I used Aamco because my transmission was slipping and after an inspection, it was recommended to have it rebuild. A few other things where found defective like wheel bushings and such and I ended up spending over 12k for the work at that time. I discovered a jolt in times when the automatic transmission was shifting from the second to the third gear. I went back and mentioned my observation and was told to give it some time, to come back after I’ve driven 1k for a transmission oil change and it would need some driving time to adjust itself. I’ve done all that and the result is still the same, if not more pronounced. I understand that it is a lot of work to actually open up the transmission again and physically check out the issue, but I have been mentioning this problem on several occasions in person and on the phone with members of the repair team and I’ve been basically told it’s no big deal. I spend an considerable amount of money to have a perfectly functioning transmission (complete rebuild to new like conditions) and month later, that’s not what I have.I brought my car in because I’ve noticed a fluid leak. It was diagnosed with a leak of either one of two sensors in the cooling system. A week later the repair is done, both sensors have been replaced ($750). Driving off, I’ve noticed the “check engine” light is on. Turns out a wrong sensor was ordered that doesn’t get accepted by the board computer. Now I’m well into week two waiting to get my car back 😳. Everybody has been very nice, but I’m questioning competence. This is not some backyard repair shop. I’ve been expecting proper work for my hard earned money, but as of now, my issues have not been properly addressed.
I brought my van into this AAMCO in Dec 2019 with a failing rear-differential. Shannon (co-owner) and company made us feel at home during the three day repair. The shop could not find the original parts (although I was able to find them online just fine) so sold us on a posi-traction rear end rebuild which costed $1000 more than the original bill... now a total of nearly $3400.Three days later (we stayed in a hotel as we were traveling through the area) we were fixed up and ready to get back on the road. We made it to the Mojave National Preserve where the rear end failed again (seven days after the repair) this time 80 miles from the nearest AAMCO. We had to rent a U-Haul truck and trailer to get my van into Las Vegas where the only AAMCO willing to take warranty work got us in.Yes, it turns out that the warranty is completely up to each shop if they want to honor it or not.First thing the new shop said to me was, you didnt pay that much to San Rafael AAMCO did you? They knew we got ripped off. Add to it that the repair lasted only seven days. Granted, Shannon at San Rafael did honor the warranty so the re-repair work began.Yes, the original shop can decide NOT to honor the warranty of they wish...It was about here that we found that San Rafael AAMCO who charged us the $1400 deposit at the start of the work, charged us the full amount at the end of the work. Effectively, we paid an additional $1400 on top of the over-priced repair that didnt last a week. It took three phone calls over a week to get that amount refunded. Each time I called they promised to look into it and call me back, but failed to call me back each time.The re-repair work took another 3.5 weeks (!!!) due to the Las Vegas shop being stuck (thanks to said warranty) into replacing the posi-traction parts with the same parts, which broke again only 20 miles after they repaired us the second time. They tried again, and the van didnt even leave the shop. Finally, after nearly a month and a half... and THREE failed repairs, we had a junk-yard rear-end installed under our van for $600.I called and talked to Shannon trying to be fair to him, but was met with excuses and eventually he just stopped calling me back. AAMCO San Rafael refused to refund even a partial amount so I was forced to file a claim with my credit card to get my refund. Which I got all $3400 back,In the end AAMCO San Rafaels poor workmanship caused a month delay to my road-trip-vacation, refused to offer even a partial refund, and now I have a junk yard rear-end, and the warranty I paid for is void as well. Even though I got the original amount back, I still lost another $4000+ on towing and hotel costs thanks to Shannon and his employees at San Rafael AAMCO. No way I would wish this shop onto my worst of enemiesShannon, you wanted me to post a review (asking me repeatedly to review your shop on Google) so here it is. I hope that you will learn from your loss here. You should have just worked with me on a fair refund amount. Your arrogance cost you thousands more and I will be sure to post this exact review on Yelp and other review sites too, which will cost you many thousands more.
Aamco in San Rafael is awesome. These guys are professional and get the job done. They installed a refurbished transmission and new brake system. The work was done perfect. Need a transmission??? Come here. Great service but just good guys. Good quality work. Thanks Shannon for everything.
I highly recommend getting your car serviced here. Shannon set me up with an oil change last minute, so thankful for this, I’ve been on a tight schedule this week. Not only did they do an oil change, but also ran a free diagnostic to make sure my car was running efficiently. Prices are honest, and their work is trustworthy. You might call me a difficult customer. Because of my schedule, all of my service arrangements were made over the telephone, my truck dropped off and picked up after hours. I have never met any of the employees face to face in person, but my needs were handled professionally and my circumstances handled seamlessly as if they had been servicing my truck for years.

