email was to complain about the manager and his complete lack of customer service. And you know what? Not only is excellent customer service the factor that not only would have resolved ALL of my concerns about services and management, it would have prevented them across the board, and it absolutely is THE niche of every good business. But then again, the whole purpose my one-star rating for the North Club is to publish my experience that it is NOT a good business.Update: after my membership was cancelled, I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. They neither contacted me nor the bureau to resolve the matter. I think that speaks pretty strongly of the type of place this is--the people who run it really dont care.
Silver Snikers members can get in free but $25 per month for classes. Great social environment and welcoming people.
Love working out there
The silver sneakers program here is great!
They are terrible with billing and charges and they make it really difficult to cancel membership. Find somewhere else.
Locker room and Facilities could use some cleaning, but other than that the gym has everything and more
Love this place.
Have something for everyone