I have yet to bring my car in for repairs, but wanted to comment on the positive and helpful experience that I have had thus far with both Don and Shannon who, you know care about their customers. I did stop by with my car several weeks ago, but due to the distance of where I live I needed to find a mechanic closer to my home in San Anselmo. It was during the beginning of the pandemic and getting a ride home while my car was being repaired became an important issue. I spoke to Don today, after several weeks and he still remembered me and treated me with kindness and answered my questions and was patient. We discussed my concerns and I will definately be taking my car back to this shop as we both agreed that I should not operate my car if the check engine light comes on as the other shop had stated that is was okay to drive if the check engine light came on again...the other shop stated that after replacing the spark plugs and stating that my car it is not worth repairing due to possible valve job repair it is not worth the effort due to the compression problem..and the cost of engine repair. The spark plugs were replaced last year so it may not be a compression issue as the plugs should not wear that quickly..just my opinion, but I do know my car and it has been good to me....Don listened to me and agreed that it may be something else to cause the issue....the light comes back will have AAMCO look at and let me know how to move forward...
I have been coming here for just under three years now, and I have never once had anything but a great experience.Car issues used to be terrifying to me because they usually meant stress and a big bill to pay. Ive been burned by a bad mechanic... I bet we all have. But not here. I feel so reassured and know my car will be well taken care of here. I know I will never get anything but great work here.Whether I am coming in for a basic oil change, or major work, Shannon has never once tried to up-sell me on any single thing. He always takes time out of his day to explain to me what his team is doing, and works with me on my budget to make sure that Im always driving a safe and reliable vehicle.I also have never once had a charge on my bill for something I didnt approve- Shannon will ALWAYS call and ask me for permission before he does a single thing on my car that we have havent agreed on, and hes exceedingly detailed and never misses a beat. If I cant afford everything my car needs, he will creatively work with me to make sure I work on only the most necessary fixes so that my car stays in good condition. He never pressures me to buy anything and treats all his customers like family.You can tell that the owners of this shop care much more about having a really good relationship with their customers and they do about trying to squeeze pennies out of people.Shannon and I have been through two cars together now (one was hit by a drunk driver but he helped me kept it in great condition till then, haha) and I recommend him to anyone who wants a good relationship with an honest mechanic.
I have been coming here with my car for about 3 years. Shannon and Don are both very professional and have always explained any necessary repairs to my vehicle in a way where I felt comfortable doing business here. I came to Aamco after leaving a very rude mechanic who would act as if my business was second rate because I own a older model vehicle that “is not worth repairing”. The reason I keep coming back to see Don and Shannon is because I am so grateful I have found a place to take my car were they are not afraid to fix whatever it is that needs to be fixed to get me back on the road!
Really friendly local service station. The manager Shannon was very helpful answering any questions and provided all the information I needed prior to servicing the vehicle. Once everything was finished he called me quickly, not leaving me waiting around while my vehicle was ready, and told me everything they found that I would want to know. He runs a great service station there, and I will absolutely continue to give them my business.
My o/d light started blinking on a road trip through California so I stopped here to have it checked out. They were able to diagnose the problem and have it fixed the next day so I was able to get back on the road. They even locked up my mountain bike in their shop so it was safe while they worked on the car which I really appreciated. Friendly guys who seemed to do everything they could to help.
Shannon and his team were super helpful and friendly! My 2016 Ford Fiesta transmission was acting up (issues with rpms going super high for no apparent reason). He told me all of the procedures he would do on my car, including sanitizing before and after. It was ready the next day and I haven’t had any issues since. Thank you all for the work that you do - especially in times like these!
Shannon was very helpful in scheduling the repair of my classic truck to a time when there was guaranteed space inside to garage it overnight. Shannon used his network to source used replacement parts and serviced and repainted them to make my classic truck look even better. The generous warranty is reassuring but the quality of workmanship was so good I never expect to have a problem.
I had my interlock device installed here and have been coming back for my recalibrations. They are always great with the customer service and do quick work. They are always very proffesional. Would definately recommend.

What can I say. This is probably the best shop Ive ever dealt with. Whether its a Transmission on my Buick, gaskets on my F-250, or whatever it takes to keep my old BMW 535i running good, these guys know exactly what theyre doing. Steve is the guy that runs the shop, and every time Ive dealt with him I feel like Im getting a straight-up, square deal at a super fair and reasonable price. These guys go the extra mile and I wont take my vehicles anywhere else. Period.

I have Mercedes Benz E320 and it was leaking from transmission. The diagnosed was free and they explained me clearly that I understood what was need it to be done. Stuff is pretty honest and knowlegeble. Also, they gave a ride to get to work and I had student discount. Definitely, I am going back to this shop because I really want them to take care of my car.

Mechanic visually found leaky hose, pulled part out then they didnt even have proper tools, mech left for 40 min to get tool, put it this way i was charged 496 dollars waited in very small office that had parts laying around spider webs everywhere, went i paid cash, manager pulled crumbled up money from his pocket. I would never.send anyone there for car repairs the place was falling apart, just like their tow truck i am very unsatisfied..they need to have better tools and clean up the place, then maybe my experience would have been a little better, i wouldnt be surprised to find out the good reviews were written by friends to get customers. __My apologies this review was ment for the Aamco in Richmond San Pablo ave.
I took my Chevy S10 truck in (via tow-truck) because the transmission was messing up big time. I discovered how terribly complicated transmission work truly is. The mechanics are very professional and dedicated. My vehicle is now a pleasure to drive. Additionally - The folks at the front of the house are definitely above average and compassionate. Dont worry, youll be in good hands if you go there.
I got my radiator and coolant system worked on. They were very professional, always called me before they did any work or ordered any parts. I was given options and accurate estimates. I first heard about this company through a radio spot (engine light on). My next step was to look them up. I did it all and then made an appointment. The things that needed to be done were explained --- after the diagnostic. My reason for going in was my engine light was on and off and this last time stayed on. I need to get my car smogged and this was holding up the process. Needless to say after a phone call and questions, I dropped my car off, I was given a ride to transportation to get to work. When My car was done, I was given a ride back to their office. When you make your appointment, ask all the questions you need to in order to put your mind at ease. If you need to rent a car while yours is being serviced, they can arrange the connection for you as well. Knowledge, hospitable and service minded!!!!
Shannon was great!! My 1995 Mecedes was repaired by him and it is in prefect condition now! He was kind and patient, I had no idea about mechanic but he explained everything until I understood:) Reasonable price too!
I was helped here by a gentleman named Phillip (or Phil), a super friendly and honest man that responds and returns calls immediately. These guys are knowledgeable. If you are in need of a new transmission, dont go anywhere else.

They had my truck for over a month altogether, never figured out what was wrong. It broke down 10 minutes after I picked it up from their shop and they towed it back for me and later made me pay for that tow! STILL no clue why my truck keeps breaking down. These guys are supposed to be the experts.
I was having trouble with my vehicle it had been leaking took it to Genes auto in Vallejo they couldn’t find leak. Took it to sears in Fairfield they couldn’t find leak, took it to Concord sears auto they said nothing leaking, but I could see it in my driveway .anyway truck stopped on 580 going towards San Rafael. Had truck towed to AAMCO they assessed truck said I needed new transmission, they had several options available to save me money and get me back on the road . I choose a good opinion to suite my financial needs . I couldn’t believe it my truck was back to me running very well I two days not two weeks. I brought my Mercedes CLK 55AMG in to AAMCO because I was having issue with my battery. Shannon met me at the front desk and I left my car with them for a few hours. They looked through all the possible problems I might be having with my car and diagnosed minor issues I was having and when they didnt find anything major they told me what to do and didnt charge me a dime! They just told me to come back the next time I need something done and they would take care of me. My experience here was great! If you go there ask for Shannon hes a great guy!
